What is American Dream Auto Protect?

American Dream Auto Protect is an auto warranty company offering three customizable levels of coverage for new and pre-owned vehicles (most qualifying vehicles were made in 2000 or later). In the event of a covered breakdown, American Dream Auto Protect will work directly with a mechanic to ensure your vehicle gets the repairs it needs.

American Dream Auto Protect has a nationwide network of over 50,000 ASE-certified mechanics, and it offers 24/7 customer service.

How does American Dream Auto Protect work?

With American Dream Auto Protect, you have the ability to choose one of its three standard plan options or customize coverage to fit your needs. Its customer service team can help you navigate your options to find a coverage plan that makes sense for you and your vehicle.

Once you’re enrolled in coverage, your vehicle is covered against certain breakdowns that result from regular use. That means, should a covered item break or malfunction, American Dream Auto Protect will pay to repair or replace it, as long as the cost falls within your coverage limit.

Once you call American Dream Auto Protect’s customer service department, they will connect you to one of the over 50,000 ASE-certified mechanics in the company’s network. You’ll need to pay a deductible, but otherwise the cost of repairing or replacing the broken component(s) is covered up to the limit listed in your contract. American Dream Auto Protect works directly with the mechanic shop for payment.

American Dream Auto Protect plans and coverage

American Dream Auto Protect offers three standard plan options (Silver, Gold and Platinum), plus the ability to customize coverage to your needs.

All plans also include a cancellation option, a monthly payment plan, free towing/rental cars/roadside assistance and a money-back guarantee.

» MORE: Pros and cons of extended auto warranties

American Dream Auto coverage limits

American Dream Auto Protect doesn’t provide specific limits on what sorts of vehicles it will cover, but it does say that most vehicles it covers are from the year 2010 or later. This is a few years older than what many car warranty providers allow, so American Dream Auto Protect may be a good option if you’re looking to cover an older vehicle.

We reached out to American Dream Auto Protect for a sample contract, and under the terms of that contract:

  • The maximum payout for a single repair is the current trade-in value of your vehicle.
  • The maximum total payout for all repairs is either what you paid for the vehicle or whatever your vehicle’s trade-in value was at the time you purchased your coverage plan — whichever is lower.

However, these details can differ on the actual contract you sign, so it’s smart to read your contract thoroughly and make sure you understand the limits of your coverage before you sign up.

American Dream Auto Protect cost

American Dream Auto Protect doesn’t publish prices for its auto warranty plans, but that’s not uncommon in the car warranty industry. To find out how much one of its extended auto warranties will cost you, you’ll have to fill out its online form for a free quote.

Once you submit this form, one of American Dream Auto Protect’s representatives will reach out to you within 24 hours with pricing information.

This form will require you to provide some personal information as well as your car’s:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Age
  • Mileage

It’s also worth mentioning that, at the time of publishing, American Dream Auto Protect offers discounts for covering multiple vehicles, and all plans include a free first month of service.

Can I choose my own repair shop with American Dream Auto Protect?

Is an American Dream Auto Protect warranty transferable?

Yes, most of American Dream Auto Protect’s contracts are transferable in the event you sell your vehicle to another person. However, it’s worth checking the terms of your contract to be sure before you sign.

How long has American Dream Auto Protect been in business?

American Dream Auto Protect was founded in 2008.

Is American Dream Auto Protect worth it?

American Dream Auto Protect offers a range of coverage options and some helpful benefits, like towing, 24/7 customer service and a large network of mechanics. However, it doesn’t publish information on pricing or coverage limits on its website, so you have to work with a salesperson to learn those critical details. This can make comparison-shopping between companies more of a headache, but it might be worth it if the terms of your contract and price quote are to your liking.

Forbes rated American Dream really high, and Sabrina, their rep was excellent. Although she said the deductible would be $100, but it turned out it's 150, which is kinda huge. Also, I've made a claim and I'm very disappointed about that. My mechanic called the company, and I think it took one or two days to even get a response. But they sent me an email saying where to email the work order, and then my mechanic sent it in, and then they said they didn't have it. So I sent it in, and then while I was on the phone, I made sure they got it right away. I was told it would be 24 to 48 hours before there would be an approval, and it was a late Friday morning, and I was like, “Really? So how long will that be? Does that include weekends?”

The rep was like, “No. It's Monday to Friday. Probably, it'll try to be Monday at the latest, so it would be all of Friday and then all of Monday.” Late Monday, I got an email that said an inspector would be going to the mechanic’s shop within 24 to 48 hours to inspect the car. I was like, “What?” That was more days. I've been out of my car for now way over a week, and then I was told that I wouldn't be able to be confident about rental reimbursement. When I was sold on the policy, it was that I would have rental car coverage, but it wasn't explained that I would have to pay for the rental car and then get reimbursed afterwards. If I don't have any money and I need my car or a rental car, that's an issue too.

