Honda and GM to co-develop electric cars priced under $30,000

Much of the effort will be centered around building 'next generation' batteries

General Motors and Honda have entered into a partnership to build a new series of electric vehicles. That alone is an interesting development, but what’s even more interesting for consumers is that the price for those EVs is expected to be under $30,000 – almost half the price of what Kelley Blue Book says EVs were selling for late last year.

The GM-Honda EV series is expected to go on sale in 2027 starting in North America. Compact crossover vehicles will be manufactured under the partnership -- a type of vehicle that both automakers are familiar with; GM has the Chevy Blazer, Equinox, and Tahoe, and Honda has the CR-V, HR-V, and Pilot. The compact crossover segment is also the largest in the world, with an annual volume of more than 13 million vehicles. That affords the companies a better chance of addressing the automotive market’s sweet spot.

Affordability will be a key issue if automakers want to turn the corner on EVs. The market for these vehicles continues to grow, but buyers are typically older and make more than $100,000 annually – a fact not lost on GM or Honda. In a call with reporters, GM's Ken Morris said the two companies expect their co-developed EVs to be priced below $30,000.

“GM and Honda will share our best technology, design and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable EVs on a global scale, including our key markets in North America, South America, and China,” said GM chair and CEO Mary Barra.

“Honda is committed to reaching our goal of carbon neutrality on a global basis by 2050, which requires driving down the cost of electric vehicles to make EV ownership possible for the greatest number of customers,” added Honda president and CEO Toshihiro Mibe.

Advancements with EV batteries

The companies said one of the biggest benefits that brought them together is their desire to find a way to build batteries that are more affordable and “next generation.” For that element, the focus will be based on a new global architecture using next-generation Ultium battery technology.

General Motors recently called its Ultium Charge 360 a “holistic charging experience.” It claims that its process can remove any headaches that a car owner might encounter if they decide to buy an electric vehicle.

Not to be left out, Honda says it’s also making progress with batteries. The company says its all-solid-state battery technology is a candidate to become the core element of future EVs and that it has already established a demonstration line in Japan for all-solid-state batteries and is making further progress toward mass-production.

Toyota passes GM as America’s best-selling automaker

One expert says the company did a better job of handling supply issues and the chip shortage

When Toyota announced its North American year-end 2021 sales figures on Tuesday, it had lots to crow about – namely, knocking General Motors (GM) off the throne as the top-selling automaker in the U.S. It’s the first time a foreign automaker has taken first place in America.

The company not only added that title to its resume, but it will hang on as the number one seller of electrified vehicles for the 22nd consecutive year. Its Toyota Camry, Highlander, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, and Lexus NX will also keep their trophies as the best-selling models in their respective segments. Toyota also earned the most Kelley Blue Book Awards in 2021, with its RAV4 named car of the year.

However, the short-term forecast is a bit cloudy. In 2021, the company sold 2,332,262 vehicles, 11.5% more per day than it did in 2020. However, it comes hobbling into 2022 with reports that its December U.S. 2021 sales were down 30.2% when compared to December 2020.

How Toyota pulled it off

Toyota – just like every other automotive company – had to live through supply chain knee-capping and a cataclysmic chip shortage in 2021, both of which were brought on by the pandemic. The difference for Toyota was that it just managed the situation better.

How? That’s the question ConsumerAffairs put to Bill Rieke, Adjunct Instructor for Supply Chain Management at the Williams College of Business at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

“Toyota, which is the automotive pioneer for ‘just-in-time’ manufacturing, has proactively moved away from this pure ‘lean’ management approach,” Rieke said. “Instead they have built resiliency into their production planning to be more like ‘just-in-case’ which has served them well during Covid-19 allowing them to have broader access to computer chips and other parts necessary to build and sell a complete car.”

Consumers frustrated by chip shortage

GM may have also made Toyota’s rise easier if consumer opinions count. Redell, of Farmington, Mich., recently chided the company for how it handled a situation when he brought in his Cadillac for service.

“I was told by the Service Advisor that they have no vehicles for loaners due to the chip shortage. But furthermore I was told that I can go and rent a vehicle at Enterprise or whatever and then contact GM to see if I could be reimbursed,” Redell wrote

“As a frustrated customer I asked the Service Advisor [why] as a customer who has a bumper to bumper warranty, what if I don’t have the income to be able to rent a vehicle at this time. The Service Advisor had nothing to say.”

