This letter is to inform you that Thrifty Rental Car at 4100 Global Gateway Connector College Park, GA 30337 is allowing people to rent vehicles in other customer's names. I was notified about a rental in my name on 5/21/2012. I have not rented from this company in over three months. Mr. ** at 4100 Global Gateway Connector College Park, GA 30337 stated that this car has been returned wrecked and they are saying that I am responsible for all damages and that they have me on camera with a gentlemen. Attached below, you will be able to view my statement/letter that I sent to their office yesterday to describe this story in full detail. I have also included a timeline of where I was during this time frame (with numbers and addresses attached).
Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I purchased a car on 5-10-12. I told them I wasn't satisfied with the noises it made. I asked them to fix it and after the contract was signed, they would not honor fixing the car. I returned it on 5-16-12. I told them I would not honor the loan and contacted the loan dept and also told them it was mechanically unfit. Santander Loan Agency has not received contract yet but said they will call when they do. I have a fraud alert on my credit bureau so they have to call me. Thrifty Car sales brought the car back to me and parked it in my front yard and did not leave the only key that was provided to me. So now I have a car in my front yard that I had returned to them. I can't bring it back again to them because they took the key and locked the car. They are harassing me to buy a 2010 Chevy Malibu with mechanical defects that they refused to fix after contract was signed. Please help. I have worked very hard to build my credit and do not deserve this kind of treatment.

We rented a mini van in Pensacola, FL for 5 days. We were told to pay for their refueling cost upfront, because gas in Pensacola was $3.75 a gallon at the stations. It's not the case. The gas was $3.45 the entire time we were there! We were completely lied to. Also, we were quoted a price of $365.00 for the 5-day rental. Our total bill was $451.00. (Apparently, Thrifty added a huge amount of extra fees.) We will never rent from Thrifty again. They are liars and cheaters.

The original charge shown on printout from computer is $539.47. I did not opt for insurance or any other charges except, fuel $83.65 ($4.78 x 17.5). Total, $623.12. I was charged $636.37. When I complained after returning the car, I was told "Too bad, that's the way it is." So what happened here is that I was charged tax on fuel, which is already taxed by the government. As it turned out, all over Kauai, the fuel was $4.71 and she told me yours was cheaper than anywhere on the island. Not complaining about that, just the overcharge on tax that should have not been added in. I feel you owe me $13.25.

We recently rented from Thrifty at San Francisco Airport and returned it to the same place (where else would we return it to, right?). We were in a little bit of a rush and did not check the receipt until we got home. We called and were told that the drop fee is for dropping the vehicle at a different location than we picked it up. When I stated that this was not the case, she looked it up and said "Oh, the agent entered SFD, not SFO." We will have to send it to corporate to investigate and that takes 5-7 business days. Meanwhile, our credit card is accruing interest on that $500.
My question is what is there to investigate. The airport code SFD is for an airport in Venezuela! Did they feel we may have rented their car and drove to South America? Today, I called customer service back and asked to speak to the person directly investigating my situation. She stated that they were still waiting to hear from the facility, but if they did not hear from them by tomorrow, she would reverse the charge. I asked, if it's that easy and you don't have to hear from them to reverse it, just do it now. No, that's not company policy sir. I then asked for the CEO's name and e-mail and wrote him. In that time, I checked my e-mail and the representative had e-mailed back, saying she was reversing the charge.
If Thrifty does this just 10 times a day over the whole country, that works out to $1.8 million a year that they collect interest on. So they will reverse the charges (of the people who catch them), but in the meantime, they are smiling all the way to the bank. What a scam! Check your receipts from now on!

We rented a car from Thrifty on May 3, 2012. When asked if we wanted the insurance, we declined (as we always do). When we returned the car, the $178 bill became $512.00. They added the insurance and said that we requested it. After several phone calls, they refused to refund the money. We are asking for the camera review and see if they will provide it to us!

Warning! Thrifty Car Rental is a thief! I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental. I reserved the car on the internet a week before I left on vacation for $148.00. When I arrived at LAX, I went to pick up the car and the sales clerk at Thrifty proceeded to do my paperwork and he charged me $521.00 and I said no! It's supposed to be only $148 and he shows me a sign and the sign said, "A hold of up to $400.00 may be put on your debit card." He said, "When you return the car, you will get the money back." I have never rented from Thrifty Car Rental. I always use Alamo (a great place). Big mistake! When I got back to Thrifty's to return the vehicle, he handed me a ticket that showed an amount of $521.00. So I asked to speak to the manager. A little girl, about 18 years old, came out to hear my complaint.
When I explained it to her, she said, "I am sorry, you signed the paper work and you asked for one million dollars worth of insurance." I told her that the guy at Thrifty told me that the price he charged me in the beginning was a hold of up to $400.00 for using my debit card. When I arrived to rent the car, the guy did ask me if I wanted insurance and I told him no. I was explaining my problem to the manager and she told me I had to leave the building because the other customers were hearing what I had to say. I then asked to talk to the guy that rented the car to me when I arrived and she said the guy would not come to work until 3:30 pm; of course, my plane was to leave at 2:50 pm. So now I am in line at the airport trying to call the manager at Thrifty Car Rental and they keep asking me what my problem was. I explained my problem and then they pass me along to someone else about 6 times just like the credit commercial. I end up with Peggy and she hangs up on me.
Before they hung up on me, I told the manager to go back and review the camera in the building at Thrifty Car Rental. It will show the guy asking me if I wanted any insurance and it will show both my wife and myself saying no. I also asked the manager if the guy who rents the vehicles out gets a commission off the insurance money. The manager told me he could not discuss that with me. My question is why would anyone need a million-dollar insurance plan when driving a Chevy Impala?

I rented a car from Thrifty Rental Car through Expedia.com between 18/4 until 24/4. The total rate was 158.61 Euro with the basic insurance. When I went to the office at Linate Airport which was Auto Europa Rental Car office as a partner, the employee said it's a wrong rate and the right one is 200 Euro for the basic insurance and 318.59 Euro for the total insurance. Trying to make me understand the difference, she told me it's a mistake from the website or from the Thrifty Rental Car office. It's not my mistake and I need my money back please. My itinerary no. at Expedia was ** and my contract no. is **.

We rented a car from Thrifty Phoenix AZ airport location. The sales associate charged us a total of $641.33 for a five-day rental. Because of his scare tactics we were ** into everything but the kitchen sink. I knew we were being taken advantage of, but on the sightseeing tour bus to the Grand Canyon, it was proved. Two other groups of people rented their cars from Hertz and Avis. One was charged $190 for a week, the other $220 for a week. Everyone was shocked at the price we paid. We were three women out for a fun vacation that this company took advantage of. If this was even a $100 difference, we would say Thrifty was high, but $400 difference is highway robbery. We take several vacations a year. This will be the last year we will be gouged by Thrifty Car Rental. Shame on them for taking advantage of consumers, and from other reviews that I have read, this is the norm. We do not want to be contacted by a lawyer. We would like a refund to match the reputable car rental companies.

April 11, we reserved a compact car at Fort Myers Airport. The woman attendant signed us up for insurance, TRIPSAVER, and tolls. Total for the week came to $758.58. We are senior citizens who happen to have AAA, New York State Insurance and we were led to believe there were numerous toll roads in the Fort Myers Beach area. We were given a mid-size car as an upgrade, but we feel we were taken advantage of by a fast-talking salesperson who needed some sales and we were the victims. We will not be using your service again. We thought you were in the business of serving the public, not fleecing them.

You're taking a trip. You go online and request rental car quote for a car at your destination, request a full size car and see the words full-size car like a Chevy Impala or similar. When you get to the car rental location, the car is a mid-size smaller car but wait, you were quoted and are paying for a full-size car. Here is how it happens:
Clearwater Transportation LTD runs Thrifty Car Rental / Dollar Rent a Car at Austin Bergstrom Airport Texas. When they get car rental request for a full-size Car Chevy Impala, they give you a Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima. All are listed by the manufacturers as mid-size vehicles. How do you get less than what you were led to believe you're paying for? I asked them and here is their answer: There will always be a reference vehicle and will state or similar due to the fact that different locations runs different size, makes and models in any given category. When you book a reservation, we do not make any guaranty to a specific make, model or exact specifications.
The rental company can magically resize a vehicle from what the manufacturer has stated its size as mid-size to the new full-size. So what is next? You order a full size 12oz steak dinner and get an 8oz smaller version and are charged for the 12oz because that is all they have and that is what they call their smaller steaks here the full size steak dinner.
How can a car rental company advertize car rentals of mid-size cars as full-size? The secret is in what you call it. I was told by that car rental company manager, you better contact the renting location and find out what that company runs in it size class. So you can't believe or trust in what is advertized on national car rental websites. You have to call the company and ask them, so what do you call a full-size car at your location. What is this new version of the shell game? Car renters beware. You may not get what you paid for, trust no one, verify and then if they are playing the word game, go to someone else. Your money is good at the other guy's store.

Poor customer service and handling of accident: I recently used Thrifty rental car for the first (and last time). A nightmare would be the best way to describe it: Reservation was not on record and company seemed to have outsourced the rental. Car was finally brought to the hotel, but contract was not really fully explained (major problem later). Car turned out to be pretty beat up (inside looked dated and the mirror adjustment handle on the driver's side didn't work), hardly newer model shown on their website. After an accident occurred, they never spoke with me initially at the accident site on March 30th. They told me that since I had signed the contract, I was liable for the excess even though I had questions about the other driver's liability. She made little or no effort to avoid hitting me as she actually forced her car to pass on the right after I had pretty much completed turning. Also strangely enough, the police were never called.
Thrifty staff brought an interpreter to the meeting (Where was she when the initial reservation was made?). But she only created more problems, with her and the staff member insisting I had signed a contract with them. They stated the police didn't need to be called, even though the Thrifty website recommends calling them. The woman told me that no rental car company offered a reduction on the liability access, which turned out to be a lie since Avis offered to reduce it to about 1/3 of the amount of the collision bond.
I complained to the company by email, but their website indicates a complaint will take up to 21 days to be responded to. Nice, since the credit card will be debited by then. I received a damage report from the rental car company by email and asked for a translation and also asked if it is usual to only get one mechanic's estimate (in the US, you normally need at least three). Bill was rendered in French, scanned copy only. I tried calling their customer service. The company has no international access number, only a 1-800 number for customer service (I live in Japan). I called the reservations number and was transferred to customer service automated call waiting message and got tired of waiting after 20 minutes. I strongly recommend to never use this rental car company. I don't know how they claim they are an international company.
I booked online at Thrifty, a car rental in Italy. The total amount with basic insurance was 179.66 euro. For our surprise, once we gave the reservation code, passport and driver's license to the representative in Italy, they told us Thrifty has gave us the wrong price, the correct would be 235.80 euro. Also, they said Thrifty is aware of the problem, so I suspect this is going for a while.
I want to warn everyone about this trap. Beware, that the rate they display is much less from what you will have to pay when getting the car in their Linate Airport Office. I contacted Thrifty Head office but they said they could do nothing, because that Italian office is independent. But if they are independent and the main office cannot guarantee the correct price, they should warn the customer that the displayed fare is not what you would end paying, they will give the price they want at the office! For customers, that plan ahead and try to save. That is a trap once you get to the office, what other option would you have? Pay full balcony fair in some other trusty company? So here is my tip, do not rent with Thrifty if you go to Italy. Go with another known and respected company.

