Medical Guardian alert systems

How Medical Guardian works

Medical Guardian alert systems are designed for at-home or on-the-go use. With either type of system, when you press the medical alert button, you’re connected to a 24/7 medical monitoring center. According to Medical Guardian, it typically takes around 8 to 10 seconds for the monitoring center to respond.

Once connected to an operator, you’ll describe your situation. The operator will then get you the help you need, whether that means sending an ambulance or contacting people you know for non-emergency support.

If the operator can’t confirm your safety after the alert is activated — for example, if you’ve had a stroke and can’t speak — emergency medical services are automatically dispatched to your location.

Medical Guardian products

Medical Guardian offers two home-based systems and three mobile systems. All of its mobile systems include free AT&T or Verizon network connectivity.

Medical Guardian costs

Medical Guardian offers a tiered pricing structure. You can pay monthly, quarterly or annually for your system. Consumers who sign up for an annual plan will have more monthly cost savings than those who sign up for a quarterly or monthly plan.

You’ll also need to pay for the equipment you choose, and there’s currently no option to lease equipment. The company doesn’t charge an activation fee, and shipping costs $12.50.

Add-on services and equipment costs

You can also add services or equipment to your package:

  • Fall detection: For $10 per month, you can get a water-resistant fall detection button that’s worn around the neck or add fall detection to a mobile system.
  • Voice-activated wall button: For $4.99 per month, you can get a device that automatically calls the monitoring center if you say "Help me” twice within 500 feet of the base unit. It’s water-resistant, making it ideal for bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Wireless wall button: For $2.99 per month, you can get a wireless and water-resistant button that’s activated by touch. It’s easy to install and works within 500 feet of the base unit.
  • Black or white pendant: For $2.99 per month, you can get a water-resistant help button to pair with your base device.
  • Protection plan: For $6.99 per month, you can get a protection plan that covers one device or two help buttons per year in the event of damage, loss or theft.
  • Lockbox: For $2.99 per month, you can purchase a house key lockbox, which allows emergency services to access your home via a four-digit code you set.
  • OnGuard Alerts: For $2.99 per month, this add-on option keeps the people in your Care Circle updated with real-time alerts during emergencies.

Note that not all services or equipment are available with all products. For example, the wall buttons and fall detection pendants are only available with home-based systems and the MGMini.

Still have questions?

Is Medical Guardian worth it?

Medical Guardian alert systems can be worth it for people who have a critical medical condition, have a high risk of falling or are in recovery from a significant health event. It has a wide range of equipment options, including in-home, mobile and smartwatch devices. All devices are monitored and can connect you to a dispatch center that can get you the help you need 24/7.

However, some customers on our site have complained about the company’s cancellation and refund policies. For example, Medical Guardian states on its FAQ page that it requires a three-month minimum contract for service.

Alisa, a reviewer from Missouri, said: “I called [...] to turn off the service to the device. They refunded me part of what they charged me. I checked today and they had gone back to charging me and said they had a new policy that stated they could only turn off the service for 3 months and then return to charging us again. This was not what I was told when we bought the device. [...] I had also requested that they not do auto-pay. That was ignored as well.”

Also, Medical Guardian doesn’t offer refunds for purchased or leased devices.

“We used Medical Guardian several years ago when mom had surgery and we wanted some extra security for her,” said LuAnn, a reviewer from Pennsylvania. “Sadly, the device never worked, out of the box it just showed error codes. [...] So we called to cancel the service and return the device for a refund. They said they would send a box. Two weeks later…[no] box, and only a refund for the service and not the device. After another call to customer service we were told they NEVER give a refund for the purchased device.”

I actually wear the device all the time, except when charging). I feel especially safe when taking a shower and in bed. (I get up for sleepily. For bathroom breaks and it is comforting to know I just need to push a button.) I have found that the charge lasts somewhat varying times. The shortest was 74 hours and the longest 88. Usually around 82. (Temperature, humify or whatever might make a difference.) I endeavor to charge mine during the day and then my backup (while charging) is my cell phone). I also consider charging up early if getting on to close to the 3rd day (72 hours) and I may be away from my charger (at dinner. Movies, etc, and it is not practical to bring a charger). I am satisfied.

This device has allowed emergency services to respond to her immediately and I love the fact that I get a call and I am notified so I can respond immediately. Thank you all so very much. I'm a widow living alone, but younger than most I know. A friend strongly encouraged me to get a service to help should I have any medical issues while alone - following a medical emergency. A few weeks ago I fell due to dizziness so I needed help but not an ambulance. The button registered my fall but I canceled it thinking I didn't want an ambulance, just a friend's help. I pushed the button and asked them to call one of my emergency contacts. They kept me on hold while they called and then told me my friends was on the way. I was nowhere near my phone so this was a godsend. I'm so glad I can use it for both big and more minor issues!