GM promises to build 42,000 electric vehicle charging stations

The stations will be built across the U.S. and Canada

Last month, Ford announced that it was making its largest investment ever in electric vehicles. On Monday, it was Tesla and Hertz staking a claim on the EV growth chart. On Tuesday, General Motors (GM) created its own EV buzz by announcing that it plans to build 42,000 electric vehicle charging stations in the U.S. and Canada.

When the automaker’s $750 million Dealer Community Charging Program begins in 2022, it will be a cooperative effort between the company and its dealers -- one with a bit of a twist. Instead of trying to capture larger markets where good EV infrastructure already exists -- like Vermont and California -- the company and its dealers will work together to broaden access to charging in rural and urban areas where EV charging access is limited -- like Kentucky and Louisiana.

GM also plans to set the stations up at places where there’s some built-in density of potential EV users. That includes workplaces, multi-unit dwellings, sports and entertainment venues, and colleges and universities.

All for one, one for all

The automaker plans to partner with other EV charging networks to make its charging stations available to all EV customers, not just those who purchase an electric GM model. Officials say this will help simplify the charging experience by allowing drivers to find and use stations that they can pay for through the GM EV app.

Dovetailing the breadth of its own network with other charging networks will allow consumers to access nearly 85,000 charging spots throughout the U.S. and Canada. As of February 2021, there were around 97,600 charging outlets and 40,600 charging stations across the U.S.

"We want to give customers the right tools and access to charging where and when they need it, while working with our dealer network to accelerate the expansion of accessible charging throughout the U.S. and Canada, including in underserved, rural and urban areas," said GM President Mark Reuss.

Last month, Ford announced that it was making its largest investment ever in electric vehicles. On Monday, it was Tesla and Hertz staking a claim on the EV...

GM tells some Chevy Bolt owners to park at least 50 feet from other vehicles

The automaker confirms at least 10 fires caused by the battery defects

There’s more bad news for Chevrolet Bolt owners. General Motors says some owners of the recalled electric vehicle (EV) should not only leave the cars parked outside, they should keep them at least 50 feet from other vehicles.

The reason is a risk of fire caused by two defects in the battery that powers the car. The defects are behind the recall of 142,000 of the EVs sold since 2016. In August, GM added 73,000 vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada to the recall list. The company previously recalled 69,000 2017-2019 models.

The late August recall was triggered by two reports of Bolt battery fires in vehicles that had already received a repair. In late July, GM engineers said they had identified a second “rare manufacturing defect” that increases the vehicles’ risk of catching fire. Although officials didn’t say exactly what the defects are, it said the problem stems from the cells that make up the Bolt’s battery pack.

All Bolts covered by recall

“With this expansion, all Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles are now recalled due to the risk of the high-voltage battery pack catching fire,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement at the time. “The recall applies to all Bolt vehicles, including those that may have received an earlier recall repair for the fire risk issue.”

GM says it is currently working with its battery supplier, LG Corp., to repair or replace the battery packs. Until then, it has warned owners of the recalled vehicles to take the following precautions:

  • Park the vehicles outside a safe distance from structures

  • Limit battery charges to 90% capacity

  • Recharge more frequently to so that the battery does not drop below 70 miles of range

  • Park at least 50 feet from other vehicles

GM says the battery defect is rare, but the company has confirmed at least 10 fires caused by overheating batteries.

GM recalls Buick Regals & Lacrosses and Chevrolet Malibus

The rear toe links may fracture

Computer chip shortage forces GM to pause production again

A broad spectrum of consumer products is also feeling the chip pinch

The chip shortage that’s run roughshod on automakers took a nasty turn on Thursday when General Motors (GM) said it would dramatically cut its North American vehicle production because of the situation.

This marks the second time that GM has halted production because of the chip shortage in the last two months.

Who knows how the chip shortage will play out long-term for the automaker, but it’s either extending or adding downtimes at eight plants in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to cut its immediate losses. To start, much of the production trimming is reported to last for two weeks. Sedans are apparently getting a reprieve, but GM’s full-size and midsize pickup trucks like the Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Terrain, and Chevrolet Trailblazer will be unaffected.

“Although the situation remains complex and very fluid, we remain confident in our team’s ability to continue finding creative solutions to minimize the impact on our highest-demand and capacity-constrained vehicles,” the company said in a statement Thursday.

Although the industry hoped it would only be a short-term issue, the chip shortage has spiraled out of control. Some industry analysts have said it’s possible that the problem could last as long as late 2022.

