Choice Home Warranty coverage and plans

Choice Home Warranty has two coverage options: the Basic and Total Plans. You can customize either plan with several add-on options.

Both plans cover household items regardless of age. Coverage usually begins 30 days after enrollment (unless you can show proof of prior coverage showing no lapses). Plans typically last one year.

Add-on coverage

You can add any or all of the following optional coverages to the Basic or Total plan:

  • Pool and spa
  • Central vacuum
  • Second refrigerator
  • Well pump
  • Limited roof leak
  • Stand-alone freezer
  • Sump pump
  • Septic system
  • Septic tank pumping

Choice Home Warranty cost

Choice Home Warranty prices range $49.17 to $57.50 per month. Your exact home warranty cost will vary depending on your location and the features of your home. Anecdotally, Dwayne in Maryland said he pays $800 per year for his Choice Home Warranty plan.

Most plans have a flat $75 or $100 service call fee per claim. A service call fee is like a deductible. You pay it to the service provider who comes to your home. If the cost of a repair or replacement exceeds the coverage limit, the customer is responsible for paying the difference.

Choice Home Warranty coverage exclusions and limits

Appliances and all systems, including air conditioners and water heaters, have coverage exclusions in most Choice Home Warranty Plans. That’s why it’s important to read the service agreement thoroughly to understand what’s covered before signing up.

Coverage exclusions

Choice Home Warranty plans won’t cover the following:

  • Known or unknown preexisting conditions
  • Routine maintenance or breakdowns due to neglect, abuse or physical damage
  • Items still under warranty by a manufacturer
  • More than one of the same appliance or system (with some exceptions)
  • Specific components and parts of certain appliances and systems
  • Permit fees
  • Other exclusions noted in the contract

Coverage limits

Choice Home Warranty has a $3,000 cap per 12-month period on most covered appliances and systems, though some systems and appliances have lower caps. Some notable exceptions are listed below.

How to file a claim with Choice Home Warranty

If you have a contract with Choice Home Warranty and need to file a claim, follow these steps to request service:

  • Call or log in to the online account center to request service as soon as you notice a problem.
  • Service providers are contacted within four hours. Choice Home Warranty lets you know the contractor’s name and phone number and the appointment time - usually within 48 hours.
  • A contractor arrives to repair or replace your broken system or appliance. You pay the service call fee of $100.

Why would a claim be denied?

Choice Home Warranty may deny a claim if the problem is determined to be a preexisting condition or the result of misuse, abuse, neglect or failure to maintain the appliance or system according to the manufacturer’s directions.

If your claim is denied, you can ask for Choice Home Warranty to review its decision. The company may ask for maintenance records as part of this review.

Real customer experiences and complaints

Overall, happy customers appreciate the responsiveness and promptness of the technicians, as well as the professionalism and knowledge they bring to the job. Most verified complaints appear to be about claims disputes, which is common among warranty companies.

  • Rose in California pays $1,100 per year of coverage plus a $75 service charge fee: “The cost for one appliance to fix was not even $200,” she wrote in a review. “So I (would have been) better off (saving) my $1,100 and just pay to fix it.”
  • Margaret in Arizona said that the claims process is fast and easy: “I filed a claim on a Monday and the appointment was the following morning. The technician was very professional, friendly, and helpful.”
  • Michael in Florida had a problem when his KitchenAid refrigerator needed to be replaced: “I purchased a new one for $3,799 and it (was) delivered and installed. Choice Warranty offered me $818 (Absurd) to replace it even though my plan had a replacement cost (up to) $3,000. I called to complain and after getting passed from one person to another I spoke to a person who said that (they) could increase the offer to $1,199, but it would have to be in the form of a Lowe’s gift card.

My prior warranty company's costs were rising year after year, prompting me to shop around. A Google search led me to discover Choice, which was highly rated. Their offering was attractive because it provided similar coverage at a more affordable rate and allowed for convenient monthly payments, unlike my former company that required a six-month advance payment. Submitting a claim with Choice is incredibly easy thanks to their online process. The only hiccup I experienced involved local contractors who sometimes wouldn’t honor appointments or failed to communicate effectively. However, the issues were with these contractors, which isn’t Choice's fault. Their customer service was supportive in helping me switch contractors, effectively addressing this New Mexico-specific challenge.

The quality of contractors I've encountered through Choice has generally been excellent, with the only minor drawback being occasional communication lapses. My overall experience with Choice Home Warranty would have been almost perfect if it weren't for their price increases, sometimes not communicated as clearly as I would have liked, with my monthly bills suddenly rising without any notice. When discussing home warranties with family and friends, I always recommend having a plan for peace of mind. In situations where costly repairs are needed, the protection provided by Choice is significant. This year alone, I saved over $500 on a garage door repair, paying only $1,300 instead of almost $2,000.

