What is Lemonade pet insurance?

Lemonade pet insurance is like health insurance for your dog or cat. Its standard plan helps cover the costs of diagnostics, procedures and medications when your cat or dog has an accident or illness and has to go to the vet.

The company offers three preventative packages: the Preventative Package includes live medical chat and covers an annual wellness exam, annual parasite test, annual heartworm screening, annual blood test and up to three vaccines. The Preventative+ Package adds coverage for medication for fleas, ticks and heartworm prevention and routine dental cleaning. And the Puppy/Kitten Preventative Package helps cover spaying/neutering, microchipping and other expenses that come up during your pet's first year of life.

In addition, Lemonade offers 5 optional add-ons: Vet visit fees, physical therapy, behavioral conditions, dental illness and end of life and remembrance.

Lemonade is a public benefit corporation that takes a flat fee from customer premiums and donates leftover funds to organizations chosen by its policyholders, including animal welfare organizations. In 2024, Lemonade’s “Giveback” donated over $2.1 million to 43 nonprofits.

How does Lemonade pet insurance work?

Lemonade pet insurance has an annual deductible, an annual limit and coinsurance. When signing up for Lemonade’s basic pet insurance, you can adjust these amounts so that a policy fits your budget. Annual limits range from $5,000 to $100,000, and coinsurance, or the amount Lemonade pays after you meet your annual deductible, is either 70%, 80% or 90%.

During sign-up, you’ll also choose whether you want to add optional coverage for preventive care, vet visit fees or physical therapy. If you have a puppy or kitten under 2 years old, you can add on the Puppy/Kitten Preventative Package, which covers two wellness exams, six vaccines, two fecal or internal parasite tests, spaying or neutering, microchipping, and heartworm or flea and tick medication.

Once you sign up for a pet insurance policy, you pay a monthly premium to keep your pet insured. Keep in mind there are a few waiting periods before you can use your coverage:

  • 14 days for illnesses
  • 30 days for orthopedic conditions
  • Accidents and preventative care are not subject to any waiting period

Note that waiting periods apply to all states where Lemonade Pet Insurance is active.

When you file a claim for a covered event, Lemonade pays the coinsurance level you initially chose for your policy, minus any amount of your annual deductible you haven’t met. Let’s say your first vet bill of the year is $1,000, and your plan has a coinsurance of 80% and an annual deductible of $250. You pay $250, and Lemonade covers 80% of the remaining $750.

Because you’ve met your annual deductible with this claim, you won’t have to pay it again for the rest of the year. You continue paying for 20% of claims until Lemonade pays up to the annual maximum, at which point you are 100% financially responsible for your pet’s care.

You can file a claim using the Lemonade app. You’ll upload the vet or clinic invoice and receipt before submitting the claim. Lemonade’s goal is to process claims instantly. In some cases, you may be able to get a claim paid before leaving the vet’s office; other claims may take more time to review.

Lemonade pet insurance cost

Lemonade offers pet insurance starting at $10 per month. The price you pay ultimately depends on your pet’s age and breed, the plan you choose, your location and other factors. Dogs are generally more expensive to insure than cats.

Adjusting your annual deductible, coinsurance and annual limit can lower your premium. Keep in mind, though, that you'll pay more out of pocket for vet bills if you opt for less coverage. Lemonade’s annual deductible options are $100, $250, $500 and $750, its coinsurance options are 70%, 80% and 90%, and its annual limits are between $5,000 and $100,000.

Is Lemonade pet insurance good?

Lemonade pet insurance doesn’t cover accidents or illnesses that occur during the waiting periods, preexisting conditions or spaying and neutering for pets over 2, but this is standard for pet insurance companies. The company makes it easy to sign up for coverage and get fast reimbursement after claims. It’s a smart choice for cat or dog parents looking to shield themselves from unexpected and costly vet bills. As with any insurance policy, be sure to read the fine print carefully so you know exactly what’s covered.

Hello everyone, I’ve been dealing with this company for almost a month now. Worst decision I’ve made in a long time. I have two dogs Gizmo and Cosmo. Both of them are on my plan. This has been so difficult to get my claim approved. They’ve been asking the same question over and over again. “Can you please provide me with the medical records” My veterinarian has cc every email that was sent over and they still can’t figure out that these documents have been sent over. My previous or reoccurring issues that have happened with my dog so there’s no reason why I shouldn’t have received a refund already. Lizzie a manager that is taking care of my case supposedly will not return my phone calls and the emails that they sent out you cannot respond to. I’ve asked for supervisor several times no one calls back. No one does their job properly. I am so angry and frustrated. Please do not use this company. Please cancel ASAP and go with healthy paws.

WARNING TO PET OWNERS: Think carefully before choosing Lemonade Pet Insurance. I insured my senior cat in early 2026. Within weeks of the policy taking effect, my cat became seriously ill — not eating, losing weight. I sought care at my regular vet and then a specialist for an ultrasound and full evaluation. Total bills exceeded $2,500. Lemonade denied every single claim. Here is what happened:

Denial #1: They claimed pre-existing PANCREATITIS. The specialist ultrasound showed a completely normal pancreas.
Denial #2: When I proved the pancreas was normal, they shifted to pre-existing IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). The specialist’s own written letter states my cat has NO definitive diagnosis of IBD. No biopsy was ever done. No endoscopy was ever done.