The long-tail effect of the chip shortage

Not only has the chip shortage impacted automotive consumers, but it has also affected the production of electronic devices and home appliances.

Appliance sales have soared during the pandemic, especially after people got their CARES checks. One electronics company -- LG -- even went so far as ditching its smartphone division so that it could concentrate on the home appliance market.

If you’ve waited until now to think about new kitchen appliances, you may want to pack a picnic basket because it’s going to be a while.

“If you’ve been trying to get a home renovation project started, you may be waiting for your new range, fridge, or dishwasher,” said Francoise von Trapp of 3DIncites. “I was one of the lucky ones! I renovated my kitchen in February, and everything was in stock. But that’s not the case for everyone. If you can get your hands on the latest appliances, chances are they will cost more than they did two years ago.”

GM offers another glimpse of the electric Silverado

Chevrolet is firming up plans to compete in the EV truck sweepstakes

Tesla is building its Cybertruck, Ford is busy on its F-150 Lightning. Not to be left out, General Motors is providing another glimpse of its previously announced all-electric pickup.

It’s also providing new details. Previously the truck was described as “Silverado-like.” This week GM said the truck will be an EV version of its popular pickup and be called the Silverado All-Electric.

In a major disclosure, announced in this video posted to YouTube, the automaker said the new EV truck will feature four-wheel steering. Instead of the steering wheel turning just the two front tires, it will turn all four, providing a tighter turn ratio.

When GM announced the new truck last month it said it would travel 400 miles on a single charge and compete with consumer pickups planned by its rivals. The company has not said when the new Silverado All-Electric would go into production nor what it would cost.

The competition

Ford’s F-150 Lightning, which will be available next spring, will start at $40,000 -- a price that compares favorably with the gasoline-powered version.

The Silverado is Chevrolet’s best-selling truck and comes in several different models. It was introduced in 1999 and shares design and mechanical characteristics with the GMC Sierra.

The Silverado is rated 4 out of 5 stars by ConsumerAffairs reviewers, with most of the negative points relating to repair issues. But Gerald of Newman, Ga., is among the majority who is happy with his truck.

“I own an ‘02 Silverado,” Gerald wrote in a ConsumerAffairs review. “It’s an extended cab Z71 with the 5.3L V8. 172k miles in and this truck is running as strong as ever! It’s my daily driver and I have had no troubles at all, just routine maintenance.”

The Silverado All-Electric is not the only EV truck GM plans to introduce. The all-electric Hummer will come out first, but with a price tag of around $80,000, it probably won’t compete with the F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck.

GM announces production cuts on trucks due to chip shortage

Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles will stop being produced next week

General Motors has announced that it will halt production of most large pickup trucks due to the global chip shortage. The automaker said Wednesday that its plants in Michigan, Indiana, and Mexico will stop producing Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups next week.

“The global semiconductor shortage remains complex and very fluid, but GM’s global purchasing and supply chain, engineering and manufacturing teams continue to find creative solutions and make strides working with the supply base to minimize the impact to our highest-demand and capacity-constrained vehicles, including full-size trucks and SUVs for our customers,” GM spokesman David Barnas said in a statement.

These “scheduling adjustments” will also give it time to “complete unfinished vehicles at the impacted assembly plants and ship those units to dealers to help meet the strong customer demand for our products,” the automaker said.

GM said the affected facilities will resume normal operations the week of August 2.

Auto industry struggling

While the chip shortage has forced other automakers to halt production this year, GM has been able to keep producing large pickups by relying on different supply chain tactics and building some vehicles without all the needed parts. The company has also excluded some features that require chips.

Earlier this month, the automaker announced that wireless charging pads would be cut from the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the 2021 GMC Yukon (made after July 12).

The auto industry as a whole has suffered greatly as a result of the global chip shortage. Some companies have adapted by temporarily shutting down assembly lines or waiting to fully assemble vehicles until chips arrive. As a result, overall production has decreased and prices have increased.

The global shortage of semiconductor chips is expected to cost automakers $110 billion in revenue in 2021, according to consulting firm AlixPartners.

GM to exclude wireless charging pads from some vehicles due to chip shortage

The automaker says it’s still being affected by the semiconductor situation

General Motors is pulling wireless smartphone charging from several of its new SUVs due to the ongoing microchip shortage.

