What is LookMeds?
LookMeds is a telemedicine platform that launched in August 2024. It specializes in providing access to weight loss medications, although, according to CEO Eric Jenkins, it plans to “expand beyond weight-loss medications in the future, including sexual health, hair care, mental health and skin care.”
LookMeds serves as a virtual space where patients can receive prescriptions for weight loss medications after a consultation with a licensed health care provider. Providers include doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. LookMeds also partners with Top Nutrition Coaching to connect patients with guidance from a licensed nutritionist.
It offers both synchronous (video or phone chat live with a provider) and asynchronous (messaging that may or may not occur live) telehealth appointments. LookMeds follows local state laws regarding which appointment is required for prescribing medications.
The platform operates nationwide in the U.S., including in most states and Washington, D.C. Due to state laws in Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, New Mexico, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Washington, D.C., patients residing in these states are required to do a phone or video chat consultation. Any patient can request a consultation via these methods, as well.
LookMeds does not accept insurance. While patients may be able to use flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) funds to pay for medications, the company does not make any guarantees to that effect.
How does LookMeds work?
LookMeds offers a structured approach to obtaining weight loss medication through its online platform. Here’s a breakdown of how it operates:
- Get started. Complete a five-minute intake form by selecting “Get Started” in the top right corner of the landing page. If indicated by your intake, you’ll be offered weight loss medication options. Select your preference, pay the first monthly fee and wait for a provider to contact you.
- Provider outreach. LookMeds claims a provider will reach out to you within two to four hours, sometimes faster. That provider will review your information 100% online through secure messaging* and make sure your preferred medication is right for you. Providers may not approve your selection and can change it to something else. They may also decline to prescribe you medication entirely. In such a case, you’ll get a full refund. If your provider recommends a different medication, you may have to pay the difference before it ships.
- Get medication. Once prescribed, you’ll pay the first monthly fee which depends on the medication. Then, the medication will arrive in two to four days. Your medication will come in a discreet, temperature-controlled package.
- Participate in your ongoing care. You’ll receive continuing care through messaging with your provider, including completing check-ins and medication adjustments. The patient care team is available 24/7 and, according to Jenkins, is “equipped to answer frequently asked questions and serve as a liaison to the clinical team, ensuring seamless communication and care.”
LookMeds offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. New users can see how effective LookMeds' weight loss treatments are over this period. If you're not 100% satisfied after 30 days of joining the LookMeds program, request your money back for a full refund — no questions asked.
LookMeds weight loss medications
LookMeds says it uses compounded medications to avoid the high cost and back orders associated with brand-name drugs for weight loss. Both medications offered are classed as glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) receptor antagonists.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these medications mimic “the GLP-1 hormone that is released in the gastrointestinal tract in response to eating. One role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood glucose (sugar). GLP-1 in higher amounts also interacts with the parts of the brain that reduce appetite and signal a feeling of fullness.”
LookMeds offers compounded oral and injectable forms of these drugs only:
- Semaglutide: This is the active ingredient in brand-name medications Wegovy and Ozempic. According to LookMeds, patients can expect to lose about 15% of their body weight when using this drug for one year.
- Tirzepatide: Brand-name medications Mounjaro and Zepbound use this active ingredient. LookMeds claims patients average 20% loss of their body weight in the first year.
ConsumerAffairs asked Jenkins why LookMeds only uses these two medications. “For weight loss, semaglutide and tirzepatide are the most common and effective GLP-1s. Additionally, compounding pharmacies focus on these medications, making them readily available,” he said.
LookMeds cost
LookMeds charges a flat-rate monthly fee for its services based on which medication the patient is prescribed. This fee includes consultation, follow-ups, unlimited messaging with a provider, medication adjustments, a four-week supply of medication, 24/7 access to the patient care team and shipping costs. LookMeds does not charge any additional fees, according to its FAQ section online. Regardless of dosage, these are the listed monthly prices for the available medications:
- Semaglutide injections: $299
- Semaglutide dissolving tablets: $249
- Tirzepatide injections: $449
- Tirzepatide dissolving tablets: $399
LookMeds notes that prices of medication are subject to change. Billing occurs upon check out (before the consultation) and then every 28 days for each four-week supply of medication. Potential users should consider this policy may result in more than one charge in a single month.
LookMeds offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee for new users. After signing up, you’ll have a 30-day period to try out its weight loss programs and consult with its providers. If you’re not fully satisfied within the first 30 days, you can request a refund without any questions asked, and LookMeds will provide a full reimbursement.
Is LookMeds legit?
Yes, LookMeds is a legitimate new telemedicine platform operating nationwide in the U.S., including Washington D.C. (except in Mississippi and Louisiana). The company partners with licensed health care providers for weight loss management, offering a structured process for consultations and medication delivery.
LookMeds claims to prioritize privacy and security, adhering to strict confidentiality agreements and safeguarding personal information as outlined in its privacy policy. However, potential users should closely review the terms and conditions before paying since LookMeds has a strict “no refunds” policy.
Overall, LookMeds may be a possible option for those wishing to obtain weight loss medication shipped directly to their home and without in-person visits with a provider.
LookMeds FAQ
Does LookMeds have a membership fee?
No, LookMeds does not charge a membership fee. Users pay a single, flat fee based on which medication they’re prescribed. The fee covers everything associated with the service, including consultation/follow-ups, medication and shipping.
Where is LookMeds available?
LookMeds serves patients across the U.S., including Washington, D.C. However, it explicitly states it cannot/does not serve patients in Louisiana and Mississippi. Per CEO Eric Jenkins, “The state boards of pharmacy in Louisiana and Mississippi have taken a very narrow view on the raw bulk ingredients to compound these GLP-1s, and effectively said it is not allowed in their state.”
Does LookMeds take insurance?
No, LookMeds does not accept insurance. It claims your flexible spending account (FSA) or health care savings account (HSA) funds may cover prescription costs.
What medications does LookMeds prescribe?
Currently, LookMeds prescribes two drugs: semaglutide and tirzepatide. Both are compounded GLP-1 antagonists that come in orally disintegrating tablets or injectable forms.
Are you required to meet with a provider on LookMeds to have medication prescribed?
Yes, LookMeds requires you to meet with a provider to have medication prescribed. Your provider will meet with you via secure messaging unless you live in a state that requires a video consultation (Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.).
LookMeds CEO Eric Jenkins explained in an email the reason some states require video consults: “During COVID all states updated their telehealth visit requirements, thankfully making access to health care more accessible. Most states allow for asynchronous telehealth interaction, this would be in the form of a secure chat. Most patients today expect and are comfortable with secure chat, it’s flexible and convenient.”
He said the states listed that require a video consult currently require a synchronous telehealth appointment, which can be in the form of video or phone.
