Fiat Chrysler completes its merger with Peugeot

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) completed its merger with European automaker Peugeot over the weekend and announced the combined company has a new name -- Stellantis.

The move took some automotive experts by surprise since carmakers spend billions of dollars building name recognition for their brand. But others said the move resolves the sticky issue of which company name would come first, as in the case of Fiat Chrysler.

Stellantis is now the world’s fourth-largest automaker. When it finally announced its commitment to merge with Peugeot a year ago, FCA estimated the merged company would sell 8.7 million vehicles annually, with an operating profit margin of around 6.6 percent.

Both companies said the merger would put the new automaker in a strong financial position that would give it significant flexibility and the budget to carry out strategic plans and invest in new technologies throughout the cycle.

"This is a union of two companies with incredible brands and a skilled and dedicated workforce,” FCA CEO Mike Manley said in December 2019. Both have faced the toughest of times and have emerged as agile, smart, formidable competitors.”

FCA was created by the merger of Chrysler, one of the “big three” U.S. automakers, and Italian carmaker Fiat. Chrysler was founded in 1925 and struggled through the 1970s. However, it enjoyed a rebirth in the 1980s under the leadership of CEO Lee Iacocca.

Will stick with 14 brands

Executives at the combined company said Stellantis will continue to operate 14 current brands, seven from each company. However, it’s unclear which models will make the cut and which ones will go the way of the Studebaker.

In Car and Driver’s recent list of the best-selling vehicles in America, only three FCA models were in the top 25 -- the Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, and Ram pickup.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal suggests the Stellantis brand for an automaker may take some getting used to. It quotes several automotive writers who panned the name selection, saying Stellantis sounds more like a prescription medication.

One headline announcing the name change carried the headline, “Take two Stellantis and call me in the morning.”

Fiat Chrysler, PSA to complete merger by mid-January

On Monday morning, shareholders of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and France’s PSA -- parent company of Peugeot, Citroen and Opelar -- approved a merger of the two companies.

The $58 million tie-up will create the fourth-largest automaker in the world, behind Volkswagen, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, and Toyota. The combined company will go by the name Stellantis.

Officials have said the merger will yield billions in annual savings and speed up the development of electric and autonomous vehicles. The deal is expected to wrap up by mid-January.

“We can approve the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot SA because their commitments will facilitate entry and expansion in the market for small commercial vans,” European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager said in a December press release.

‘Together we will be stronger’

PSA has been looking for a partner for the past decade, and Fiat-Chrysler is reportedly seeking to boost its presence in China, where PSA has a strong presence. The merger won approval from 99.15 percent of FCA shareholders and 99.85 percent of PSA investors, according to results from the online vote.

“Stellantis will be a sort of conglomerate of brands, some great and some not so good and most very regional,” said Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois. “The merger will be a good opportunity for a reset.”

Those heading up the combined group said it will be better positioned to face the challenges spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, one of which was last year’s double digit drop in global car sales. The deal will also supposedly help the group keep up with the shift to more technologically advanced vehicles.

“We are aware of the fact that together we will be stronger than individually,” Carlos Tavares, the PSA chief tapped to lead the combined group, told shareholders on Monday.

On Monday morning, shareholders of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and France’s PSA -- parent company of Peugeot, Citroen and Opelar -- approved a merger o...

Fiat-Chrysler to go after Tesla with new electric vehicle program

Only a few years ago, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne was decisively against entering into the electric vehicle market. When the company released its first all-electric model, he publicly expressed his hope that few consumers would buy the vehicle, as the company lost over $10,000 on each one.

However, Marchionne has changed his tune since then, as he recently unveiled the company’s five-year strategy at a meeting in Italy, touting a rather extensive line of electric vehicles.

Not only will all future Fiat models soon be all-electric, both Alfa Romeo and Maserati will offer hybrid or plug-in versions of all future vehicles.

“Everything gets electrified,” said Tim Kuniskis, head of Alfa Romeo and Maserati. “Look at our product portfolio and you see we’re going after Tesla.”

Breaking into the electric market

Regulators in the electric car market have been pushing for cleaner, more energy-efficient vehicles on the roads. To meet these conditions, many luxury brands have released “compliance cars” -- vehicles that may not necessarily meet buyers’ expectations but comply with all regulations. Fiat’s e500 was a compliance car -- the same car Marchionne encouraged consumers not to buy.

However, by introducing electric options in the luxury market, Fiat-Chrysler is hoping to attract consumers with the countless advantages electric models have. According to a report by NBCNews, electric motors “develop maximum wheel-spinning torque the moment they’re turned on.” One of the only constraints is the amount of traction drivers get on their tires.