The feature is being dropped from the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the 2021 GMC Yukon (made after July 12). The automaker said the charging pads will also be excluded from some 2022 Buick Enclaves, Chevy Traverses, and Cadillac XT5s and XT6s made after August 2.

For the past few months, GM has been reiterating that its supply chain organization is continuing to make progress in working with its supply base to “mitigate the near-term impacts of the semiconductor situation.”

“GM continues to leverage every available semiconductor to build and ship our most popular and in-demand products, including our highly profitable full-size trucks and SUVs for our customers,” the company said in a statement. “However, the semiconductor situation continues to remain fluid globally.”

Buyers of the vehicles without wireless charging pads will get a $75 credit. The automaker is also offering a $50 credit for vehicles that don’t have the HD radio feature that is usually included.

The auto industry has been forced to make a number of changes since early this year due to the global chip shortage. GM to invest $35 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025

The company plans to open two new battery plants in the U.S. in the coming years

General Motors (GM) has already gone all-in when it comes to electric vehicles. Earlier this year, the automaker announced that it would only be selling these kinds of vehicles by the year 2035.

To help bolster that effort, the company announced on Wednesday that it will increase its spending on electric and autonomous vehicles to $35 billion through 2025. The company said the commitment represents a 75% increase from its initial commitment to these technologies.

“We are investing aggressively in a comprehensive and highly-integrated plan to make sure that GM leads in all aspects of the transformation to a more sustainable future,” said CEO Mary Barra.

Opening new battery factories

As part of its new investment, GM announced that it will be opening two new battery cell manufacturing plants in the U.S. The company is moving quickly to ensure it’s ready for what it believes will be a larger adoption of electric vehicles in the near future.

“GM is targeting annual global EV sales of more than 1 million by 2025, and we are increasing our investment to scale faster because we see momentum building in the United States for electrification, along with customer demand for our product portfolio,” Barra said.

“There is a strong and growing conviction among our employees, customers, dealers, suppliers, unions and investors, as well as policymakers, that electric vehicles and self-driving technology are the keys to a cleaner, safer world for all,” she added.

While GM is certainly making a bid to become a leader in the electric vehicle market, it has plenty of competition from other automakers. Tesla is still regarded by many as a leading automaker in the electric market, and other companies like Ford and Volvo are making their own investments to shore up their electric offerings.

More than 285,000 GM vehicles are being recalled

The company said an airbag indicator light may be malfunctioning

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is recalling 285,622 General Motors vehicles that could have a faulty airbag malfunction warning light. NHTSA says it could be a safety issue and should be repaired.

GM alerted the agency to the issue and requested the recall. The recall includes the Buick Envision, Cadillac CT4 and CT5, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Corvette, Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. All are 2021 models.

GM vehicles have a communications gateway module that sends messages to the airbags. If it malfunctions while trying to process information it could cause the airbag malfunction indicator light to turn on and off inconsistently.

The problem

If the airbag warning light comes on when there is no problem with the airbag, the user could be led to incorrectly believe the vehicle airbag has malfunctioned. The bigger problem is when there is a problem and the light doesn’t come on.

GM says the fix isn’t that complicated. GM dealers will be equipped to update the software in the communications gateway module. As with all auto safety recalls, the work will be done at no charge to vehicle owners.

Vehicle owners included in the recall will get a letter from GM sometime in July. Owners who want to see if their GM vehicle is on the recall list can enter the VIN on the NHTSA database here.

It’s the second GM recall in a week. Previously the automaker recalled 2021 GMC Acadia, Cadillac XT5 And XT6 to repair a fuel line issue.

GM recalls Chevrolet Silverado 1500s &t Tahoes, and GMC Sierra 1500s

The driver's seat belt tensioner cable may separate

General Motors is recalling 2,568 model year 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500s, model year 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoes, and model year 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500s that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair.

The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle, causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

General Motors announces new ‘holistic charging’ approach for electric vehicles

The automaker is looking to simply the transition to an EV for consumers

General Motors has announced a new ‘holistic charging experience’ that it’s dubbed Ultium Charge 360. With the new charging approach, the automaker is aiming to remove any charging headaches that a customer may encounter -- or might think they’ll encounter -- if they buy an electric vehicle.

“There is a lot more to EV adoption than just buying the vehicle and just having a large connected network,” said Travis Hester, GM’s chief EV officer. “And our mission is to help every single person get over whatever anxiety they have, and help them into an EV in the most convenient way possible.”