When we arrived at Thrifty at 10:15am after being picked up from the airport by the Thrifty Shuttle (We had a reservation for 9:30am.), our vehicle was not ready. It was buried in snow and had not been warmed up or cleaned off. We then had to wait 15 minutes for the vehicle to be cleaned off. This should have been done before or while the Shuttle was gone to pick us up at the airport. They were not short-staffed, as when we arrived at Thrifty, there were 2 employees at the counter (including the shuttle driver) and two other employees and a trainee! The car had so much snow on it that they were unable to tell if there was any damage to any part of the vehicle.
When returning the vehicle, we locked a cell phone in the car and realized it after we dropped the keys in the drop box. There was no emergency number of any kind left/posted that we could call. We dropped the rental car off at 6am. We had to wait until Thrifty opened that day at 1pm to call, and at which time, we were already back in Yellowknife.
The employees at Thrifty found the cell phone and called us after I had already left a message. I asked the employee to Express Post the cell phone to me and that I would even pay the postage! That was ten days ago, and I called today to see when the phone had been sent. They said that it hadn't been sent yet and that they didn't know why. Today is Wednesday, Friday is Good Friday, and Monday is also a holiday. Therefore, I will not get the phone until Tuesday. Also, if I had not called Thrifty looking to see when the phone was sent, how much longer would it have taken for the phone to be sent?! We are very disappointed and frustrated with the level of service that we received and will most likely not rent from Thrifty here on out.
I am a loyal customer of Thrifty. I rent often. Each rental is for a week or better. The last rental I had was the first week in March. I had a stroke of bad luck, and my purse was stolen the night before I returned my car. I had to return the car empty. Thrifty charged me $190.00 for one tank of gas on a Dodge Journey. My card would not authorize that charge; however, all other rental fees were covered. I called Thrifty numerous times and spoke to representatives with very nasty attitudes who would not let me speak to a supervisor. I asked for some kind of help for a loyal customer. I said I would even pay $100.00 for the tank of gas. They all said no and that I had to pay $190.00 or remain on the "do not rent" list.

It seems absolutely diabolical the fact that Thrifty at the UAE Dubai airport has charged my card twice: once for $119.68 on February 25 this year and once for $39.30 on the 27th of February. I returned the car in good faith. Please tell me why this has happened as I am no millionaire. I have made numerous phone calls to your offices. Every time I get in, I am told to speak to someone else—no one is taking the blame. I want this resolved as this is making my blood boil! The following are my booking details: car was picked up from the Dubai airport on the 11/2/12 at 2 am; car was dropped off on 12/2/12 at 1830 hours with just over half a tank off petrol as that was how much was given; car registration plate: **.

I rented a car at the Thrifty Miami Airport between 12/11-17/2011, drove around Florida and Georgia, and paid dozens of toll charges in Florida highways. But I received a letter from Thrifty dated in January 13, 2012 regarding 4 toll charges totaling $2.50, plus a $100 charged by Thrifty of "administration fees" on my credit card without authorization. I wrote them back on February 18 explaining that I paid all tolls and enclosed a check of $10 in good faith (four times the toll charge) to settle the case. Thrifty immediately cashed my check, but their DTG Vehicle Violations Department emailed me back on 2/28 and notified me that the check is "not acceptable" (despite that it has been cashed). I wrote back on March 4 to protest the double charge (which is illegal and predatory) and by today, March 23, they have not satisfactorily settle the case and my credit card charge has not been reversed. They have no problems in double charging their loyal customer, but are extra 'thrifty' in correcting their wrongs.
I reserved a compact car for Porta Vallarta, Mexico on 2/24/2012 for 8 days on the Thrifty website. The price was a total of $97.00. I waved all insurance and have Amex, rental car insurance and GEICO. When I got to the counter in Mexico, they wanted to add $297.00 more just for liability insurance. They said it's Mexican law and mandatory. I said never mind, I will take cabs for the rest of my stay. The worst part, I have written two emails to Thrifty customer care since my return with confirmation code and all, but I did not receive a reply to either from Thrifty to date. I have since learned from GEICO that they do not cover me in Mexico, but have Amex supplement for $29.00 per rental.

Fraudulent Refuel Charges - I flew into Little Rock, Arkansas for spring break. I rented a Ford Escape SUV from Thrifty and I had to finally interrupt the rep at the counter to say "No, no, no," as he insisted over and over that I needed to buy all of Thrifty's extra charges - insurance, etc. I returned the SUV to Little Rock Airport and I refueled it 15 minutes away from the airport, carefully making sure to fill the tank as much as it would allow. The female employee, who checked the vehicle in, said the tank was 1/8 low and I would be charged a refueling charge at $6.99 per gallon. I advised her it was not low on gas as I had just filled it up minutes ago. I showed her the fuel receipt and she said that that station was not within the 10 mile range and she continued to charge me $20 extra on my credit card. This is very poor customer service. I will not rent from Thrifty again. Beware of scams with Thrifty.

We reserved a rental car at Thrifty in Denver for pickup on 03/09/12 and return on 03/11/12. We were given the option of prepaying a tank of gas so we would not have to stop to fill up before returning the car. We stated that we were going to Loveland and back and would not be doing much extra driving, but the agent assured us we would use approximately 1/2 tank each way, not being familiar with the area we prepaid. When we returned the car, we had used only a little over 1/4 of a tank, which we pointed out to the woman checking the cars in. She said we would have to speak with the people in the office, so we went back inside to ask what could be done to rectify the situation, as we had obviously been given incorrect information.
We were told that we should have come into the office before checking the car back in and the only thing they could offer us now was to refund the prepaid amount and charge us to refill the 1/4 tank we had used, at $8+ per gallon! As the agent pointed, out it would probably be a "wash", financially. It is not a huge amount of money that was involved, but we were knowingly lied to and will never rent from Thrifty again.
The "gentleman" who had rented the car to us came in while we were discussing the problem and when we asked him about his less than honest estimate of gas consumption he said he was not on the clock and walked out of the room. I know we should have taken time to research distance, miles per gallon per type of rental, etc. but I did not expect such outright dishonesty, apparently with the blessing of management.

I rented a car from Thrifty on the night of 24 January and drove to the Buena Vista Palace Hotel where the car remained parked until leaving Orlando on 27 January. I just received a notification that my rental had a toll violation on 25 January at 8:20 am and have been charged the toll and a $25 fee by Thrifty. Only problem is the car was parked. My wife and I were on the Disney monorail at 8:20 am making our way to the Magic Kingdom for the Keys to the Kingdom tour. The car was in the hotel lot! Apparently, they must have confused the records of who had what car. Now, I have to waste my time trying to get it sorted out. We are also Hertz Gold customers so even if Hertz costs more, it just became my #1 rental choice.

I rented a car for my 22-year old son through Priceline at Thrifty Car Rental in Denver at the airport. When my son arrived (the car was already paid for), he was asked for a card so they could hold a deposit on it of $250 (which is common at all car rental places). The person at the counter, Rick (he would not tell us his last name because apparently he was not allowed to. Yeah right!) told my son the card was declined. There was $1900 in the account at the time. He then informed me over the phone that it was not a matter of having the money. It was because of his Equifax score (he is 22 and has not yet built up enough credit).
I politely asked if I could give him one of my credit cards and he said yes as long as I come in there, knowing full well my son was calling me in Southern California. He even yelled at me to be quiet at one point since I was trying to get my point across and wanted to talk. So, he would not rent the car to my son and left him literally stranded at the Denver International Airport. Thankfully his coworker was nice enough to drive my son to Payless Car Rental where they gladly rented him a car. Only problem is that since it was last minute, I had to pay three times the amount. I was told by many other car rental companies that they do not do a credit check.
We were asked if we had an additional driver, thinking it was a formality. We signed everything and when we got our credit card charges, we realized we were charged for it. I called to complain. They did nothing for us, but let us know we signed it and too bad! This is horrible misrepresentation for their financial benefit!

I visited the USA last week and I needed to travel from Fort Lauderdale Airport To Sarasota. I Rented a car in Budget and I explained that I just needed it for traveling to Sarasota, which is about 3 hours. That I will return the car the same day in Budget of Sarasota Airport . I was charged $55.00 dollars and they told me that there was no problem with leaving the car at another airport.
The same case was for return, but in this case, Budget Rent a Car did not have cars available in Sarasota Airport, so I went with Thrifty. First, the cost was for $102 and they charged me for the GPS also, and Budget did not charge me the GPS. This already seemed to be too much because my urge was to be in 3 hours at the Fort Lauderdale Airport. I had no option but to pay the $102.00.
At Thrifty in Fort Lauderdale Airport, the man who received the car, told me that I have a charge of $96.00 to drop off the car in another place. I explained clearly to the young man who attended me that, I would leave the car at Thrifty at the Fort Lauderdale Airport, just for a few hours. On the documents, he wrote down the returning place. So they charge me $250.00 per day, that were really only 3 hours. I had never paid so much for renting a car. I made a claim and I am still waiting.

I rented a car for the 25th of August for a trip to Hilton Head, SC. The storm, called Irene, hit the area where I live rendering it impossible to pick up the vehicle or call as the phone service was affected as well. I made an attempt to call and there was no connection due to the storm. Travel was impossible as the roads were flooded out. I called on the 27th after the phone service was restored to let them know that I had made all attempts to contact them. The Edison location said it was fine and there was no fee for cancelling a reservation which I was also told through the 800 number when I rented on the phone. Thrifty deducted $111.94 from my check card, representing one day of rental. I disputed it with my bank and they send me photos of documents regarding the Thrifty rental policy which I never received by mail or mail. I was advised there is never a charge for a missed rental on the 800 line I asked the question twice. I am requesting a return of my money as I never received anything from Thrifty Car Rental, also it was impossible to cancel any reservation sooner than I did.

I had to go to NC state for my grandmother's funeral from Providence, RI, and rented a mini van for $39 per day. I had to stay for two extra days, therefore, I call the company and talked to one of their agents and that agent stated that the extra days would be at the same rate. Happened to be that by the time I returned the mini van, which was four days later, I was expecting a $220 to $230 bill, instead, I got a $301.94 bill? I talked to the manager and he explained about all this crazy fees and three different state taxes and more fees for changing the agreement, when I explained to him that I talked to someone about the extra days and I was told that it was going to be the same rate and no one explain about the fees he basically stated that I was lying. I stated to him that I will never use Thrifty Car Rental nor recommend it. He stated that he did not care.

They charged us $160 to deep clean for pet hair removal. We did not travel with pets nor contact any pets on our trip, nor bring any aboard. They suggested we wore fur coats. None of our traveling party even own fur coats, let alone wear them in such fine weather. We brought no pet hair on board. Perhaps, the people before us did. Nonetheless, we are paying for their regular maintenance is my guess. And since we are 1,000 miles away, I guess we just have to suck it up! No thanks, Thrifty.

I rented a car from Thrifty for two days, from the Sanford/Orlando airport, and when we got in the car, we noticed that it only had 1/4 tank of gas. I thought it was weird that no one came out to mark where that gas was, and where I had to return it, but after a two hour delay, and Enterprise (who I usually rent from) having no more cars available, I was ready to go. When we returned the car, we did so on empty, and since we got it at only a quarter, figured that the charge would be minimal. I got an additional charge on my card for $154 to fill up the tank at $8.99 a gallon. I explained to them that the tank was not full, and was told that it's in the contract that the cars are given with a full tank of gas. No one came to verify, and now I'm stuck paying for gas that I didn't use, at an over the top rate. This is my first and last time renting from this company.

Found an extra charge on my AMEX card from Thrifty Car Rental and disputed it. The dispute came back stating that I said that I would be traveling in Illinois and that I had crossed a boundary into Ohio and was charged an extra $303.57 on top of the rental of $143.99! I have rented hundreds of times and this is the very first time that there were state boundary's involved! Not taking the car to Canada, Mexico, etc., but state boundaries! I will never rent from Thrifty again! I picked the car up at St Louis, MO to drive to my home town of Quincy, IL.
The paperwork with the rental car was incorrect and I had to return to the front desk for correct paperwork. (Wrong car). Granted I was in a hurry, but it was no secret that the sole purpose of the rental was to drive to Ohio! This was never addressed during the rental. I initially reserved the rental via Expedia and this was not stated either.

