What is CarShield?

CarShield offers vehicle service contracts for new and used vehicles, including motorcycles, ATVs and cars with up to 300,000 miles. Purchasing a CarShield vehicle service contract can provide significant peace of mind for owners looking for extended coverage. The company has six contract options, all of which are available on a month-to-month basis, so you aren’t locked into a long-term commitment.

Contracts are available both in English and Spanish. Most warranties are transferable. All CarShield plans also include access to a customer app that allows you to manage your plan, request 24-hour roadside assistance and get exclusive rewards.

How does CarShield work?

CarShield provides extended auto warranties to protect you against the costs of unforeseen breakdowns. When you need a repair completed, bring your vehicle to an ASE-certified repair facility and file a claim.

Make sure to read the terms and conditions of your contract so you fully understand what CarShield covers. Contracts are available in English and Spanish. Most CarShield contracts are also transferable, meaning the warranty can still cover the car even if you sell it.

Additional CarShield benefits include towing, roadside assistance and rental cars, as well as app access and a map locator for ASE-certified repair facilities.

How to file a claim with CarShield

To file a claim with CarShield, take your vehicle to an in-network repair shop, provide your coverage details to the service manager and let them contact the CarShield claims center. If your vehicle is not functional, you can call roadside assistance to arrange for towing to a repair shop. The shop will handle the claim process from there.

Here’s a step-by-step process for filing a claim with CarShield:

  1. Find a network repair shop. CarShield has a network of thousands of repair shops in the U.S. and Canada. You can visit any ASE-certified mechanic or dealership. You can also search for a local in-network repair center at shieldrepairnetwork.com or call 800-852-2502 for assistance.
  2. Take your vehicle to the shop. If your car is functional, bring it to any network shop in your area. If not, call roadside assistance at 866-222-7869 for towing, which is included in all of CarShield’s contracts.
  3. Provide your contract. After diagnosing the problem, but before performing any work, give your contract to the service manager or certified technician.
  4. Allow the repair shop to handle the claim. The shop will contact the CarShield claims department directly. The claims administrator will determine what is covered under your plan.
  5. Get approval. Once CarShield approves your claim, it will directly pay the repair facility. You will be responsible for paying your deductible and any costs not approved or covered by your contract.

If your contract comes with rental car benefits, CarShield will provide a rental through Enterprise while your vehicle is being fixed. Some plans may be eligible for rideshare reimbursement instead of a rental car.

Compare CarShield coverage plans

Motorcycle plans cover the engine, transmission, drive axle, starter, alternator, power windows, fuel pump, radiator, fuel injector, electrical components, brakes, instrument cluster and NAV/backup camera.

The above table contains only the largest or most popular covered items, so each plan likely includes other parts. For more details on what exactly each plan covers, talk to a CarShield representative.

What isn't covered?

CarShield's vehicle service contracts exclude several items and scenarios across all plans:

  • Wear-and-tear items: Brake pads, tires, wiper blades, filters, belts, hoses, bulbs, batteries
  • Routine maintenance: Oil changes, fluid flushes, alignments, tuneups, spark plugs
  • Cosmetic damage: Paint, upholstery, trim, body panels, rust, dents, scratches
  • Preexisting conditions: Issues present before coverage begins
  • Negligence-related issues: Damage from lack of maintenance, misuse, unauthorized modifications
  • Environmental damage: Floods, fires, hail, earthquakes, animal damage, vandalism, theft
  • Unauthorized repairs: Work done without prior approval, repairs at non-ASE-certified shops

CarShield cost

CarsShield plans typically cost between $110 and $170 per month. Rates depend on your coverage level, the deductible, and the vehicle make, model, age and mileage.

Deductibles range from $0 to $250, and different deductible amounts are available for certain plans. With a higher deductible, you’ll pay a lower monthly cost. You pay a deductible whenever you file a claim. For example, if you file a claim for $600 with a $100 deductible, CarShield will pay $500, and you’ll be responsible for paying $100.

Older vehicles with high mileage will typically cost more to cover than newer vehicles with low mileage. More comprehensive exclusionary plans will cost more than basic powertrain coverage.

You can buy coverage on a month-to-month basis at a price-locked rate. That means that your monthly price will never increase once you begin your coverage, and your protection lasts only as long as you want it to.

