I'd give them zero stars if possible. If your employer uses Mutual of Omaha for their disability insurance, you need to quit that job. And stay away from any potential employer that uses them as well. This advice may not mean much to you now but wait until you need to file a claim. Stay away from Mutual of Omaha if your sanity is important to you. This company goes out of their way to frustrate you so you can give up on your claim. For some odd reason, they never receive any documents on time. It takes them weeks to confirm receiving anything from Doctor's offices and even longer to review them. They intentionally give you the runaround. I am surprised they haven't asked for documentation from God himself to ensure I did not have pre-existing condition before birth.
They tell you they have Doctors who review claims but these guys focus more on dates than actual medical reports. It will amaze you how they ignore relevant medical statements while they focus on irrelevant dates. I was even asked to get a medical report that did not exist. Like, I never saw a particular doctor within a specific calendar year yet Mutual of Omaha insisted that I get a report from that Doctor for that time frame. Stay away! I don't care how desperate you are for employment. If that employer ever mentions Mutual of Omaha, RUN!!! Run and don't look back. They suck! Thank me later.

Spent an hour and a half on the phone waiting for somebody to tell me that it takes up the 4 weeks before you get your short-term disability. You go back to work at 6 weeks. You get your first paycheck before you get your short-term disability which is WRONG! So people go without food, water being able to pay their bills because of the incompetency of the insurance industry, people lose their vehicles, lights, because not everybody has a freaking savings account. They don't have other people to help them pay their bills. How about getting your act together and doing your job and paying your customers who pay you to have insurance to cover them when they get sick or have to have a surgery.

I have been on maternity leave since 4/6/2026 and today is 5/6/2026 and my STD claim is still not approved. I am about to miss my second pay period. It took almost three weeks and me reaching out before I was told by my specialist that they did not have my employer's contact information and were unable to verify my pay. If they did not have their contact information why did they not reach out? They have no timelines or real answers on the process. I get everyone situation is different but by the time they decide to pay me my maternity leave will probably be over.
This is not the insurance to purchase if you need timely payments and have bills to pay. I honestly do not believe that they are at all about the consumers who are funding their business. The last thing I want to do on maternity leave is to continue to call this place every day and worry about how I am going to be able to pay my bills and take care of my newborn. I advise anyone reading this PLEASE STAY AWAY from this company. They are incompetent and could care less about you and your family. It is evident in the way claims are handled.

I am extremely frustrated with the handling of my short-term disability claim. I have not been receiving my weekly benefit checks as expected, and the primary issue appears to be a lack of follow-through in obtaining the necessary documentation from my doctor’s office. Despite providing all required information on my end and staying in communication, there has been a consistent delay due to your team not securing the medical reports needed to process my payments. This has created unnecessary stress and financial strain during a time when I should be focusing on my health and recovery.
It is unacceptable that the responsibility seems to fall back on me to chase down paperwork between your company and my healthcare provider. I expect better coordination and accountability in managing claims, especially when timely payments are critical. I would strongly urge improvements in communication and internal processes so other customers do not experience the same delays and frustration.

I wish there were negative stars, they would get 5 negatives from me. This is an HONEST review, not a “Karen” review. It’s been 6 months since my disability claim. I was working full time bought this insurance for STD through my employer and employer pays for LTD. Let’s just say I’m STILL WAITING for them to process the STD claim, STILL out of work as well. They request information (THE SAME INFORMATION) multiple times from you and your doctor. When you call to get an update, “We are still waiting for the requested information”. Now, my doctor has emailed my records and cc’d me, I KNOW WHEN THEY GET REQUESTED INFO.
They call you and leave a voicemail with their name but no extension, so when you call again to check your claim you get someone who can’t help you, they have to send a “task” to your reviewer. THE WORST company to deal with. You buy this insurance to help you and your family if the unthinkable happens, and then you’re left fighting for your claim, fighting to keep a roof over your head, and fighting to keep your children fed. DO BETTER MUTUAL OF OMAHA!

I had a hip replacement surgery after gathering all my medical records. My caseworker called me and told me that my claim was denied because I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon and he done an MRI. That’s the reason for my denial and that was considered pre-existing. I told her how is he gonna know what to do if he doesn’t do a test? I think this is very wrong on how they scam you out of your money. Something needs to be done about this company.
We’re sorry to hear about your experience, and we understand how frustrating and upsetting a denied claim can be. We’d like the opportunity to look into this further and better understand what happened in your situation. Please email your full name, policy number and a brief summary of your concern to customercare@mutualofomaha.com or call 1‑800‑775‑6000 (Monday–Thursday, 7 a.m.–5:30 p.m. CT; Friday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. CT).

I filed for disability from Mutual of Omaha. Employer provided insurance in late May 2025 after being out of work since January 14th. I was denied in early October. I appealed and was denied again. I have 2 doctors that have written letters that I am not able to return back to work to my position. My employer would not allow me to return without a release from my doctor. 1 of my doctors tried 2 times to call the out sourced firm evaluating my case with no luck. I wrote an email asking how my claim could be denied with 2 doctors saying I am not able to return to my job.
The so called unbiased firm they outsourced to never talked with me or requested I see a doctor of their choice. They still are denying the claim. I am going to see a lawyer next week to launch a law suit. With no income I filed for my social security in June and filed for social security disability that is still in process. I was told from social security disability it takes about 9 months to process. I am also going to file a complaint with my state insurance commissioner. Email is **.

I would advise others to look elsewhere for Short term Disability coverage. Even though the customer service has treated me well. The 60% of current income only lasted a short while before they lowered to 60% of the 60%. So, not withstanding the little help is better than nothing while recovery is underway, but the reduction to 1/3 of my usual pay wasn’t foreseen. Nor will I be able to completely heal before my bills start to suffer.

I was diagnosed with CHF and hospitalized 11/23. I also have Autonomic Dysfunction with causes syncope episodes constantly. I have passed out numerous times with which has caused a broken tooth, fractured ankle, numerous bruises to my face. I only shower in a shower chair with someone here in case I pass out. I had a colon resection in 2013 and have had chronic diarrhea ever since. I have severe depression and anxiety. My doctor says I can’t work and filled out paperwork she received from my case worker at Mutual of Omaha. He’s now telling me that they’re closing my case because they feel I can’t do a sedentary job.
My doctor said I may can sit a couple hours a day. I might be able to sit but I need to lie down. I also have arthritis in every joint and asthma. Very bad shortness of breath. And, I haven’t driven in over 2 years because of the syncope and dizziness. I was told I could appeal but how long is that going to take and leave me without an income? I’ve been a nurse for 30 years taking care of other people and now I need help.

I would not give this company any rating but of course that is not an option. The company is a complete rip off. If you sick they do not pay and allow their employees to get away with discrimination. You are better off with no short term disability insurance at all from Mutual Omaha. The money they take out your account you can save for guaranteed finances when your health issues have you unable to work for a short period of time. Do Not use mutual omaha.