I landed Xmas morning and went to the rental counter of Thrifty/Dollar which was being operated by Rent Terstappen. The line was fairly decent, so I waited for about an hour. Upon being helped I was asked whether I would like no deductible insurance for 23 euros a day or 16 euro insurance with a 600 deductible.
I was then charged a 600 euro amount instead of actually a hold being placed for a security deposit, which screwed with my exchange rate. The insurance thing is complete **. And the tire thing I have no idea if it is a law or not, but I was never given snow tires. I had standard issue Goodyear Performance ZR16 tires on the BMW I rented. Nothing was snow tire about them. They were thread patterns made to whip around the autobahn. So if it's a law, fine--but I'm not paying for something I was never given. Maybe their terrible company put in the fine print that you also needed to ask for the tires after paying for them.
Mechanical issue #1: The check engine light came on and I found out there was no oil in the car. I know this sounds weird, but you need to have oil in the damn car for it to operate. There's no manual in the car so I take a few minutes to try to figure out if there is any special oil that needs to be included. All the oil cap says is "BMW recommends Castrol." Awesome, because that helps. I finally decide that it's probably standard synthetic and go in to purchase oil. After comparing a few I find one is diesel and one must be not diesel. I purchase that one for a lovely 17 euros and fill that car up.
Vehicle maintenance issue #2: Still worried I put the wrong oil in. Sure enough the check engine light comes on again but this time it's red instead of yellow, which means bad news. So now I'm scared ** of the car seizing up (for the second time) because I put the wrong oil in. While driving in a slight panic I am still able to figure out how to give me a code on the computer and it says "CC-ID 63" because I have a ** clue what that means. So I turn on my data on my iPhone and start to google it (nice $23 charge in service for that one). Turns out it's no tire pressure. So first no oil and now no air. Does anyone even review the cars before giving them to the customers? So I go off the highway for the nearest town and fill up on air. I was told that since I signed a contract, there's nothing they will do for me. So fine. I got **. But I will never rent from Dollar or Thrifty again.

Thrifty charged me $25 for a 50-cent toll in "Adminstration fees" times two, means we had $50 in fees for a $1 toll. I'm sure they had a legal right - fine print somewhere in their long contract. That is my complaint - that they are taking advantage of consumers who are not going to bring their attorney and spend 35 minutes reading the fine print in their lengthy legal agreement, and allow the company to take advantage of consumers the way they are. The government should not allow such excess fee! Or the company should have regulations on making sure they are displayed so that consumers are aware.

I rented a car from Thrifty for 10 days which I picked and returned at LAX. I told the person at the desk that I wanted to waive all the extra insurance. They had a box on the counter, and he told me to initial in all the boxes, which I did. Lo and behold, what I was initialing was that I wanted all the extra insurance. I didn't realize this until I got my credit card statement. Instead of $167, it was over $400. I will never use Thrifty again. I heard that the agents get a bonus for getting customers to sign up for the insurance which is why I suppose he never told me that I was mistakenly signing up for the insurance. What **!

The rate I was quoted was $10 a day. I have collision coverage through my credit card. When I came to the counter, I was told that by Israeli law, I had to take out the CDW and TP coverage from them. This added $119 a week to the rental price was making the total cost more than 250% of the original quote.
In addition, there was no way to contact the rental company upon arrival other than using a pay phone. Since I had no shekels, I couldn't call them. I had to take a taxi which got lost and I paid almost $20 for the taxi. Then, I was charged $27 for transportation to and from the Thrifty office by Thrifty even though I wasn't able to use their service when I arrived. They also charged about $13 for billing me the toll fee for the toll road. If you are using a toll road in Israel, there is no way else to pay it, so it is a mandatory fee unless you stay off the main highway in Israel.
It would have been nice to know this in advance of agreeing to rent from them. Other firms such as Hertz charge less for this service.
In total, it was a very bad experience. I believe other rental companies do the same in Israel. Be careful. The original quote was about $290 and the price out the door excluding the toll fee was $729.10.

Buyer beware. I rented a vehicle from Thrifty at their San Juan, PR location on the week of the 16 - 23 November 2011. I had made the reservation via Travelocity. During the initial check in, I noticed that the price on the contract was approximately 10% higher than I had originally locked with Travelocity. No big deal for me at the time but it was a sign of later things to come.
I was offered an "optional" service called "easy pass" (sp?). Knowing I could pay for the tolls myself, I declined the service. I was told by one of the attendants that if I used the service without having it included into my contract, I would be assessed a fine of $40 by Thrifty. I asked the attendant and her counterpart to confirm whether or not I could pay for tolls via the cash lane to which the response was yes. With that, my family and I went on our way.
A few days later while cruising in the south coast of PR, I attempted to pay for my toll fee via the cash lane only to be told by the attendant that the vehicle's easy pass was active and had already paid the toll. Naively thinking I could pay into the vehicle's account with the intent of successfully arguing with the rental agency about the vehicle's unwillingness to allow one the ability to pay in cash, I gave the toll booth attendant $10.00 to add into the Thrifty account. That didn't work. I was advised that even though I had elected to pay for my tolls in cash, their vehicles already come with the "easy pass" pre-installed, which does not allow for one to pay the toll without using the service. As a result, I was fined $40.00 by Thrifty. So, for a grand total of $0.80 in tolls, I am out $40 for the fine and $10 for the attempt at paying for my tolls via the cash lane. That does not include the higher than originally quoted rental rate. When everything was said and done, I ended up paying 60% higher than the rate quoted by Travelocity.
Here is what is wrong with Thrifty's policy. If the vehicle is set to pay for tolls, then do not give the option to the driver. Instead, add the usage fee to the baseline rental fee. To do otherwise is a cheap way to increase your margins by trapping tourists into an unfair company fine. Not only that, but unless other companies are doing the same thing, you are presenting an artificially low rental rate to potential customers, absolutely unethical and disappointing behavior.
I sent the company's service department an email two weeks ago asking for a refund of the Thrifty assessed fine in order to salvage my relationship with them but received no answer. I am never again going to use their services. I should have gone with Enterprise. In the end, the price enterprise had quoted would have been lower even without the fine. Lesson learned.

I rented a car to use while on a trip to FL. I got the bill, paid it and didn't think anymore about it. Three months later, Thrifty charged my account $25.75 more. When I called them to inquire, the customer service person was rude and told me that they charged me for exiting off an unmarked toll road. I asked them how could I exit off without driving on it since they didn't charge me for driving on it. He just said that I had signed an agreement to pay any toll charges and that someone or something took a picture of my car and they would continue to charge my charge card until all the charges were paid.
The charge for exiting off the unmarked toll road was 75 cents. The company charged me an additional $25 just because they had my charge card number. The person that I talked to said that it wasn't their fault that the state of FL didn't bother to clearly mark the toll roads and that some of them were not marked at all such as the one they say I exited from.
This is the worst experience that I have ever had with a rental company since I rented the car that I will probably never finish paying for. For the state of FL, it seems so illegal to charge for something that is not posted and it seems just like very poor customer service for Thrifty to charge $25 for a 75 cent charge.

On December 23, 2011 my husband and I arrived at the Colorado Springs Airport to pickup a car that we had reserved thru AOL at Thrifty Car Rental. The girl at the counter told us that the compact car that we ordered was not available and they were giving us a free upgrade. I ask if it was at the same price and she assured us that it was. After she did all the paperwork and my husband signed all of the papers we were ready to walk away and I pulled the paper out to make sure the price was the same as the AOL confirmation that I had in my possession. And it was not. It was $50.00 more than I was quoted. I immediately told her this was not correct. She said that AOL doesn't have the correct taxes on the confirmation. I told her that I always rent cars in this airport from Enterprise and their price is always the same as the confirmation.
I then noticed that we were being charged $4.99 per day for Roadside Assistance. We did not ask for this, nor did we want it. She said that we had to have it because if we lost the keys or the car broke down we would have to pay to have it towed. I then ask if she meant that if say the transmission went out on this vehicle a couple of miles down the road that I would have to pay for this vehicle to be towed. She said yes, and that I would also have to pay to have the transmission repaired.
She said that they have good mechanics, so it would be my fault if the transmission went out and I would have to pay for it. At this point, there are about three people waiting in line to rent cars left. I then called AOL and they booked me another car thru Enterprise at the same rate that I was to get from Thrifty. Then the girl said that she was charging me for a one day rental since I didn't take the car for 9 days and pay the extra $50.00. I am going to dispute this on my credit card since I never agreed to pay this charge and I never even touched the car that she charged me for and she put it on my card without any signature.
I will never deal with Thrifty again. It is sad that this is how this company makes their money by ripping people off. The person that waited on us was so rude I couldn't believe that she has a job like this. Also, this is not a one-star company. They are a no-star company but I was forced to put one star on this complaint. My husband and I had traveled all day to get to spend Christmas with our only granddaughter. We have made this trip many times to this airport and I normally get the luggage and my husband gets the car and we are on our way quickly.
My husband has several health problems and we needed to get to our destination so he could get some rest. Instead we have to go thru this nightmare at the airport for two hours. Our family was calling us to find out where we were and what was going on. It certainly was undue stress that neither of us needed and it was all caused by Thrifty Car Rental. Save yourself the aggravation and use another company.

Our 2011 vacation to Romania turned into our worst nightmare when we made the horrible mistake to rent a car from Dollar Thrifty SC AutoRent Srl Otopeni, Bucharest and fell victims to their business frauds out of which the most notorious is the rear bumper scratch scam. For a 12-day car rental that should have cost us $601.20 we paid $1,413.94. Total fraudulent charges were $812.74 out of which $99.76 for their insurance that we declined, $28.71 for out of hours rental during their regular business hours, and the huge one $684.27 for the rear bumper scratch scam. Watch out!

I asked to rent a car on 12/21/2011 for five days. I was told that the week's rental would be $209.00. I was told not to bring the car back on Christmas Day because the company would be closed. The clerk asked if I had liability insurance and I said yes. He said I was required to purchase insurance on the car at a one time cost of $22.00. I tried to explain to him that the sign read daily, but he insisted that it was a one time charge and not to worry. As it turns out I was paying the cost of the unwanted insurance on a daily basis.
When I returned the car on 12/26/2011 I was told that I owed $458.00 though I left a $350.00 deposit. I called Customer Service to try to resolve this issue and was told that I could not file a complaint until the remainder of my bill was paid. When talking to the car rental company clerk this morning, I was told that a week to this company means 5-7 days. I do not know who makes the decision or what the deciding factor is to determine exactly how many days constitute a week.
My income is limited and I cannot afford this nonsense and I pray that this organization will be investigated because of the poor customer service and company practices. I will never do business with this company again!

Caution for all who rent a vehicle from Thrifty in Cabo, San Lucas, BCS.
I rented a vehicle there in December of 2011. The contract stated that the total charges would be $268.77. When my credit card was charged, the amount was $296.19. This was because the franchise billed my card an inflated exchange rate. This is nothing but a scam. I will be filing a dispute with my credit card company and we will see if they will correct the amount.
Thrifty has yet to call about my complaint and it has been over two weeks.

We are stuck in a hotel waiting for Thrifty to show up with a replacement car because the Calgary manager has told us we will be liable if we drive the car we rented a few days ago! Who knows when they will show up? We rented a brand-new SUV which broke down in a parking lot on Christmas Day. Thanks to the help of a passerby we managed to get the cafe back to our hotel. Now we are told we can't leave the hotel until they come with a new car. So far, so bad--will Thrifty make it good? We have been waiting 3 hours now! We are stuck in Canmore. Waiting, waiting...

I rented a car for 3 1/2 days and the rental charges were $332.80. When I returned, my invoice was for $701.70! They charged me for insurance which I did not need, a toll pass which I also did not need and was told fuel was cheaper at the airport so I should prepay which I did! I found out that fuel was $0.15 cheaper outside the airport. I called them back and all they would cancel was the toll pass charge. This is a very shady outfit and needs to be investigated!

