How does State Farm homeowners insurance work?

You can only purchase State Farm homeowners insurance through its network of independent agents. Once you receive a quote, you can choose from three broad tiers of coverage: Essential, Expanded or Premium. You can select add-ons, including flood insurance or earthquake coverage. Once you purchase State Farm homeowners insurance, you’re covered if your home is damaged due to natural disaster, theft or other covered incidents.

What does State Farm homeowners insurance cover?

The standard State Farm homeowners insurance plan provides multiple benefits, including:

  • Dwelling coverage protects the overall structure of your home, including floors, countertops and built-in appliances.
  • Dwelling extension covers structures that are detached from your primary property.
  • Personal liability coverage helps pay for legal fees and medical bills if you’re held responsible for someone being injured on your property.
  • Medical payments coverage helps take care of medical expenses for a guest injured on your property.
  • Loss-of-use coverage handles the cost of a hotel and other necessary expenses if you need to find alternative housing while your home is undergoing repairs.
  • Personal property coverage reimburses you for damaged personal items.

State Farm also has add-ons for those who need extra coverage. Flooding and earthquake coverage are two of the most commonly used add-ons. State Farm add-ons include:

  • Flood insurance provides coverage for natural flooding, which isn’t provided under standard homeowners insurance.
  • Earthquake coverage is not provided on typical homeowners insurance policies but can be added for an additional cost.
  • Full replacement cost covers the actual cost to rebuild your entire home.
  • Home systems protection helps replace several types of home systems, including water filtration systems, air conditioning systems and power generators.
  • Off-premises structures coverage lets you add structures you own that aren’t located on your primary home’s property to your policy.
  • Personal injury liability coverage helps pay for legal costs if someone is injured at your home and the injured party sues you.
  • Sump pump and drain backup covers water damage caused by a faulty sump pump or drain backup.
  • Service lines coverage provides financial protection if underground lines that belong to you need repair or replacement.
  • Umbrella coverage is an extra layer of coverage that protects your assets in a lawsuit. This is a helpful add-on for those with high net worth.
  • Identity theft coverage helps you pay legal fees if your identity is stolen.
  • Energy-efficient upgrade coverage helps pay for the cost if an appliance breaks and you replace it with a more energy-efficient version.
  • Mold coverage helps cover the costs of mold removal.

State Farm home insurance cost

Most policies with State Farm cost between $1,500 a year and $3,000 a year. That comes out to between $125 and $250 a month. More valuable homes typically have annual premiums of $4,000 a year or more. Important factors that affect the cost of your State Farm homeowners insurance include the level of coverage, the value of your home and where you live.

The best way to get a price on homeowners insurance is to request a quote through the State Farm website or to speak to a State Farm agent.

State Farm homeowners insurance discounts

You can benefit from a variety of discounts with State Farm that keep your policy more affordable.

  • Multipolicy discount: Combine your homeowners insurance policy with your State Farm auto insurance policy to save up to 20%.

State Farm homeowners insurance FAQ

What does State Farm homeowners insurance not cover?

Standard insurance from State Farm doesn’t cover damage caused by floods or earthquakes. These are two of the most common add-ons people purchase for their homeowners insurance policies, depending on where they live. They’re both worth considering if you think this type of damage is possible. Whatever is not explicitly listed as covered in your policy is not covered.

Does State Farm homeowners insurance cover foundation repair?

It depends. If a natural flood damages your foundation, then foundation repair won’t be covered unless you have purchased flood coverage.

How does State Farm pay homeowners claims?

State Farm can make payments into your bank account, send them in the mail or pay the repairer directly.

Does State Farm homeowners insurance cover water damage?

It depends on the source of the water damage. If the damage comes from a leaking appliance, it’s typically covered. If the cause of damage is a natural flood, you’re only covered if you have a flood damage add-on.

Is State Farm home insurance good?

State Farm offers good coverage for homes. The prices can be a bit high, but the convenient network of agents and multiple available discounts sweeten the deal. Several customers praised the company’s representatives for acting like members of the family when disaster struck.

