LegalZoom FAQ

Are LegalZoom documents legal?

Yes, LegalZoom’s legal forms and document templates are drafted by licensed attorneys and reviewed regularly to ensure they comply with federal and state laws.

Can I get a refund from LegalZoom?

Yes, LegalZoom offers refunds for most products within 60 days of purchase, as long as your documents haven’t been submitted to a government agency or completed and made available for download.

Subscriptions, including LegalZoom’s personal and business legal plans, come with a 30-day refund window unless a consultation or other covered service has already taken place. Filing fees and third-party processing charges are nonrefundable.

Will LegalZoom hold up in court?

Yes, in general, LegalZoom documents are drafted by experienced attorneys and are designed to comply with federal and state laws.

But depending on the type of document you create, you may have to take additional steps to make your document legally valid. This might include signing in front of a witness, getting it notarized or transferring assets. These requirements vary by document type and state.

Why is LegalZoom so expensive?

LegalZoom’s prices aren’t necessarily expensive compared to the market rate. On average, attorneys and legal professionals charge an hourly rate between $100 and $400.

Instead of charging per hour, LegalZoom uses a flat fee structure to provide small businesses and individuals with affordable legal services. Most packages and services also have state or federal filing fees, which are required by law.

I was looking for a power of attorney and a medical power of attorney, and I looked up LegalZoom on the internet. My experience was very pleasant. Getting set up was very simple and quick. There were no promises of anything they didn’t deliver and they were very professional. I was quite happy with the paperwork I got back. It had a lot more detail than I expected. I had looked at two different options and one was about $10 higher and the other was double. What LegalZoom offered and provided far exceeded what the other two offered, so the price point is spot on. I have recommended LegalZoom to several people already. I've still got all their paperwork. So anybody who asks, that's where I’ll send them.

I needed a will. I saw the commercial for LegalZoom and I figured I really didn't want to go to a lawyer. I'd rather do it myself and have it be a little more personal than hiring a lawyer to go through it. With LegalZoom, you had to fill out all your information, name, date, birth date, address, and who the beneficiaries were. I had some issues when I had to go back in their website and make a change to my will. I couldn't get to my will because it was locked and it wouldn't let me make edits to make changes. I had to call there and somebody made the changes for me and sent me a copy. After that, when I had to make changes, I was able to go in and make the changes. So, I got the will done and and it took about an hour to complete.

I feel protected having LegalZoom and from what I heard on the news, wills have been contested and they stood up in court with LegalZoom. So, that's a positive for me. I was a little worried about that, if it would be legally bound, but apparently it is. The cost was reasonable as well and the people who helped me were nice. Overall, I'm very happy.

I logged in to LegalZoom and registered, and I saw that it was very easy to use. It didn't seem it would be too confusing to me. Legalities and different states can make things scary. I did one new thing which is a living will, and one updating thing that was from 10 years ago. It's affordable, and it was simple to follow templates and their prompts. I was pleased to see that the website had everything that I had done. Even though it was years before, it was still in the records. I was able to see that, and figure out what I wanted to update. I was glad that I didn't have to start over, even though I may have made a lot of changes. It was fast to just see the original and make modifications. One of the benefits is you can have it download immediately and/or have a nice hard copy sent. It's a very useful website.

So far, I've formed four businesses and I'm using a trademark service and I'm using the DBA service of LegalZoom. They have a registered agent that I'm paying for. It seems like everything else has been smooth. The only problem I'm having with LegalZoom is that I'm still confused. I thought that they would help me with my business licenses, but they just put this broad spectrum of stuff, whether it applies to me or not. That's the only thing I don't like. And having the attorney.

I also got a bare minimum discount. First, I did the business, the corporation. Once I did the corporation, I had four DBAs at $300 apiece. Then, I did the trademark, which was 900, then I had to come up with 700. So total, I didn't spend a lot of money, but I felt like I didn't get a good discount. But other than that, forming my business and everything else, I liked it. I just know it's expensive.

LegalZoom's marketing put a marker in my mind until I needed services that they provide. The only service I've ever used of theirs was facilitating an LLC. I didn't know much about forming an LLC, and I wanted to take the easy route this time. They provided a checklist and a list of things to be aware of and be mindful of. They were like, "Oh, by the way, we can help you with this. Here's some references where to go to manage this outside of something that the LegalZoom could do for you.” They gave me insight and reference.

