American Standard walk-in tub models and prices

American Standard is a household name for dozens of home fixtures. Its line of customizable walk-in tubs is among the most impressive of its home appliance collections. American Standard offers walk-in bathtubs in four varieties: air baths, bathtubs, whirlpools and combo massage tubs. Its extensive selection lets you choose a tub based on your comfort needs.

*Cost ranges at the time of publishing may not include installation.

Here are the differences between each type of walk-in tub model:

  • Deep soaking tubs feature extra depth for full-body immersion while seated, typically with a built-in seat and safety grab bars.
  • Walk-in whirlpool tubs use strategically placed water jets to provide therapeutic massage and circulation benefits through pressurized streams of water.
  • Walk-in air baths utilize many tiny air jets throughout the tub to create warm bubbles that provide gentle, full-body massage and aromatherapy benefits.
  • Combo massage tubs combine both water jets and air jets in one system, allowing users to choose between or simultaneously use both types of therapeutic massage options.

» COMPARE: Best walk-in tubs

American Standard’s walk-in tub materials include fiberglass and acrylic. Choosing between a fiberglass and an acrylic American Standard walk-in tub depends on your budget, your ability to clean and maintain your tub and the location of the bathroom in your home.

  • Fiberglass walk-in tubs from American Standard are less expensive, made of lightweight material and ideal for two-story homes. However, fiberglass tubs can be more susceptible to chipping, cracking and failing. They can also stain and absorb water, which can lead to mold buildup if not properly maintained.
  • Acrylic walk-in tubs from American Standard are less susceptible to physical damage and mold, but they’re more expensive. The heavier material makes acrylic tubs better suited for bathrooms on the first floor.

Both tubs have the same 10- to 15-year lifespan.

American Standard walk-in tub cost

An American Standard walk-in tub typically costs between $5,000 to $16,000, with a 28-by-48-inch soaking tub costing significantly less than a 32-by-60-inch combo tub with chromotherapy and ozone self-cleaning systems. Tub size, type, material and any additional features affect the price.

To obtain an accurate quote, customers can schedule a no-cost, no-obligation, in-home safety evaluation. American Standard’s contractors determine prices based on the following:

  • Bathroom layout
  • Doorway and hallway width
  • Electrical system
  • Existing plumbing configuration

American Standard provides a quote based on the evaluation, the type of walk-in tub you choose and the additional features you’d like. American Standard also offers 12-month, no-interest, no-payment financing for qualified applicants with a minimum purchase of $10,000.

American Standard walk-in tub features

For comfort and safety, each American Standard walk-in tub includes built-in contoured seats, a safety bar and textured bath floors. Most come fully equipped with a fast-fill tub faucet, a hand-held showering wand and a color-matched drain and overflow. For units without fixtures, an American Standard walk-in tub faucet can be ordered separately.

In addition to standard safety features, most types of American Standard walk-in bathtubs include massage jets for relaxation:

  • Air baths feature over 20 individual jets that deliver all-over, water-based massage therapy through tiny, warm air bubbles.
  • Whirlpools include up to 13 water jets with an optional legs-only massage.
  • Combo tubs combine the benefits of air baths and whirlpools with up to 39 jets total.

To keep the massage jets clean, specific combo and whirlpool models also include ozone self-cleaning sanitation systems that help the unit run efficiently and cleanly.

In addition to massage jets, combo tub users can also benefit from multicolored chromotherapy. American Standard tubs equipped with chromotherapy use underwater LED lighting to add a color wash or flowing color sequence to your bath.

All units use American Standard’s patented technology to remove water from the tub in less than two minutes. This technology is usually called Quick Drain, although some larger models (60 inches by 30 inches) use Minute Drain technology.

American Standard walk-in tub installation process

The installation process with American Standard takes two steps:

  1. Free in-home evaluation: A professional bathroom safety specialist comes to your home to do a safety assessment, explain financing options and the lifetime warranty, and provide a free, no-obligation price estimate based on the options you choose. Only select walk-in tubs offer full installation, so be sure to ask the specialist for the specifics of your chosen model.
  2. Schedule your installation: Factory-trained, certified specialists install your American Standard tub, typically within one or two days. The installation team also removes and discards your old tub. Once installed, the American Standard contractor tests your tub and explains how to operate it. The installation cost is determined during the in-home evaluation.

I wanted to get a tub and my husband picked American Standard out. Our experience with their team was very good. The salesperson was very easy to get along with and ask questions. He was very informative and we loved him from the get-go. The installers were very polite and very up on things and they left everything spick and span.

On the installation day, they came in and they had the tub. We have an elevator that goes to the second floor. So, they brought it up in that. They had to take our one door off to get it through and they had to do some minor adjustments with the one wall in the bathroom. They had to take it down and then rebuild it back up. They were here for about seven hours. It wasn't that long, and I was surprised. Their work quality is very good.

The tub has every bell and whistle on it. It has lights and all the jets. It has the shower part. I use it because I can't stand, and it's a welcome thing for me because it was getting to the point where I was showering less and less because I could not do it physically. Now, my husband gets in this tub twice a day because he has arthritis in his back. He's sitting in the hot tub with jets going. I also love the jets a lot. I'm cleaner now, which makes me feel better going out. I feel much more normal now getting clean every day.

We recently moved my dad in here and got a walk-in tub and shower installed by American Standard. He's 96 and it's for his safety. He loves it. However, my electric bill has been $100 more. I just got the new bill, and it's another $100. We had Duke Energy come out here, and the electrician was up in the attic. We thought something else was wrong until the electrician showed us. They took pictures up there. The installer from American Standard had to run wires from there over to the bathroom but never replaced the insulation. He just left it. We were losing all our cooling in the house right out into the attic.