The best way to get precise prices is to contact CarShield. You can get a free quote from CarShield by submitting your information via an online form or by calling directly.

Is CarShield worth it?

CarShield is a solid option, depending on your warranty needs. We like that it protects vehicles with up to 300,000 miles, making it a great choice for high-mileage vehicles. The wide range of plans and deductibles it offers means that there’s an appropriate plan available for every vehicle and price point.

We also appreciate that it offers month-to-month plans and that you’re not locked into a long-term commitment. If you decide it’s not working for you, then you can simply not renew your coverage for the next month.

CarShield FAQ

Is CarShield legit?

Yes, CarShield is a legitimate company offering extended vehicle warranty plans. Before you settle on any warranty company, it is important to do your research and understand its cancellation and refund policies, along with its various plan offerings. Does CarShield cover electrical problems?

Yes, all plans except the Silver plan cover electrical problems.

What doesn’t CarShield cover?

CarShield does not cover oil changes or similar routine maintenance issues. It also does not cover preexisting conditions, breakdowns caused by lack of maintenance or breakdowns from acts of nature (e.g., flooding, lightning, smoke). Be sure to check your plan’s specific coverage.

I had filed a claim for my car, and initially, everything seemed to go well. CarShield covered the costs as expected, and I only had to pay my $100 deductible. However, the trouble began when the repair shop I chose didn’t fix my car properly. They were supposed to replace the radiator and water pump, but instead, they added a leak sealant that ended up damaging my engine over time by flowing through it.

Unfortunately, CarShield couldn’t cover these subsequent damages because they were caused by the poor service from the shop, not a new failure. I found myself stuck because the engine issues caused further overheating, and I later learned from another mechanic that my engine was beyond repair. It was a tough lesson, and my car, unfortunately, had to be scrapped due to its age and mileage—it's a 2015 model with 200,000 miles.

Through it all, CarShield’s customer service was solid. They responded timely and did exactly what their policy covered the first time. However, I do wish there was a better system in place to assist with issues arising from bad repairs from chosen dealers or shops.

Despite the unfortunate situation with my car repair, I can't fault CarShield for the challenges I faced—it was more about the poor choice of repair shop on my part. I appreciate CarShield being upfront and fulfilling their part of the deal initially.

One of the key features that drew me to CarShield was their prompt response in case of accidents or damage, as they offer immediate roadside assistance, which is very reassuring.

I initiated my CarShield coverage by phone and received a hard copy of my contract, which I thoroughly reviewed. However, I faced a minor glitch — I couldn't access my coverage details on the app. When I contacted a customer service representative, I was informed that I'd need to use a laptop or computer due to compatibility issues with my phone. Despite this hiccup, the representative was helpful and professional.

I believe I chose full coverage, mainly because it includes essential components like engine protection. Although the monthly payments are somewhat steep, I appreciate the quality of the service CarShield provides. They offer various payment options, and I opted for auto-pay, which ensures my payments remain current.

Having CarShield coverage gives me confidence, knowing I'm protected even if I never have to file a claim. I'm a mechanically inclined person who maintains my vehicle well, so this coverage is more of a safety net for unforeseen events.

Overall, I'd rate CarShield four stars. While the service quality is excellent, the cost might be prohibitive for some. However, the customer service deserves five stars, mainly due to the agent's efforts to secure a reasonable rate for me. Even though the price is high, their responsiveness and willingness to offer additional discounts make the partnership worthwhile. Meanwhile, the website experience was smooth, earning four stars as well.

I recommend considering CarShield if you’re looking for comprehensive and responsive vehicle protection, provided the pricing fits your budget.

I asked a few friends and checked CarShield’s benefits online, and I decided to go with them. The recommendation and information I received suggested that CarShield might offer better benefits compared to other options. My experience with their claim process has been mixed. The first claim I filed was handled wonderfully; they covered an extensive $1600 repair for a component that required attention. It felt reassuring. However, my recent experience was slightly different. The air conditioner's fan switch was faulty, and while the job amounted to $800, CarShield only covered half. I found myself wishing they had contributed more.

When signing up, I preferred to talk directly with a representative as I felt it enabled a better deal. The sign-up process was easy, and I’d rate that interaction a 5 for the convenience and clarity it afforded. I've briefly used their mobile app, though I would have to look for it now, as I don’t drive very often.