State Farm auto and home insurance: Auto insurance since 1992; current cost=790/yr, Condo insurance since 2015; current cost= 546/yr, Apartment insurance for years prior to buying the condo. A lawyer told me State Farm is now one of the worst insurance companies. They have appeared in many news stories for dropping homeowner insurance policies using drones and absurd excuses. This makes me think my experience isn't uniquely bad.

I tried to make a claim because another owner beneath had water damage. I was on hold for 45 minutes and made the claim online while waiting. I waited for days for a call from a person whose job is to lie and generalize to convince me to withdraw my claim. I am dealing with a company who has lied to me constantly, but they said State Farm lied to them. Since they both seem to have a tenuous grasp on ethics, I'm not sure who to believe. When I finally talked to an agent who told me how to claim a reimbursement, I thought I had to process. I submitted via email, on their website, and by mail. I rarely received any response. When I was forced to repeat this lady seemed annoyed. (Lady annoyed does not begin to describe my mood right now.) They said they work with Servpro, which I thought meant that they were legit, far from it. They are coming after me and keep sending bogus illegal add on bills in fits.

If I ever get out of this financial jail (Servpro has my bank account at negative 30k if I could pay) I will find another insurance company. But once one insurance company screws you nobody else will even sniff your request. OUT OF POCKET AFTER REIMBURSEMENT: $47335.16-$9912.75 (State Farm paid) =$37422.41 (paid over reimbursement). Servpro charges:

    8/22: demand letter and packet containing mostly fraudulent charges. $5003.89 (8/22), $1709.97 (8/22) + $13184.81 (8/22) *+ $1749.66 (8/22) to return to check a leak I had to fix before they came out = $42317.46.

**+ $154.35 (8/22) to move 39 flat boxes and ½ bag of grey powder-2 hours, $21802.68 + *10000 (charged afterwards to submit documents to State Farm and the company’s pain and suffering”) + $5000 Paid as deposit (might be included in total?) = $36802.68 (Servpro total after 8/22/2024).

$8558.93 (paid) 2nd contractor to fix everything Servpro did, $1973.55 (paid)- Revised out of pocket: materials, fixtures, replacements = $47335.16 (inc. $445 for electrician to install new donated light and $234.61 not reimbursed hotel bill).

    RECEIVED FROM STATEFARM: $8252.21 + $1660.54 = $9912.75.

Was informed by State Farm via US Mail that my policy would not be up for renewal in February 2025 unless I replaced my roof. They say pictures from Google Earth suggest that I am losing gravel on my shingles. This roof was replaced in 2016 and has absolutely no issues. After a wind mitigation report and a report from a licensed roofer (the one that installed the roof in 2016) saying I should have 5 years of life left, they still say replace it or lose coverage. We are leaving State Farm who we have had for home and auto for 30 years with only 1 claim paid during all that time. No one should have to install a new roof every 9 or 10 years to pacify an insurance company.

This should be a negative five-star review. I battled State Farm for two years over a bad hail storm back in 2022. Fifteen houses in my area got new roofs from the same storm, and I was denied for two years. I was told by the State Farm representative that my roof did not sustain any damage, but they would replace ten shingles and it would match fine. Now, I receive disapproving looks from neighbors over the "match" State Farm claimed it would be. I have pictures of the roof to show people that State Farm does not care about their "neighbors" as they claim. I have been with State Farm for years, and for them to treat customers like this is appalling and unacceptable.

I feel finding other insurance may be in my best interest if this is how customers are treated for a claim that is due to mother nature. The color match of the shingles is not even close to being right. I feel like everyone should stay away from State Farm due to the poor work they do, thinking it is okay to mess with the resale value of customers' property. We pay our premiums to have good quality insurance coverage, and this is a testament showing State Farm does not care about quality, resale, or customers. I have more pictures too.

Our home was directly hit by a tornado in February. It is now early July and we still do not have repairs to our home, on our 3rd adjuster (first one I asked to be removed from our claim because she lied two times that we know of), and trying to get ahold of them is impossible and when you do, they do not send the information agreed upon on the call. They have closed our claim after sending a check for less than a thousand dollars for whole home siding replacement saying we should patch it, this goes against Ohio code Rule 3901-1-54(I)(1)(b). The claim is not closed. I’m not even sure what the point of paying your insurance premium is or what’s more unfortunate between getting hit by a tornado or having State Farm as my insurance provider.