I booked a vehicle through Expedia's website. The booking was for a full-size SUV to pick up from SFO and to drop off at LAX. Pick up was booked for Monday, 12 December, at 12:00. I assumed this would be three days rental and had this confirmed at time of collection. Drop off was for Thursday, 15 December at 12:00. Total fees estimated by Expedia were $589.76 which included a drop off charge of $297.56. On arrival at SFO by taxi, we navigated the labyrinth of rental companies and were directed to the Thrifty Car collection point only to find out we had to go back to the reservations desk despite having a reservation. This is approximately a 10 to 15-minute ordeal with family and luggage.
The reservation procedure began with a lady who whilst very pleasant began to give me an overview of the real charges. This resulted in a rental agreement of $752.40. The other kicker is that the rental starts from the minute the reservation person logs you in. In this case, the kind lady was going to log us in at 11.00 am when it was already 11:15 and we still had to make our way back to the car, no car keys in my hand at this point. I had this adjusted to 11:15.Not wanting to spoil our holiday and not to mention we are sitting in a car depot with our luggage with no other means of transport or lodging booked, we accepted our medicine and headed off. On departure, I noticed that the fuel gauge was a whisker under reading on full, probably a needle width. The car wasn't exactly what I ordered. With our luggage, I was expecting a Chevy Tahoe, instead we were given a Traverse, which was okay if you had minimal luggage.
On arrival into LA, I sort out gas stations within the mandated distance of the drop off. This was no mean feat for someone new to driving in LA. We navigated our way around LAX and found the Thrifty depot. The woman who directed us in had limited vocabulary. "Keys" were the only words she knew at this point. Without any other advice on what we should do or where we should go, we began to unload the vehicle. Half way through this, the woman found another few sentences, "Your gas is low and we will have to charge you extra." I tried to explain that the indicator was under reading. The response was that I should have reported this in SFO. No worries, we should have wheeled around on the freeway on the way out of SFO and spent more of our rental time reporting something that Thrifty should know about! I was later to learn all about rental time.
By this time, a rather large guy who was introduced as the manager advised that he was taking the vehicle to the pump and would be charging us approximately $8.50 a gallon to refill. We were also advised that what he said was final. This manager then proceeded to drive off with the tail gate still fully open, wheels screeching and no concern whatsoever for anyone near or around the vehicle. It was at this point we collected our luggage and headed towards the reception area to book transport to our motel.
Whilst waiting for a taxi, the woman re-appeared and handed me a docket without stopping to explain its contents. The docket was now for $818.76. Items such as LDW1, UMP, SLI, VLF,PPP were now charged out at 4 days instead of three. The docket shows the return time at 11:47 am and for this, we were charged an extra hour at $9.56 which included "Old Mates" drive around to the bowser. I have been ripped of to the tune of $66.36 which isn't worth the grief to pursue and I imagine Thrifty is aware of this and from what I have read on this website, seems to be how they do business. The $66.36 is also insignificant in regards to the misleading rates on the Expedia website which really gets up ones nose. All the above combined with the rudeness bordering on standover tactics on reception after a long journey says everything about this company and some of its staff.
I went on to the Thrifty site to see if there were any links to make contact and lodge a complaint and maybe give Thrifty the right to respond. The only contact link was to join a membership. All this tells me is that they really do not want to know about complaints. I could have called on an international number but that would only incur more cost and time. I would have thought in hard times that companies such as this would strive to accommodate international clients who would happily spread the word. Obviously, not Thrifty USA!

This website is forcing me to put a star there. I would give them a negative if it would allow it.
I rented a full size car on 11/13/2011 and this was the most horrible rental I have ever dealt with. I did the rental thru Expedia.com where it said the rental had unlimited miles and was $65.86 (which included taxes). When I get to the car rental location and pick up the car, the clerk told me that it was not unlimited miles and I was forced to pay $147.55 for a one-day rental. I had to get the car and leave and I didn't have time to continue listening to the clerk who told me that I was a liar about the website saying the miles were unlimited.
I made many phone calls throughout that evening and the next day, so instead of being able to focus on family fun and taking my niece around to colleges and University, I was completely distracted by trying to get a hold of someone to get this worked out. That caused me to be to everything that day. I was to have the rental returned by 2:50 pm. But I was delayed because of being on the phone trying to get this worked out. In Louisiana the cell services is horrible in many areas, which meant I had to find a good service area and sit to be able to talk on the phone.
I couldn't drive the miles I needed because I was told I was going to be charged for them; so before going anywhere, I needed to make sure that it was not going to cost me another $100. Thrifty Car Rental is the most difficult to get a hold of and no one returns my calls, even after the numerous messages I have left. I made many attempts to contact Thrifty customer service, but was told that I had to go directly to the Shreveport, LA location.
I finally got a hold of a lady who said that she would honor the Expedia rate and the mileage would be unlimited. I would just have to bring in my gas receipts to show I stayed in the state of LA. I brought the vehicle back that evening at 8 pm instead of the 2:50 pm and was charged the 2 day rental. I received and signed for $147.55 to be paid. I checked my bank account and $182.61 was deducted. I have tried to call the Shreveport, LA location numerous times and receive an answering machine, which I have left multiple messages.
I then found out that they added $35.06 for 3 gallons of fuel, which when I left the car with them. I made sure it was on a full tank and I took a photograph of it being on a full tank. They are liars and thieves and I will never get back that valuable time that was supposed to be fun, but instead it was very stressful and miserable. I would like a refund of the $116.74 that they stole from me. It might be a small amount to them, but to me that is groceries for a week. I don't have the money to hire an attorney, but if Thrifty Car Rental is doing this to more people, just imagine how much extra money they are making. I wonder what the news media would say about this.

The car was fine and the initial rate I got via Orbitz was fine for a nearly-new Hyundai, out of Charleston Airport. However, with respect to pricing, I ended up paying an additional $25 per day so I would have full insurance, i.e., add Collision. As I told the man when I returned the car without a scratch, I pay that much insurance for a half year normally! We recently rented locally from Budget in the Midwest and there were a few dollars extra per day to add Collision. I will never get a Thrifty car again. By the way, I went on their website and found no place to register a complaint.

No stars! I rented from Thrifty Orlando Airport. Watch these guys very carefully! I went to Orbitz and there was a deal for a daily rate of $11.64 for specialty car. The deal was that once at the airport, I could rent whatever car they had available. Well, I should've read the Yelp reviews before because I believe the same guy Hamid, as a previous Yelp complaint noted (if he was Moroccan, it was him), was the one who attended to me. He showed me a grand Marquis and I told him what the Orbitz deal stated. He said okay. He showed me a mid-sized SUV and said "would you like this one?". I said yes and then he asked if I wanted additional insurance coverage. I told him no, because my credit card covered car rental ins.
When it came time to sign, he summarized what the boxes said. He even said to sign one that stated I was declining insurance coverage. I went through them trusting that what he said I was signing was legit. When I returned the car and noticed the charges, I asked to speak to the manager. Cristina, the girl at the front, rolled her eyes and the other lady clerk had this annoyed expression. She then came out and said the manager told her he wouldn't be able to do anything and I'd have to call customer service tomorrow. He didn't even come out to tell me. That was the first sign of being unprofessional. I insisted, she then went back and then told me that it'll be 20 minutes because he was on a phone call. I knew she was lying. He assumed I was in a rush to get my plane so he'd make me wait and go ahead. But guess what? I started chit-chatting with the next client who came by and all of a sudden, his 20-minute call became 5 minutes!
Wow! The power of some "friendly" conversation. Mark or Mike, the manager, came out very angry and said he couldn't do anything and would make sure to call customer service tomorrow. I called them the next day and customer service at 800-331-3550. Guess what? CSR Angela ended the call by hanging up on me. Let my experience save you the same treatment by this horrible rental car company with terrible customer service. By the way, they won't send you to a manager at the corporate office. They'll say "the manager has empowered us to handle the calls" as per Janeice. Don't do it.

My husband and six-year old son flew to San Francisco today. They arrived at the Thrifty counter with their rental agreement of $120 and change! What a deal! Well, he had cleared $285 on his credit card to make sure he had plenty of money. We had made the reservation through Orbitz. My husband was wary that there would be hidden charges and I assured him that it would not happen. I showed him the contract where it states, "amount due at the rental counter: $120.68."
He arrived at the counter, gave them his contract, and the lady asked for his driver's license and credit card. She ran the card and said that "it was declined." He said it was impossible; there was clearly enough money available on the card to cover the $120 cost. She then told him that they need to hold $380 on the card. When he returned the car, he would only be charged the quoted amount. He called me in a panic and I immediately added money to his credit card account. He stood in line again, waiting 40 minutes behind other renters who, surprisingly, were all being charged more than their quoted amounts.
There were 11 people ahead of my husband and son, and after this overcharge to each of them, he watched nine of them walk away to other companies. He again approached the counter and told her that he had added more money to his credit card and assured her that there was enough on the card now. She looked at him and said, "I'm sorry. The company's policy is to run a credit card once every 24 hours. You will have to wait until tomorrow to try again." This is the worst customer service in the world. No wonder the state of California is sinking. We went to National and got the same car for half the price. We will never rent from Thrifty again.

The rate I give this company would be zero. No one in this company appears to speak English as their first language. This makes resolving problems very difficult. I have been trying to get copies of the insurance policies that would be available to us in San Jose, Costa Rica. They will only provide a two line summary, which is not an insurance policy. I am told, over and over again, that I will get a copy of the policy when I get to Costa Rica. Obviously, that does not give me time to review my options. With forty people waiting behind me for their cars. They refuse to give me the phone number for the corporate offices, which I also cannot find online. We will probably just cancel this and take buses and cabs. Do not book with this company unless you explore this site for complaints, of which there are legion.

I rented a compact car from Thrifty San Diego Airport. It was supposed to be a compact, but they gave me a Dodge Caliber as an "upgrade". It had 42997 miles on it. If that was an upgrade, I do not know what their regular cars ran like. Maybe I had "sucker" written on my forehead. Mechanically, a very dangerous car. I rented without the appropriate air in the tires, and sounded like a disk shoe was grinding at every stop.
This car fishtailed at every turn, and I considered it very unsafe. Finally, I was able to balance the air in the tires, which knocked out the destabilization. What I liked especially was the key provided by Thrifty. Apparently, someone had lost the key with the remote. (not me) and as a consequence you have to open and lock all doors, including the driver's door, from the inside, as the key provided was obviously a poor duplicate, without any remote features. What was most interesting, and I hope all reading attorneys take note was that, when I complained at turn in, the lineman whipped out my bill and said "we were done".
I stood there and watched a vehicle which was unsafe then, and would be more unsafe in the future, be washed and vacuumed, and put back on the line. I pay attention to automobiles, as I was responsible for 228 vehicles in San Francisco, as the motor transport officer. That car, without a thorough inspection, and corrective action, was a potential death trap to an unsuspecting, or lesser experienced driver.
Whoever has the Thrifty franchise in San Diego airport, is going to cost himself a lot of money, due to what I deem shoddy automotive practices. My final shot is this, if you give a person an "upgrade", make sure it's a decent upgrade worthy of a professional company. My next car will be rented from a competent rental agency. Attorneys, if the Matrix crashes in new future, I'll happily testify. I don't expect anything from a company, who cares so little for the customers, and so much for themselves.

I rented a car for one day at Thrifty Rental at **** and was charged $201.00. That is right $201.00! The owner's son who serviced us was incredibly rude and obnoxious. I will never use Thrifty Car rentals again, anywhere and will tell everyone I know of my experience with this obnoxious representative of Thrifty.