It was Thursday and I was like, “Oh, my gosh. So I haven't received an approval yet, and this has been since Friday that I sent the work estimate in.” It's the first time that I've had a claim, so I can sort of understand why someone needs to inspect it first because they got to be sure they're not being cheated. However, if that's the kind of policy that's in place, which is okay, then that policy needs to be triggered immediately at the beginning of the claim, so the 24 to 48 hours includes the inspection and not the end of the 24 to 48 hours when you're supposed to have an approval or you're promised an approval that that would be the answer one way or another. Then you have to wait another 24 to 48 hours for an inspector to come out, and that adds even more time whether you get an actual response.

Also, my welcome email when I got the policy said, “Oh, congratulations. Welcome. I will take care of you. We're available to you 24/7.” I called to check on my claim at 8 p.m. a couple nights ago, and the guy that answered the phone had a facetious attitude, and when I called the phone number, it gave me the option to talk to the customer service. When I push option 3, that would bring me to customer service. So I pressed option 3, and when I got to him, he answered very friendly. “So, will I be helping you with new service today?” I said, “Well, no. I'm trying to get ahold of customer service.” He was like, “Oh, well, then you'll need to call during regular business hours.” It was as if in a friendly but facetious manner. It was really insulting. I told him, “Well, I'm trying to get an update on my claim, and my welcome email for this policy said that y'all are available 24/7.”

He said, “Well, not for anything like that, Only if you want to get new service. Then we're available for you 24/7.” It was in a fake cheerful way like I was talking to a cheerleader that thinks you're beneath them. So I was like, “Well, my welcome email said 24/7, so let me understand this. The only thing that's 24/7 availability is that if I were to buy a new car warranty policy.” He said, “Yeah, I guess so. Yes, that's true.” I said, “Okay. Well, that's not what my welcome email says, so that's disappointing.” He was like, “Okay. Well, you'll have to call them during regular business hours when they are open.”

I'm more available in the evenings, so it's not 24/7 and when it's best for me. Other than that, I really like Sabrina and the person that helped me break down the second half of the policy payment. I paid for half of it, and then the total of my second half of the policy payment will be paid in six payments. That guy, Calvin, was very friendly. Sabrina's incredible. I love her. She's so friendly and patient, willing to spend a lot of time on details and call me back when I can't call or can't talk, and I was sold to without feeling sold to, which is great.

I put my automobile in the shop on the 7th. I didn't know we had to wait on somebody to come out and inspect the vehicle, which I had no problem with ‘cause there's so much fraud going on. They were supposed to send out the inspector, but supposedly, he couldn't find the place so they had to deal with another inspector. The mechanic told me all he did was come out and make a video, which I can understand. That way, they can see what's getting repaired. But it still took him a couple of days to file a report on my car.

When I got ready to get my car out of the shop, they wanted me to pay with a credit card. I informed them that I would pay in cash. I paid the whole bill and it took them three weeks to send me my money. The bill was $2,200, and they only paid 1,400. I paid for six years, 70,000 miles, at once. The bank had canceled the card that I had paid it on and issued me a new card. American Dream didn't wanna send the payment to my new card. I had to wait on them to send me a check. I was without my car for three weeks. I could have rented a car but I didn't wanna pay $50 a day. I was thinking they should be calling the company American Nightmare ‘cause it took so long. I was thinking about getting another car and if I do, I don't know if I would want a service plan with American Dream or not. But I got a excellent customer service on the phone as far as dealing with the people.

It was easy to get signed up with American Dream Auto Protect. The guy was informative. Also, I got what I was looking for, which was the full coverage. However, I tried to file a claim and it was rejected. I took my car to the BMW dealer. They said, "You got American Dream?" I said, "Yeah." And they said, "That's not good. They don't pay for anything." So I said, "Go ahead and file the claim and see." American Dream insisted on the BMW dealer to send in documentation. They hung on to it for a few days, came back and said, "No. We're not paying for any of it." Which did not surprise the person that was assigned to me at the BMW dealer. She informed me that that has been the case with other claims that she has tried to make with American Dream.

The repair involved a strut. A strut is like a shock. When I went through and read the fine print on the program with American Dream, I understand that a strut is something that's similar to a tire or a battery. And it's something that will wear out. It's not a repair item. The BMW dealer thought it should have been covered. I was disappointed.