Hester noted that GM plans to launch 30 EVs globally by the end of 2025 and that Ultium Charge 360 will help simplify both the at-home and public charging experience. Ultium Charge 360 integrates charging networks, GM vehicle mobile apps, and other products and services to help streamline the charging experience for those who own one of GM’s electric vehicles.

Those who utilize Ultium Charge 360 will get access to various charging services, including charge point operators, electric utilities, and government agencies. GM says this will “make home, workplace, public and fleet charging ubiquitous for customers.”

Ensuring a “seamless” experience

The company said it will also continue to update its mobile apps to “provide an even more intuitive mobile experience that makes navigating to a charging station, plugging into a charger and paying for charging simple.”

To help further ensure that the switch to an electric vehicle is “seamless,” GM said it is working to offer EV owners charging accessories and installation services that are “tailored to their lifestyle.”

“For example, GM will cover standard installation of Level 2 charging capability for eligible customers who purchase or lease a 2022 Bolt EUV or Bolt EV in collaboration with Qmerit,” the company said.

Hester said the “major functions” of Ultium Charge 360 will be available by September 2021.

General Motors extends plant shutdowns due to chip shortage

The semiconductor chip shortage is continuing to take a toll on automakers’ earnings

General Motors (GM) has announced that it’s extending its plant shutdowns due to the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage.

Plants will remain shut down at GM’s car and crossover plants in Kansas, Mexico, and Ontario, Canada. Initially, they were slated to remain closed until mid-March. The San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico will now be shuttered through the end of March, while the U.S. and Canada plants will remain closed until at least mid-April.

The automaker said the move is intended to ensure that there are enough chips to use in the production of its most “in-demand” full-size pickup trucks and SUVs.

“GM continues to leverage every available semiconductor to build and ship our most popular and in-demand products, including full-size trucks and SUVs for our customers,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday. “GM has not taken downtime or reduced shifts at any of its truck plants due to the shortage.”

Chip shortage affecting automakers’ earnings

The chip shortage has been blamed on the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has had a major impact on automakers. Last month, GM and Ford announced that they will produce fewer cars and trucks due to the shortage.

The chip shortage is expected to result in a staggering $60.6 billion revenue loss in the automotive industry as a whole this year, according to estimates from consulting firm AlixPartners.

Experts said the shortage was caused by the nation’s rapid economic recovery during the pandemic. At the start of the pandemic, semiconductor makers scaled back production in anticipation of a steep drop in demand.

Demand did decline at first, but the auto industry ended up recovering quickly when consumers adapted to online car shopping and purchases. When auto plants reopened, they quickly ran out of the semiconductor chips.

Last week, GM’s chief financial officer Paul Jaconbon said the chip shortage is improving. However, the company is still expecting the delays to lower its free cash flow by $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion in 2021.

GM files recall documents for millions of vehicles with faulty Takata airbag inflators

The recall comes at the request of the NHTSA

General Motors (GM) has officially filed recall documents with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in response to the agency’s petition that it recall vehicles with airbag inflators that could explode.

In November, the auto safety agency requested that GM recall millions of trucks and SUVs equipped with Takata airbag inflators. Now, the automaker says the recall campaign will kick off March 1.

GM originally contested the NHTSA’s decision, saying it didn’t believe the airbags in the vehicles in question were subject to the same deterioration as those in the other vehicles with Takata inflators that have been recalled.

“Based on data generated through independent scientific evaluation conducted over several years, we disagree with NHTSA’s position,” GM said in a statement at the time. "However, we will abide by NHTSA's decision and begin taking the necessary steps."

The NHTSA dismissed that argument, saying that it found that the GM inflators are in fact “at risk of the same type of explosion after long-term exposure to high heat and humidity as other recalled Takata inflators.”

Affected models

The trucks and SUVs involved in the recall include the 2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Yukon, and Yukon XL.

GM said the recall covers vehicles sold or registered in the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia or "Zone B."

Additionally, the recall includes certain 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming or "Zone C."

Look out for a recall notice

The vehicles affected are equipped with an airbag inflator that could degrade over time and eventually explode, resulting in “sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death,” the NHTSA said.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notice of the recall starting March 1.

General Motors doesn’t currently have a fix waiting in the wings. The NHTSA says owners can expect another letter at a later date saying that they can bring their truck or SUV to a dealer where a technician will install a new front passenger airbag at no cost.