The car reservation was booked as Travelocity itinerary ** and Thrifty confirmation ** for 4 days, unlimited mileage economy (Aveo), at MHT (Manchester, NH) for $100.78 (additional charge added at time of rental for SW frequent flyer credit of $1.50 per day). The total rental was for $106.78. The economy car was not available (in all fleet spaces filled upon return, there was not an economy present) and a 'free' upgrade was made to a larger car (Malibu, required as the smaller was not available). The car was returned on time and top off gas was added within the 10 mile radius.
Upon pick up, a delay was made as the car was returned by the prior renter or previously with damage on the left bumper/fender, requiring the single on duty staff to go to the garage to enter the information on the contract which he did not sign or annotate. Upon return, three people were at the airport counter (the garage staff leaves at 10 pm, not the 1 am posted hours, and local hours to 1 am are only staffed if a reservation is active). One was an accounting person who said she was already clocked out and could not do the contract return. The other two indicated they could not do a return (with the counter staffed and within open hours). Credit card charge was made a few days later of $138.39, not $106.78, a $30+ up charge. No contract copy was and has ever been provided from the vendor as indicated. This was not an after hours drop and the keys were surrendered 15 minutes before the end of the final rental day period.

Oct 17th-Oct 24th, my wife and I rented a car from Thrifty in Carolina, San Juan PR. We were urged by the Hispanic female at the counter that we were going to need an EZ-pass to get around the Island. The sales person then stated that if we didn't get the EZ-pass we were not going to be able to use some of the highways, since some of the tolls didn't take cash (EZ-pass only). We were told by the female sales person that the rental fee for the EZ-pass would cover all tolls and that it was a great deal. Not knowing the island we believed the sales person.
At the end of our trip we returned the vehicle paid for the rental and asked if there were any other fees like state tax, local sales tax or any other fees. We were told by the same female sales person the we were paid in full. However, on 11-08-11 I received a charge on my credit card for $4.35, with the caption "waiting for final amount from merchant". I contacted the office in Carolina San Juan and spoke to the same female sales person (it is only a 2-person office). When I asked about the charges, she stated that it was for the tolls and that the fees I paid for the EZ-pass was just to use it and not to pay the tolls.
When I tried to explain that that wasn't what was explained to us at the time of the rental, the female sales person then stated "You were stupid for not reading before you signed!". I asked for her name but she refused so I then asked to speak to the Manager. I was placed on hold, (at the small 2 man office on a Wednesday afternoon) where i waited for 31 minutes (time logged on Iphone) but I never spoke to the manager. I refuse to pay for the extra charges. We feel that we have been tricked into these extra charges. We will never do business with thrifty again.

I recently rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental at Adelaide Airport. I returned the car in perfect condition. There were no incidents, no accidents and there was no car park damage. I have never caused damage to a hire car.
The next day, having returned interstate, Thrifty phoned me to inform me they had deducted $220 from my Mastercard for 'damage' to the car. I asked what damage and they emailed an incident report form alleging a 'scrape on front left'.
I imagine they thought they were safe from scrutiny, having hired the car to someone who lives thousands of kms away who had since returned home. However I was able to get my son, who works in the Insurance and Loss Adjustment industry, and my daughter, a reliable witness and government employee, to inspect the alleged 'damage' to the car. It turned out to be 'a black scuff mark at the bottom of the bumper bar'. I will attach the photo later today.
It is obvious that Thrifty do not repair minor damage to their hire cars. Every time you hire a car, previous bumps and scrapes are listed on the documentation which are clearly bad enough to have enabled them to charge the renter for the alleged 'damage'. Some renters cannot afford the insurance and would be up for $1500 + per scratch, scrape or small dent. Thrifty pockets the money as these things don't get fixed. The cars are eventually sold or auctioned 'as is'.
I rang Thrifty and asked who their insurer was. I thought maybe an insurer was being defrauded. I found that Thrifty have their own insurance company, "Thrifty Insurance", which apparently has no phone number or address. So, Thrifty can pocket these nice little bonuses with no feelings of guilt.
I have now contacted the South Australian equivalent of the Department of Fair Trading and will take this matter as far as I need to in order to retrieve the funds stolen from me.
Beware of this scam. Make sure you stay with the car as it is inspected on return and photograph any alleged 'damage'. Contact your credit card company if you believe there has been fraud.

In August 2011, I rent a car from Thrifty and I had no problem to rent the car, when I had to verify proof of address with cable bill and I had no problem with that since I'm hold a debit card, other utility are not in my name and the cable bill is the only with my name, this weekend when I called Thrifty on asking what to bring, they ask me to bring an utility bill, so I ask if I could bring the cable bill again to verify my address and they said I need utility bills like gas or electric instead or major credit card so I can rent a car for that weekend, the gas and electric bills are not in my name and I don't have a major credit card, only a debit card and so I was denied service from rent a car from Thrifty, it was reasonable prices but the second time I try from Thrifty, they gave me a heck of a time over this.
I felt discriminated because of my disability and being on a fixed income, I wish I had enough for expense legal action against this company, unfortunately I don't and so I felt like they walk all over me taking advantage of my situation, fixed income and disability. To me, all rental car companies are not friendly with people of low income or fixed income, seniors, people with certain types of disabilities, the ones who have debit cards and no other major credit cards. I recommend to all that are on low income, fixed income, and disabled not to rent, they'll take advantage people with this and walk over you like they did with me.

I rent a car in Australia from Thrifty a year ago and passed an unmanned tollgate. I had no idea how to pay and no one helped me when I returned the car at 6 am at the airport. After a year, the credit card bill showed a change of $66 handling charge. I still need to find a way on how to pay for the $2.3 toll charge by myself. The customer service is hopeless in Thrifty.

I booked an air and car package from Expedia and paid the cost up front at the time of booking. When I arrived at Vancouver airport to pick up the car from Thrifty, the agent whose first language was not English (and very hard to understand) handed me the contract and said, "Initial here and sign here." I was never asked if I needed insurance or if I wanted insurance. I was the only customer there but everything was very rushed and they sent me out to the parking lot to get the car. We headed out in the car thinking everything was great. All paid and ready to go.
When we returned the car to the airport, we were met in the parking lot by a representative who asked, "Do you have the key?" He took the key and started doing his thing--checking the gas, mileage and so on. My husband and I unloaded our luggage and proceeded into the Thrifty desk. I went to a lady at the counter who greeted me with, "Do you have your white slip?" "What white slip?" I asked. "The guy outside should have given you a white slip." I went back outside to the parking lot to find the guy who took the keys. He handed me a slip with no comment. I went back inside and started to proceed toward the counter and the lady yells at me from the counter, "You're done. If you have your white slip, you can go!" That was the extent of customer service at their counter--very not friendly!
When we got home and we received the Visa bill, we had a charge for $553.69 for Thrifty car rental. I immediately called Expedia to confirm that I had paid for the car rental up front. They checked into it for me and told me that Thrifty had charged me for the insurance.

I recently rented a car from Thrifty that had 40,000 plus miles on it. A tire blew out and was not repairable. I was told to buy another tire of exactly the same make and specs, which I did. The company refused to reimburse me for the purchase even though I had offered to pick up the remaining 10,000 miles on the original tire warranted to 50,000. The reason given was that I had not purchased their roadside assistance program. I will not rent from these crooks again.

Pray that you don't experience car problems; Thrifty will do nothing. We have a car with 9T mi which won't start. Thrifty said that because we didn't purchase Roadside Assistance, it's our problem. And I can't trade cars, because Savannah doesn't have a Thrifty outlet.
We are hoping we can get back to Jacksonville for our flight. We've spent so much time with this hassle. Thrifty should refund our rental fee plus our airfare if we don't make our flight.

Thrifty Car Rental led me to believe I needed insurance for the vehicle. They told me it was $14.95/day then charged me $22.99/day. I kept all the contract behind the desk until I signed the receipt of my credit card. I was in a rush at the time & did not look at it until I got home. The internet site said $156.00 & it came to $294.64.
I would like the insurance charged back. I returned the car in the same shape I received it. I filled it up with gas like they wanted.

I'll rate their customer service less than one. I rented from Thrifty Car in San Antonio Airport, then was taken to the Downhill Blvd. office. The girl at the airport did't know my name, they didn't give me my contract back with the information. First off all, she told me I had to pay for the insurance that everyone had to. I had never bought insurance because I have my own, but since she said I had to, I did.
It was an extra of almost $24 a day which was more than my rental price but I needed the car. Then I told her that my knee was hurt and she said it's important to put me in a bigger car to make it easier on my knee. And also since I get discounts through work it would be cheaper. She never mentioned any type of fee. I told her that would be great, she then told me they would be holding over $300 but the balance would be refunded when I returned the car. So when I saw that price, I thought nothing of it.
As it turned out, I didn't have to pay for insurance and was charged and extra $15 a day upgrade charge and another type of insurance was added that I had no idea about. I needed the car an extra day making it a $5/day rental price. When I called to extend, I was told it would be over $400 and that's when I was told of all the charges.

Absolutely horrendous service at the San Diego Airport, Thrifty rental facility. I rented a car that has an engine that cuts off at 80mph, then the car doesn't recover. Driving on the LA freeways means sometimes, for safety, you have to accelerate. Thrifty never mentioned this. I called customer service all morning and was supposed to speak to a manager. A very rude Eduardo took my car keys, said he'll do nothing for me, and drove off with the car when I wanted to return it. He said I cannot speak to the manager and I had to walk off the property and literally walk into another company to get a ride to the airport so I could then rent another car. Absolutely the worst ever experience I have had in 27 years of renting cars. They should tell you that the engine will cut off at a certain speed. Sometimes, you have to accelerate to pass quickly - it doesn't mean the renter is speeding. Then, Eduardo printed me a bill for the entire rental time. And now, I have to spend hours and almost a whole day dealing with this. Horrendous.

I picked Nissan Versa from Thrifty at the location before you get to the actual airport of Houston. As I was driving off, I noticed that the gas gauge was barely full so I stopped to put some more gas in it. However, it wouldn't take anymore gas. By then, I realized that the gas gauge was faulty and I know that I should have reported it but I was running late for my road trip.
The car was returned on 10 Oct 11 at 8:58 AM by my husband and he proceeded to tell the lady that the gas gauge wasn't working properly and he would like for one of the technicians to check it while he was there. Tina from customer service said to my husband that it was not their job. My husband called me on his cell and proceeded to tell me about the problem. I could hear the customer service representative yelling at my husband, telling him that the car is not full. He said to her, "Go get your manager so we can get the gas gauge check while I'm here to prove to you that the gauge isn't working properly." She refused to do so.
While she is yelling at him, I am still on the other end of the cell listening to her. My husband turned around to her and said, "I'm not going to argue with you. I need to speak to someone else." I'm still on the cell so I heard her talking to another customer. She was arguing with another customer, telling the customer that he should have taken the car back to the Thrifty at the airport. The customer said that he brought it there because it was closer to him. She refused to listen and insisted on telling him what he should have done. This representative is very unprofessional and very rude to the customer. She doesn't know how to talk to the customers. I have called five times and left messages to the manager but I still haven't received a call back.

Beware of bait and switch! I can't believe that this thing happened. What horrible customer service and a company. I searched and reserved online for a mid-sized car for pickup at San Antonio, TX airport. Then, my husband called the 800 number and they gave him a $10 better deal for a week rental ($157 vs. $167 or so online) plus $60 free gas.
I got the confirmation and went to pick up the car today (10/3/11). At the lot, I asked if they have a Chevy Chase. She said, "No, we have a Kia." Then, the rep named Alex said that my reservation was for two days and not nine. Huh? I asked her, "Don't you think a 2-day rental for $157 is a bit excessive?" She said, "No! We are competitive with all the other rental companies. $69 for Alamo, $67 for blah, blah. After arguing with her for a few minutes, telling her that we even had two reservations for about the same price, I called my husband. I told him what was going on and asked him to come pick me up.
It was then she realized that I could leave. I had come on the airport shuttle and she fully believe that I was trapped. My husband reminded her that we had made another reservation online and for her to check that one. She finally did a search and found the other one--nine days at $167. "Oh, yeah. Here it is," she said. She said that they had a Kia and I asked her to look at that one.
She went on the lot and looked around. She then came back and said that they only had a Ford Fusion at 24 mpg. I asked if they had anything with a better mileage. She said that they have a Ford Focus at 28 mpg. I said, "Forget it." The safety rating is bad for those cars and the gas mileage is awful. I told her that what they attempted to do was wrong and that I was going to complain and give feedback so no one else would go through this.

