Read full reviewWhat is Whitmore?
Whitmore School is an accredited online high school that offers self-paced learning options, including programs for adults. Its mastery-based curriculum lets you move from subject to subject at your own pace — for instance, if English comes easier to you than math, you can breeze through literature and have more time for math. Whitmore has no due dates and a 17:1 student-to-teacher ratio, and its diplomas are recognized by higher learning institutions.
How does Whitmore work?
All Whitmore programs offer one-to-one time with instructors, self-paced work and transferable credits. You can choose from either a General Studies or College Prep track, depending on your post-graduation goals. Whitmore has open enrollment, so you can enroll at any time of the year. Whitmore offers four diploma tracks:
- Diploma: Includes a personalized graduation plan from your guidance counselor and access to a student support coach, but parents are responsible for following their students’ schedule and progress
- Diploma PLUS: Includes additional support from a counselor, monthly detailed progress reports and extra credits, so it might be a better option for parents who want a bit more support
- Diploma PLUS with College Advisor: Offers additional guidance support and a personal college advisor to assist with all aspects of applying to college, from research and writing the college application essay to searching for scholarships and requesting recommendations
- Adult Education Diploma: For adult students who are returning to school to earn a high school diploma; includes a personalized graduation plan, and students can set their schedule around their other commitments outside school
Whitmore School also offers a la carte curriculum support options to students enrolled full time in any of its diploma programs, including:
- YUP Math Tutoring: Includes 24/7, on-demand, one-to-one access to math tutoring through Stanford-based YUP
- Everydae SAT Prep: Includes access to online challenges to prepare for the SAT. On average, students who prepare for 10 minutes per day see an increase of 200 points on their SAT, according to the company.
Whitmore School cost
Whitmore prices start at $1,699 yearly for the Diploma and Adult Education Diploma programs. Diploma PLUS is $2,199 annually or $2,595 per year with College Advisor. Those who pay in full, as well as military families, first responders and siblings, can get discounts. You can also enroll in a payment plan, which splits the total cost over seven months. If you’d prefer to take individual classes, the cost is $475 per credit.

Our child is struggling with social anxiety and we took her out of high school and looked around online. We liked Whitmore the most out of the things that we saw. We like the parental feature set to be able to monitor our child's progress. Their staff and orientation were very welcoming. Our child liked the most the courses and things that they had as electives. The price was a good fit as well so we went with it.
We enrolled our child in January and the process was very simple. We weren't sure how everything was supposed to work such as transferring records and everything. But they gave us information. It looked like a standard copy-paste kind of thing, like go to your school, ask for this, and send it here. We did that. Our school was giving us a hard time and they didn't want to give up their student. We heard from Whitmore that they reached out and took care of it for us and everything was set. It was really easy.
Whitmore was extremely responsive. There are a few teachers that teach in different time zones. One was the math tutor that we had during the first elective of the year. They travel the world so it was interesting. We couldn't get a response from them immediately like we have everybody else. But they did always respond within a day. We went on vacation for a week and our child didn't do any work for that vacation. They reached out to us and said, “Hey, your child hasn't been doing anything for a week. You might wanna check in with them.” That was nice that they reached out to us when there was that situation where our child was far behind.
Our child signed up for quite a few classes. She's taking the basics right now. She takes two at a time. She answers all the stuff and moves on to the next courses. There's a total of six that are considered for the school year. It's all self-paced. Our child would struggle and it pushes her back. When it is history-related, our kid really loves that. They dig into it and give all their sources and regurgitate all the information that they've learned. That can take time, too, for them to put everything down that they've learned. The things that Whitmore has brought up, especially about history were things I've never even either paid attention to or knew about. It was pretty cool.
Overall, from the side of us being able to monitor our child's work, to the communication that they're having with the faculty, to helping them and getting responses from not only their counselor but everybody there from their administrative side, it's just been super easy. It's way easier than even our local high school was.

Thank you for your review Erik. Your daughter is doing great, so glad she is enjoying Whitmore School!!

I would like to take a moment to share my family's experience with the Whitmore School. To be clear, this is school done online from home, not necessarily a "home school program". My wife and I never taught them any subject. From the very beginning, we knew we made the right decision with our kids. Our kids did not care about a traditional high school experience. They wanted to be able to trade that for an experience that allowed them to pursue a parallel path in Performing Arts. The curriculum and flexibility around the schedule allowed them to do just that. However, we were also allowed to grow as a family unit by taking trips throughout the year more frequently and spend more time with each other.
The self paced program was intimidating at first but what a life skill they acquired as a result. The days of procrastinating their school work was in the rearview mirror very quick. The classes were all challenging and the mastery was something that 100% helped our kids. Math and Science were a struggle but was made so much easier when they could stop, rewind videos and figure out concepts vs raising your hand uncomfortably in a class room. Overall, they benefited from a deeper learning experience. The math tutoring program was also a game changer.
I also cannot say enough about every staff member at Whitmore. They care deeply about the student experience and more about the big picture. They have a firm understanding of what the high school balance should look like. They have been a true partner every step of the way. Our family has been graciously impacted by this program and we are forever indebted to the team at Whitmore. I hope others can find them and see first hand how beneficial they can be.

