Mercedes-Benz issues ‘Do Not Drive’ recall for 292,000 cars

Consumers who are driving older Mercedes-Benz GL, ML, and R-Class vehicles are being told to park them until an important safety issue can be resolved.

The Do Not Drive order was voluntarily issued for more than 292,000 model-year 2006 to 2012 cars because of a problem that could cause the brakes to fail, according to a consumer alert posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

The issue is so dangerous that the automaker will accommodate owners who don’t feel confident driving their cars to the dealership for repairs. The company said it will send a tow truck to transport the affected vehicles to the nearest dealer.

Corroded brake boosters

The problem lies in potentially corroded brake boosters. The company says corrosion could severely affect braking capability, increasing the risk of a crash.

“After extended time in the field and in conjunction with water exposure, the corrosion might lead to a leakage of the brake booster,” the company said in its alert. “Leakage in the brake booster could lead to reduced braking power and an increase in the brake pedal forces required to slow the vehicle and/or to potentially increased stopping distances.”

The company said drivers may notice a change in the feel of the brake pedal and/or hissing/airflow noises when applying the brake pedal. That could be a sign that there is corrosion in the brake booster.

Mercedes-Benz engineers are also concerned that a particularly strong or hard braking maneuver could cause mechanical damage to the brake booster in rare cases of very severe corrosion. Should that happen, they say the connection between the brake pedal and brake system would fail.

“In such a rare case, it would not be possible to slow or stop the vehicle via the service brake,” the company warns.

What to do

Owners of model year 2006 to 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL, ML, and R-Class models should immediately determine if their vehicle is part of the recall. The easiest way to do that is to enter the car’s vehicle information number (VIN) into the NHTSA recall database located here.

Owners who have additional questions can contact Mercedes-Benz USA by calling 888-327-4236.

Once at the dealership, recalled vehicles will be inspected. Those that do not show advanced corrosion may continue to be driven with no further action.

When technicians find advanced corrosion, they will run additional tests to ensure that the brake booster will function. Vehicles that pass the additional test may be driven for up to two years but must return for an additional repair.

Vehicles that do not pass the additional test will require a brake booster replacement, which will be done at no charge.

Mercedes-Benz to go all-electric by 2025

Daimler said Thursday that its Mercedes-Benz brand plans to go fully electric by the end of the decade, as long as “market conditions allow” the transition. Beginning in 2025, Daimler said all of Mercedes-Benz’ “newly launched vehicle architectures will be electric-only.”

“The EV shift is picking up speed — especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs,” Ola Källenius, CEO of both Daimler and Mercedes-Benz, said in a statement. “The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade.”

The Germany-based automaker said it plans to launch three electric-only architectures in 2025: MB.EA, which will relate to medium and large passenger cars; AMG.EA, which will be dedicated to performance vehicles; and VAN.EA, for light commercial vehicles and vans.

The company said it will be investing more than 40 billion euros, or roughly $47 billion, in research and development projects between 2022 and 2030 in order to facilitate the shift to electric vehicles.

“By managing this faster transformation while safeguarding our profitability targets, we will ensure the enduring success of Mercedes-Benz,” Källenius continued. “Thanks to our highly qualified and motivated workforce, I am convinced that we will be successful in this exciting new era."

Kia, Mercedes-Benz dominate top cars of 2021 list

Kia has driven off with the top award in two key categories of Edmunds’ top-rated cars of 2021 -- sedans and SUVs.

The awards are determined by Edmunds' extensive new vehicle testing and proprietary rating process. According to the automotive publisher, and the winners represent the best vehicles available to car buyers today.

"At Edmunds, our primary focus is to help inform and empower consumers as they search for their next vehicle,” said Alistair Weaver, editor-in-chief at Edmunds. “And that's why, unlike other industry awards that tend to highlight the hottest new vehicles that just happened to debut this year, the Edmunds Top-Rated Awards recognize the best vehicles on sale today, irrespective of when they were launched."

The Kia K5 was named the best sedan. Edmunds says the K5 edged out more established sedans like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6. The editors praised the K5's ride, comparing it to that of some luxury sedans.

“At highway speeds, the K5 is nearly silent inside,” the editors wrote. “Kia has also made sure it comes with the latest technology features, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.”

Best SUV

For the second year in a row, Edmunds named the Kia Telluride as the best SUV. It was singled out for a combination of “high-quality design, family-friendly functionality, and impressive value.” It won similar praise in 2019.

“A year has passed, and a number of new competitors have arrived, but none have been good enough to dethrone the Telluride,” the Edmunds editors wrote.

Mercedes-Benz was the only other manufacturer to come out on top in two categories. Its Mercedes-Benz E Class was named top luxury sedan and the Mercedes-Benz GLE placed first among luxury SUVs.

Edmunds praised the E Class for its “fastidious attention to detail, impressive technology, and a near-total lack of noise from the outside world.” It described the GLE as "stylish, spacious and packed with technology that really works,” noting there is plenty of competition in that category.

Best Pickup

The Ford F150 earned top honors among pickup trucks; the Tesla Model 3 was named best EV; the new Ford Mustang Mach-E was named best luxury EV while the Chevrolet Corvette was named the best sports car for 2021.

"Each year, Edmunds' editors drive over half a million miles and conduct thousands of hours of testing on more than 300 vehicles,” Weaver said. “Car shoppers looking for vehicles that deliver a best-in-class experience need to look no further than the Edmunds Top-Rated Awards."

Kia has driven off with the top award in two key categories of Edmunds’ top-rated cars of 2021 -- sedans and SUVs.The awards are determined by Edmunds'...
