How does Instacart work?

Instacart hires background-checked and trained personal shoppers to handle your grocery shopping. All you have to do is put a list together, schedule your delivery, pay online and receive your order. Here’s how it works:

Put your list together
Creating a grocery list on Instacart is simple:
  1. Enter your ZIP code to find out which local grocery stores partner with Instacart.
  2. Browse the different grocery stores and pharmacies to find the items you need. You can browse by item name or department.
  3. Add items to your cart and review your final selections.
  4. Check out by entering your payment info and scheduling a drop-off window. If you are ordering from multiple stores, you need to designate a drop-off time for each location.
  5. You also have the option of sharing a cart with friends or family. This is a great way for families to add what they need to a single cart, but payments can’t be split up.
Replacements
If your shopper gets to the store and an item on your list is not available, they replace it with the product’s closest match, replace it with something different from a list of approved items or skip getting the item altogether. You can choose which option you prefer when creating your grocery list.

If the replacement item is a different price than your original item, you receive a refund or are charged for the difference in cost. The Instacart app lets you communicate with your shopper during the process so you can add things to your order and see replies and updates from the shopper.

Schedule the drop-off
Once you create your list and complete your order, it’s time to pay and schedule a delivery. You can schedule the delivery within a few hours or set a day and time that works with your schedule.

During checkout, you can include delivery instructions for the driver, including gate codes, apartment numbers, parking instructions or ways for the shopper to identify your home.

Track the order and receive your groceries
It’s easy to track your order status with the Instacart app. Tap the “Account” icon, click on “Your orders,” and then tap an order to view its status. You can see the progress of your order directly on the app and get real-time updates on what items the shopper has already picked up for you.

When the shopper leaves the store, you receive a notification about the estimated time of arrival and an option to click and follow the driver’s progress.

Instacart Express

It’s worth looking into Instacart Express if you use the company’s service regularly. This monthly membership gives you access to exclusive benefits such as:

  • No delivery fees on orders of $35 or more
  • Reduced service fees
  • No increased pricing fees during peak delivery hours
  • The ability to shop at a variety of stores with free delivery on the entire order

Instacart prices

While Instacart makes life a little easier for many consumers, this convenience comes with a cost. Instacart charges a few fees to every order, including:

  • A 5% service fee on every non-Instacart Express order.
  • A sliding scale fee for alcohol purchases that varies based on how much alcohol you buy. For example, there is a $2 fee for alcohol orders up to $35 and a $10 fee for alcohol orders of $110 or more. These fees are reduced for Express members.
  • A default tip of 5% is added to every order but can be adjusted to your preference. Tips are always optional, and 100% of your tip goes to the shopper.

You may notice that your service fee changes between the time you make your order and the time your groceries are purchased. This is because the service fee is based on the total cost of the order and replacements can change that total slightly.

An Instacart Express annual membership costs $99. You can also purchase monthly memberships for $9.99 each month.

Instacart FAQ

Do you have to be home for Instacart delivery?
No. Instacart just rolled out a “leave at my door” delivery option. When you choose this option at checkout, the shopper leaves your groceries at the door, takes a photo and uploads the photo to the app so you know your order has arrived.
Does Instacart bring your groceries inside?
No. For safety reasons, shoppers leave your groceries in a predetermined place outside of your home.
Do you tip Instacart?
Yes. Tipping for great service is customary, and 100% of the tip goes to the shopper.
What stores can I order from on Instacart?
Available stores vary based on where you live. Instacart partners with Publix, Costco, CVS, The Fresh Market, Aldi, Kroger and many other popular grocery retailers.

Still have questions?

Is Instacart legit?

Instacart is a reputable business that provides a safe, convenient way to buy groceries without needing to visit stores. The service can be a game-changer for busy families — grocery shopping is a time-consuming errand, and having the ability to assign it to someone else frees up hours in your day. Instacart is a great option for those who dislike grocery shopping or want to spend their time doing something else. The fees are minimal, and regular Instacart members can upgrade to Instacart Express and reduce these fees even more.

I Have an ongoing issue as well with Instacart, and am saving all their ridiculous correspondence with me that are totally insulting. They offered me $10 after sending someone to my home who was only dispatched after I called saying my order was late... Then they sent me the ID photo of the person, and it was a different person...not the Instacart employee they sent me. So this means a total stranger now has my address & gate code. Then he was lost, and left my groceries at 7:30pm at some random outdoor location and left saying it was delivered. I text the driver as soon as I saw it, and he went back, picked up the food the was left unattended. Even though I told him I do not want food that was left somewhere outside in public where anyone or anything has access to it. He still came to my home and proceeded to bang on my door in the evening.

My delivery instruction are "leave at my front door, and do not knock or ring bell". He stayed over 5 minutes banging on the door, then another 5 minutes sitting in his car in front of my home which is set far back from the road and very secluded. Then drove away and left the groceries. Instacart has done nothing but offered me $10. What a joke. I asked to cancel my membership that was 3 months old. (I have been with them for 10 years.) And they said they cannot, I'd have to cancel within 5 days of renewal. I told them they are endangering my safety.