We also appreciate your kind words regarding our staff. We all try to have the students interest come first so that they can be as successful as possible.

We did online schooling for student safety. We did some virtual open houses with some schools and we liked what Whitmore was offering and it was a legitimate program. We liked the way that they had everything set up. There was a parent dashboard as well as a student dashboard and our student has access to the tools that he needs to succeed. We really liked the asynchronous portion of it as well. My child can do school whenever he wants to do it and it doesn't have to be between certain set hours. He can go right in the middle of the night if he wants to. We love that. His credits are going to be transferred in from his other school and will get him that diploma at the end of his high school year. We liked the cost too as it wasn't that bad.
When our son was in the brick-and-mortar school, he had A's and B's. He's doing better now in Whitmore and has straight A's. He's not being distracted by outside influences or the social stuff that happens in a brick-and-mortar school. He's definitely much happier in this environment. He's at home more but he has the flexibility that he can work his job whenever he wants to. He comes and goes and gets his stuff done.
He's been in contact with his teachers every day that he's working, but it's via email. If he needs help, he can email his teacher right away and the teacher usually responds pretty quickly. I have also seen some teachers respond to him at midnight or 3:00 in the morning. The teachers are all over the globe so some of them are out in different countries with different time zones. As far as us, we don't talk to the teachers directly. But we have access to the guidance counselor. If we have any issues or anything that we want to talk to about our son's schooling, we just go through the guidance counselor and they handle that for us. We've been pretty happy with the response rate as well. It's been great.
Whitmore works well for my son. We went from a life-and-death situation to a smiling happy kid who's getting straight A's and thriving. It might not be like that for everyone. We have another child and we know this setup would never work for her because she's so social. She needs to be out and about. But in our son's case, Whitmore really saved his life. It's a really good school. With everything that's happening these days, Whitmore is a fantastic alternative to a traditional school. My kid is so freaking smart. He tells me all these things he's learning and he's really engaged. That's gonna take him far if he decides to go to college and continue his education.

You mentioned your daughter may not have the same experience because of how social she is. My daughter attended Whitmore School and she did very well. She made a schedule of set times for her school work and she also had plenty of time to work part-time and be part of a competitive dance group. She was able to travel with the dance group and do her school work in the hotel when she had time.
Thank you,

We like that Whitmore is accredited. We also like their schooling options. There are so many online schools now but Whitmore's program offered honors classes which we found a lot of free schools and even some of the ones that cost money didn't offer. Our daughter's in her sophomore year right now. For her junior and senior year, one of the things they offer in the more elevated program is help with college tests. Some of the programs that we know offered good classes, but you had to log in so many times a week or so many times a day and that minimized things because our daughter was having a baby and we didn't know when that was going to happen. With Whitmore, we like the flexibility of the schedule, the classes and the other things that they offer.
My daughter likes that her teachers are engaged with her when she starts the class. That feels less isolating for somebody that's stuck at home. They ask her who she is as a person and how she's doing. She can tell them why she's choosing online school and what's going on in her life. That feels much more personal. Even though it is just at the beginning of the class and it seems simple, that makes a huge difference.
I would definitely recommend Whitmore. It's been a great experience and we wanna stick with the program. All of her teachers are great. She just has one teacher whose response time seems a little all over the place. It's a reflection on the school in a way because that's their employee. There'll be a couple of times where he's very responsive for math and it is one of her harder classes she's in for a sophomore. She's in trigonometry and precalculus. But 95% of the time, it's days, so it's dragging out this class. It is a time limit when you sign up. She could complete it early, but she has 12 months to complete everything. That's been an added stress level. She reached out to her counselor and has tried to say a couple of times, "I'm trying to finish this class. How can I get my teacher to respond faster?" I don't know if her counselor misunderstood her email, but her counselor asked, "Do you want to drop the class?" She was not trying to drop the class. She just wants her teacher to respond to her.

Thank you Christina for your thoughtful review. Our teachers do reach out to their students and try to get to know them. The relationships that develop are very important for the students success.
When my daughter attended Whitmore School, she said she got to know her teachers here much more here than at her local high school.
I want to thank you for your feedback regarding one of our Math Teachers. We do monitor their response time and coach them to be prompt with their feedback. Our Math Department Chair is currently working with this specific teacher the issue will be resolved.Thank you,

I love Whitmore. I am one of their adult learners because when I was in high school, I got really sick and had to withdraw from public school. I couldn't afford treatment at that time for my illnesses, so I never got to finish high school. So, now that I got treatment a couple of years ago, and I'm doing much better, and I get the option to do high school, but sort of traditional way, and not go from a GED but take courses, earn credits, learn, and build a transcript to apply to colleges. I’m so grateful that they have that opportunity. It's amazing.
I like their idea of mastery learning. They allow you to learn, and there's a time and place to make mistakes and to get things wrong, and to revise, and learn from your mistakes before you actually send in a submission or an assignment that you're proud of and that you know you've completed to the best of your ability. I loved doing things online. It’s very convenient. Everything is at your own pace and in your own time. You can make it work with your schedule, your hobbies, your family, and your work. I also work at a Mathnasium, which is like a Math Learning Center where I'm a tutor. So, I can change my hours to make it work with my work, and with my other extracurriculars like studying for the SAT. You’re not fixed into a strict schedule, which is great.
In this day and age, with the public school system and how it is in so many different districts across the country, a lot of students are falling behind because the system is not set up to be catered to individuals. So, don't hesitate. Go and get an individualized experience at Whitmore. They're going to cater to you and your strengths and help you with your weaknesses.