Denial #3: They then claimed “chronic enteropathy” — a third different reason across three separate denial letters.

Lemonade’s own appeal letter admitted “there was no formal diagnosis at the time” — yet they continued to deny every claim. Prior vet visits involved medication trials to see what helped a sick senior cat. That is standard veterinary practice. It is NOT a confirmed diagnosis. Lemonade treated unconfirmed differentials as established facts to justify denial. I filed a complaint with my state insurance department. Lemonade stood by their denial.

I paid my premiums in good faith. I followed every appeal step. Lemonade paid nothing — not one dollar — while changing their denial reason three times. If you are considering Lemonade Pet Insurance, know this: any past vet visit, any medication trial, any symptom mentioned in your pet’s records can and will be used to deny your claim — even without a confirmed diagnosis. #LemonadeInsurance #PetInsurance #InsuranceDenial #PetHealth #ConsumerWarning

I purchased their insurance February 3, 2026 for a kitten that I had gotten three weeks prior. On January 26, 2026, I took my kitten to the vet because I suspected he had an upper respiratory infection that required antibiotics. At a follow up appointment a week later, his symptoms had not completely cleared up and my vet added another antibiotic to the mix. At that time, she mentioned that nasal polyps are a POSSIBILITY in cats but she DID NOT diagnose the presence of any nasal polyps.

On April 1st, I took my kitten to the emergency vet because he suddenly had thick nasal discharge and was breathing heavily. The next day they went in with a scope into his nasal passages and discovered a mass and were able to successfully remove about a third of it due to his small size and not having equipment small enough to accommodate him.

I submitted my claim to Lemonade on April 8, 2026. After nearly three weeks of waiting for an update on my claim, I contacted them. They responded within a few hours and told me the claim was denied because he had been seen for a diagnosed upper respiratory infection in January and therefore the care he received in April was considered pre-existing since he had the same symptoms two months later that turned out to be a mass at the base of his sinuses that was interfering with his airway. I'm totally dis-satisfied with my entire experience with them. Because he had a URI before he was ever covered, which isn't uncommon in kittens, they totally screwed me over. I cancelled his policy now that I know how they twist the pre-existing conditions terms.

It appears that Lemonade insurance is a scam. Was reading a bunch of reviews and forums and it looks like people have the same issue we have had. They just deny claims and never pay. I've put through multiple claims all of which have been denied. The most recent was a CCL tear which the reason we got insurance was to cover big issues if they happen. This was a big issue and all they say is it was a pre-existing condition so it's denied. Apparently there is a weird by-law that nobody would ever figure out that would allow them to deny it. I saw some other comments where people had the same issue of them just saying it's pre-existing condition so they can just deny the claim.

I would not recommend using Lemonade for pet insurance (or any other insurance they offer) because it's definitely a scam. I've already convinced a bunch of friends and their friends to switch away, company is not worth it. We now will have to file with insurance commissioner to get some sort of retribution for everything that was paid. What's the point of paying Lemonade insurance money if all they do is deny claims. Seems odd and there's a word for that which starts with an S and ends with cam. If you are thinking of using them watch out and go somewhere else.

Have used Lemonade for our pup for a while etc. 5 days ago submitted a claim, If a payment approved would ONLY be applied to my deductible, Either way, I submitted all docs required through their app. Get an email asking for same docs again and then said calling my vet. It was a simple claim, no questions of past history etc. Basically implying were not going to approve, This was a $241 which I knew would apply to my deductible, I am very unhappy with the delay, asking for more docs I already submitted, Even left a voicemail in their app explaing why the vist they suggested I do when filing the claim. 5 days ago, I have no time to mess with all this. They were looking for any way not to approved, I cancelled claim, cancelled BOTH my policies with them, I will find a better pet ins, Policy.

I was very unhappy with my experience with Lemonade pet insurance. I purchased it for my new puppy and the first time I attempted to use it for an illness where my dog threw twice one night and I took him into the vet the next morning, Lemonade denied my claim stating it was, "a pre-existing condition" simply because he had had worms when he was a newborn, (as many puppies do), which had been treated and cleared at the time. He had no worms (verified) when he came to me and when he vomited. The vet tested him and he was clear for worms, none. In the end it was undetermined as to why he vomited but possibly due to new heartworm medication on an empty stomach. It took Lemonade about a month to decide that they would not pay because it was "a pre-existing condition" which it clearly was not. I switched to Spot Pet Insurance who my daughter has had great experiences with.

Lemonade pet insurance is extremely expensive when you consider you are dealing with an AI agent 90% of the time. My dog was recently diagnosed with Cushings disease after several years of testing for Cushings disease and having normal test results however Lemonade is still considering the Cushings a “pre-existing condition” in spite of him having years worth of blood tests showing normal results while covered by their policy. Their reasoning? His ALP liver levels have been rising over the last 5-6 years (which happens often in older dogs with no disease or illness, according to my vet). So in reality, they’ve denied my dogs new illness because they’ve decided he must have had it before (in spite of several tests proving otherwise during his coverage period). Do yourself a favor and get a pet insurance company that actually pays humans to review claims and doesn’t just run things through AI.