They said they will take that driver off MY shopper list...lol. What about the other people and how do they know who it is because it was not the person they sent me the ID photo and info of. And they boasted about the fact they credited the groceries. Lol. Like I was going to pay for something that was left at some random location first, then brought to me over an hour late by a total stranger they cannot identify???? Are they kidding me.??? The groceries went right into the garbage. This company is rapidly going down hill. They apparently have 0 customer service. What the hell does $10 do for me??? I am afraid to use them as they have no idea who they are sending to people's homes. Anyone interested in seeing the ridiculous correspondence, just let me know and I will post.

Because they are charging them more.🤷🏼‍♀️ Sparks is better and they pay their shoppers more.🤷🏼‍♀️ Instacart is ran by Indians!! I ordered on 7/14/26 & was promised delivery by 11pm. At 11:45 pm I texted the shopper saying it was too late and to cancel as I was unable to. No answer. According to Instacart, they messaged me at 2:57 am advising me my order would BE READY FOR PICKUP sometime around 9-9:30 am. I never ordered pickup AND the store was nowhere near me! Instacart CHOSE ANOTHER STORE FOR ME! I called Instacart & was told that the screenshots I took at every step of the ordering process didn't matter because the only thing that mattered was what they had on their screen. I was told I would be charged a $15 "inconvenience fee" even though none of this was my mistake.

I have a $50 Instacart gift card. For the past six months I have not been able to use the card because it won’t let me check out unless I add my own credit card. I have called them & asked them why & they said that’s it’s their policy in case you come up short money wise & I said you can look at my account & clearly see that I have a $50 credit & my grocery bill came to $35. They told me nevertheless it is their policy that we have to add a credit card so finally I said OK well, I’m never gonna get to use this gift card unless I do. What did they do? They charged my credit card for my groceries & did not use the gift card.

I called back & asked for a supervisor. He told me he was so sorry for the inconvenience. Would credit my credit card back and he promised me he would use my $50 Instacart credit. Well guess what, he used my credit card again. I then received an email saying there was nothing that Instacart could do to rectify my issue. And now I still have my $50 Instacart gift card on my Instacart account. These people are an abomination. They are absolute thieves. They are disgusting and putrid in every way. I will never get to use my $50 gift card that my friend took her hard earned money to buy for me. I will never use their disgusting app and I will never recommend their disgusting company to others.

Instacart has decayed into an absolute joke of a company. They have completely walled themselves off from accountability, systematically shutting down all functional customer service channels so consumers have no way to reach a human being with a pulse or a conscience. I called for a routine, simple inquiry to check a prepaid gift card balance. Instead of basic professionalism, I was subjected to immediate hostility, mocking, and pure arrogance from frontline phone staff who lacked basic communication skills. When I firmly requested a supervisor to escalate the issue, an agent identifying himself as "Richie" deliberately mocked me and hung up on my face. I called back, only to be met with the exact same abusive behavior and hung up on a second time.

To make matters worse, their standard support email is a dead end that sends an automated bounce-back message, deliberately trapping users in a broken app loop designed to exhaust you into giving up. They willingly take your money, hide your prepaid card balances behind broken firewalls, and hire aggressive, outsourced clowns who treat paying customers like garbage. This company is a sinking ship fueled by consumer exploitation and toxic frontline staff. Do not trust them with a single dime of your money. They don’t care about you, they don’t respect you, and their entire system is engineered to steal your time and sanity. Zero stars. Absolute trash.

Terrible customer service and absolute rip off. Never using it again. The shoppers don’t follow instructions. Total scam. I hope a competitor company follows.

This is the second time my delivery does not get delivered to the person. Very simple instructions not a hard pick up and delivery. The first one was to pick up some flowers from the nearest store and bring it to the patient room and they did not get delivered. I decided to give the benefit of the doubt and try again. The store was 200 feet from the place where it needs to be delivered and I gave specific detailed instructions so there could be no error in my delivery. Did not get delivered to the correct person and four days later I’m finding out and they tell me, "Oh we’re sorry. Our policy is three days." Do not use Instacart in the beginning. They were good. I didn’t have a problem but now they’re just dropping off deliveries to the first person they lay eyes on and their customer service sucks and so do the people that they’re hiring to make these deliveries. They are not doing what the customer is asking.

I am having issues lately that have have increased in frequency. We are supposed to have our replacement instructions followed as indicated. Our notes actually read. If we ask for a refund or the replacements we chose are also out of stock then make sure to check with me offering a replacement but if I have not agreed to your suggestion do not put it in my cart! If I request to check for freshness and expiration dates then do actually check before putting something in my cart. If you are uncertain, then show the item in question and wait for my response. If you do not hear back from me then do not put it in my cart.

If you think another location location has my out of stock item check with me 1st to make sure I still want it. Do not go get it and deliver it at my doorstep, doing the charge to my account without verifying that with me 1st! Once we received our initial delivery one assumes it safe to leave and get on with our day. Not to arrive back hours later to a bag of spoiled groceries on our doorstep. Especially if we had already gone and purchased our own replacement elsewhere! Let us know when you are about to check out to give us the opportunity to catch any mistakes or last minute changes to our order before it is too late, and you have checked out!

I cannot count the number of times I have tried to make adjustments to my order to be told I am too late to do so. It is especially frustrating especially when working on such a tight budget! Most importantly I do not want charges to my account refunded with store credit! I want it refunded as it was paid for! Nearly ALL of my shoppers have been wonderful! I am very grateful to them for their considerate assistance, and they do it with such kindness!