It was just over a week ago that I contacted American Standard's customer service, and they got back to me and told me it was being given to a technician. But I didn't hear anything and it was over a week, so I called back and also resubmitted an email. We had already sent the report that Duke Energy gave us to American Standard's customer service department. I'm a little upset that my bill’s a couple $100 more than it's ever been in the time we've lived here. We didn't know that he did that. We realized it was hot up there when he was doing it, but it's a $22,000 install, and we should have gotten a little better than that. In our last house, we had the same tub installed, and everything was perfect.

I was interested in a walk-in tub, talked to two other companies, and I liked American Standard best. The gentleman came out and introduced himself, and he told me what they could do and what it looked like. He also showed me parts of the tub that he had with him. The name sold it to us as much as anything else.

In the installation, they came when they were supposed to, and they explained what they were going to do. They set the walk-in tub out on the driveway and had my wife and I get in one at a time to see if it would fit us. And the one that they had was too small for me, so he said he had another one that was primarily used for wheelchairs. And so that was the one that I selected. It is a walk-in tub combo with the shower. Installation took five hours, and the product looked outstanding.

I’m having trouble with my legs. I have neuropathy. And then this tub it does not cure neuropathy by any means, but it makes my legs feel better. And I like the idea that there is an automatic cut-off after 20 minutes. It just makes me feel better. And my wife is gradually getting accustomed to it. She likes it fine.

The only problem that I have is I did not try one before I bought it. This tub is big, but it only comes up to halfway up my stomach. The rest of my body is out of the water – I am 6’2”. I would like to be a little further in the tub, but that is impossible with what we have got. I could have gotten one less expensive, but I was buying on name recognition. So, overall, I’m satisfied. Try it out.

I researched online and did some comparisons, and decided that American Standard would be right for us and the sales visit was very good, thorough. I met him along with my sister and he handled both of us really well. They called ahead of time, as I had requested, to let me know they’d arrive in 30 minutes so I could meet them. My sister is older, so I handled most of it. Everything went like clockwork, they were professional, nice, and did a really good job. We were very satisfied. It looked really good when they finished. I stayed out of there because I knew they knew what they were doing.

We like the tub for its many features, but the main one for me is that it cleans itself and purges the water from the pipes. Regular tubs don’t do this, and if water stayed in the pipes, mold and mildew could build up and blow out the next time you use it. Being mechanically minded, that was the feature I liked best. I know how a regular tub does, if you wait a week or two to use the jets, green buildup comes out when you turn them on. I have a tub like that and barely use it for that reason.

We had a walk-in tub for years. We bought it online and we had a friend of ours who does plumbing put it in. So we had it because my husband had a stroke and that made it easy to get in and out. When we moved, I said I needed a tub. I went online and just put walk-in tub and a bunch of them came up and I made appointments with them all. American Standard came first and it just sounded so good that we just went with them. And I love the tub. Then, we had to move again from North Carolina up to Ohio. I just paid for the tub. It was in my daughter's house. I lived there with my daughter. She's still enjoying it. When I moved up to take care of my mom in Ohio, I said, ''We need a tub up here.'' So we bought another one.

In both instances, the installers did a good job getting it in there. And they both ran into some problems so I had to have them come back. Sometimes they would leave stuff. This time, they had torn up a piece of tile and molding. We got to repair that. But other than that, they got the tubs in nicely. Also, I had a problem with the installation of one of the tubs. One of the little handles that you sit by fell off within about a week. I called and they came right away and put that back in. And it's just a fluke.

With the latest tub, we got a shower curtain in there. It goes along the back of the tub so you could take a shower but the technician put it in backwards. So I had to call him back to turn it around. But overall, as far as getting that installation and hooking up all that wire and climbing under the house if they had to, they did a good job.

I like the air jets, they’re perfect. They seem to be smoother and all around the body. With the other ones, they target you and they get a little bit hard or I have to move around to try to get them where I want them.

We have had the Liberation walk in tub for 11 days. The installers were knowledgeable but installing from 10 am to 8 pm was disruptive in our home. We were told to wait till day two to try the tub because water will left filled in the tub and it had to set. On day two we tried the tub. Our 50 gallon new water tank was not adequate to fill the tub, a jet wasn’t working and the door was leaking.

We are still waiting for a call back and a repair from the installer and the salesman. We are retired and spending 21,900 to have a tub that can’t fill and repairs needed even at day 11 is very frustrating and miserable. We now have a new water tank problem because can’t fill the tub with hot or tepid water. It comes up to second back jets leaving top two jets out of water which means you can’t turn the jets on. This was a huge decision for us and now we have a tub with problems which we can’t fill. We were told by Amer STD that a 50 gallon water tank would fill the tub so we bought a new water heater just to make sure. Wrong. Don’t get this tub without an 80 gallon water heater.

I liked that with American Standard, you could use a Hoyer lift to put someone in and out of the tub. It's really the only one that does that. Their sales representative was very thorough, took a lot of time, and explained in great detail as far as what was going on. He made us do a very informed decision. The installation team was fabulous. They had to widen the door for us to have access, but when they had gotten the tub and were putting the tub in, they looked at the height of the Hoyer lift we had and they put a little extra support. The height of our Hoyer lift was higher than the standard entrance, and so the installers installed extra blocks under there to get the height up right so the Hoyer lift that we had would work with it. The whole experience was good, and though it was more expensive than other tubs that I looked at, it was definitely worth it.
