What is Green Chef?

Green Chef is a meal subscription service that focuses on creating a healthy diet. Each Green Chef box contains sustainably sourced ingredients for ready-to-cook, restaurant-style meals. Green Chef’s ingredients are certified organic unless otherwise noted, and meals take about 30 minutes to make. Customers can choose from several meal plans that adhere to different diets, including balanced living, plant-based, ketogenic and paleo.

How does Green Chef work?

When you sign up for a subscription, you choose how many recipes are delivered in your weekly box. Each recipe is a complete meal with two to four servings, depending on your selection. Plans for two people include three or four meals per week, while those for four people include between two and four meals.

Each week you choose meals from your chosen plan to be delivered the following week. You can change meal plans from week to week or stick with your original choice. If you want to make changes or don't want to receive an upcoming box, you edit or opt to skip a delivery as long as it's done before the seven-day deadline. Customers can skip up to five weeks of orders at once. There's no penalty for skipping deliveries.

I got my first Green Chef order yesterday and could tell from the instant I saw my box that something inside was leaking. Someone had taped over the leaky spots at the top of the box. I unpacked everything in my fridge, got to the bottom and found that the extraneous liquid was not due to the ice packs thawing, as I had hoped/assumed, but a package of raw chicken openly leaking. The juices had flowed from the bottom of the box to the top, where the fresh ingredients were located. It was a disgusting mess, I had to sanitize my floor and fridge, repackage things to avoid contaminating my fridge, and try to decide what would be safe to eat and what to toss.

I emailed them later to let them know, and they were not incredibly concerned—they even asked to see photos, as if I had paused for a photo shoot while remediating the salmonella bomb they shipped me. Luckily I had gotten this box free as a deal, but I had to email back and ask for the shipping fee back. I was left without meals I had planned on feeding my fam and I had to sanitize my kitchen. Look elsewhere, I’d stay away from Green Chef.

It’s a bad plan when the company doesn’t give instructions to put the meal bags in the fridge, one guess as to what happens. We understand that the meats need to be frozen/refrigerated but nowhere are there instructions to put the bags in the fridge too. It got delivered while we were gone and our kids put it away and I couldn’t be mad because they had no instruction. SMH

I was looking for a meal kit service and wanted to check out Green Chef, liked the look of the service but had to "join" in order to see menus. I joined, and saw that they assigned me a week's worth of meals that didn't suit my diet. It was hard to see the other options, but when I finally did, few of them were what I was looking for. So I immediately tried to cancel. The only way to do that was to "Deactivate" my account, which I did. It was after office hours so there was no one to call. I immediately checked my Pay Pal account to make sure there was no charge.

Today, 5 days later, a charge appeared. Went back to the website where I found a help message saying that if you were charged for your first order even if you cancelled you could just call a number and they would help. Called, and was told that there was nothing they could do. The agent said they had sent me an email with instructions I had to follow in case I wanted to cancel the account. But the email in question only referred me back to the website where I had already deactivated the account. So despite the fact that I never actually placed an order, they are sending the preassigned meal (none of which I can use since I don't eat meat) and the charge on my account remain. To say that this a is totally unacceptable way to do business is a gross understatement!

I ordered from Green Chef the first box was delivered to the wrong address and the second box they claim did not have my apt. # I did provide it. They will not give me a refund (over $80.00 or send me replacement boxes. I have called them 4 times - there is never a supervisor available. I am a senior and cannot afford to be out this money. I never had this problem with any other food delivery co.

The vegetables were wilty, brown and slimy. Truly organic, who knows. The receipts were bland, but salty. Takes more than salt to season a meal. I canceled my subscription after 2 weeks, due to poor quality, and yet the 3rd week I received a box, I did not want. Customer service refused to issue a refund, because my subscription took 5 days to cancel, which meant it cancelled on my delivery date. Joe-whoever in customer service apologized, but did nothing more to help get a credit. BUYER BEWARE, STAY AWAY. Plus there are NO single person meal options.

In order to see meals you have to enter credit card which automatically enrolls you in subscription. I never even selected a single item and evidentially just because I logged in, the first box was apparently ordered and my credit card was charged. I called and explained that I hadn't ordered anything and was told that I can't cancel or get a refund. They are sending me food that I didn't choose, which happens to be food that I don't even eat and now I have to pay for it. It is a total scam. Do not log into their website unless you want to get food sent to you that you don't even get to choose.

They will make you enter info to get to look at the meals they offer. Once you do that you are screwed! I saw the meals and said no not for me then hit deactivate to ensure no unwanted food or charges.. Well now I'm being told their computers run the show and they have no control over them. They cannot refund and will be shipping multiple orders I never ordered! STAY AWAY!! Customer service is terrible, rude and liars! Literally stole my hard earned money.

I used Green Chef for 5 months. It started OK but increasingly orders were missing ingredients, ingredients were low value and when the inevitable huge cost increase came, I deactivated my order. Yet they still sent me another box. Customer service claims they need a full week before my deactivation "takes". This of course is baloney, in the age of electronics it is a simple matter to send a cancel order request. The customer service rep was rude and was at one point shouting at me. This company was initially promising, but it really let me down. Recommend avoiding.

The absolute worst. Hello Fresh owns Green Chef. In order to see meals you have to enter credit card which automatically enrolls you in subscription. Despite canceling subscription within minutes...the first box was apparently ordered? I discovered when my credit card is charged. Called and explained confusion and wanting to cancel order that has not been shipped. Can't cancel or get a refund. Told a manager will call me back in 30-60 minutes. Waited almost two hours. Had same conversation. Insisted I talk to someone now. Rep tells me he is transferring me to his supervisor and hangs up the call. SCAM. There is already a class action suit in progress for this kind of thing. Gross. Already filed complaint with BBB. Will now shout from the rooftops so as many people know as possible.

I joined Green Chef because I need to eat better and healthier, and it was recommended by my friend who stated it was really good and she and her husband enjoyed it. Since I am only cooking for my husband and me nowadays this seems like the most sensible and financially smart thing to do. Plus it eliminates the amount of food waste I usually have. My first order was ok, I received the preselected meals from the vegan/vegetarian section, but I noticed that most of them had nuts as a part of the ingredients. Granted I did not have to add the nuts into the meals and they were packaged separately. But I don't like taking chances.

So, last week I purposely went through the meal selections and selected different meals for this week only to received the meals that were pre-selected, which all have nuts in them. So, I essentially paid over $100 for meals that I cannot eat. Customer service was unhelpful, "oh, I'm sorry, but the website doesn't allow you to make changes after 5 days before shipment". A complete lie! The first thing you see when you sign into your account is the button to either change the selection or hold the upcoming week. Needless to say, I have deactivated my account.