My experience illustrates that a home warranty, especially with Choice, offers both cost savings and security. Having someone to contact for assistance with home repairs makes taking care of a house less daunting. Choice’s database of reliable contractors ensures quality service. From personal experience, there’s clear value in the time and money saved with a Choice Home Warranty plan. Additionally, I learned the importance of proper coverage when an appliance repair took months and several hundred dollars due to oversight in my coverage plan. Thankfully, Choice made it affordable to add necessary appliances to my plan, preventing future issues like the refrigerator filter debacle. For just $16 a year, the inclusion of appliance coverage is a reasonable and valuable addition.

Our A/C compressor failed July 17th and I filed a claim July 18th. I received a notice that due to the extreme weather they were unable to dispatch a Technician service within the usual 4 hour period. We received notice on July 19th that a technician service, Tempchangers HVAC, had been assigned and they would contact us prior to arrival on July 19th. I was out of cell phone coverage for a while on the 19th so I forwarded the information to my wife so she would be aware of their arrival.

Unfortunately CHW did not have my wife's phone on record and consequently neither did the service technician. She was unable to reply to the technician's call that day and therefore they never showed up. My wife tried contacting CHW by phone and by the website. CHW denied her inquiry because her phone number wasn't on the contract. She tried a second time with my phone number, but still was unable to establish any meaningful conversation.

On July 21st I tried contacting Tempchangers HVAC unsuccessfully because they don't have means to leave messages outside their M-F, 9-5 hours. I also texted them to have them call me. I never received a reply from Tempchangers HVAC. Then I contacted CHW and discovered they did not have any contact information for her even though her name is on the contract. I gave CHW her information, but only her phone number could be listed as a secondary contact and not an email address.

CHW set up another appointment and on July 22nd a technician contacted us by text approximately thirty minutes prior to arrival. He was polite and professional. The technician diagnosed the initial problem as a burned out fan quickly. He will perform a full diagnostic once the fan is replaced. Now he has to wait on CHW to approve the replacement of the fan before he can purchase the new fan. The fan is required to test the compressor.

It is now July 23rd, now 5 days and we still have no A/C for comfort and protection to endure the high 90's and 80% humidity. Now we are concerned about the possibility of mold and mildew damage. Now we are looking at least a 6th day if replacement of the fan is approved and the technician can find a replacement. Then he will have to test the system to ensure there is no potential damage to the compressor. CHW should have ensured that there was a secondary contact information for my spouse who is included in the policy. CHW only allows provision for a secondary phone number, but no email address. Those two arrangements would have possibly reduced downtime by two days. I have supplied my wife's contact phone number to CHW and to Tempchanger HVAC in the event they are used again.

I looked to see how home warranties were rated and Choice was rated highly so I chose them. I've had good and bad experiences. I wasn't happy with my last experience where I had no heat. The temperature outside was in the 40s, felt like 30-something, and they did immediately set an appointment and advised me to confirm it with the company, but it was a whole week from the day I was calling. Also, the company was in Tennessee and I'm in Massachusetts. They cited the fact that they had people scheduled in New Hampshire.

Then, they denied the claim. The first thing they wanted to say was that the reason for the air bubble in the oil thing was negligence and lack of servicing. I sent them proof that I had this furnace serviced as late as December 2024. I sent them a copy of the card that my servicer leaves every year that showed the furnace was serviced every year for 20 years and I never had an air bubble in my oil line ever before. But they do allow me to challenge the claim, in which case, I only got approximately half of the cost of turning my heat on.

I had another one with a dishwasher. They say if they can't fix it, they'll replace it and they couldn't fix it and they gave me 200-some dollars and told me that would buy me a new one. You couldn't buy a dishwasher of the cheapest kind for $299. I think the cheapest I could find from Lowe's or Home Depot or any of the electrical appliance shops was 599. I was just thinking I should be looking to see if there's a better warranty. If they can't provide a technician or service person to do the job for a week or even locally and I have to find my own, it defeats the purpose, and then I only get paid half as much.

I first received an email from Choice on feb 4,0225. And I began researching choice's offering. Along the way I received a few more emails, still not sure what I wanted to do. I continued to research. Then the calls started coming in and if there's no caller id displayed, I would not answer the call. But for some reason I answer the call this morning and I was greeted by a pleasant voice whose name was Mathew. He explained the reason for his call was he saw me online and called. After Mat explaining the home warranty in detail, we discussed cost, terms, what is covered. He did so in a very understanding manner for me to understand. The more Mat talked the more I felt I could trust him. After a short talk with my wife, Cheryl we agreed this is what we could.