GM says it will sell only electric vehicles by 2035

The promise is part of a bigger goal to go completely carbon-neutral by 2040

General Motors (GM) has announced that it plans to phase out all of its diesel and gas-powered vehicles by 2035, with the aim of going completely carbon neutral by 2040. The company said Thursday that it’s on track to meet its goal of using 100 percent renewable energy to power its U.S. facilities by 2030 and global facilities by 2035.

For several years now, GM has been striving to reduce its impact on the environment by moving toward an emissions-free future. The company has announced plans to release 30 new electric vehicles globally by 2025; more than 20 will be just for North America.

“For General Motors, our most significant carbon impact comes from tailpipe emissions of the vehicles that we sell — in our case, it’s 75 percent,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in a message on LinkedIn. “That is why it is so important that we accelerate toward a future in which every vehicle we sell is a zero-emissions vehicle.”

All-electric switch will still be profitable

Dane Parker, GM chief sustainability officer, added that the plans aren’t likely to have an impact on profitability.

“We feel this is going to be the successful business model of the future,” he said. “We know there are hurdles, we know there are technology challenges, but we’re confident that with the resources we have and the expertise we have that we’ll overcome those challenges and this will be a business model that we will be able to thrive in the future.”

Parker said the combination of a reduction in pricing and advancements in technologies has “made this an inflection point that we want to seize.”

GM recalls Buick Regals & Lacrosses, and Chevrolet Malibus

The rear toe link may fracture, reducing the driver's ability to control the vehicle

General Motors is recalling 213,128 model year 2012-2013 Buick Regals, model year 2013 Chevrolet Malibus, and model year 2010-2013 Buick Lacrosses sold or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia or Wisconsin.

These vehicles may have rear toe links that received excessive electrocoating (e-coat) corrosion protection, which could cause the e-coat to become brittle and break away when contacted by road debris.

Over time, the e-coat may chip away, exposing the metal toe link and making it more susceptible to corrosion. Corrosion may eventually cause the toe link to thin and ultimately to fracture.

A rear toe link fracture may reduce the driver's ability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

What to do

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear suspension toe links and adjuster fasteners free of charge.

Parts are not currently available. Owners will be mailed an interim notification on February 15, 2021. A second notification will be mailed when parts are available, currently expected to be around March 21, 2021.

Microsoft partnering with GM’s Cruise on self-driving car venture

The partnership brings Cruise’s valuation to $30 billion

Microsoft has announced that it’s teaming up with Cruise and General Motors to make the use of self-driving cars a not-too-distant reality.

Cruise, the self-driving subsidiary of GM, has entered a “long-term strategic partnership” with Microsoft to “accelerate the commercialization of self-driving vehicles.” In an announcement, Microsoft said Cruise will use its Azure cloud platform to deliver self-driving technology “at scale.”

“To unlock the potential of cloud computing for self-driving vehicles, Cruise will leverage Azure, Microsoft’s cloud and edge computing platform, to commercialize its unique autonomous vehicle solutions at scale,” the company said.

Microsoft, meanwhile, will use Cruise’s knowledge of how to serve transportation companies.

“Microsoft, as Cruise’s preferred cloud provider, will also tap into Cruise’s deep industry expertise to enhance its customer-driven product innovation and serve transportation companies across the globe through continued investment in Azure,” Microsoft said.

The software giant is also joining GM, Honda, and previous investors in an equity investment of $2 billion for Cruise. The investment brings Cruise’s valuation to $30 billion, a jump which should help the AV company financially survive the pandemic and compete with rivals like Waymo.

Accelerating the adoption of AVs

On Twitter, Cruise President and Chief Technical Officer Kyle Vogt said autonomous vehicles will be “a major lifestyle upgrade for billions of people, and one that requires almost zero effort to unlock.”

“Tech to do this is hard,” Vogt said. “It’s not just AI, but realtime, safety-critical AI. There's also manufacturing, industrializing new tech, and rollout of fleets. Few companies can acquire or already possess the critical mass of talent, capital, tech, and expertise to pull this off.”

“A handful of front-runner AV companies that look most likely to win are attracting substantially all of the best human capital and a huge chunk of the financial capital,” Vogt continued. “That is how a company without millions of customers can be valued at $30 billion. We’ve made some incredible progress towards this vision, but there is much left to do. Back to work!”

