Toyota Motor North America is recalling roughly 228,000 model year 2016 and 2017 Toyota Tacomas in the U.S.
The recalled vehicles have rear differentials that may leak oil. Operating the vehicle continuously in this condition could damage the rear differential, resulting in noise and reduced propulsion.
In some cases the rear differential could seize, resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
What to do
Toyota dealers will check the rear differential for any oil leakage. If no leaks are found, all fasteners will be re-tightened. If there is a leak, dealers will replace the rear differential carrier gasket with a new one and install new fasteners.
If rear differential components are damaged, the rear differential carrier assembly will be replaced with a new one at no cost to customers.
Toyota will notify all known owners of the recalled vehicles by first class mail starting in the middle of June.
Owners may call Toyota customer service for more information at 1-800-331-4331.