I rented a car online at Thrifty in Boston because they had the best price. When I returned the car, my charges were $200 over the price quoted online. Luckily, I had printed out the agreement with costs with me but still had to argue with the representative. Eventually, the manager, who was very rude, get the charges reduced. They had tacked on several additional fees.
To add to the terrible experience, today, I received a notice from Thrifty that the credit card that I had used to reserve the car (I actually paid cash for the rental) has now been charged $27.50 for a $2.50 toll charge that I was never made aware of and a $25 "administrative fee." I will contest this charge, and I will never rent from Thrifty again. The irony of the experience was that the Thrifty employees wore buttons with a customer service message on their lapels.

Be aware when you rent from Thrifty and use a debit card. Thrifty will run a credit report (hard Inquiry) on your credit score. Thrifty, per their customer service today, has a deal with Equifax and that as soon as they are presented with debit card for the payment, they run a credit report on you.

There are numerous reports about Thrifty Car Rental ripping off people after they return the vehicle at the drop-off location. Make sure that you get a signed copy by the staff after inspecting the car for full gas tank, any hidden fees, etc. Do the inspection with the staff personnel and get their names as well. If possible, take pictures of the rental car at the time of drop-off including the mileage, full gas tank needle, and may be even from outside of the vehicle showing no signs of damage. Do not leave or sign anything unless you have made sure of all the necessary things just like you do before renting it. Make sure your contract that you signed has everything as mentioned at the time of reservation; otherwise, they will charge you and you are responsible for not reading it.

I rented a vehicle and asked about full coverage insurance. We were told that if anything happens to the vehicle, bring it back, drop off the keys, walk away and they would take care of everything. We purchased the insurance but I had an accident. I called the assistance line's office in Indianapolis and brought the vehicle back.
A week later, I got a call and was told that the insurance was voided. I did not have a police report--I was never told that (by anyone at any time). I think that their employees misrepresented their company. Now, my insurance has to cover it. I called Thrifty and talked to a lady (I have her name). I was told that her supervisor would call me. It never happened. Now, I get a half threatening letter from some company. I feel that I was ripped off.

I was going to rent a car on August 9 but I called and cancelled. I saw a charge on my credit card bill on September 2 for $38.79 and called. They said we were charged for that day because we didn't cancel. I said I did but that I needed a confirmation number which I never got. So, in the beginning, they told me, "We never charge if you never take a car." Watch out for them.

For three consecutive weeks, I rented from Thrifty Car Rental at Denver International Airport. They didn't ask me about their toll pass or try to sell it to me (I wish they had). Almost all of the other rental companies at DIA will automatically enroll you, and charge you only if you use the toll roads. For Thrifty, if you don't enroll they hit you with a $25 "toll violation" for every toll booth you go through.
For me, it cost for a total of $450 (3 tolls each way x 2 ways x 3 weeks)! It's not like you can actually stop and pay someone (which I would have been happy to do), since the tolls are completely unmanned. They refused to remove the charges. My calls to the management, and my complaint to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) were met with the proverbial, "it's in the contract, so tough".

I got a car on Orbitz for Thrifty Car Rental, and bought their insurance. They only had a truck that had just been returned and it hadn't been inspected nor cleaned. They sold me their maximum coverage, Loss Damage Waiver, for $24.95/day because the policy I got wasn't enough. They said that LDW would cover me for bumper to bumper coverage for any damage, loss or collision. I returned it and they didn't do an inspection with me.
I didn't hear from them for five days when they called to say that there were two dents at the back of it. I told them that there was no new damage to the truck. The lady conned me into filling out a claims form because she kept telling me that it didn't matter what had happened, it would still be covered and paid for because I had bought their LDW. I wrote what I told her on the claims form about there being no new damage on the vehicle.
I just got a letter in the mail yesterday from the Subrogation Management for a bill of $800 saying that they have deemed their own insurance (LDW) invalid for this claim. I called the Thrifty people who rented it to me and lied to me. He said that he found the damage and took a picture of the truck the day after I returned it. But he didn't know why their corporate claims didn't validate the coverage.

I had a breakdown of my family vehicle 200 miles from home. I had to leave it at the repair shop. I reserved a car from Thrifty online, on the assumption that it would only take a day or two for the repair to be made (needed to get back to Dallas to work). Before I picked up the car, I found out that it was going to take longer for the repair than planned. So, I requested to keep the car longer at the time I rented it. The lady at the desk said that there would be no additional "late return fee". The contract I signed said I picked up the car on 8/21 and the rental expired on 8/26 at 7pm. I returned the car before noon on 8/26. I was in a hurry to get to the repair shop to pick up my car. I didn't pay attention to the receipt. But when I did, I noticed there was a 3-day late fee of $32.97. I called customer service, but they will not budge on the charge.

I booked a car through rentalcars.com. At first it seemed as if everything was going to be great.
When I arrived at Thrifty, the CSR didn't seem to know about my reservation. After much searching, she finally gave a car. On the site, I had booked a navigation system and was charged for it but at the counter, she didn't have any clue that a navigation system was booked with the car and the amount quoted to me as the cost of the rental was far more than rentalcars.com had quoted.
When I questioned it, I was told that the insurance was the reason for the price difference and so I accepted it and got a vehicle. This was Saturday, August 20, 2011 at around 11:50 p.m. On Sunday morning at 11:31 a.m., I was in a car crash where a caravan lost control of his car behind me and slammed into my car sending me into a spin. When my car stopped, the caravan came around and hit me for a second time. After my three passengers and myself got out of the car and a passerby contacted the police, I attempted to contact roadside assistance who had me on hold for twenty minutes and still no one came to the line.
The officer, after taking our statements, called a cab to take me and my party off of the I-95 and to our destination. I called Thrifty once I arrived at my point of safety ($40 later) and was told by the agent there that I had no insurance on the car and when I questioned what I had paid at the pick up counter, I was told that it was a form of insurance but not one to assist me in this traffic accident, and that I should call the claims department on Monday at 10 a.m. for further information.
On Monday morning, I went to Thrifty (the location where I received the car initially) and gave a report to the representative there. I asked about the insurance and me being billed since I did not receive nor did I want a replacement vehicle as my trip was being cut short. I was told that I do have insurance but for the other person's car and since I was not responsible for the accident, I had nothing to worry about as the driver of the caravan would have to pay for Thrifty's car. As for my billing, I was told that I would be charged for the car rental up to the time of the accident and since I had returned the navigation system when I made the report I would only be charged for that as well up to the time of the accident. The representative said it would be $96. She then called a taxi cab for me. I asked for copies of the police statement and the report that she took, which I received.
On Friday, August 26, 2011 I received a billing from Thrifty for $214.98 and every attempt to call the location proved fruitless. This is not what I had expected. By far I am more than disappointed. I have been robbed.

On April 28th 2011, I reserved a car for a business trip in Los Angeles. I presented my debit card to do the transaction. Money was in my account and the personnel took my card, ran it through with a hold of $400.00 on it, and the card was accepted. Very good!
On August 19th, I reserved another car to go to Chicago on another business trip. I presented my debit card to do the transaction. Money was in my account and the personnel took my card, ran it through with a hold of $350.00 on it, and the card was denied! I asked why, because in the past three years or so I rented cars from Thrifty and had no trouble at all and I mentioned my recent Los Angeles trip and that it should not have been a problem.
What got me so angry is that they would not process it again until after a 24 hour period! Here I am, on my way to a very important business meeting in Chicago and at the last-minute, I cannot get a car! I was told that it was policy! I was told that my card was verified by a credit card company -equifax- and they denied my card! I tried explaining my situation to the desk personnel but they could not help at all. I took my complaint to supervision/management and here is what they told me, "sorry but it is policy." They could care less about anyone's job because of their policy.
Mind you, I came to Thrifty, reserved my cars with them for years, and now I have been jolted by their policy that they cannot make an exception to the rule! The money was in my account and I even offered to pay cash up front but they refused that offer! They wanted a major credit card or no car! I do not carry major credit cards but only my debit card with a visa logo (same as cash).
What kind of greedy scam has the credit card companies contracted with these major car rentals and why would these major car rental companies risk being forced to go out of business with such agreements and policies!
Something ought to be done to this car rental company or any car rental company who are determined to make sure not to address any pressing situation such as mine. A free week of rental should be given to me for putting me through such an ordeal and if nothing is done, I will take this up to congress. This is an outrageous customer support.

When I rented the car through a link from the Southwest Airline web site, I was quoted a price of $52 for 2 days. Shortly after I left the town where I was staying to go to the airport, a warning message came on about a problem with the gas intake valve. I stopped at the next exit that had a gas station and was fortunate to find a mechanic on duty on a Sunday morning. He checked the intake valve and assured me that the car was safe to drive. As a result of that stop, I used up the time I had allotted for filling the gas tank near the airport. I have always returned rental cars with full tanks in the past but I had not planned on making 2 stops.

Thrifty car rental charged me for insurance that I did not want and a per day charge for extra driver after telling us it was a one-time charge. They will not take one cent off the bill because they said I signed the ticket. True, I did. But before I signed, I asked the man if this was the same price as on my reservation and the answer was yes. My suggestion would be to stay away from Thrifty Car Rental. I'll never go back and will dispute the charge with the credit card company.

We had a rental car reservation with Thrifty for 2 pm on 8-10-11 at the Des Moines airport. The counter agent (male, didn't get name) told us we wouldn't be able to get a vehicle for 3-4 hours! He was extremely rude and actually said, "Do you think I can just make you a car?" We were not able to wait 3-4 hours and had to find another rental car. We found one at National which cost us $542 versus the Thrifty reservation price of $146. No way to treat long-time customers!

I pre-arranged a car at the Denver International Airport (Vehicle # 333174) on August 14 - 17 2011. The agent asked about Pass 24 for three days at $9.99. I explained in detail where I was going -- Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Golden, Co. etc. -- and was told that I would definitely need this $29.97 charge. I questioned the agent in detail and asked, "Will I be traveling on the roads where this is needed? Her answer was, "Definitely. You will need this."
400 miles later when we turned in the car, not only did we not travel on any road that required a Pass 24, we never saw one.I would not be as upset as I was had I not questioned the agent in detail about the pass and had she not insisted that I would definitely need it. Either she did not know about the pass, or she was lying just to make a $30-sale.
Ironically, when we turned the car in and traveled back to the airport with another family, the issue about Pass 24 came up. They told us that they asked the same questions that we did and they went to the same places we visited. But the agent explained to them to not waste their money on Pass 24 because they would not need it. I believe that the agent misrepresented the product and our $9.97 should be returned.
Sincerely,William **