Medical Guardian Failed When We Needed It Most. We purchased a Medical Guardian system to protect my very unsteady 90-year-old mother living alone, so that, if she experienced a fall while alone, help could be summoned immediately. The entire reason we invested in this service was for the peace of mind that it would work in an emergency.

Unfortunately, during an actual fall that I personally witnessed while my mother was wearing the device, it did not perform as expected. Had I not been present, I genuinely don't know what the outcome would have been. After that incident, we performed several additional tests, and the system again failed to perform reliably. At that point, we completely lost confidence in depending on this device for my mother's safety. A medical alert system is a life-safety product. If it fails when it is needed most, trust cannot simply be restored by replacing the device or continuing the service.

When I contacted Medical Guardian, I requested a full refund because we were ending the service due to our loss of confidence after experiencing what we believed was a failure during an actual emergency—not because we changed our minds or no longer needed the service. Instead, our request was treated as a routine cancellation, and we were given the run around saying we would be called and were not. We had to make the call after an appropriate number of days waiting patiently.

We paid for a full year of reliable emergency protection in good faith. The fact that this emergency occurred months after we purchased the service should not diminish the company's responsibility when the reason for cancellation is that the product no longer inspires confidence after an actual emergency and subsequent testing. I encourage anyone considering a medical alert system to thoroughly test it under realistic conditions and to fully understand how emergency calls are handled before relying on it to protect a loved one. I hope Medical Guardian will reconsider its position and provide a full refund in light of the circumstances. PS The below "recommend to your family & friends" button is not engaged for consumers to choose.

This has been one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had. I purchased two Medical Guardian devices through Costco last year—one for my father and one for my mother, at two different addresses. Activation was a nightmare because the accounts kept linking together, even after multiple calls for help. My father passed away in November 2025, and I even have a cancellation email from Medical Guardian. Despite that, they continued charging me. It later turned out that when they sent replacement devices, they created a second account for my father instead of properly resolving the original issue. As a result, I was being charged twice for my mother’s device and also still charged for my father’s account.

I was overcharged by a significant amount, and I should have monitored my statements more closely. What makes this worse is that they make cancellation extremely difficult, and even when you call, it still doesn’t seem to get resolved. This feels like a company that makes it easy to sign up and nearly impossible to leave.

When I acquired Medical Guardian for my mom, they made it EXTREMELY easy. The sales consultant, Summer was great! She explained everything and I could understand her. My mom passed away and now I’m trying to cancel the service. I still had Summer’s direct line phone number. She answered and was very friendly. But to cancel service you have to talk to the Retention department. Summer transferred me and after holding for 10 minutes, I hung up and called back. I wanted to make sure I was calling during their normal hours. Someone else picked up the sales line immediately. They confirmed the retention department is open. I started this process at 8:00 a.m. apparently, right when they opened. The automated system wanted to know why I was cancelling. I stated “My mom passed away”. The automated system offered their condolences. SMH.

At the time of writing this review, I am still on hold and have spent 47 minutes on hold. I’m being told my call is important to them. They have a system sophisticated enough to offer condolences, but I’m dealing with a corporation who knows it’s more profitable to have sales reps available, but not considerate enough to have reps available to handle clients who are dealing with cancellations, during a sad time.

This was not what I was told when we bought the device. They said there was no issue with suspending the service and reactivating for only the time it was needed. DO NOT trust Medical Alert Systems with your loved one’s safety. Our 91-year-old father fell and pressed his medical alert button for immediate help. Someone answered but did absolutely nothing. No help was sent. No follow-up. He was left alone on the floor for nearly two hours. The only reason he got help is because he somehow found the strength to reach a nearby phone and called a family member. We then contacted the Boston Fire Department, who responded right away and helped him (God bless them!!!). The system we were paying for completely failed him.

After the incident, we tested the device ourselves to confirm functionality. During this test, we were connected to a representative who disconnected the call without providing assistance. This situation represents a critical breakdown in a service that is explicitly marketed as lifesaving, yet it completely failed when it mattered most. That is not just poor customer service, it’s dangerous. We canceled immediately and would strongly warn others not to rely on this company for the safety of a loved one. Do your research and don’t blindly trust the “top-rated” lists. Our experience was the opposite of what those suggest.

Sadly, the device never worked, out of the box it just showed error codes. But also it was very slow to arrive, and showed up with no instructions. You needed to dive into their website to learn that you supposedly just needed to push the test button and everything would be set up. Sadly, that just showed error, so we needed to spend hours on the phone getting through their device support team, who were supposedly trying different fixes. It never worked.

