What faucet features and technology should you consider?
Improved water efficiency
Check for the EPA’s WaterSense seal before you buy a faucet. WaterSense labeled faucets use a maximum flow rate of 1.5 gallons of water per minute (gpm). This is a 30 percent reduction in gpm from the standard faucets, which produce around 2.2 gpm.
Touch-free and touch-activated technology
Each brand has their own touch-free and touch-activated technology, but they all work in similar fashion. You can find faucets that use a small turbine-charged battery (charged by water flow) that powers the motion sensor, as opposed to hooking them up to your electrical system like some faucets that use motion sensors.
Changing bathroom and kitchen faucets today are as easy as changing a lightbulb. Many brands use varying designs that let you swap out your faucet without ever having to go below the sink. You either snap them into place or tighten them on top of the sink.
The majority of faucets today are made with a spot-free, easy-clean coating. Whether you choose brushed nickel or stainless steel, you won’t have to worry about water spots, fingerprints or buildup appearing on the surface.
How does carbonated water straight from your kitchen faucet sound? What about filtered chilled water? A lot of brands make faucets with built-in filters and CO2 cartridges and chillers to make these features a reality. One bottle of CO2 will give you around 75 liters of carbonated water. Water-enhancing faucets are great for entertaining or if you just prefer sparkling water over tap water. If you just want regular tap water, you can set a switch to that setting.
Faucets with fixture-cooling technology are designed with a barrier between hot water and the metal faucet. It’s a great feature if you have small children who might reach up and grab your tub faucet.
Almost all brands make and sell faucets that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you or a family member have dexterity issues or limited mobility, check out the many different models and styles of ADA compliant faucets available. ADA faucets using technology like motion sensors and tap sensors to turn the water on and off, as well as sensors that shut the water off after a set period of time.
What are the different types of bathroom and kitchen faucets?
A pulldown faucet uses a spray nozzle that pulls straight into your sink. They’re great in the kitchen for cleaning dishes or produce.
A pull-out faucet differs from a pulldown in that a pull-out has a faucet body that works in a straight line, while a pulldown has a curved body that can only be pulled downward.
A single-handle faucet uses one lever you can position left or right to get warm or cold water. They come in hundreds of styles for your kitchen or bathroom.
A dual-handle faucet has separate hot and cold levers. They can be attached to the same centerpiece or a few inches apart but are always next to the main spout. They require separate hot and cold water connections.
Commercial style faucets have long, flexible designs and usually don’t have much of a cover. Some designs include multiple taps that dispense different flow-styles in one model. They’re great for large sinks and give your kitchen a modern look.
Pot-filler faucets are often found installed above an oven range and have extendable arms to reach over a pot. They’re typically mounted into your wall.
Motion detection faucets use a sensor to start the water flow when you pass your hand or objects within around 4 inches of the faucet. They’re a good fit for bathrooms and kitchens.
Pressure sensor faucets turn off and on with a tap from the back of your hand, wrist or forearm. They’re great for kitchen sinks when your hands get dirty while cooking.
Which faucet style best fits your home?
If you like a traditional look, choose a design with classic colors and finishes like brass, bronze and shiny nickel.
If you like a modern look but aren’t quite ready to go full-modern, check out each brand's transitional style collections. This style blends rustic looks with modern style.
If you’re looking to spice up your kitchen or bathroom with a sleek, bold and edgy look, choose a faucet from a contemporary collection and bring out your artistic spirit!
