The company also wants to install electric vehicle charging stations at store locations

Starbucks says it’s going all-in on sustainability. To jumpstart its effort to cut its waste in half by 2030, the coffee chain says it is moving away from single-use plastics and piloting reusable cup programs.

The company previously pledged to cut water use and waste to meet new sustainability standards.

By the end of 2022, Starbucks customers can bring their own personal reusable cup to any of their U.S. or Canadian locations – no matter if they’re getting their drink inside or via a drive-thru. If a customer doesn’t have a reusable cup, the company says it will provide one for them to take and use as needed.

Starbucks is serious about pushing the sustainability envelope. The company said it will also test out the concept of cup washing stations at café counters.

“We have a bold long-term sustainability vision and ambitious goals for 2030,” said Starbucks President and CEO, Kevin Johnson. “Starbucks partners around the world are passionate about protecting our planet and are at the very center of driving the innovation that enables us to give more than we take from the planet.”

Starbucks to also add electric vehicle charging stations

Starbucks is not resting solely on its coffee laurels. As further proof of its commitment to renewable energy and decarbonization projects in the U.S., the company is getting into the fast-growing electric vehicle game by investing in a pilot program with Volvo Cars. By the end of 2022, Volvo-branded EV chargers will be added at 15 Starbucks locations from Denver to Seattle.

The company said the chargers will be incrementally spread out at Starbucks stores every 100 miles or so.

“These DC Fast Chargers [will add] much needed peace of mind for EV drivers, who we know see today’s limited charging infrastructure as a major barrier to purchase. While customer’s cars are recharging outside, drivers can relax comfortably inside with their favorite Starbucks beverage,” the company stated.