I've had very few interactions with the representatives at LegalZoom, but each time, it's been very straightforward, professional, and helpful. They focus on my need at hand and provide guidance that's relevant, and they do not use it as an opportunity for upsell. They do send me notifications periodically about compliance, and they want me to work through them to ensure that I am in compliance. This is fine. I could easily select unsubscribe to those communications. I don't really have any feelings about it either way, but I could see how someone could easily be annoyed by it. Maybe it is a little bit overcommunicated. I might see that as a little much. Someone else might see it as not enough. The point there is they're communicative, and they want you to succeed.

One of the things that they did inform me was a significant number of LLCs do fail within their first year or two, and it's usually as it relates to compliance. Perhaps, you didn't do your taxes on time, or you didn't renew this, and there's just steep penalties and fees that could sink a pre-revenue generating business. So, their cautionary approach was appreciated. There were some times where I found myself in a bit of a panic, but I already had an accountant that helped me realize that I don't need to worry. Their understanding of my business obviously stops with the business I've done with them, so they don't really know what else I've done. Maybe the messaging is not fully tailored to my needs, but I can't blame that on them, because they don't know everything about my business. LegalZoom is certainly more pricey than the alternative of going out and doing it on your own, but for the sheer easiness factor, worth it.

Updated on 06/06/2026: Will see if it works. They finally contacted me and so far so good. We will see.

Original Review: I paid the $999 fee to apply for a patent for a new invention, and all went well till I got to the point of filling out the application, which is when the roof fell. I started to complete the form, but had to leave for short time and when I came back, the system had not saved my work, so I asked LegalZoom to let me know what I had done wrong. Instead LegalZoom changed the application format and sent me file folder that I should "download" to complete the application, but when I tried to download this new app, it showed up in Chinese characters and it made no sense? So, I have tried to contact LegalZoom to change it back to the original format but they have gone silent, so I now have nothing for my $999 I paid them. I need this patent because I have a buyer for my invention, but I am out $999 if Legal Zoom does not get back to me. Note, I have worked with these people before, but it was much easier back in 2020 when I used their services.

I would strongly encourage potential customers to look elsewhere before using LegalZoom. My experience has been frustrating, expensive, and full of what feels like deliberate obstacles designed to make it difficult for customers to cancel services, remove payment methods, or obtain refunds. First, LegalZoom is extremely expensive for what is actually provided. When I requested a refund, I was given conflicting explanations. I was initially told that because more than 30 days had passed, I was not eligible for a refund. Then I was told that because I had spoken with an intake representative, I was also not eligible for a refund. Which is it? Is the policy based on a 30-day deadline, or is it based on speaking with an intake representative? Customers should not be given different answers depending on who they speak with.

What makes this even more unreasonable is that no legal documents were ever filed on my behalf, and I never actually spoke with an attorney. The only interaction I had was with an intake person whose role was simply to collect information and set up the process. Yet somehow that minimal interaction was used as justification for keeping my money. The payment practices were equally concerning. After previously purchasing a trademark through LegalZoom, they simply continued using the credit cards they had on file. At no point did I intend for every card previously used to remain available for future charges. When I attempted to remove those cards from my account, there was no simple option to do so myself. Instead, I was forced to call customer service and jump through unnecessary hoops just to have payment methods removed.

The same thing happened when I attempted to stop charges related to a more recent trademark matter. The timing was remarkable. The moment I was trying to cancel and prevent further charges, customer service suddenly became difficult to reach. I sat on hold for more than 30 minutes, only for the call to mysteriously disconnect. Whether intentional or not, it certainly felt like the system worked far better when they wanted to take my money than when I wanted to stop them from taking it.

The overall experience left me feeling trapped. Between the hidden fees, the inability to easily remove payment methods, the conflicting refund explanations, the lack of meaningful legal services, and the obstacles encountered when attempting to cancel, the entire process felt designed to benefit the company while leaving customers with very little recourse. Consumers deserve transparency, consistent policies, and the ability to control their own payment information. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend researching other trademark and legal service providers before giving LegalZoom your business.

I’ve used LegalZoom for about 5 years, and honestly the experience has become incredibly frustrating. The website is not user-friendly or efficient. I specifically paid for access to older files and documents, but trying to figure out what files are what is nearly impossible. The organization and navigation are confusing, and finding important documents shouldn’t feel like solving a puzzle.

