How does Healthy Paws pet insurance work?

Healthy Paws pet insurance helps customers cover the cost of unexpected medical expenses for their pets for a monthly price starting at around $15 for cats and $20 for dogs. Customers can use its website or mobile app to apply for coverage and submit claims. It claims to process 99% of claims within two days. Once approved, your pet's coverage starts after a 15-day waiting period.

Healthy Paws pet insurance plans

Healthy Paws pet insurance offers one straightforward plan that covers up to 90% of the bill for accidents, illnesses and emergency care. Healthy Paws doesn't put a cap on lifetime, annual or per-incident claim payouts. The plan doesn't cover preexisting conditions, but this is typical of most pet insurance carriers.

For cat and dog plans, Healthy Paws covers* the following:

  • Illnesses
  • Accidents
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Cancer
  • Diagnostic treatment
  • X-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds
  • Surgery
  • Hospitalization
  • Prescription medications
  • Emergency care
  • Specialty care
  • Alternative treatment

*Not applicable for preexisting conditions.

Healthy Paws does not cover:

  • Preexisting conditions
  • Examination fees
  • Cruciate ligament tears, if one leg was affected before the policy began and the other leg becomes injured
  • Preventative healthcare (vaccines, titer tests, flea control, heartworm medication, deworming, nail trimming and grooming)
  • Parasite control (neither internal nor external parasites)
  • Dental health care (unless directly related to an accident)
  • Spaying or neutering
  • Anal gland expression
  • Elective procedures — generally refers to any procedure that isn’t recommended by a veterinarian specifically to improve the health of the pet (ear cropping, declawing, etc.)
  • Boarding
  • Behavior modification (including training, therapy or medication)
  • Training

Healthy Paws pet insurance cost

The Healthy Paws pet insurance cost for monthly premiums starts at $15 for cats and $20 for dogs, but the average monthly premium is around $30. Healthy Paws reimburses up to 90% of your bill and provides three deductible options: $100, $250 or $500. The main factors that determine your pet insurance rates are where you live, your plan's deductible, the type of animal you're insuring and its age and breed.

Healthy Paws pet insurance plans require a full, comprehensive (nose-to-tail) examination of your pet by a licensed veterinarian in order to be eligible for coverage. The timing of this exam depends on your pet’s age. In most case, pets five years old and younger must have an exam within the first 12 months (or within 15 days, if adopted from a rescue/shelter). Pets six years old and older must have an exam within 30 days and the 15-day for adoptees still applies.

Age limits

ConsumerAffairs attempted to obtain an online quote for an 11-year-old female Bengal cat in New York. The system rejected the application and referred out to other companies as potentially better fits. Although Healthy Paws states it covers pets from 8 weeks to 14 years old, we were unable to proceed with a quote for this cat.

A second attempt was made for a 10-year-old male Golden Retriever in the same area, which was also rejected. However, when using a San Diego ZIP code, we got a quote of $269.83 per month at 60% reimbursement with a $1,000 annual deductible.

As with most pet insurance companies, quotes depend heavily on geographic location, pet type, breed, age and selected terms (reimbursement rate, deductible and payout limits). This reiterates the importance of obtaining quotes from multiple providers before purchasing.

I can’t say enough good things about Healthy Paws! As the proud parent of a lovable Saint Bernard and a sweet King Charles Spaniel, having reliable pet insurance is a must—and Healthy Paws has exceeded all my expectations. From day one, the enrollment process was incredibly easy, and everything was clearly explained. Their coverage is straightforward and generous, which has given me so much peace of mind. My Saint Bernard needed surgery followed by her first seizures (common with larger breeds), and Healthy Paws was right there—fast, compassionate, and supportive. The claims process was simple and quick; I had my reimbursement within a few days, and it covered exactly what they promised. No hidden surprises from their coverage explanation and deductible amounts. They even sent a personal note checking in on how she was doing—such a kind touch that shows how much they truly care.

My little King Charles Spaniel also had a bout with an unexpected illness, and once again, Healthy Paws stepped up. They made it possible for us to focus on getting her the best care instead of stressing about finances. I genuinely feel like Healthy Paws is a partner in my pets' health, not just an insurance company. If you love your pets like family (as we all do), Healthy Paws is absolutely worth it. Best decision we’ve made for our furry family members!

I wanted to share a wonderful experience I had with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance recently. My pet, Toto, had a health scare, and I was relieved to have Healthy Paws by our side. Their support and coverage were outstanding, allowing Toto to receive the best medical care available. From the moment I contacted them, I was impressed with the swift response and genuine concern for Toto's well-being. The claims process was straightforward and hassle-free, with clear communication every step of the way. Their dedication to providing excellent service truly shone through.

I can't imagine how Toto has been living in pain and all vets had diagnosed it wrong. His autoimmune medication really helped him out and he has shown great signs of improvement. He has been running around and even playing with us. We have come a long way in last 1 month from me picking him up in my arms and taking him out for pee and poop because of pain in legs to now running and catching balls. 😊 Thank you again to healthy Paws team to help enable this transformation for my baby. It was a very costly diagnostic and treatment and I would not have been able to do it all alone without your help.