According to Kuniskis, the electric luxury models will have “a performance advantage.”

Kuniskis also discussed Fiat-Chrysler’s new “performance ladder” strategy. The bottom rung will have models with four-cylinder engines. The higher up the ladder you move, the more powerful the vehicles’ engines are; these include six, eight, and twin-turbo eight engines. The top of the ladder will have electric models, where Kuniskis says there will be “more horsepower and quicker 0 to 60 times.”

What’s to come for Fiat-Chrysler

Over the course of the next few years, Fiat-Chrysler will be releasing a number of new electric vehicles. Of the vehicle lines, Maserati tops the list when it comes to new releases, as it will be adding four new electric vehicles by 2022.

The company will soon be rolling out an all-electric four-door sedan -- very similar to the Tesla Model S -- but an all-electric Alfieri coupe is expected to be released first.

Critics question sanity of building the Dodge Demon

Most of the world's carmakers are concentrating on designing safe, efficient models that will evolve over the next decade or so into fully autonomous people-movers that will supposedly enhance safety, save energy, and so forth.

Then there's FCA (Fiat Chrysler), which seems determined to go its own way by building cars that share family characteristics with its more exotic macho marques, like Ferrari, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo.

The latest and rather extreme example is the $86,090 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. Yes, the price is rather demonic for a Dodge, but this isn't your father's Dodge. The Demon develops 840 horsepower and comes standard with racing slicks.

It also has a launch mode. This is all the rage in muscle-car circles these days (come on, you can't call them sports cars). It basically holds the car in place while you build up the RPMs, enabling you to shoot off the line at outrageous speeds (or spin out into the nearest abutment).

Wisdom questioned

Many people have expressed concern over FCA's sanity, questioning the wisdom of putting such a potentially destructive weapon into the hands of America's drivers.

It now appears that the doubters include some of FCA's legal team. Enthusiast site Allpar.com this week reported that purchasers of the Demon will be required to sign a notarized form saying that they agree not to drive the car with the racing slicks in wet weather, or when the temperature is below 15 degrees.

Slicks -- or "drag radials" as they're being called -- don't have any tread to speak off. Ergo, not much traction. Thus the warnings against driving on wet or slipper streets.

The potential for self-destruction remains high, however, even on dry pavement. Some critics have suggested that the launch control include a two-minute delay so that charged-up drivers don't pop into it everytime they see a Corvette or Porsche 911 stopped beside them at a light.

Fiat Chrysler diesels nearly as dirty as VWs, researchers report

A Ram 1550 pickup

Volkswagen's good name has been forever stained by the acrid clouds of infamy that grew out of its dirty diesel scandal. But the West Virginia University researchers who first blew the whistle on VW say Fiat Chrysler diesels are nearly as bad.

The U.S. Justice Department sued Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) last month, saying it was using "defeat device" software similar to that used by VW to cheat on emission tests.

Now, in a Bloomberg report, the West Virginia University’s Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions is adding some detail to the allegations. The WVU researchers aren't accusing FCA of intentionally cheating, but they say that on-road tests of Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs and Ram 1500 pickups revealed nitrogen oxide levels at 3 to 20 times the legal limit. Nitrogen oxide, or NOx, can cause smog and acid rain.

"We saw emissions results in simulated on-road cycles on chassis dynamometers that were much lower than the actual on-road results were, suggesting that the vehicle was controlled in different fashions," said Daniel Carder, director of the center, according to Bloomberg.

FCA didn't comment on the allegations but suggested that the university was being paid by a law firm that is preparing a lawsuit against the company.

Similar accusations have been leveled against General Motors, which has denied them.

Regardless of how the FCA case is resolved, the continuing allegations about supposedly "clean" diesels are raising questions about whether U.S. consumers will ever accept diesels in cars and small trucks.

VWs forever

Meanwhile, in Brainerd, Minnesota, residents are greeted each day with a former paper mill lot jammed with Volkswagens, thousands of them. Previously known as the home of mythical lumberman Paul Bunyan, Brainerd now is the temporary (or so the locals hope) home of endless rows of recalled VWs that are awaiting repairs and a possible return to America's roadways.

VW is still negotiating with federal and state regulators, trying to find a fix for the cars that it bought back from consumers. If a fix is finally agreed to, the cars will be modified and will likely find their way onto used car lots.

But until then, they've made Brainerd the VW capital of America. Residents say it's not too bad now but as the cars age, they'll become an eyesore.

