First Citizens Bank was originally founded as the Bank of Smithfield in North Carolina. In 2022, it merged with CIT to become one of the 20 largest banks in the U.S. Today, First Citizens Bank is owned and operated by the Holding family, which has a long history in the banking industry. In March, 2023, First Citizens Bank entered into an agreement with the FDIC to acquire the failed Silicon Valley Bank.
