Our editor’s take on ADT

ADT’s plans are ideal for homeowners looking for an established company with a wide array of home security products. Customers who have dealt with emergencies generally report positive experiences, especially regarding ADT’s quick and supportive response when alarms are triggered — a crucial factor for anyone investing in home security.

That said, we recommend considering other options before committing. While ADT earns praise for its product quality and individual service experiences, its overall customer ratings have declined over the past year, and a couple of competitors are now rated higher.

How customers rated ADT

Overall, customer reviews indicate a mix of positive and negative experiences with ADT. While some customers had positive experiences with customer service and felt secure with the system, many others faced issues with equipment and customer support. Some voiced confusion and complaints about the cancellation processes.

How satisfied are reviewers with ADT?

Customer service: Fair

ADT has received mixed feedback from reviewers on ConsumerAffairs regarding their customer service interactions. While some customers have reported positive experiences with helpful and knowledgeable representatives, others have expressed various frustrations with ADT's services.

Many have complained about long wait times and unhelpful representatives. Some customers have had difficulty canceling their contracts or have been charged for services they didn’t receive. Overall, there is a lack of satisfaction with ADT's service and a feeling of being misled.

Ease of use: Good

Reviewers on ConsumerAffairs have generally given ADT's security systems positive feedback for their ease of use. Many customers have reported that the installation process was straightforward and that the system is easy to navigate and operate. They feel secure and have peace of mind with the quick alerts and easy-to-use controller panel.

Some customers have reported technical difficulties with the system, though, including false alarms and difficulties connecting to the mobile app. As with any technology product, individual experiences vary. It's crucial to thoroughly research and assess the system's capabilities before purchase.

Product reliability: Fair

Many customers have reported that the system works as expected and provides reliable security, but a few reviewers have expressed frustration with technical issues such as false alarms or malfunctioning equipment.

ADT equipment and technology

ADT customers can customize their home security packages with additional equipment. Some of ADT’s most popular home security equipment options include:

  • Door and window sensors: These sensors detect when someone opens a door or window while your system is armed and alert you via text message.
  • Motion detector: The company’s motion detectors send you custom alerts when a sensor is triggered. ADT states pets won't set off the company’s motion detectors.
  • Google Nest cameras: ADT offers several types of Google Nest cameras, including battery-powered cameras for indoor and outdoor use, cameras with floodlights attached (for an additional charge) and wired cameras intended for indoor use.
  • Google Nest Doorbell: ADT uses the Google Nest Doorbell, which lets you answer your door from virtually anywhere. The video doorbell function on the ADT mobile app lets you view who is on your front porch in real time and features high-definition video with dewarping technology and two-way audio.

ADT also offers a variety of Google Nest smart-home devices, including thermostats and the Nest Hub. The company also offers smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, flood detectors and smart door locks. Flexible payment options for equipment installation are also available.

ADT plans and cost

ADT home security packages range from $349.00 to $719.98. If you don’t want to pay upfront, ADT offers flexible payment options. Each plan requires a monthly cost for monitoring, which runs from $24.99 a month to $39.99 a month.

You can choose from several ADT home security system packages, including:

  • Security Starter: This is ADT's least expensive package at $349.00. It comes with three door and window sensors, one motion sensor and a base unit to monitor your home. Monitoring and service costs start at $24.99 a month.
  • Outdoor Video: ADT’s mid-tier package includes everything from the Security Starter package, plus a Google Nest Cam that works both indoors and outdoors, and a battery-powered Nest Doorbell camera. The package starts at $289, with monitoring and service costs starting at $39.99 per month.
  • Front Door Protection: The company’s most comprehensive package includes three door and window sensors, a motion sensor, a Google Nest Doorbell with battery, a Yale Smart Lock and a base unit to monitor your home. The package starts at $719.98, with monitoring and service starting at $39.99 a month.

You also have the option of designing a custom system from scratch.

FAQ

How does ADT work?

Once you activate your ADT alarm system, it can report a notification, such as a crossed motion sensor, in any monitored zone within your home. If a sensor triggers, the system transmits a signal through your cellular connection or broadband connection. ADT monitoring centers receive this alert and begin coordinating a response until the threat is over.

You can arm ADT home security systems through the ADT app, ADT+. ADT+ gives you instant alerts of activity, access to live video footage and control over your entire system, including smart locks, smart lighting, climate control and your security devices.

Monitoring requires a three-year agreement, and termination fees apply for breaking a contract.

If you like the idea of professional monitoring but don’t want to sign a contract, check out ADT Self Setup, a DIY option.

How long are ADT contracts?

