What is Trupanion?

Trupanion offers both dog insurance and cat insurance. With Trupanion, all customers receive one simple plan that makes clear what’s covered and what’s not.

Trupanion plans cover all unexpected injuries and illnesses, reimbursing customers for 90% of their vet bills without payout limits once they’ve met their deductibles. Trupanion’s customer service team also lessens billing hassles by paying veterinarians directly.

Once you’ve enrolled, Trupanion’s waiting period for injury coverage is five days, which is shorter than the industry standard of 14 days. However, the waiting period before it covers treating any illnesses is 30 days.

Trupanion plans

Trupanion pet health insurance offers just one type of plan, although it’s applicable to both cats and dogs. Trupanion’s pet insurance plan is more expensive than many of its competitors', but the plan is comprehensive, and rates don’t automatically increase as your pet ages. With Trupanion’s lifetime, per-condition deductible, customers save more in the long run for chronic conditions, too.

What does Trupanion cover?

Trupanion pet insurance covers 90% of the cost to treat any new illness or condition that your pet experiences during the policy’s term. Its policies do not cover preexisting conditions, including any illness, injury or condition that your pet had before enrollment.

You have to wait at least five days to get coverage for injury treatment and 30 days for illness care. This is why it’s a good idea to enroll your pet while it’s young and healthy, before anything potentially serious and costly happens.

The company covers 90% of the cost of hereditary diseases, unidentified issues and congenital illnesses that are not preexisting conditions. This includes health problems that many other providers don’t cover, including:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Dental illness
  • Orthopedic issues

Trupanion FAQ

What is not covered?

Exam fees, taxes, wellness and preventive care and preexisting conditions are not covered. For an additional cost, you can purchase the Recovery and Complementary Care rider to cover alternative therapies and treatments.

Does Trupanion cover vaccinations?

No, Trupanion’s pet health insurance plan does not cover vaccinations. It only covers unexpected expenses, which don’t include wellness care, like vaccinations or preventive medications.

How long does it take to complete a claim with Trupanion pet insurance?

If your vet uses Trupanion’s software, Trupanion can directly pay the vet in minutes. You can ask if your veterinary clinic or hospital uses it. For reimbursement, the claims team processes the majority of claims within 24 hours, keeping you informed throughout the process. Many reviewers who pay at the time of visit mention getting reimbursed within two weeks.

Does Trupanion cover bloodwork?

It depends. If the bloodwork is routine, Trupanion pet insurance does not cover it. However, if it’s required as part of treatment for a covered illness or injury, it is covered.

Does Trupanion cover neutering?

Like most pet insurance companies, Trupanion does not cover the cost of neutering.

How much does Trupanion cost?

Trupanion dog insurance costs between $36 and $100 per month for most breeds, and Trupanion cat insurance costs between $23 and $57 per month. With Trupanion, pet owners can customize their coverage with a deductible up to $1,000 and add coverage enhancements, such as recovery care and pet owner assistance. Coverage enhancements add a few dollars to your premium every month.

Trupanion pet insurance plans include lifetime, per-condition deductibles instead of annual deductibles, meaning customers don’t have to keep paying year after year for a chronic condition. Once you’ve met the deductible for your pet’s condition, you’ll never have to pay the deductible again to treat it.

Trupanion does not offer a discount for multiple pets, but it does have a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.

Is Trupanion worth it?

Trupanion is a pet insurance company offering a wide variety of coverage and convenience benefits. It has decades of experience, covers over 500,000 pets and has paid out over $1 billion in claims paid.  We recommend getting a quote and comparing coverage and cost with offers from other pet insurers.

    Claims Handling

    Reviewed Oct. 29, 2025

If I could give zero stars I certainly would! Paying for 2 years since I got my dog- premiums did go up. Had 3 incidences of claims with zero coverage for any emergency services. Called about coverage and what is covered as it was sold to me as 90% coverage although my online account had zero info or explanation of coverage. They told me every incident/illness/disease has a separate deductible and no exam fees are ever covered no medications will be covered unless it’s a chronic illness. So I inquired of the policy detailing what IS ACTUALLY covered and kept getting the answer nothing is covered nor it ever will be as every time your pet has an illness it’s a new incident and a new deductible has to be paid which does not align with the term “deductible.” They are using this term to elude paying the 90%.

My total costs have been about $1800 in emergency costs plus my premiums of $1600 over 2 years. I have requested reimbursement and contacted the ombudsmen but have not received any more resolution to the problem. I cancelled my policy as this is false advertising and very scam like company that lures you in with marketing 90% coverage providing NO documents on coverage (which I’m pretty sure is illegal) and denying every claim and sliding am inquiry.