I rented a vehicle from the Thrifty at 148 W. 83rd Street, Manhattan, NY, on July 5th 2011. I picked the vehicle up and drove approximately 30 miles up Palisades Parkway where I noticed the brakes on the vehicle were failing and making a metal grinding sounding. I was planning to have this vehicle for twelve days and knew that it would not be safe to drive this vehicle. I called and requested a new vehicle. After many phone calls and a three hour wait on the side of the road, a new vehicle finally arrived. The vehicle was a Chevrolet Impala.
On the evening of Friday, July 8th 2011, at approximately 6:00pm, I was driving North on the New York State Thruway in the pouring rain, when an 18-wheel semi merged into me, side swiping the passenger side of the vehicle. The metal bar from the rear of the semi-truck shifted the metal around the front wheel well forward, thus making the front right tire unable to move and the car not drivable. A state trooper arrived and took a report.
I contacted Thrifty Road Side Assistance at this time. The woman I spoke with at Thrifty said that they would be sending a tow truck with a new car on it for me and would be picking up the damaged disabled vehicle. The New York State Trooper informed me that the New York State Thruway was a controlled access road meaning there is only one tow truck that is authorized to tow on that road and Thrifty's tow truck would have to pick the vehicle up from the lot where the authorized tow truck would be taking it. I informed the Thrifty representative and after an hour wait she called me back to inform me that there would be nothing they could do for me since it was so late on a Friday evening and that I would have to wait until Monday morning to get another rental. I explained to her that I was half way between Manhattan, NY and Middletown, NY where I was staying during that leg of my trip. I explained that I was stranded and needed a vehicle to get to my hotel. I further went on to explain that it was dark, raining and I am a single woman on the side of the New York State Thruway. The only solution the representative provided was that maybe the tow truck driver could take me to a diner where I could wait until Monday morning (48 hours).
Completely appalled that this woman would even mention such an asinine and idiotic idea, I got very upset and demanded to speak with her supervisor. After explaining the situation the supervisor said that she had no authority to help me and would call the Manhattan manager on duty. After speaking with the city manager on duty, the supervisor informed me that he said he was not willing to do anything for me and asked me to call back Monday morning and maybe he would have a change of heart. I was furious that this company was ok with me being stranded on the side of a busy state thruway in the dark, and in the rain with my luggage and the manager who could help me instead told her to repeat his rude remark to me. I had no other option but to call a taxi to pick me up and take me 50 miles to Middletown where my hotel was located. The cab ride cost me $164.00.
The next morning, July 9th 2011, I tried to contact Thrifty to see about getting another car, I was told that the manager would have to help me, and he was not in. The associate took my name and number and said that he would call me back when he came in around 9am. At 9:30am, I had not heard anything and needed a vehicle, I called Thrifty again and was told that the manager still had not come in. At 11am, I called Thrifty again and I was told that the manager was not available and would call me back. This was the last day of the hotel I had booked in Middletown and I was due to check into another hotel in New Jersey that night, so I needed to have a vehicle. I called Thrifty at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm that day and each time I was told only a manager could help me and one would return my call. I explained the dire situation I was in and how many times I had previously called and I was assured someone would call me back within the hour. By 4pm that afternoon, I called and made one last attempt for Thrifty to rectify this horrible situation they had put me in and I was given the run around for the last time.
I wanted my contract cancelled and I would never do business with them again if they were to send me a bill for the three days I had a vehicle. I explained that I picked up on the July 5th, and since rental agreements are for 24-hour periods, I should have been billed from the 5th to the 6th, the 6th to the 7th and the 7th to the 8th, 3 days total. The associate, Christopher (at the 83rd Street location) said he agreed that it's what I should be charged and would speak with his manager and have him call me back to finalize the bill; never heard from him.
I called Thrifty's 83rd Street location and their 800 number on July 11th at 10 am and 2:30 pm, July 12th at 9:30am and 3pm, on July 13th at 11am and 4pm, on July 14th at 9am and 1:45pm, on July 15th at 10:45am and 2:45pm, on July 18th at 10am, July 19th at 10am, July 20th at 10am, July 23rd at 10am and finally on July 25th, I called Bank of America to file a dispute. I will not be able to waste any more time with such a lousy organization and needed this to be taken care of.
I went to Avis and had to rent another vehicle for much more than I should have paid because it was short notice and from an airport with a tax rate of 30%! The taxi expense and the Avis rental expense were all incurred because Thrifty would not make right on their contractual obligation to provide me with another vehicle.

I rented a Hyundai Accent from Shreveport Regional Airport on August 5, 2011 to be returned on August 8, 2011. On August 7, 2011, I returned to my rental car after taking my grandson to a movie, only to find that the car would not start. It happened to be that the temperature in Shreveport that day was 107 degrees. I called the 24-hour roadside assistance helpline, only to be told that they could not help me, and if they sent out assistance, I would have to pay for the assistance. I find that this is totally unacceptable.
I was told that I could NOT get another car and that they could not help me because there was no manager on duty (unbelievable). When I returned the car and went to the agent at the airport, she told me that she would have a manager get in touch with me, and to date no one has addressed my problem. I am asking that this problem be addressed through corporate, and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanking you for your attention.

I reserved a car for $325 at London Heathrow. I picked up the smallest car and was charged more than 3 times the amount my contract said. I did pop a tire and was charged $150, I get that. My final bill was $1077. I talked with the manager and he was not willing to assist. He said a charge was tacked on for roadside assistance that I never asked for or used. I was charged for going into the Eurotunel and was never told that would be extra. I emailed him and no results. Totally gauged me on a Vauxhall Corsa tiny car. I was also charged a premium fee since it was an airport! Where else do people pick up rental cars? Also add an admin fee!

We rented a car for three days, asked if there was a charge for a second driver. We were told that there was no charge. Upon returning, we found a charge for an additional $10/day. I was told that nobody would say that there wasn't an additional charge (liars).
They refused to do anything about it. Customer service sucked. Don't ever use them.

I booked a car from Thrifty through rentals.com. I normally use Avis, who are fantastic. I booked the car for 320 euros and it said I was insured.
When I got to the desk, they told me I had to take out extra insurance out for 240 euros. I have Amex prestige cover, which I got especially for car hire. It covers you for c/d/w and excess. Avis recognize this every time. Unfortunately, they were booked out. I needed the car for work so I was stuck. I even went to the Avis desk, showed them my policy and said they accept it--why won't you?
Well, they were just trying to rip me off. Disgraceful. I will never book with Thrifty ever again.

We arrived at George Bush Airport in Houston to rent the car reserved. From the moment we approached the counter, we were met with numerous challenges by their employee Emma. Her demeanor and attitude indicated that she was going to find every possible problem to handle our rental.
My family members, who travel over thrice a year to the States on tourist visits and rent cars in Florida, NYC and Texas, were declined because supposedly, the driver's licenses were expired! Not so...international DLs are different and some countries do not carry expiration dates.
We signed a contract that stated NO SMOKING or you will face a $ 250 charge. When we got the car, it smelled awful and there was no time to change it or find another minivan. We were on our way to DFW to catch a flight four hours later.

I took my boyfriend to Miami for the weekend to visit family, and celebrate his birthday. I rented a car from Thrifty at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. The cost of the rental for two days and seven hours was $259.88, plus $30 in gas and $30 to park where we stayed.
Upon arrival, we were very happy with the quick service, and the car we received (This was also the first time renting a car for either one of us).
The complaint occurred when we went to return the vehicle. I used my seven month old Droid X cell phone (approximate is value $500) to locate the closest gas station to the airport. Filled the tank, and proceeded to the drop-off area.
I grabbed some papers from the console where my phone was to, and left the phone in the car. We walked through the car rental building and to the shuttle to the terminals. On the shuttle, I realized I left my phone; we stayed on the shuttle back to the car rental building, all of this was at the most 15 minutes. At the counter, I told the attendant, who went to go look through the car.
After 15 minutes of waiting, there I was told the phone was not in the car. If our flight had not been delayed, we would've also missed our flight. However, from the 15 minutes I dropped the car off to the round-trip on the shuttle back to the rental area, my phone was missing.
It never even made it to lost and found. I'm not too surprised at the response I received from customer service the next morning, "Sorry your phone is your responsibility."
I would think Thrifty would hold its employees to a higher standard.

I reserved a car online at Thrifty website. The airport would not honor the rental because the rate was very low. Thrifty even emailed me a confirmation the day before my trip but the airport manager refused to accept this low offer. He would not even discuss it face to face but only by phone even though I was right there at the counter! He told me to call corporate office and he also said that I reserved it from a third-party which was a lie as I used Thrifty website!
I called the corporate office and they said that they would not honor it. I was stranded without a car.

I told the agent in Albuquerque, New Mexico, that I did not want an insurance. He said that he did not get it either when he rented. Somehow, I must have signed an insurance waiver which I thought waived my need for insurance. I also signed a separate paper for what I later determined as the exact cost of the extra coverage which the company representatives denied. I thought it was the cost of the rental. They claimed that all charges were presented only on a computer screen I signed. This was not the case but they erased their videotape. They bundled up my more comprehensive paper receipt before I could see it and told me where the car was, and put the key on top of the folder containing the receipt.
Upon returning the car, I discovered the added optional charge and I was told by the manager and agent that they would call me that evening before the added charge went to the credit card. When there was no call, I called my leasing agent who told me that the manager I spoke with had now gone on vacation. Other people I spoke with later said that the manager had not gone on vacation.
After about five months of letters and threats to contact the Attorney General's Office in New Mexico, my insurance waiver charges, which they say they do not sell insurance, was returned to my credit card. The credit card company was of no help. The very hard-line of the agents and consumer complaint representatives with Thrifty could be discouraging to many.

On May 2011, we rented a Thrifty Car for 5 days to attend a graduation on the West Coast. We returned the car 3 hours late and were essentially charged for another 24 hour period. Their system could not handle proration of charges. It was impossible to reach customer service and our complaint to the credit card company was not successful.

I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental in Cozumel, Mexico for 10 days and agreed to pay $339.88 (originally, they wanted $381.79 but agreed to the lesser charge since I decided it was too high for complete coverage and had decided to purchase only the liability insurance. Once they lowered to the price to $339.88, I agreed to get complete coverage). When I checked out on June 2, 2011, the amount on the receipt was in pesos and a notation in dollars for $339.88. I told the manager that if the charge was more than $339.88, that I would dispute the bill and he told me that due to the rate of exchange, the amount would not be for $339.88, the amount I agreed to.
Once home, I checked my credit card account and found the charge was for the original amount of $381.79. What irked me was the amount in pesos (based on the exchange rate that day) was correct, it was for $381.79, but the notation was for $339.88 in dollars. My feeling is that the manager never intended to rent me the car for $339.88, knowing I wouldn't check the exchange rate when I dropped off the car. Thrifty Car Rental denied my claim stating they don't intervene when dealing with currency exchanges. I believe the manager intentionally ripped me off for over $40.00 (over 10% of the amount I agreed to pay). I will never rent from Thrift Car Rental again, and I plan to visit Cozumel each year now that I am retired.
Word of warning to those traveling in Mexico, know what the current exchange rate is (approximately), and carry a calculator to figure what you are purchasing in pesos. Many businesses will tell you they are charging you ** dollars but will pad an extra 10% or 20% by increasing the amount you pay in pesos if you pay by credit card. Example: $130.00 is about 1,495 pesos. The business will put down 1,725 pesos, or $150.00. You just got overcharged by $20 more than the price you agreed to pay and won't know it until you get home or check out your credit card online.

We returned our rental car with no damages, fully released by them. They said they would credit us our deposit in 24 hours after the return. It was deducted from our credit card on November 29th, then without notification or authorization, the charge was reapplied to our credit card. I have contacted them multiple times and they say they see by the documentation I forward where this should not have happened. But to date, I have never received the credit. The last email I received said they would not issue a refund. As we are in the US and this occurred in Mexico, I don't know what recourse I have. The amount they charged for deposit is $380.