ADT offers both contract and no-contract options, depending on the system you choose:

  • Traditional ADT systems with professional installation typically come with a 36-month monitoring contract (24 months in California) and optional equipment financing for up to 60 months.
  • ADT Self Setup (formerly Blue by ADT) offers month-to-month monitoring with no long-term contract, and equipment financing is available for up to 36 months.
How long does ADT take to install?

ADT offers quick, professional installation to ensure your equipment is set up properly. Depending on the size of your home, it could take less than an hour. Larger homes could take a little longer. Here’s what you can expect from the installation process:

  1. To prepare for your ADT home security installation, ensure your home has power, a working phone line or Wi-Fi connection and accessible outlets near potential camera locations.
  2. On the day of the installation, technicians arrive to set up your system. For hard-wired setups, installers run wires through the home to each device and sensor, including all door, window and motion sensors.
  3. The technician will walk you through how to use your ADT home security system so you’re confident you’re using everything correctly.
  4. Once the equipment is in place, personalize your protection with customized alerts, video monitoring and emergency alarms.
Can I add cameras to my ADT system?

Yes, ADT offers Google Nest cameras that can be added to any system with a video monitoring plan.

Is ADT worth it?

ADT may be worth it, but we encourage you to shop around before committing. Customer reviews have been lower as of late, with multiple complaints about billing and communication issues. When you look at ADT as a whole, it has so much to offer: a well-established brand with a wide range of products. But there are currently companies with better customer reviews that might be worth looking at.

For those considering ADT, it’s a good idea to get quotes from multiple companies. The process can often help clarify what you’re looking for in a home security system, allowing you to figure out if ADT is the company that best fits your needs.

ADT has a good share of voice in the market through their advertising, which is how I knew about them. I've been a loyal customer for over 20 years now, and there's a good reason for that. From the outset, ADT had a good reputation and seemed well-equipped to meet all my security needs effectively.

Over the years, one thing that has really stood out to me is their outstanding customer service. The service team is incredibly patient, especially since technology can be challenging at times, particularly for those of us who aren't as young as we used to be. Whenever there were tiny hiccups with the system, they were quick to guide me through troubleshooting steps, which I've found immensely helpful.

Another aspect I've been impressed with is how prompt ADT has been in preventing false alarms. Given our knack for ensuring all security lights read green on the panel before opening doors, we've had minimal issues. Even though our electricity can be somewhat unpredictable at times, resulting in minor interruptions, their customer service has always been a reliable source of help, guiding us through necessary reboots.

ADT has progressively helped me update our old systems. I remember at one point, when a service technician couldn’t believe the outdated model I had, the company immediately set out to replace every sensor and control box to get us back on track. Nonetheless, I wish the exterior cameras had a more seamless integration with their system without relying on a third party like Google Nest, mainly because systems with fewer intermediaries run more efficiently.

As far as new technology is concerned, I'm fairly satisfied, although I haven't committed to exterior cameras yet for the previously mentioned reason. Our use of iPhone and other Apple devices has easily tied in with their services, making the user experience smooth across all our gadgets.

I've been an advocate for ADT for quite a while and a couple of my neighbors have added it, largely due to the excellent and varied services on offer. While I do find ADT’s value solid, the pricing, while not cheap, still manages to make it worth the expense. And when it comes to their online services, once I got the hang of it, it worked remarkably well for my needs, earning them my thumbs up without hesitation.

All in all, my long-standing relationship with ADT has been fantastic, and I give their services high marks for keeping us secure and satisfied all these years.

The ADT system is pretty good, but I've been having problems with it. Two weeks ago, the clips on my app was stuck in last month's services. Right now, my system is stuck on April 15th. So last month I called a rep in, which she did come, but she had to go through the whole house and plug every camera. Then she sent signals to the cameras and she rebooted the system, and it came back up. But my cameras are working fine. Periodically, they go offline, then they come back on again. I called ADT and asked this morning, “Is there a problem with your system? Because if it is, somebody needs to fix this, and this is an ongoing problem. Or do I need to call AT&T and let them know that I'm having a problem with the gateway.” ADT said the problem was with AT&T. But AT&T said it was ADT. So they’re flipping it back and forth, and I'm the middle guy.

When I call ADT, I usually get a one-minute wait time, and then I speak to a representative. Their attitude is very acceptable because they wanna take care of my concerns. But you need customer care services. Like this morning, the representative's concern was, “Well, how many smartphones do you have? How many smart TVs do you have?” So I told her, “Ma'am, there's nothing wrong with the cameras. It's that in your system, the clips is set up so when I hit the clips, I could see all the activities that's been going on, especially if my phone pops up and says, “Okay, Charles, there's activity."” I hit the clips and it can show who's coming and who's going.