Recently, my husband and I started creating a trust through LegalZoom after getting married. During the process, I repeatedly selected “Do Not Print” because I always print my own documents when I’m ready. We also never even finished the process because there was still a lot we needed to review and decide. Despite that, LegalZoom mailed us a huge printed book of unfinished trust documents that we never requested. It was a waste of paper, a waste of shipping, and completely ignored the options we selected during setup. Since the trust wasn’t finalized, the book ended up in the trash. Another major disappointment: they don’t even offer a simple codicil form for updating a will. For a company centered around legal documents and estate planning, that seems like a pretty basic thing to provide. After years as a customer, I expected a much smoother and more organized experience.

I used LegalZoom to help form an LLC and unfortunately had a frustrating experience from start to finish. The process took significantly longer than advertised, and there was very little proactive communication regarding the status of my filing. Whenever I contacted customer support, I received inconsistent answers depending on who I spoke with. The pricing structure was also misleading. What initially appeared to be a straightforward service quickly became much more expensive due to additional fees and upsells that were not clearly explained upfront. The original pricing to be our registered agent and service processor went from a couple of hundred dollars to $499 without notice and giving us time to file an alternative company and solution. For a company that markets itself as simplifying legal services, the experience was unnecessarily complicated.

Most disappointing was the lack of accountability when issues came up. Instead of resolving concerns efficiently, I felt like I was being passed between departments without clear solutions. Based on my experience, I would recommend looking into alternative registered agent and business formation services before using LegalZoom. I wholeheartedly recommend NO ONE do business with LegalZoom. If you do you will regret it!!

I had a good experience with LegalZoom. They're good, but at the same time, before I paid the money to get started, they didn't tell me a bunch of stuff. For instance, I had to do income tax right away. I owe the IRS money from 2024. I had to put a hold on 2025. They don't tell you everything until you sign. Until you give them the money, then they'll be like, “Oh, by the way...” They could’ve told me, “Oh, you know you might wanna wait.” I know they just want money, but I should’ve just waited longer. They could have done better communication. The guy was a good salesman. The pitch he gave me was really good. I thought they would take care of me for everything, but they don't. So, I was mad about that, too.

I've been working with them since December 1st of last year, and that was when I became a business owner. I should’ve waited longer because now, I have to pay $800 to do my taxes through them. They didn't tell me that when I signed up. I thought I had to make money in order for me to do my taxes. This makes no sense. Other than that, I got my LLC on December 1st, my EIN and everything's done. They were really professional and they know their business. They just don't tell you everything until you pay.

Everything was easy and seamless. They were great and I love them. I call them and they pick up the phone and answer all my questions. Or whenever I need anything, I call them and they will guide me right away on what I need to do. So, I'm very happy with it. I'm gonna open a few more LLCs this year, and it's going to be through them.

I have extensive experience with LegalZoom. I have a company that is approved in operation by the Secretary of State. I have all of the necessary reports and everything that I needed, and the Secretary of State has approved it all. LegalZoom is my registered agent here in California. I have a business in Wyoming also that I have a Wyoming agent. He wanted close to $2,000 to put together my California business, but LegalZoom was just a few hundred dollars. So, I went with LegalZoom, and they dealt with California.

Just like most anybody nowadays, there are issues about their eagerness to serve. There are numerous people who are working and some of them are the good guys, and some are the bad guys. The bad guys push around and try to get you to spend more money, which is a capitalist behavior, and we do live in a capitalist country. But I stay on top of my business so that when somebody tells me I need something, I check it out to see if I do, and I found that I didn't. But all of their errors was on the helpful side to ensure that I wouldn't be left in a situation that I could be censured by the Secretary of State for my business. They desired to provide services that I didn't need. That company could have because they are services for people establishing companies.

They check easy when I tell them, “No, thank you.” The last communications I received with them, although they were counseling me still, referring me to accountants and whatnot to help me with my taxes, and I had already taken care of all that myself, and I let them know. But each time I talked to one of their people, it was a different person I talked to. It's understandable why they might not have known that I had done that. Other than that, they were good for me. They kept me on my toes.

