What is The Hartford home insurance?

The Hartford is an insurance provider that writes policies for home insurance and other coverages. It’s the only insurance company endorsed by AARP, and it offers special discounts and perks for AARP members. Its website is informative and has several resources to help you choose the right insurance. You can apply for a home insurance quote on its homepage.

The Hartford also focuses on community impact with its Human Achievement Programs, which emphasize education and volunteer work.

What does The Hartford home insurance cover?

The Hartford’s home insurance provides coverage for your house, rental, condo or personal property, including garages. Its coverage can pay for the replacement of your property and can also help with the costs of a temporary move due to property damages. Its liability insurance covers legal fees in the event of property damage or injury due to an accident you caused. Other coverage The Hartford offers:

  • Dwelling coverage helps protect anything directly attached to your home. It also covers internal systems like air conditioning, plumbing, wiring, etc.
  • Other systems coverage is ideal if your garage or shed is not attached to your home. This coverage helps with repair or replacement costs.
  • Personal property protection ensures your personal property (e.g., furniture, appliances and clothing) is covered in case of a fire, flood or related incident. You can purchase additional coverage for other expensive items like jewelry or artwork.
  • Loss of use coverage helps pay for temporary relocation due to home damages.
  • Personal liability coverage helps pay legal fees if you're found responsible for someone's injury while in your home or if you damage someone else's property.
  • Medical payments help cover costs related to another person’s injury on your property.

The Hartford home insurance quotes and costs

The Hartford doesn't have transparent pricing on its site — after using its quoting tool, you have to call its customer service line to receive your estimate. You’ll need to provide specific information about your home, location and property status in order to receive an accurate quote; your home insurance costs will vary based on your home's replacement cost, age, location and more. The Hartford does offer some discounts, including:

  • Bundled insurance: Discounts of up to 20% for bundling your car and home insurance.
  • Home security and safety device savings: Savings for alarms, sprinkler systems, deadbolts, smoke detectors and other safety equipment.
  • Retiree credit for retired AARP homeowners: Discounts for retired AARP members who work less than 24 hours per week.
  • Renewal credit: Loyalty discount for renewing your policy every year for four years.
  • Claim-free discount: Rewards for going without claims for extended periods of time.

Our Condo association has been with Hartford for 25 years with no on claims. They recently sent us a notice saying they weren't going to renew our policy because their guidelines have changed. We were not happy. I got a tip from a fiend and got a quote from Farm Bureau in Idaho. Their quote came in and the premium was less than half of what we were paying Hartford. We are still scratching our heads wondering how did we fall for this all of these years?

I put in a claim in March 2024. We had a wind storm with 60mph gusts. I was first told the wind wasn’t strong enough that day. I sent them a video of a big wind gust ripping the siding off of the one side of my house. They sent out someone else then they claimed the siding was put on incorrectly. Mind you the siding has been on the house 20 plus years with no issues. This company is a scam. Pay constantly year after year just to get denied on a legitimate claim. Don’t use this company.

First of all why are there no reviews since 2016? I'm going to guess that's because they were all terrible and somehow Hartford was able to delete them. They flat out denied a claim on my roof. We live in Central Texas there are more hail storms than I could even count and there were clear marks from hail damage on the roof. They just said no. And when I requested to appeal the decision they refuse to answer phone calls or emails. The agency that sold as the policy, that our family has been dealing with for over 50 years, tried to contact them and they would not answer him either.

One of our neighbors' office was completely destroyed, when the ceiling gave way because of all of the recent rains. Unfortunately, he was covered by Hartford also, for over 30 years. Same reply from Hartford. Claim denied. They didn't even take 24 hours to deny his claim. They did not have a valid reason, they just said NO. If you have homeowners insurance through Hartford, CANCEL YOUR POLICY AND GET COVERAGE THROUGH ANOTHER COMPANY IMMEDIATELY.

In my experience, the Hartford has 'excellent' auto insurance I would recommend--but I would not recommend their Homeowner Insurance (HI). That experience is vastly different. A few examples: They told me Chase was set up to pay my HI bill, so I wasn't worried about it--then 8 mos. after my bill was due I got a late notice saying I'd be canceled. Chase said they paid it, Hartford said they never received it. Chase was very helpful; immediately faxed them proof of the check... then weeks later I'd find out Hartford never got the fax. We did a 3-way call so Chase could fax the check & Hartford said they'd wait to verify it was received--then after it was faxed, Hartford said "Oops, it will take 3 days for us to verify."