Some questions followed and the answers from Mathew were acceptable and I told him he won. He gave us the price and he then stated that we lived in a zip code that qualified for a program. He explained the 6 year option and the cost and benefits of the program. He gave me the price and I asked did I have to commit today to it and he responded by saying the stood for 30 days and there is no pressure to sign now. I forget the price he said for the 6 years, and asked was there an issue with having to pay all that now, I told not really, he then asked if either me or my wife were over 55 and I said we were, or either of us veterans and I said we both were, he put me on a short hold to ask his supervisor something and when he came back there was a much better offer then the original. At that point it was a no brainer and we committed to getting the home warranty. The last thing I will say and I'm sorry for the extended review, but Mathew was well worth it.

On Sunday 1/19/25, I submitted a claim for my heating system that the pilot light would not stay lit and that in order for me to get any heat I had to relight the pilot light by hand. Here in Abilene, TX the temperatures at that time were running in the high 30's low 40's during the day and in the mid to low 20's at night and the pilot light was shutting off at night as well as in the daytime. On Monday at 10:43 am my time I received a confirmation email that my service request had been received, approved and that the hunt for a service technician had begun. To be fair Choice did send me an email giving me the chance to bring in my own vendor to fix the problem providing that they provide a list of requirements to Choice and then if everything is just right, I might be reimbursed within 30 days. The problem here is that no large company in town will work with home warranty providers.

Finally on Tuesday 1/21/25 at 3:22 pm my time I received an email that a service technician had been assigned, and the appointment was set for Friday 1/24/25 between 11 am and 3 pm. They provided me with the name of the company and the contact along with the phone number. This not being acceptable I called the vendor and talked to Josh (owner and nice guy) but he told me that he was really backed up until Friday but if he could find an opening before Friday, he would give me a call.

Wednesday 1/22/25 about 3:30 pm Josh called me back and said that he could come right over if that was convenient. He arrived about 10 minutes later. About 30 minutes later problem solved and as of this writing Thursday 1/23/25 at 2:45 my time the pilot light has not failed. K udos to Josh with Emergency Trade Service LLC, he was knowledgeable, polite and understood my problem. Josh's company, like all the other companies sent out by Choice are "startup's" and once they get their footing, they drop Choice because of turnaround time for payment. (So, I have been told).

We were loyal customers for almost 8 years and rarely used the warranty. When we did we had okay customer service and technicians. After this last time that I called them for my heat pump they sent out the technician and then “approved “ the claim but only for $140! They kept saying it was a modification and that isn’t covered. They needed to replace parts and I tried explaining that, even had a case manager and she just kept saying modifications are not covered. What part of replacing parts is a modification? I even saw the work order the tech sent in broken down by what parts needed replacing. Well, needless to say I canceled the warranty with them. Choice is a scam and they don’t want to pay when something needs repairs.

I just signed up for this home warranty service. I changed from my previous provider to Choice Home Warranty because of the high review marks and they were one-half the price of my previous provider. While there is a $100 service fee, I saved so much money that I will easily "recoup" the difference.

⭐ 1 Star – Extremely Disappointed and Frustrated. I am beyond disappointed with Choice Home Warranty. My recent experience has been nothing short of unacceptable. Our water heater broke, and they sent ProDignity/Pro Integrity Plumbing. The technician tried to force unnecessary modifications and demanded over $1,300 out-of-pocket for things that were not needed. My pipes are brand new, and even my own plumbing company confirmed no modifications were required.

When I called Choice Home Warranty to report this, Mrs. ** told me that if I wanted the water heater replaced, I had to agree to ALL the unnecessary modifications and pay the out-of-pocket charges. I refused because the extra charges were unreasonable and not justified. To make things worse, I asked for a second opinion, and they refused. Their own email originally said they would cover the tank fee and $300 for labor. But after the plumber submitted the invoice, CHW suddenly changed their stance and claimed they would not cover the replacement because it wasn’t “pre-approved,” even though this happened on a weekend and they were unavailable.

We were left without hot water, and CHW offered zero support, no alternative, and no solutions. I have never dealt with a warranty company that makes things this difficult. They deny coverage over technicalities, rely on contractors who push unnecessary charges, and provide terrible customer service. Save yourself the stress and money. Do NOT use Choice Home Warranty.