But that system doesn't work. For some reason or other, it's frozen. The rep's attitude was, “Listen. I'll get you a tech and he’ll be calling you between 1:00 and 3:00.” I asked her, “Why? Can't you send me a new signal?” She said, “Okay. I'll send you a new signal.” Then three seconds later, she said, “Okay. I just sent you a new signal.” So I went back into the app and I told her, “But nothing has changed.” She thought I was a one-day dingbat. She said, “Well, I’ll have the tech call you between 1:00 and 1:30.” I said, “Okay. Thank you very much, ma'am. Have a nice day.” So you got those that have a caring attitude, and you got those that have a non-caring attitude. Overall, ADT is a good company. They do their best to satisfy their customers, but it depends on the representative that the person speaks to.

I like the app on the phone. The phone app is fine, and so is the system itself, because I can go to the panel and I can see and read it. I can also understand it. If any activity is going around the house, the app sends me a signal and it pops up, and then I can go directly to my cameras and I can see what's going on. If I see something that's inappropriate, I can contact ADT and let them know or I can call the police. They can immediately come to the house, and at the same time I can notify ADT.

Not very many people are up to date about do-it-yourself in a no-sales area. I don't know when I became a no-sales area. Between March when I signed up and now, I became a no-sales area. It took many transfers from one person to another person to another. If it wasn't for me having ADT's contract already signed, I would have dropped ADT. They need to educate their reps a bit more, when people are out of area. It took me a week to get through to the right person, because I was on the phone call for over an hour, all five times. And a couple of times, the phone call was dropped, and nobody returned my phone call. I had already been on the phone for an hour and 20 minutes before the last person was able to help me. She took good care of me. She needs to get some kudos there because it was awesome. She's very good with what she's doing.

The only thing I’m disappointed with is I cannot get transferred from ADT to ADT+, which I had to pay for this month for the ADT, is I can't transfer it to the Plus until I hook the other system up. Who knows when it's gonna get in the mail? Mail is behind right now. Come to find out I'm paying for a service that I don't have because I no longer have a monitor. I needed to update my 20-year old monitor system because mine had a surge and it no longer is good, but ADT doesn't carry that one, so they couldn't get parts for it. In order to get an upgrade for my home, I had to go through the do-it-yourself program, which is called ADT+, because I'm in a no-sales zone. I also asked, “Did they not reach out to you when you became a no-sales zone?” I said, “No. They did not reach out to me.” I pay monthly. I pay extra sometimes. They said that when my alarm system comes in the mail and I hook it all up, it's covered with a virtual rep or on the phone.

One person came out and reactivated it in this house and checked it out. The second person came out and fixed something. Now, it's, “I guess I'm a no-sales because the only city that can service me is Little Rock, Arkansas.” ADT did awesome with calling us if our alarm went off. I have to replace the smoke detector for the new system because these are old. ADT said, “You need to replace them every five years.” They reach out. That's why I kept them. If we don't answer, they will dispatch the fire department or the sheriff over here. That's 100% promise right there. They called us several times. ADT just needs to do their communication better.

I've been an ADT customer for over 24 years, starting when I first looked to secure my home. It's been a reliable experience, and their service gives me peace of mind. Over the years, I've had to replace batteries in sensors and the main backup, but overall, there have been no major issues.

Initially, the rising monthly costs were a concern, especially before retirement. The fees kept increasing until around 3-4 years ago, when, upon my complaint, they capped my payments. Now, as a senior on a fixed income, financial predictability is crucial. My only warning to others would be to watch out for the increasing costs over the years, although ADT has been accommodating recently.

Regarding the equipment, I've mostly had a positive experience. In my current home and previously, I opted for more sensors and detectors than typical, spending over $1000 to get the setup I wanted. The quality and efficiency of their equipment have been excellent, with sensors lasting years before needing battery replacements.

However, ADT's customer service has somewhat declined over the years. One day, the alarm in the garage door went off. According to the code I received, that's where the breach occurred. I left work and went home because I didn't know what was going on. I found out the system wasn't working as it should have. It should have sent a low battery signal to the control panel but it didn't do that. It went right to being breached. I called the police and at that time, ADT came out and replaced the battery on that particular garage door. But now, they don't do that. A year ago, I had to replace the battery backup. It’s a weird-looking battery and you can only purchase it from certain places or from ADT, which I did. They shipped to me but I had to install it myself.

I'm still happy with ADT. It makes me sleep better at night. You'll never read about anybody coming into my home and me waking up with somebody standing over my bed because I'll get forewarned long before that. ADT always follows up when my alarm goes off accidentally. But while I appreciate their reliability, this lack of personal service is a downside.