After a week I called again they still didn't receive the fax, and they (Hartford) will never follow up. They told me "We don't make outgoing calls." Sometime later after they finally did receive a faxed copy of the check that Chase wrote on my behalf, with my name clearly on it, the Hartford then told me, "We never deposited this check, and we don't know who did. This is not our problem; it is up to Chase to find out who deposited it." And, of course, I had to call to get this information since they never do outbound calls. It has been about 2 years trying to find this check, and all I ever get from the Hartford is a late notice every 6 months or so, no help whatsoever.

I realize the Hartford is new at doing 'homeowner' insurance, but this is the most absurd experience I have ever gone through. I cannot imagine how I would ever get a claim filed or resolved if I ever had to file a claim, and I'm not about to find out; am currently looking for a different company. In the end, although I found their auto insurance to be extremely helpful; just superb--but their Homeowner Insurance is by far the worst I have ever experienced in my entire life, so I do NOT recommend the Hartford for Homeowner Insurance, but I do recommend them for auto insurance.

I warn people not to use this company. My homeowner rate went up $100 a month for no reason. They renewed the policy a month early. I have no escrow on my mortgage, yet for two years in a row they accepted payment from my mortgagee for the full year even though I had set up automatic payment every month. I had the money withdrawn from my account for Sept and Oct 2023. Then the first of Nov I get a check and a note stating they are reimbursing me for the payments I made. They shorted me $38.35 of what I actually paid. I had to go in to my account to find out why. They had accepted a full year's payment from the mortgagee, even though the Dec page says NO ESCROW.

I called billing and told them I had called in Sept and again advised them not to accept any payments from anywhere accept my account. The woman told me they would not return the money to the mortgage even though the Nov payment wasn't due yet. I asked her why and was told it was not illegal to accept payment from whomever they want and refused to let me talk to a supervisor. The year before when I found out this happened it had been done 4 months after it occurred. The woman I talked to then told me they could send the money back to the mortgagee but I would have to reimburse Hartford that money. Now this year they refused to do that. Now they have totally messed up my mortgage and I had to get an attorney to straighten out this mess Harford caused. Their premiums are too high for the coverage they provide.

Had a water damage homeowner's claim 8/7/23. The adjuster assigned has not been available and failed to call back or respond in a timely manner. We were out of our home for about 6 weeks because of The Hartford adjuster's failure to evaluate and pay the claim in a timely manner. It is now 10/13 and the majority of the claim is still not paid. No local adjuster available so we had to deal with an incompetent adjuster on the other side of the country. Terrible service.

Do not use this insurance company for any of your needs or to protect anything you have. Worst insurance company I've ever dealt with!! When it comes to you filing a claim they have ZERO care about your claim and could care LESS. Take your business to Allstate, Progressive or Farmers Insurance etc. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE LOW RATES FOR PEOPLE OVER 50 YEARS OF AGE. AARP should cease doing business with them FOREVER. Type in Google- The Hartford BBB reviews and the score is 1 star, HORRIBLE reviews. Also in Consumer Affairs the reviews are HORRIBLE. https://www.consumeraffairs.com/insurance/hartford_auto.html **

I have started helping my parents with their bills since they are now in their late 80's. I asked my Dad how much is his Homeowner's insurance monthly payment on their duplex? He said about $600. What? I couldn't believe it. The Hartford is charging my parents over $8000 a year for a standard homeowners insurance policy! And he said they have been charging them these high rates for years! In comparison, my husband and I have a duplex of the same value, in the same area and our homeowners insurance is under $900 a year. I looked over the Hartford's declaration page and my own declaration page from my policy. Our policies are almost exactly the same. Except the last line on his Hartford's says "Standard policy annual rate is $7,890".

After being a customer for 20 years, bundling home and auto, we have completely been ripped off. Our mortgage ck. Has paid our policy every year, for July to July. We sold our house in Jan. 2031, so we asked for our refund for that time period. Well rude customer service reps could not find our cancelation all record. We offered a closing settlement and no luck! Seems that even though they market to 50+, they don't honor that at all! 20 yrs loyalty and now we definitely feel ripped off. That is a substantial refund, esp. For those of us on ss$! We would not recommend them! Do your research, read the multiple reviews from senior citizens. Disgraceful! Really!