To Whom It May Concern, I brought home a sweet Havanese puppy named Peanut from a local breeder who had been breeding for over 30 years. We instantly fell in love with him. Although, I was initially unsure about getting pet insurance, I ultimately decided to move forward with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance and I’m so glad I did!

A year later, Peanut began having seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. I reached out to the breeder, who assured me that in all her years of breeding, she had never encountered a dog with this condition, Peanut was her first. As time went on, Peanut was also diagnosed with liver disease, then heart disease, and most recently, bowel disease.

I honestly don’t know what I would have done without Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. To date, Peanut's has had over 220 claims. Without insurance, I can’t imagine how I would have managed the financial burden. Not only does Healthy Paws consistently and efficiently cover claims, but they also take the time to check in on Peanut. They treat him like family, and that level of care means the world to me. I wholeheartedly recommend Healthy Paws to anyone with a pet. Their support has allowed me to focus on loving and caring for Peanut, rather than worrying about overwhelming vet bills. I am beyond grateful for their compassion, reliability, and continued support.

      Sincerely,

      Donna & Peanut

I have had Healthy Paws Insurance for almost 15 years on 3 dogs. Prior to that I had two different dog insurance companies that I insured my animals with, but something was missing so I decided to research which pet insurance companies are the best overall and everything pointed to Healthy Paws. I am grateful that I found this company to give me peace of mind if something ever happens to one of our precious family members. In 2015 I was told I needed to see a cancer specialist for my German Shepherd Bruno because it was diagnosed with Vessel Cancer. After seeing the specialist, I was told that the costs to try cure the cancer would be over $11K. I knew I had Healthy Paws on my side, and I did! My dog made it through all the Chemo appointments (10) and survived another 6.5 years with us. My entire cost for the treatments was about $2K. I thought for sure the insurance company would cancel Bruno, but they never did.

When I called Healthy Paws to let them know that we had to put Bruno down at home they sent a wonderful card, and the agent suggested I submit for a possible reimbursement to have the doctor come to the home which cost about $550. To my surprise Healthy Paws reimbursed me a portion of the cost. Recently after this past Christmas we noticed our dog Pandora (Terrier mix) neck started to swell and it was getting bigger, so we rushed her to our vet who stated this was out of their league and suggested we go to an emergency clinic upon arrival she was admitted, and surgery performed to remove the welt and submit for a biopsy. The results were inconclusive with 4 doctors calling it a mystery.

After surgery she developed a heart murmur and pneumonia. We had to go back multiple times, and the costs were adding up to around $9K. I submitted the claims, and they were reviewed and reimbursed within 2-3 days. We have a month to go on medication for Pandora and hope that she heals from whatever these welts are that are popping up on her body. If not, it is onto a CT scan which can cost a lot of money. I don't have to worry because I have Healthy Paws in my corner and supporting my animals 100%. If you are considering pet insurance you will not be disappointed joining the Healthy Paws Family!!!

Our almost 8 1/2 year old Labrador retriever, Jeff **, has been insured with Healthy Paws pet insurance since 2021. I just want to share our wonderful experience with our first claim with them during one of Jeff’s most challenging health events he has ever had to go through. He had a GI bleed of undetermined etiology on March 15th, 2023 and spent 6 days at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital in Southfield, Michigan and was in critical care for the first four nights, unable to eat or drink anything on his own. He completely relied on the hospital staff for his care and ultimate survival. He has since recovered 100% and we couldn't be happier. Our boy is family and we love him very much.

Healthy Paws paid 80% of every bill we submitted. You can imagine how much his care and medication costs were for those 6 days and subsequent follow-up care to this day. We are thankful for them being there for us during this difficult time and would highly recommend them! In addition to the financial support they have given, they also check in periodically on our boy just to see how he is doing and to send him big virtual hugs! Healthy Paws IS family and we will forever sing their praises!

We have had a good experience to date with Healthy Paws. The policy has covered what the policy documents state will be covered based on our submitted claims for our dog who needed TPLO surgery. Each claim has been processed within a reasonable time period with outcomes as expected based on policy documents. We'll be glad to renew our policy when up for renewal as our dogs are members of our family and we like the peace of mind of having a good insurance policy for them.

They make it so easy and are very fair with all of their policies. I can't imagine not having pet Insurance. Peace of mind is invaluable. Thank you again.

Price continues to go up and now received a notice that it’s going up again, this time from $71 to $162! Customer service is almost non-existent. They reject claims with no explanation and are impossible to reach. I needed to get confirmation about whether they would or would not cover a procedure. Refused to confirm if it would be covered, they said I would have to get the procedure done and then submit it to see if it would be approved. I tried for months to get help as I could not afford the procedure on my own and not one person would help. They are horrible.

I've read many negative reviews for Healthy Paws. I have come to the conclusion that you may be far better off contributing to your own "Pet savings account" in the financial markets. We currently hold two Healthy Paws policies. They are usually great out of the gate and then yearly price you out of any reasonable affordability due to "rising vet rates and any other excuse they can. I take responsibility for my pets by maintaining individual accounts since they were both puppies and yes we are still with Healthy Paws for the time being but the handwriting is on the wall. This is their business model and I think it should be regulated....My 2 cents.