Dealing with American Dream Auto Protect's agent was good. I thought the problem with my car was something with a computer issue like a monitor. It was electrical. There are a lot of computer modules in that car. And it showed an issue with the chassis. It was a problem with the strut. But after the BMW rep told me that these guys were difficult and knowing that it was a strut and looking at the fine print and thinking, "Okay. Well, that's gonna be a gray area. So they're probably not gonna cover it.” Sure enough, they wouldn't. The BMW rep said, "You got to go back and try to get your money back." I'm not gonna do that because I wanna have the plan. I don't know if they would give me my money back. They said they would, but I don't know they would. I got the feeling that they might be a little sketchy. I wish I had done more research.

Down the road, if I have another claim, which is legitimate and they reject that, because I believe with my policy, I can switch it to a different vehicle that I own and try to get a different policy. BMW offered me a policy which was a bit more expensive. But after my experience with American Dream, I wish I took the BMW coverage. I'm not totally dissatisfied. It just wasn't successful with the first claim.

Samuel, the sales rep, was very knowledgeable. He knew the car and was more than willing to go the extra distance to make the sale. There was no hard sell. It was because of him and the service that he gave that I ended up going with American Dream. The sign-up process was very easy. It was all done over the phone and online with confirmation. Then, I got hard copies by email of the agreement. Plus, I have the direct number to my service representative, should I need him. This extended warranty contract was to replace the one that I had for the last three years with General Motors that had expired. So I was looking to replace it with a similar program. American Dream had marketed that they were participating with the GM program and when I called and they saw the car was a Cadillac, they switched me over to what they call the Cadillac division, which was how I ended up with Samuel.

The other thing that was very big on my list was that American Dream is using original parts on the car and dealing with the dealers. I have this car serviced at the dealer who sold me the car and I'm very big on using original parts on this vehicle. American Dream has a feature where you can cancel it at any time. So if they don't meet my needs or my dealer has issues with them and that gets back to me, that would be a very big negative to me. So I would very clearly give that high consideration to how things go with them.

I haggled a little bit on the price because American Dream came in a little bit higher. After a discussion, they were able to bring it down a bit. My only complaint is that they don't have an extended payment plan available. They offered four payments, which for a $3,200 policy because I got a platinum policy, is a steep amount for a month, whereas in my other company, you pay this out over two years and was considerably cheaper. So, they gave me the extra mileage coverage. They dropped my deductible because my other company didn't have a deductible and then strung it out six payments. So it took the sting out a little bit more. They were willing to work with me.

I had a very good experience with sales and marketing. Once we agreed, everything was done very quickly and smoothly. The website just took a little bit of orientation. American Dream was very good about communication. I get an email from them every month confirming my payment has been made and I've got that from my records. They've got the credit card, so they directly bill it so that's a good thing. I don't have to go hunting around asking them for receipts.

I talked to a gentleman at first. He came up with a high number which I couldn't afford because I'm on a fixed income. Within a couple of hours later, another gentleman by the name of Jacob called me and was able to get it down to where I could afford it. I went with him because I only had to pay this high amount for five months, and I would be done with paying them at that point. I hope not to use American Dream Auto Protect, but it's good to know. It's like auto insurance. I got it just because I have to have it just in case. And by me being retired, I don't make a lot of money coming back in and I can't work. So, I said, "Let me do something to be safe than sorry."

When I talked to Jacob, he gave me everything that I needed to know. He reassured me that everything will be covered under my car. It is a high-end car and that all will be under coverage. He was able to work with me as far as the payment was concerned, which I appreciated a lot. He sent me an email telling me everything that was listed. And I got something in the mail within a couple of days later stating everything that he said.

The only thing I had a problem was with American Dream specify that I gotta have an ASE mechanic. Other than that, I like the deductible, which is $100. I thought that was really great. I thought the billing was really great. I thought the rental car was really great. From what I've seen-- I mean, like I said before, I haven't used it at all because I don't have no reason to, but I did see those things on there that I did like, because another company, they wanted a higher deductible and you guys didn't.

I had my 2019 Ford Expedition Limited covered with American Dream last December and it was easy signing up. I paid 170 to sign up. Some warranties are better in terms of not having a deductible. After paying the companies all this money, you’re gonna have to pay something else out of pocket when you have a problem. Granted if it's a large ticket item, it's well worth it. But I'm not sure if it's something that's not catastrophic that you could do without if you had to. Even for minor repairs, I might still need to pay a deductible of $100 or more, which makes me question the overall return on investment of the warranty. I’ll be filing a claim soon. There’s something wrong with the screen that takes care of what channel you wanna listen to. It’s slow. You click on it and it won’t move. It doesn't do anything so, you'll hit it again and then it finally catches up. The guy said it probably needs an update on the software.