GM gives EV-skeptical Cadillac dealers $500,000 buyout option

The automaker is willing to cull Cadillac dealers on the path to becoming an all-electric brand

General Motors, which is currently aiming to go fully electric by 2030, is offering Cadillac dealerships a buyout if they aren’t interested in making the changes necessary to accommodate electric vehicles.

Mandated charging and service upgrades will total around $200,000, but GM has said it’s willing to give Cadillac dealerships up to $500,000 if they aren’t willing to invest in the company’s future as an electric vehicle brand.

The 880 Cadillac dealers in the U.S. will have until November 30 to decide whether or not to accept the buyout offer. Dealers who take the buyout will be able to acquire new Cadillacs through the end of 2021.

"We wanted to move fast and make sure dealers are ready for the acceleration," Cadillac North America Vice President Mahmoud Samara told Automotive News. "This is purely an option for those dealers who feel the EV journey is not suitable for them."

Last week, GM announced that it was expediting its shift to an all-electric future. The automaker plans to introduce 30 new models by the end of 2025. About half of the nation’s Cadillac dealers sell fewer than 50 vehicles each year.

GM to recall 7 million vehicles due to potentially deadly Takata airbags

Eighteen people have died and hundreds have reportedly been injured by these airbags in the U.S.

General Motors Corp. (GM) has announced that it plans to recall 7 million 2007-2014 model pickup trucks and SUVs that contain potentially lethal Takata airbags. Those models include Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups; Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and Avalanche vehicles; GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups; and various versions of the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon.

Takata airbags have a worrisome, costly, and tragic history. All told, tens of millions of vehicles have been recalled for Takata-related problems. In 2016, U.S. senators petitioned that certain Hondas with Takata airbags be taken off the road.

Between 2017-2018, Nissan reached a class action settlement over Takata airbag cases to the tune of $97.68 million, and Ford reached its own at a cost of $299.1 million. Defective Takata airbags claimed their 17th and 18th lives earlier this year.

Takata’s hazards

The primary issue with Takata’s recalled airbags is that their inflators are made with ammonium nitrate. This chemical can deteriorate over time, and the process can be accelerated by hot and humid conditions. When deterioration reaches a certain point, it can cause the airbags to explode and shoot shrapnel into the passenger cabin.

GM’s recall could very well close the door on Takata’s future since it accounts for the final group of cars manufactured with Takata airbag inflators. The decision comes after Takata submitted four unsuccessful petitions to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that sought to stop these recalls.

“The GM recall is a huge step in the right direction,” said Grace Brombach, an associate with U.S. PIRG. “Airbags exist to protect drivers, not to do more harm. Vehicle owners shouldn’t have to worry that their car’s airbag could be the thing that kills them during a minor fender bender or a more serious collision.”

How to check if your vehicle is affected

Vehicle owners can verify whether their GM vehicle is part of the latest recall by visiting https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering their seventeen digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

It might also be good for any vehicle owner to double check to see if their vehicle, especially previously owned ones, was part of any earlier recall.

GM to launch auto insurance based on connected car data

The automaker will use data on driving habits to set prices

General Motors announced Wednesday that it will launch an auto insurance offering that will use data from its OnStar connected vehicles. Insurance coverage rates will be based on miles driven and type of driving.

Driving habits like following the speed limit, acceleration behaviors, and avoiding hard braking will be taken into account when determining how much consumers will pay for coverage. Good drivers will be rewarded with “significant” savings, said Andrew Rose, president of OnStar Insurance Services.

“Consumers have chosen, with their consent, to share their driving data with GM,” Rose said. “With that information, we can let you know you can get savings because of your safe driving or not. And we can give you coaching as time goes by to become a better, safer driver.”

The automaker said consumers without GM vehicles will be allowed on OnStar insurance. However, there will be additional discounts for those who are GM owners or subscribe to OnStar’s services.

GM said it will begin a pilot this week for its own employees in Arizona. It will be offered to the general public by early 2021.

GM to invest $2 billion to renovate another factory for electric vehicle production

Automakers are continuing to plan for an all-electric future

General Motors (GM) is investing $2 billion to upgrade six of its U.S.-based plants.

Much of that funding will go towards modifying its Spring Hill, Tennessee assembly plant, which will become the company’s third vehicle manufacturing site to produce electric vehicles (EV). The all-new Cadillac LYRIQ will be the first EV produced at GM’s Spring Hill factory, and the plant renovation is scheduled to begin immediately.

GM’s investment is its latest move toward electric vehicles and part of the company’s new “triple zero” mantra: zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.