So we called to cancel the service and return the device for a refund. They said they would send a box. Two weeks later...not box, and only a refund for the service and not the device. After another call to customer service we were told they NEVER give a refund for the purchased device. I have currently been shuffled to their billing department, and have been asked to call back in a few days. So, I have opened a claim with my credit card company. I would steer clear of Medical Guardian right now. They are not what they used to be.

We were very satisfied. At this time, we wish to cancel the service because as of March 1, she moved into an assisted living facility and no longer needs this help. How do I do this? Sincerely, Kathleen **

At first, I was reluctant to get an alert system, but this is so easy to use and reliable. I'm sorry I didn't get it earlier. The wristband looked heavy and awkward but is light as a feather, and you don't notice it at all. If something happens their on the line within minutes, putting you in contact with help.

I have contracted with Medical Guardian for many years and have found their service to be outstanding. The only thing that is absolutely maddening about them is their incompetent billing department!!!! I go through this every year - multiple concerned calls from them despite the fact that I have called in payment BUT IT IS NEVER NOTED NOR DEDUCTED BY THEIR COMPANY! This year FOUR TELEPHONE CALLS AND STILL NO RECORD OF PAYMENT. I live in fear that the service will be disconnected when it is my only form of getting helping should an emergency occur. I am seriously considering dropping them in the future because they just can't seem to process my payments. Dealing with this billing problem is so time consuming and totally FRUSTRATING.

Great service anytime I have a question or issue with my device. My rep was extremely polite, very knowledgeable, and forwarded me to the correct department. This is a must have device for senior citizens, or anyone. It’s affordable and legit. I recommend them highly.

The first thing Medical Guardian needs to do is to tell you to call their customer support number first for assistance setting the device up. The device works great, but the administrative end of their business stinks. It took five calls for them to finally get my phone number correct and to realize I had an account using the auto answer. The app for the device was not easy to set up. Make sure to have your account number available. Every time you log in you need to put in your user name and passcode. I wish the app would just remember the username and passcode. The app counts calories and steps.

It took 20 minutes for the representative to understand where my key box was located. It took 4 tries for her to get the code to my key box correct. The representative was nice, but just could not remember numbers. I bought the mini wrist device. It is lightweight and comfortable. The band is a little too wide at the end to put into latch. I'm getting used to it. All the representatives are friendly. The response time is quick. It took me five days to get everything perfect between the device and the app. I'm finally done and feel safe. My order number is **.

I like the security Medical Guardian gives. I'm often alone and subject to falling. I need the protection this device gives in case of a fall. That, plus in the case of any other medical emergency. It is easy to charge and works well as a watch. I like the pedometer included. The device is not bulky and quite attractive.

Customer service has just one from live to AI support. The watch is a piece of JUNK. They have replaced the watch 3 times. It self disconnects multiple times from the cradle and says charging. It does this even when charge is at 100% Have to wait for call back from their IT department 24-48 hours. Am ready to cancel contract.

No one in customer service can verify when I will receive my order. They just keep saying 7 to 10 days. No answer as of this date. It has been more than enough days and product should have been delivered by now.

The device and emergency notification works well. Customer service sucks! You cannot contact a live person on weekends or holidays or in the evening. For a device of this type customer service should be available 24/7/365!

We signed up with Medical Guardian for my 89 year old mother. She has fallen more than 6 times with no response from MG. After the first year we received a bill for double the annual fee of the first year. What a scam! I am horrified that a company would take advantage of our elderly population. We put a great deal of trust in the fact that our mother was safe only to find it doesn't work. We cancelled the service and are returning the device. I certainly hope we don't encounter the difficulty with cancellation expressed by other reviewers.

This company has been harassing me since October of 2025 when I called to cancel my account. The credit card they were billing was closed, so they have the audacity to find access to my other credit cards so they can continue billing. Initially, there was no written communication because they will only give you a phone #. When you call, the minimum wait time is 15 minutes; when you finally connect, they hang up on you. I have sent them numerous cancellation notices via email which they totally ignore....finally was able to write after they actually sent me an email. They are committing fraud; taking advantage of old people so they make a huge profit. They are crooks.

From my initial phone call to receiving the product, set up and my parents daily use, Medical Guardian has been outstanding to work with. Each encounter has been positive. The Medical Guardian is staff have been great to work with answering all questions, assisting with any issues or questions we’ve had. Response to alarms has been a positive experience as well.

The Medical Guardian alarm bracelet/wrist monitor has given us peace of mind and allowed my parent to remain independent. The only issue we’ve had is the band - we wish Medical Guardian would design a soft, cloth, washable stretch band. At 87 my parents skin is thin and while the band hasn’t damaged the skin it occasionally gets irritated. A minor problem when compared to the benefits. The alarm allows my parent to be mobile and independent and allows me to have peace of mind. With the phone app I am able to see where my parent is, how active she’s been and if she’s had any falls/alarms. Such a relief!