Pricing seems reasonable and I appreciate what CarShield offers. However, during my last claim, the garage faced a lengthy hold time. While this reflects broader workforce issues, it wasn't directly my problem. Nonetheless, CarShield did handle the claim.

As a whole, my experience with CarShield lands around a 4. While I'm generally pleased with their services, there's room for improvement, particularly in the claim handling aspect.

      Response from CarShield

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed experience with us. We’re grateful you chose CarShield after careful research and trusted recommendations, and we’re pleased to hear that your first claim—covering a significant $1,600 repair—was handled to your satisfaction. That’s exactly the kind of peace of mind we strive to provide.

We also appreciate your positive feedback about our sign-up process and pricing. It's great to know our representatives were able to offer clarity and support during enrollment, and we’re glad to hear the overall value still resonates with you.

Regarding your recent claim, we understand your frustration and truly empathize with your concerns. In this case, two components were submitted to us for review. One was eligible for coverage under your specific plan and was approved accordingly. The other part, unfortunately, was not listed for coverage, which is why only a portion of the total repair cost was paid. We understand how this can be disappointing, especially when repair costs are high, and we're always here to help review the details with you to ensure full clarity.

We also appreciate your note about the hold time your repair facility experienced. While we're actively working to improve communication times industry-wide, we recognize that delays—regardless of cause—impact your experience, and we’re committed to making that process more seamless.

Your honest feedback helps us identify areas for improvement, and we're grateful for your overall satisfaction and thoughtful rating. If you'd like to discuss your plan in more detail or have questions about what is and isn't covered, our customer support team would be happy to assist.

Thank you again for being a valued CarShield customer.

I saw CarShield's commercial on TV. When I got it, it was a year before I paid my car off. It always seems once you pay the car off, that's when things go wrong. So far, my experience with CarShield has been positive. I've used their services twice, both times through my Subaru dealership. The issues I faced were quite pressing: electronic problems with my windows and an air conditioner fan malfunction, which gets crucial during our hot summers. Each time I visited the dealership, I only had to cover the deductible. The electronic issue alone would have cost me $1,200 out of pocket if not for the warranty.

The first incident involved a complete failure of the driver’s control for all windows, especially the passenger side ones. I couldn't control those windows from my seat, which was quite inconvenient. Fortunately, the dealership service was quick – they resolved both issues in just a day and even provided me with a rental car, which was great because I had errands to run.

I've never had any trouble contacting CarShield’s customer service. The process is straightforward; just a call to their service line gets me where I need to be. For friends or family asking for advice, I'd recommend CarShield. I believe in choosing middle-of-the-road options, where you get reasonable value for reasonable cost. It's much like buying tires – I won't opt for the cheapest or the highest-end, as I believe in getting what you pay for.

We’re also glad your dealership visits went smoothly and that you were able to take advantage of the rental benefit while your vehicle was being serviced.

We truly appreciate your kind words about our customer service and your practical, honest perspective on value. Like you, we believe in finding the right balance—coverage that’s dependable, straightforward, and fairly priced.

Thank you again for your recommendation and trust. We’re here whenever you need us and hope your Subaru continues running strong!

I frequently saw CarShield's commercials on TV, and upon researching online, I found them to be a reputable company. My car's previous warranty had expired, and since I had just paid off the vehicle, I opted for CarShield for peace of mind in case of unforeseen expenses.

When I needed to make a claim with CarShield, the process turned out to be remarkably smooth. My car broke down, and after contacting them, they immediately arranged a tow to the repair facility. The staff at the facility coordinated everything and kept me well-informed throughout. CarShield customer service matched this consistency, ensuring I knew what to expect every step of the way.

After experiencing how efficiently my claim was handled, I feel much more at ease about having the extended auto warranty. Initially worried about potential repair costs, I was pleased to find that my expenses were minimal compared to what I expected. Overall, the process left me very happy with their service.

The payment for the CarShield warranty is reasonably priced. Although, like many, I feel it could always be less, the fee is fair and automatically debited from my account, which makes it quite hassle-free.

Customer service was fantastic, and everyone involved was highly supportive and effective. The actual claim submission involved just a few calls placed by me, but the repair facility handled most of the follow-up, which made the process even more straightforward.

In conclusion, my experience with CarShield was overwhelmingly positive, and I'm glad to recommend them based on their service quality and efficiency.