Is electric the future?

Over the past two years, GM, Volkwagen, BMW, and Fiat-Chrysler have all put a great number of eggs in the EV basket. While those manufacturers may not want to admit that Tesla has proven there’s a market for EVs, the Elon Musk-led carmaker has certainly challenged the automotive world’s good ‘ol boys. The fact remains that it’s consumers who will determine if a widespread EV marketplace is sustainable. Subaru, for one, is betting that consumers won’t give an electric car or truck the time of day.

All told, GM has committed to invest more than $4.5 billion in U.S. electric vehicle production since March 2019. Earlier, the company said its plans included releasing at least 20 new electric vehicles around the world by 2023.

“We are committed to investing in the U.S., our employees and our communities,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra in a news release. “These investments underscore the success of our vehicles today, and our vision of an all-electric future.”

GM plants reaping benefits

Pumping $2 billion into six of GM’s U.S. plants will bring the total amount that the company has invested or committed to invest in its U.S. manufacturing sites to more than $29 billion since 2009.

The company plans to move production of the next-generation GMC Acadia to the Lansing Delta Township Assembly -- an investment of more than $100 million. A total of $32 million will also be invested at Flint Assembly for future production of heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Both models have been a headache for GM over the last few years, issuing recall after recall.

Another $17 million has been set aside for GM’s Romulus, Michigan propulsion plant to enhance automation and increase capacity of GM’s 10-speed truck transmission found in full-size pickups like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade.

Another $3.5 million will be invested at Orion Assembly, and $750,000 will be invested at GM’s site in Brownstown Charter Township, Michigan. Both investments are related to additional production of the Cruise AV -- GM’s autonomous test vehicle -- at Orion Assembly.

GM and Honda partner up to develop future products together

Cost-savings, quicker reaction to changing technology, and consumer satisfaction are all possible upsides

General Motors (GM) and Honda have inked a deal to share vehicle platforms and technology in North America starting next year.

While the automakers say the deal they struck on Thursday is non-binding, their collective hope is to produce a wide variety of vehicles that would be sold under each company’s own banner. In addition, the two automotive giants would collaborate on connected services, research and development, and purchasing.

A 20-year old relationship

The business relationship between GM and Honda is nothing new. Actually, it began more than two decades ago and, over the last few years, has gained momentum as the two companies sought out commonalities in key technologies such as electrification and autonomous vehicles.

“Our companies have different cultures and unique strengths, but we share several common goals,” remarked Honda Executive Vice President Seji Kuraishi.

“This includes a commitment to creating sustainable mobility with Zero Collisions and Zero CO2 emissions. Toward this shared objective, GM has demonstrated a major proficiency in battery electric vehicles, while, at Honda, our approach includes a portfolio of internal combustion engine and hybrid-electric vehicle technologies as we bridge to an electrified future.”

Splitting the more sizable costs

On paper and in real life, analysts say this deal makes perfect sense. Michelle Krebs, an executive analyst for Autotrader, told the Detroit Free Press that we're likely to see more these kinds of partnerships as brands try to stay competitive and keep up with emerging technologies. She noted that it's better to "share than go it alone.

"This is very significant news. GM and Honda have been working on a number of projects over the years. This takes their relationship to a whole new level. What’s notable about Honda is that it has remained fervently independent while others merge or do joint ventures," Krebs said

Great upsides for the consumer

If Honda and GM’s two-heads-are-better-than-one thinking works out according to plan, it’s the consumer who might be the big winner. Not only does the combination allow the companies to be more nimble in addressing shifting ever-changing consumer tastes and regulatory requirements, but the vehicle-buying public might also get cars and trucks they’re happier with.

General Motors (GM) and Honda have inked a deal to share vehicle platforms and technology in North America starting next year. While the automakers say...

GM recalls GMC Sierra 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500 trucks

The rear fuel tank may overfill the front tank.

General Motors is recalling 18,574 model year 2016-2018 GMC Sierra 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500 trucks equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks.

The fuel-level sensor in the front tank may stick in a low-level position, allowing the rear tank to overfill the front tank.

If the front tank overfills, the excess pressure may cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank. The hole will leak fuel, which in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.

What to do

GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear-tank fuel-pump module, inspect the front tank and, if necessary, replace the front tank free of charge.

Owners were mailed interim notices informing them of the safety risk on March 5, 2019. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy becomes available.

GM's number for this recall is N182204190.