Finally, I wish ADT would provide a new manual or booklet for the control panel, as keeping track of all functions is challenging without it. Despite these issues, I would still recommend ADT due to their reliability, but would advise others to keep a close eye on costs and prepare to handle some support tasks themselves.

The ADT rep who came out told me about the company and showed me what the system looked like on the phone. He gave me the price and told me of how clear it would be. But I didn't get the system right then, and the price went up between the time that we talked and the time that I got it. But the installation was good. The guy who came out knew what he was doing and installed the system for me.

They told me the wall mount that I had was the best that was out at the time. About a year later, they called me back and told me that I needed to go with the other one. They didn't try to fix the one that I had. I had to go with a larger one this time. I didn't see not much difference in it but I had to pay $100, which was a big difference. The price that I started out with was good, but it went up.

I was having all kinds of trouble with my system. I was having trouble with the clearness of the camera and with it not taking pictures at night. I was also having trouble where I had to reboot it. I've had several false alarms but they did not contact me. They contacted my son instead of me. For the doorbell monitor, I needed the whole thing but they told me that they didn't have anybody to come out. They would send it to me and I could put it on. But I'm not qualified to put it on. Also, they only sent the bracket. They didn't send the doorbell Ring itself. I kept calling them back and they finally sent me the doorbell Ring. Now, I ended up with the bracket and the doorbell Ring. In fact, I got an extra bracket and a doorbell Ring to go with it.

They didn't explain it to me about the charging process for the doorbell. I thought I could charge it up with the computer, but they finally told me I could charge it up with my wall socket. They also didn't tell me that periodically, I have to charge it. Their customer service is very bad. I kept calling ADT about different problems I was having, but they kept referring me to different people who were telling me they didn't handle my issue. They should've referred me to the right people from the beginning. I monitor the system with the phone and with the computer. But when I asked them about a monitor, they wouldn't talk to me about it. They kept talking around it but I know there are monitors because I've seen people that got ADT that got monitors. But right now, everything is working perfectly.

My mentally disabled war hero veteran of a daughter is trying to get out of the contract because she unaware of her surroundings and they have not answered our letters, emails or phone calls. The saleswoman offered us free equipment and a low monthly monitoring cost. We gave her a credit card and scheduled an install date. A week before we were to go live, bottom line is suddenly the equipment cost was now $1000, and the monitoring fees were almost 2X what we were quoted. When we raised the issue of having the original bid, essentially, they said too bad. This is the price now. Buyer beware.

Only been with ADT for a year... Worst move ever!!! Early Monday morning my smoke alarm falsely went off 3 times. 1st time ADT called, we told them false alarm, disarmed the system and went back to sleep. 2nd time alarm went off, ADT called, I told them this can't keep happening. The lady said, "Let's schedule a technician to come out to see what's going on," we schedule a time of 5p-7p the next day, then transferred me to someone to troubleshoot the issue. It went off a 3rd time, then I was instructed to take the smoke detector off the ceiling.

The next day at 5p I received a call back from ADT stating that I requested a call back. I said no, I suppose to be meeting with a technician! They then told me they could schedule one to come out, however it will be next week and the fee is 80 dollars! I then spoke to a supervisor, told the supervisor the situation and what I was told. The supervisor said, "I will have the call pulled and have another supervisor call back in 24-48 hrs." 48 hrs passed, no call. I called back, complained about no call back, rep said she will have the call pulled. Stayed on for an hr, rep played the middle person and said the call was pulled by Zack.

I asked to speak to Zack, he got on the phone as if he didn't hear the call, not knowing the last rep told me he pulled the call. Started saying that he will have the call pulled and listen to see what's going on. I said, "Zach, did you not just listen to the call????" He paused and said, "Uhhh.... Yes.... Yes I did." Then I asked, "Did you not hear the lady say she will have a technician come out to see what's going on???" He said, "Uhhh... I'm not sure if I heard that part, you may be hearing different. I will have the rep's supervisor listen as well to make sure I'm not hearing different." A bunch of lies and bull crap!!! Funny how I inquire on service and get installation THE SAME DAY but gotta wait a week to get a technician out!!! ADT suck!!!!

Called ADT about a month ago, looking for protection for my home. After about an hour, we were able to get help from a customer associate. They feed me a great deal and made me feel like I was very taken care of and all my needs were met. I do not trust a lot of companies, especially in contract situations due to lack of communication on the company's end and I get stuck with a bill that does me no justice due to them selling me a false hope. I call a couple of months later and find out my account is on hold, due to my area not being supported with ADT. How are your employees capable of selling an unusable product. I'm told what I was offered is no longer on the table, but I have to keep my contact and rework something out. This is ridiculous and absolutely a waste of my time. Train your employees better, ADT. Or maybe they're working exactly how you want them to.
