How does Allstate homeowners insurance work?

Allstate homeowners insurance covers your home from certain perils in exchange for a premium. In the event of damage from a covered peril, you’ll file a claim, pay a deductible and Allstate pays the rest. Additional insurance coverage is available for events not covered in the traditional homeowners insurance package.

Purchase Allstate homeowners insurance directly from Allstate or through independent agents. Allstate also has a mobile app to get a quote, assess what type and amount of insurance you need and update personal information. Allstate writes policies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Allstate home insurance cost

In general, Allstate homeowners insurance costs are higher than those of other insurance companies. Expect a policy to cost anywhere from $1,250 to $1,650 a year, but important factors like location, size of home and coverage type determine your exact premium. You can request a quote online from Allstate.

What does Allstate home insurance cover?

Allstate’s coverage varies depending on where you live, but expect a homeowners insurance policy with Allstate to cover damage due to:

  • Windstorm or hail
  • Fire and smoke
  • Theft
  • Falling objects
  • Frozen plumbing
  • Water damage from appliances, heating and cooling systems, water heaters and plumbing

A traditional homeowners insurance plan won’t offer coverage for certain perils. However, you can purchase additional coverage from Allstate, such as:

  • Flood insurance: Typical Allstate coverage takes care of water damage from an appliance or burst pipe, but not from flooding. If you’re concerned about damage from flooding, consider purchasing flood insurance. In some locations, this type of insurance is required.
  • Earthquake insurance: This insurance covers your home structure and belongings from earthquake damage.
  • Personal umbrella policy: Add this type of policy to cover legal fees and lost wages due to lawsuits from visitors who get injured on your property.

Allstate home insurance discounts

Allstate offers a wide variety of discounts that can substantially lower the price for home insurance premiums.

  • Easy Pay Plan: Save 5% by setting up automatic payments.
  • No claims discount: A 20% discount awaits those who haven’t made any recent claims when they switch to Allstate.
  • Bundle discount: Save up to 25% by bundling homeowners insurance with another policy through Allstate, including auto or term life insurance.
  • Age 55 and retired discount: If you’re over 55 and not working, you might be eligible for a discount.
  • Welcome discount and loyalty discount: Save up to 10% by switching from another company, and the discount remains in effect throughout your time with Allstate.
  • Early signing discount: Expect up to 10% off when getting a policy at least one week before your current policy expires.
  • Home alarm discount: Have a home alarm? Earn another discount.
  • Roof discount: Hail-resistant roofs may qualify homeowners for a discount.
  • Smoke-free discount: Nonsmokers end up paying less for their policies.
  • Storm shutter discount: Homes with storm shutters have cheaper policies with Allstate.
  • Recent construction or purchase: If your home is newly constructed or you just purchased it, you can get a discount.

Allstate homeowners insurance plans

When you request a quote from Allstate, it will give three quotes: for Basic coverage, Extended coverage and Premium coverage. These are broad terms that may or may not include some of the supplemental insurance add-ons listed below.

  • Water backup: Covers a clogged drain or faulty sump pump
  • Green reimbursement: Covers energy-efficient upgrades in your home
  • Scheduled personal property: Covers valuables like antiques, collectibles and jewelry

I regret ever getting my home insured by Allstate. You begin to negatively suspect their reliability and trustworthiness when they arbitrarily increase your premium and deductibles, and you try to communicate with them but they nonchalantly ignore your messages. At the end when they manage to send a "curt" message to you, it will only be to threaten you that no charge is changing but will rather increase further!

Now here is my present experience with them this September 2024: My roof got damaged by the current on-going storm with torrent of water leak everywhere. Allstate refused to pay ANYTHING stating that most of the damages were already done overtime. I have never made any claim on my house because I have not experienced any issues. This is my first claim. They now tactically claimed that the damage they see as recent is far lower than my deductible of $5,320. Invariably, my claim is denied, I have to replace or repair my roof myself!

Well, reader, I admonished you earnestly: if you have the opportunity of reading this review including several other negative reviews below or above this very one, you better take this as "wisdom" and a call for you to AVOID regretting ever dealing with ALLSTATE. I promise you, it is just a matter of time, Allstate will fail you whenever it is time for them to fulfill their portion of the deal. Your relationship with ALLSTATE will end in premium TEARS! That is reality and the experience from those who have been through it.