      Original Review: April 8, 2026

Updated on 04/09/2026: LegalZoom’s Executive Escalation Specialist Joey responded. He pointed out that a compliance notification was sent on February 8, 2026. However, my main concern has never been the early notification. It remains what happened after I placed the Annual Report order on the actual due date of March 1, 2026. I emailed them the required information on March 2 and again on March 31, specifically asking if email was sufficient. I received no response to either email. Only after I initiated a chat was the information finally processed. This is exactly why the late fees were incurred.

They offered no waiver, credit, or goodwill adjustment on the $443 late penalty and interest. They simply told me to pay the remaining balance. I am proceeding with the $443 payment to restore good standing for IGNIFY Incorporated. However, even the payment process was frustrating and not user-friendly! The option to pay was not obvious on the dashboard. I had to chat with them again just to receive a payment link. Even after entering my credit card information, the status still showed “Need Action” with only a “Contact us” button, and I had to chat with an associate again to confirm the payment went through.

On a positive note, LegalZoom promised the Limited Scope Agreement for my Attorney-Led Trademark Registration. Once they fully deliver on that promise, I will update this review again with the outcome. However, based on this entire experience, I have decided I cannot remain a LegalZoom customer or recommend them to others. The whole process gave the impression of “we told you, you didn’t get it or do it? Too bad.” I'm seeing the word "scam" float a lot in the reviews, I wouldn't call them scam, just incompetent.

Original Review: I turned to LegalZoom as a non-expert, expecting professional guidance to keep my company in good standing. Instead, after spending over $3,000 across multiple orders (including Express Gold Corporation #** and Attorney-Led Trademark Registration #**), I have been met with total negligence. I followed LegalZoom’s internal prompts to file my Delaware Annual Report and Tax well before the deadline. Despite paying for their service, LegalZoom failed to review the information for accuracy and simply filed it incorrectly. This lack of oversight resulted in over $400 in late fees and caused my company to lose its status of "Good Standing." Now, LegalZoom is demanding even more money to fix the mess they created.

Furthermore, I paid over $800 for an Attorney-Led Trademark. Because their communications are obscure and frequently flagged as spam, I missed a follow-up. Rather than a courtesy check-in or a proactive notification, LegalZoom allowed the application to expire. Their solution? Telling me to pay the full amount to start over. LegalZoom sells the peace of mind that comes with "Legal" in their name, but in practice, they provide no actual service or protection. Their support is uninformed, their communication is poor, and their lack of accountability has actively harmed my business.

Don't waste your time with these guys. They will not offer you proper business advice. Very careless. Just take your money. When you point out the money back guarantee they want to argue. I wanted to have an LLC for my grooming business. My HOA does not allow us to post our home address for an llc. LegalZoom posted my information with my home address on my LLC anyway. When I told them that can't be possible because I risk being sued by my HOA they instead of having any sort of intelligence towards what I'm trying to say told me that I have to have a physical address for my llc. I don't know what that has to do with me worrying about the HOA but okay? The business contact that I was talking to when out of town and did not refer me to another person so I thought my business contact just posted me while I'm freaking out.

I purchased a amendment to get it fixed because LegalZoom told me that would erase my address. They then told me it would never really erase my address and that I can't have full transparency. I'm not sure why they're making these choices on my behalf and then not correcting them when I'm telling them that it's wrong especially when I did it 2 hours after it was posted live. At this point I then pay money to then have my LLC dissolved. I then stopped whatever I personally could from being charged. I let customer care know that I don't want to be a customer of theirs anymore and that I have alerted them of every single problem in there guarantee window. I am still being charged for their stuff 2 months later. I had to open up a dispute with my Capital One credit card so that they could go in and get all of my money back because LegalZoom has not given me a single product that is actually useful that they did not mess up.

If you still read this and want to go with them, I advise you to get every single thing that you talk to them about in writing because phone calls go absolutely nowhere., I have shots for a customer care person told me that I would not be getting charged for any more subscriptions just to be charged by subscriptions a few days later. Really looking forward to Capital One getting all of my money back for me but someone's.

Legal Zoom gave us a refund because we weren’t happy with the trust we had purchased.

      Original Review: April 6, 2026

Worthless. We purchased the living trust. It never shows you the documents. Only a questionnaire. We tried repeatedly for months and had to call customer service and spend hours on hold. Never got our documents. Can’t get a refund. Avoid like the plague it is.