If I could give zero stars, I would. This company is an absolute scam. They’ll happily take your monthly premiums but will find every excuse imaginable not to pay your claim when you actually need help. They twist policy language, delay responses, and keep asking for more “documentation” just to drag things out. After weeks of back and forth, they still refused to reimburse a single dollar. Do yourself a favor — don’t waste your time or money. They make it look easy to file claims, but once you do, they’ll make sure it goes nowhere. There are far better pet insurance options out there that actually care about your pet and honor their word. Avoid this company at all costs.

They buried the bit about not covering exams in one of those terms of service changes. So... surprise! And though they have absolute capability to reach my bank for purposes of getting our monthly premium, they couldn't, for some reason, connect when it came to pay out a measly couple hundred bucks on a 1500 emergency bill. So they're slow walking the payment via the US mail but we're ten days out and even that hasn't shown up. All this after 8 years of paying in. THEN, just after I had to argue with them about the claim payment, we get a notice that premiums are going up 11+% with a bunch of weasel words that explain how lt's "their job to figure out what costs are so they can keep premiums fair.. blah blah." But then again, even their stockholders aren't doing so well right now so go figure. Looks like death throes to me. We're outta there.

Absolute worst customer service and company ever. I have never left a review before but I can't with this company and want to warn everyone to never use them!!! Shop anywhere else or just put the $150 they're making you pay into a savings account for your dog/cat. You'll probably end up never using it and then just have a treat for yourself. Started paying for pet insurance for my dog as a puppy which started at $50. Today, they have upped it to $150 and I have never even used them.

I have given them over $8,500 in the years I have had them and they just up your monthly payment whenever they want and if you want to pay a lower one, they only offer one choice which is, they will make you pay a higher deductible to lower your monthly so it's not really helping at all. Please please please go anywhere else to get pet insurance or again, just put it into a savings so companies like this can't screw you over.

Keeping it simple, this company does whatever it can to get out of paying anything. They "linked" pet condition that various vets said had nothing to do with each other. We would have saved more money by just taking the monthly premiums and putting them in a bank account. This company is less than useless. What they do should be illegal.

Paid for 10 years with no claims. Now my baby needs dental work and a small lump removed. Stuck with 85% of the bill. This is a horrible experience when you never missed a payment and watched the monthly bill go up 90 %. Stay far away.

They are a total scam. If you love your dog, run away from them. I'm still waiting for a claim and a refund, one month later. I had them because of Chewy, but when I sent my dogs' claims for the first time, they would disappear from the website, I emailed them, and they said they had nothing. I took print screens, and they said they would do it by email. After that, they said my first dog had an ear infection because he made a test to see if he had something, and because he had had it in the past, they would not cover it. But he didn't have any, they just didn't want to cover the diagnostic test. And this guy Ali would insist that my dog had an infection, this representative is the most lying, rude person, I do think the guy has even issues against clients or me.

I canceled the service with them, and after I canceled they charged me. I sent an email, and the guy said they didn't refund me yet because now there is an error in the system, and they put my cancellation date wrong. Hilarious. Now I'm still waiting for my refund and my claim... Worst customer support, worst experience ever.

I have been shocked to discover all the fines and claims that Trupanion has on their record. At least ten U.S. states have cited Trupanion and its subsidiary, #AmericanPetInsuranceCompany (APIC), for violations of local insurance and fraud laws. It all started when I requested information on why they are constantly increasing the monthly payment. Here’s the link with all the court documents: **.

IT'S A complete ripoff, we need to do a class action Lawsuit! I hate Trupanion. They are just getting free money, and they never payout anything. 5 years and every claim, I have made, they will say approved, but with they word it, to where, they are never paying anything. It's very frustrating. Save yourself the stress, it's not worth it. I'm a real person, and it's sickening how they have scammed me. I hate to cancel because I have paid so much in. I just wish I could get my money back, and just save, for emergencies. Please don't fall for it. You will regret it.

I have used Trupanion since 2009 for several animals (dog and cats). Initially they were great, but somewhere between 2009 and 2017 they changed their deductible rules. They used to have an annual deductible but then switched to a "per illness/episode" deductible. Due to this deductible change, this policy is useless for cats and anything less than an expensive (over $1000) emergency vet visit. The other day (8/12/2025) my cat had a dental procedure and since the vet wrote periodontal disease and tooth fracture they counted those as separate incidents and applied their "per-illness/episode" deductible policy. I understand that is their policy but it is terrible and there are other insurance providers out there that still have an annual deductible not a "per illness/episode" deductible. I canceled my policy immediately and switched to a different provider that offered the same coverage with only an annual deductible, AND it was cheaper.