As proof, I uploaded portion of the denial letter that Allstate sent to abort my claim. Take note of this clause from their letter as a mere deception: "We will continue to work with you to evaluate the other damages". At the end, Allstate did not cover anything. What they said next is: "the cost to repair this falls far below your deductible, so, Allstate will pay nothing". Well, I think I have shared my own TRUE experience with Allstate with main purpose of warning you not to be the next victim! He who has ears to hear, better hear from people who have been swindled already, otherwise, you may be gearing up to be the next person coming here on this platform to share your bitter experiences - with Allstate!

All-State home insurance is a waste of time and high cost. A storm tore off some of our roof. They want to "patch" it with non matching shingles. We even have a hole in our roof from a tree branch from the storm. Take your money elsewhere. Country Companies is trustworthy. My mom has them and same storm damaged her roof and home. She already received the payout and work is completed. Even the roofing contractors say All-State is difficult to work with on claims. AVOID ALLSTATE INSURANCE.

My claims person doesn't care that I'm a policy holder. She said that I should do more claims. I said I didn't think it was that serious. I couldn't even get anyone to come do the cleanup. She said I need to do it myself. Allstate needs to get better help. I thought I had the best insurance company in the world until I needed them. Know they said they will come when they get time.... Claim was sept 1st. They said they can't come until sept 19th to clean up or even dry the water leak. I will be looking for new service.

Allstate sucks. I had Allstate home owners insurance. I bought a policy but nobody told me it wasn't enough to rebuild my house. 114,000. That's not enough to rebuild a 3 bed 1 bath house. I bought a 2 bed trailer. Thanks for nothing Allstate.

About 8 or 9 months ago, my property got damaged by hailstorm along with everyone else's property in my subdivision in Richmond, kentucky. It affected everyone's roofs, siding, gutters and other personal items on some property's as well. Unfortunately Allstate insurance company claims adjuster Troy ** does not want to cover my siding and gutters. He wants us to fill out a new claim, so that we have to pay an additional $2,500 deductible. On top of the one I have to pay to have the roof redone. He also shorted us on the roof amount by only giving us $9,000 towards getting our roof redone. Unfortunately that is not even enough to cover what the roofing company's prices are to fix it. Every roofing company I talked to wants at least $15,000 and there is some other outside damage as well that may not get replaced.

Just about every other insurance company that supported homeowner's insurance around the Richmond, kentucky area paid at least fifteen to sixteen thousand dollars out to get roofs redone, but not allstate. Please, please don't go with Allstate insurance. Company for your homeowner insurance needs, you're will be very disappointed and upset if you have a home owner claim. I would definitely not recommend anyone, that's looking for homeowner's insurance to get allstate insurance.

Worst insurance ever. It’s been almost 4 months since our neighbor's tree fell on my house. Originally we tried to use a contractor from their preferred network but he ghosted us. After not returning a phone call for a month he finally reached out after we told our adjustor that we want to go with someone else whom is also on their preferred list. 65% of my roof is destroyed but they aren’t going to replace the whole thing. So now I have to not only pay my deductible up front but if I want my shingles to match I have to pay for it.

I just want my house to the way it was like. They said they would but my house had matching shingles. Now they offered to pay the contractor directly after we give them the deductible. Again we are now almost four months in now and nothing has been done. I’ve been a customer for almost 10 years with no claims but I will be changing my insurance company after this along with my auto. Worst experience ever and worst insurance company. So for those looking don’t use them.

Have a water seepage problem coming from beneath clothes closet wall. Water Restoration sent two technicians to take photos, do some handheld device tests & that was it. Shortly thereafter, my claim was denied. Did not even have the normal benefit of an actual insurance adjuster come & look themselves. Just automatically denied without further research. I am very unhappy with this. Form your own opinion, but I feel that we were slighted concerning this. More concern/care could have been shown, as we are long term policy holders.

We had a sewer backup. They redefined it as a water backup, so they could change the deductible from $500 to $2000.00 Then they proceeded to tell me the cost was on me, as it fell under the $2000.00 deductible. They closed the claim. I sent them the receipts and the company that cleaned our system from outside our house separate from their people and it was defined a sewer backup! The project cost me over $3,000.00 to get it all fixed with their refusal to pay. Then they came back and said "We didn't say we would not pay" but I never received a dime. There was protestations and posturing on their part, but no intentions of honoring their contracts. I received no money.

They are okay. They may file most claims but they are worst to file a claim. If it is storm related and even if tree is basically lean so close house not covered. Even though wind cause it said wear and tear and maintenance. I will never recommend my worst enemy to this company. You have to do your own pictures and no one looks at it. Do yourself a favor. Go to a different company. They are good in some but ever since app you have take pictures yourself cause Covid even though Covid is gone.