I had severe damage to my rental property from a bad storm, there was damage to both bathrooms ceilings, and damage to to my living room ceiling. The State Farm adjuster chose to repair the damage to just one bathroom, he stated he wasn't going to cover my 2nd bathroom because he said it was caused from wear and tear, I sent him numerous pictures showing there was stains from the rain storm but he still chose not to cover the 2nd bathroom. I don't understand how they pick and chose what they want to cover, I probably should have gave just 1 star but they did cover my living room and one of the bathrooms.

I was with Statefarm for over 50 years. I noted a water leak in my bathroom. I called my Statefarm Agent Steve ** in Miami and was told the leak was not covered under my homeowner's policy due to wear & tear.. They didn't even offer to send an adjuster to evaluate my claim...I don't Recommend State Farm Insurance.

Home Insurance provider, State Farm, has unlawfully withheld benefits and coverages owed for a policy maintained since 1996. After catching and calling out the Adjuster for saying I didn’t have coverage when I did, he engaged in an 'investigation' that was completely senseless and what he claimed needed to be determined was wholly impossible. He delayed the Claims processing for months, and in the meantime, since I RECORDED calls where he was making multiple false claims, he issued a letter saying he wouldn’t speak with me on the phone anymore (this is after weeks of him calling daily to harass me).

I continued to request to speak with the Manager and have to this day to ask questions about why my Claim was being handled the way it was, where in the Policy (or Contract) it said they could perform these 'investigations' when it was clear this was a loss covered. Then, once their AFFILIATE was engaged to compile a report for more than what was reported, they agreed it was a covered loss but issued an Estimate for an amount that wouldn't even cover the cost to remove the damages, let alone restore the property! Their estimate was only 34% of what the home was insured for - when over 70% of the home had been affected by the damages sustained!

They issued a payment without my approval (explicitly against the policy terms) - which I have not cashed / accepted. They also said that if I could not complete the work for their estimated amount, or if the work included areas / items they did not include (for which there were many), I would need to obtain approval prior to starting any work. I had a bid submitted to them when the Claim was made; however, they said I needed to obtain another one. I solicited another company which provided them a bid in April and for more than 45 days (against State regulation), they had not responded to that company nor myself.

After I submitted a complaint to the State (and sent them a copy) they responded with a letter ("EDL"), which included where they went back to their AFFILIATE party and had them provide an 'addendum' to their original report which contracted the findings in the original report. This EDL denied coverage for the exterior damages - damages which were not included in the bid submitted for approval. Still unable to reach the adjuster for the Claim, I informed the call center that this was, yet another, completely unreasonable delay tactic.

If the exterior was in question, then would it not have been more prudent to provide approval for the interior of the home because, by doing so, it would have been evident if the exterior damages were as a result of the Covered Loss? And, if it truly was necessary to make a determination on the exterior before sending approval for solely the interior work, why was the Engineer not contacted for over a month after the questions were raised and a bid sent?

No response was given, instead State Farm issued a letter saying they would not cover two rooms of the 9 in the home (including one which was adjacent to where the damages began) because they did not show signs of water damages - when there are literally photos of water dripping from the ceiling. A complaint was filed with the State Insurance Department but according to them, they can rule if State Farm has acted in bad faith, but they cannot actually make them adhere to the terms of the Policy or otherwise act accordingly. So there is no recourse for me to recover for damages owed.

After the install I notice a nail was sticking out at my living room ceiling due to the roofing nails. State farm claimed this is a second claim. My Garbage disposal broke and made some water damage. After going back and forth with the agent, I replace the disposal myself. I informed them to cancel the claim. However according to the letter, it is claim # 3. Two of the claims are denied and no monetary exchange or reimbursement for Claim #2 and #3 Happen. I did let them know I would take care of the issues myself and still all this got hold, against my policy.

To be honest, the State doesn't even deserve a rating of one. If you are looking for home insurance please stay away. Whenever you have an issue with your home, they try to undervalue or downgrade your problem and probably pay you 20% or consider your damages not bad enough to justify your claim. Their adjusters never answer their phones or return your calls. Please never use them.