Thank you for your great review Amber! We really do cater to the individual student and help them learn as much as possible. You are doing great, keep up the solid effort.

Whitmore works for some kids, but it doesn't for others. For somebody who's very quick and tests really well, it's gonna be amazing. It just isn't that for a kid who already struggles in school. The process has been incredibly slow, including getting feedback from the teachers, and there's no predetermined lesson. There's a syllabus, but there's no video of, "This is what we're gonna cover today." It went like, "You can go source these things to learn more about this."
Whitmore worked amazing for my neighbor's daughter who was in high school and going to community college, and needed some extra classes finished. For her, she was very motivated. On the other hand, my daughter was anxious about going to a very busy public school last year. That's why we said, "Oh, well, maybe this is a good fit," but the lack of a deadline for things was not a good fit for my daughter. She has one class yet to finish, and her new school starts next week. It took her a year to do a semester's worth of class, because of the amount of revision she had to do or the lack of guidance.
My daughter's guidance counselor was easy for that career guidance class, but she needed some kind of one-on-one feedback that we were hoping we would get. I wound up having to spend, unfortunately, thousands of dollars in tutors just to be able to meet with somebody every single week. I got tutors in every single class, because there was no communication with the teacher, other than just say, "You need to resubmit." It was not like they gave the students back a marked up version. Math by yourself is already hard, and when you really don't like math, it's nearly impossible.

Whitmore was easily accessible, user-friendly, and accredited to all public schools. The enrollment process was very simple. Everything was done online. Once you get enrolled into the school, a counselor speaks to your child and makes sure that the plan that they're going to do is what they're wanting to do. It's also very inexpensive for what I am paying for. I feel like I'm getting a whole lot for how much it costs.
The learning experience was very easy. Any questions my child has, she just texts or emails them. We have an entire full 12 months to finish the school year. Some weeks, she'll do six days a week, and then other weeks, she can do two or three depending on how busy she is with sports or vacation or other things going on. She can do it at any time of the day, morning, noon, night, Sunday. It's literally just whenever she feels like it.

Thank you for your 5 Star Review Brittany! So glad your daughter is finding success at Whitmore School. You are right, freedom to do her school work when she wants to is wonderful.

I attended Whitmore for all four years of high school, and I loved every minute of it! Though this school is completely remote, I feel like I really got to know my teachers and guidance counselor personally; everyone is super friendly and helpful! As a self-motivated student, the structure of Whitmore's classes really worked well for me. The flexibility of the classes gave me the freedom to make my own schedule every day and have a life beyond high school.
I loved their mastery learning approach, as it allows each student to do their best and truly learn the material, rather than focusing on cramming for tests or worrying about deadlines. Because of the online environment, most socialization will be done outside of school, but this did not bother me in the slightest. I believe Whitmore is ideal for anyone looking for an alternative schooling option that provides quality education and freedom. I am truly grateful to Whitmore for making high school such a fun and rewarding experience, all while thoroughly preparing me for college and life after school!

Well Hana, if that's not the best student endorsement ever written, I don't know what is. Your transcript is very impressive as well, Straight A's!!
Thank you for your wonderful Review!!

I was very fortunate to find Whitmore School for my son. While attending boarding school out of state my son suddenly lost his Father at the end of his Junior year. Following his Father's death, my son decided that he wanted to be close to home but did not want to attend the very large public school that he left in favor of a small academically-oriented boarding school. Whitmore School provided a distance learning solution that offered academic rigor, personal instruction and involvement in a self-paced environment that allowed my son to succeed with geographic independence.
I highly recommend that parents consider Whitmore School for traditional or non-traditional students. Whitmore faculty and instructors are excellent. They invest time and care with each student individually during all classes. The administrative staff is responsive, knowledgeable, and very helpful during the college application process. Whitmore School was a blessing for my son and for my family. I highly recommend consideration of Whitmore School for all its lasting benefits.

Thank you for your wonderful review and recommendation to all the other parents searching for an online school. Our self-paced program helps our students achieve academic success.

Whitmore was the perfect fit for our motivated daughter. All of her teachers were dedicated to providing personal guidance and support that is not always found in a traditional high school. Her guidance counselor was with her throughout the duration helping our daughter navigate her way through High school and prepare her for the collage road ahead. Our daughter is leaving Whitmore with the confidence and pride that will launch her on her way to a very bright future!

Thank you Anne for your 5 Star Review! So pleased to hear your daughter enjoyed her teachers. I will make sure her Guidance Counselor knows how pleased she is.