"I can only hope that they resolve or figure out what they're going to do with these cars sooner than later," Julie Kletscher told Minnesota Public Radio. "Because I can't imagine what that's going to look like in 10 years if it sits there that long. We'll have ourselves an old junk shop across the road."

Feds, states probing emission allegations against Fiat Chrysler

Federal agencies are investigating whether Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) diesel-powered vehicles may emit excessive emissions, the company revealed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday.

The company said in the filing that it has "received various inquiries, subpoenas and requests for information from a number of governmental authorities, including the U.S. Department of Justice, the SEC and several states’ attorneys general. We are investigating these matters and we intend to cooperate with all valid governmental requests."

On Jan. 12, the company had said the Justice Department was investigating the matter, but FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne called allegations that FCA might be using software defeat devices similar to those used by Volkswagen "unadulterated hogwash," according to an Automotive News report.

Volkswagen has agreed to pay $4.3 billion in fines to various U.S. agencies as well as conducting a recall and buyback program that is expected to push the total cost in the U.S. and Canada beyond $23 billion.

No wrongdoing

Marchionne said there has been no wrongdoing and the company has never tried to create software that would cheat emissions tests by reducing emissions when it senses that the vehicle is in test mode.

The company conceded in January that the Justice Department was looking into the allegations, reportedly after getting a referral from the Environmental Protection Agency in July. But the involvement of the SEC and the state attorneys general has not previously been disclosed.

In January, the EPA said the maximum possible fine against FCA could be $4.6 billion.

Class action charges Dodge RAM diesel emissions are excessive

A class action lawsuit charges that FCA (Chrysler) and diesel engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. deceived consumers and regulators by concealing the high levels of diesel emissions produced by 2500 and 3500 Dodge RAM diesel trucks.

“The sheer level of fraud and concealment between Chrysler and Cummins is unconscionable, and we believe we have uncovered a deeply entrenched scheme,” said Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman, the law firm representing truck owners. “Chrysler and Cummins spent years lying through their teeth and making empty promises to deliver the cleanest trucks on the market – lip service to deceptively dominate what they saw as a profitable market.”

The lawsuit charges that the companies intentionally misled truck buyers about the emission levels of the trucks, knowingly profiting from the allegedly dirty diesels and fraudulently getting emissions credits from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that it then used to produce more high-polluting vehicles.

According to the report, the affected Cummins diesel engines conceal true emissions output, causing the catalytic converter to wear out more quickly, resulting in the vehicle burning fuel at a higher rate, and often requiring customers to replace the converter after the warranty has expired at a cost of approximately $3,000-$5,000.

Affected models

Affected Vehicles include the following models that are equipped with Cummins diesel engines: 2007-2010 Dodge RAM 2500 (2WD, 4WD), 2011-2012 Dodge RAM 2500 (non-SCR systems, 2WD, 4WD), 2007-2010 Dodge RAM 3500 (2WD, 4WD) and 2011-2012 Dodge RAM 3500 (non-SCR systems, 2WD, 4WD).

“The two companies touted value to consumers in their marketing,” Berman added. “Was it valuable to consumers to force them to pay $3,000 to $5,000 for needless repairs of worn-out parts? Did it give consumers value to publicly lie to sell hundreds of thousands of noncompliant, polluting vehicles?”

The lawsuit, filed Nov. 14, 2016, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan seeks reimbursement for a proposed nationwide class of consumers who purchased the affected trucks, as well as putative damages for the defendants’ unlawful behavior, according to the suit.

The DPF

The issue centers around the sophisticaed nitrogen oxide (NOx) adsorber technology used in the RAM trucks with 6.7-liter diesel engines, which Chrysler and Cummins developed to meet new EPA emissions standards announced in 2001.

In order to produce a diesel engine that had desirable power and fuel economy, yet emissions levels low enough to meet government standards, Chrysler and Cummins developed the 6.7-liter diesel engine with sophisticated NOx adsorber technology.

The primary emission control after-treatment technologies include a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a NOx adsorber catalyst system to capture and reduce NOx into less harmful substances, such as nitrogen and oxygen.

But the lawsuit alleges that testing shows the catalysts are not durable and do not meet emission standards. Furthermore, injection of fuel to regenerate the DPF occurs with excessive frequency. NOx emissions during these regeneration events are nearly 10 times the emission standards, according to the lawsuit.

The legal limit of NOx emissions for stop-and-go driving is 200 mg/mile. When tested, Dodge RAM 2500s emitted 702 mg/mile on average, and 2,826 mg/mile at maximum emissions, the suit states.