I've found it very difficult to find Thrifty/DTAG contact email addresses so I hope you can help me or otherwise forward this email to the appropriate person(s). I am writing regarding a recent poor experience I had renting from your franchise (I assume it is a franchise operation) at the airport at San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. Since I assume that Thrifty's business is built upon great customer service and satisfaction, I assumed someone at DTAG would be interested in hearing about this. In fact, maybe you are already aware, given that during my 2 visits to the Thrifty office in Cabo I was clearly not the only dissatisfied customer. Perhaps too, the Thrifty in San Jose del Cabo does not consider or care that their behavior reflects back poorly on your corporate brand.
I have traveled regularly for both business and pleasure for many years now and regularly rent a vehicle. I have never in all those times had an experience even remotely as poor as I did with Thrifty in San Jose del Cabo.
Part 1 - The Pickup I booked online for 1 week (March 16-23) was given a terrific quote of $92.62 "estimated grand total" for "estimated mandatory charges" including fees and taxes. The email confirmation also reminded me to "review all applicable terms and conditions for this location" with a hyperlink that I clicked on passing me to the part of the email that listed those terms and conditions as "N/A". I booked with Thrifty based in large part of this very competitive quote.
However, when I arrived to pick up my vehicle I was told of an additional $13/day mandatory liability insurance fee (PLI) that was non-negotiable and had to be paid. This was shown to me in vague wording on the second page of a 2 page rental agreement print out for my booking that I had not seen before and was certainly not included in my online booking confirmation email (which I still have and am happy to forward). Of course, that fee essentially doubled my quote. I declined the other coverages as American Express covers them.
During the period of time (approximately 15 minutes) that I was arguing fees and hidden small print, I listened to 3 other renters in similar arguments with the other rental agents. I've done some investigating online but cannot get a solid answer of whether this liability insurance is a Mexican government requirement, a Thrifty requirement, or a Thrifty San Jose del Cabo requirement. Whichever one it is, it is absolutely a poor form to include such a substantial mandatory fee hidden with a lengthy small print terms and conditions sheet that is not presented to the customer when they book.
What's interesting in hindsight is the number of locals who came up to me as I was leaving the arrival gates asking if I was renting a car and from whom and, when I told them, warning me that Thrifty would be charging me extra fees. I assumed they just wanted my business and would say what they needed to make the sale but it turns out I should have listened.
Part 2 - The Return. The official exchange rate on the day of my return was 11.956 pesos to $1 dollar. Upon my return I received a final bill for 2,883.23 pesos. Firstly, I don't know why I was quoted everything in US dollars up to that point only to then receive a final bill in pesos. My best guess is that allows the franchise to again increase the charge by using an inflated exchange rate. At the official exchange rate for the day, 2,883.23 pesos converts to $241.15, far above the combined charge of rate plus PLI fee of $183.62US. This is confirmed in the Thrifty return receipt which quotes the random PLI charge at 169 pesos/day which converts to $14.14US, not the $13/day I was told.
After discussing these charges with the desk agent, I asked why I was still waiting for my bill and was informed the car was being inspected for damages. He said there were two stains on the car, one by the gas tank and one on the back windshield. They appeared to be bird droppings dried in the sun, but the agent said they "might" be from an air conditioned dripping on the car. After much huddling and whispering among 5 different Thrifty people, the agent informed me that the "damage" was $105US, a number he showed me on a calculator. When I asked him how he arrived at that number he said he "had a guy". When I asked what gave his guy the expertise to arrive at such a quote from a brief examination of the stain, he provided no answer.
Anytime I am expected to pay for any damages, I expect a competitive quote. This was an arbitrary number with no basis in fact. I took pictures of the stain as well as the license of the rental car.
Unbelievably, the Thrifty agent suggested that I could clean the car myself and not incur the charge. I've never in all the times of returning a rental car had it suggested to me that I am responsible for cleaning a car. The car was not damaged. It need to be cleaned. That's part of the service I expect when I rent a car versus buying a car or borrowing one. Given I had a flight to catch, I declined the agent's offer.
Then the agent presented me with the second bill for damages, this one for 1,665pesos (1,500pesos + 11% IVA taxes) or $139.26US. Again, I asked how it had been $105 and was now, in a matter of a few minutes, much (32%) more. He said it was the exchange rate which, of course, simple math shows not to be true.
I travel regularly to Mexico. Every time I've been quoted a price in US dollars (shops, restaurants, booking agencies, etc. ), I've been able to receive and pay the bill in US dollars. It's not clear to me why Thrifty is the one exception here, unless it is again to benefit from an inflated exchange rate arbitrage program.
So, all-in-all, a $92.62 "estimated grand total" with no terms and conditions quote ended up being a 4,548.23 pesos charge, or $380.41. This is a 410% premium over the original quote!
Needless to say, I will not be renting from Thrifty in San Jose del Cabo/Cabo San Lucas again and will make the same recommendation to friends and colleagues. In addition to everything I've outlined above, I found the San Jose del Cabo desk staff to be devoid of any concern for the customer, caring only about the sale. I am hoping you or someone else at DTAG can give me valid reasons not to make a more global decision to end renting with Thrifty Car Rental and to recommend the same policy for my company and employees. I do hope something will be done to improve the customer experience in San Jose del Cabo. It reflects extremely poorly on your company's brand which up to now I viewed favorably.

I rented a car in Aguadilla, PR from the February 3rd through the 13th. I returned the car in perfect conditions but when checking my Master Card statement, there was an additional charge of $500.00. They claim that the car was damaged, but I have never received a report with pictures from them. I have called and talked with Mr. Saez and he promised, like 15 days ago, that he was going to mail me a report.
As of today, I have not received anything from them. I also faxed and mailed a complaint letter with no response. This is very unacceptable to receive an extra charge and no evidence of the alleged damage to the car.

I booked our vehicle for $213.68 and when we got to the airport on 12/18, the bill was $417.02; my taxes were different and they charged me for my husband driving and I was never advised of a charge for an additional driver. I need help.

I went to rent a car due to my car breaking down and this particular location took advantage of my situation. The guy at the counter was as sweet as can be, talking to me and my husband, saying such nice things about our newborn baby, how he wanted to have another child with his wife, made us feel comfortable and he gained our trust to later back stab us in the back. He did not explain to us that we were going to pay 26-27 dollars a day on insurance for our vehicle. I told him that I wanted to decline the insurance since I had already chosen insurance when I made the reservation online and he said that is fine.
Once we finished the approving my transactions since I was paying with debit card he said, "Okay, you sign here that you are declining the insurance and your husband here". So I, trusting him that that was what it was I signed, lo and behold, I got charged for insurance a few days later when I saw the transaction on my bank account. I called and they said that I signed for it and I explained to them why would I have double insurance on my vehicle and they said, "Well, you signed for it." And I said that I did not sign for that. I signed for what he was telling me which was declining the insurance. And they told me, "Well, ma'am you should have read before signing".
Well, I agree now, not to trust anyone. The guy sure is a hustler, Hispanic light skin, baldy guy. Don't let him trick you the way he did us by being all nice and gentlemen like, thinking he was concerned about our situation. He took advantage of our vulnerability and now it will take longer to fix our vehicle due to his insensitivity to our situation. I wonder if he gets commission from getting people to sign for that insurance.

We rented a Chevy Tahoe on 11/2010, while we were loading our bags we noticed paint missing from the rear bumper. We asked the attendant to come over and take a look. He was too much of a lazy ass to get up and take note of the damage. He said, don't worry we know all about it and we go on our merry way. To make a long story short, yesterday I get a bill from thrifty for $411.30 to repaint the bumper. Myself and 5 other adult witnesses can testify to the prior damage. They are demanding me to pay the 411.30.

I have experienced the worst customer service ever. I was treated rudely. I returned the car an hour early but since the system was not working, he made me wait for 45 minutes. Then he shouted at me for filling up 1 liter less than what was required. He threatened me that he would never give me a car again. He even forced me to get the car filled up. When I said I would complain, he spoke more rudely. I hated the service. I will never rent from this branch again.

I reserved a car online on their website. When I arrived to pick up the car, I explicitly told the man at checkout that I did not want any additional coverage, as my car insurance covers rentals. The man did not listen to me, and put $62 extra charges on my bill. He did not verbalize the total estimated cost to me (which I would have recognized as incorrect), only that at $250 hold would be placed on my account, which seemed reasonable.
When I went through the agreement screens on their computer, the man pushed me through the screens, telling me to just hit agree and saying generic things like "That's just for the hold on your card" and "That's just about the coverage" all of which I interpreted to mean that he'd entered what I'd requested.
Immediately after going through the screens, I looked at the bill and saw that it was nearly 3 times what I'd expected. I went back to challenge the bill and they told me there was nothing I or they could do to fix the error because I'd agreed on the computer. The cost of the rental was $154, almost 3 times what it should have been. They refused to correct the charges or allow me to file a complaint.

I booked an intermediate car on Thrifty.com on October 3 for November 10t at 10:30 pm and returning it on November 14. Estimated total expense was $172.38 which included 3 days of loss damage waiver of $36 total. My flight was delayed and I was just able to get into the door of the rental agency before it closed for the night at 11:00 pm. This office had pre-started the contract at 5:56 am on the 10th not at 11:00 pm when I picked the car up. The damage waiver went up to $14.95 a day from the thrifty.com rate of $12. In addition, the contract stated that I would now have to pay for 5 days of damage waiver instead of the 3 days on the original quote. When I complained to the agent, she said that the additional costs were due to taxes,a lie. I had no choice to get the vehicle since it was 11:00 pm at night. I brought the vehicle in a little after 8 to avoid 4 hours of charge after 5:56 am on Sunday.
I believe I was overcharged 2 hours at $4.73 an hour plus tax plus over charged for 5 days of damage waiver at $74.95 instead of $36 for 3 days as quoted.

On 10/21/2010 at 11:15 am, I rented a car from Thrifty. I was supposed to return the car on 10/22/2010 at 10:00 am, but due to reasons out of my control, we returned the car at 1:52 pm. The general rental requirements of the general policies say: "Rental Rates: Daily Rental rates are based on a 24-hour "rental day" starting at the time of rental. The minimum charge is one day, plus mileage if applicable. The renter will be charged for each hour and/or any part of an hour in excess of a rental day the renter keeps the vehicle until the vehicle is returned up to the applicable daily rate. Mileage charges, if applicable, will be the number of miles driven as determined by the odometer readings at the beginning and end of the rental.
A return change fee of $15 will apply if you return 24 hours or more prior to your reserved return date and time. If you return 24 hours or more after your scheduled return date and time, a return change fee of $10.99 per day will apply ($54.95 maximum), in addition to any other rental charges. If the renter fails to comply with the conditions applicable to the rate, including any geographic driving restrictions, a mileage charge, surcharge or other rates may apply. "So, I expected that I would be charged for the time I exceeded the scheduled return time, that is, 3 hours and 52 minutes.

I made five phone calls to the Thrifty international phone line reservation from home in the US beforehand to make a rental car reservation, and when I made my reservation, I stated that my credit card would serve for insurance and I would decline the rental insurance, and none of the agents mentioned any problem with this. In addition, I arranged to get a 10% discount using my American Express card. Arriving at the Thrifty counter in Munich Airport Terminal 2, I was told that because the Munich airport location had had numerous problems with credit card companies refusing to pay insurance claims, that the Munich airport location's policy was to require written proof from the credit card company that that rental car would be covered.
In addition, I was told that under no circumstances could American Express be used for this, only MasterCard or Visa. As the Munich airport has no free Internet, I had to sign up for a one-hour paid service for $11.15 and downloaded both the MasterCard and Visa documents online, to show that both of my credit cards covered rental cars. When I showed this to an agent, she said I had misunderstood, and that I would require a written proof specifically for this rental reservation. As an alternative, the Thrifty insurance was $250, doubling the price of my rental. When I asked for a cheaper rate, I was told I could pay $150, but I would be charged a $1200 deductible against my credit card in case of an accident.
At this point, I gave up and went to one of the other rental car companies in the terminal and quickly obtained a rental car for with none of the run-around about insurance. If the Thrifty international reservation line had let me know during my 5 calls before the reservation while in the US that I would have to have written proof specifically covering this reservation, I have no doubt that I could have obtained this ahead of time. Also, if Thrifty has a special arrangement favoring American Express cards, why did the Munich site say that even with written proof of a specific coverage that American Express cards could not be used for insurance?

This is not the way to treat an old man with an incurable cancer, or anyone else for that matter! I am a 71-year old male from Alabama currently being treated at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for incurable stage IV cancer. On July 1, 2010, I rented a car from Thrifty at the Houston Hobby Airport to drive to M.D. Anderson for my chemotherapy treatments. The next day, July 2nd, Houston's streets were beginning to flood as a result of heavy rains from hurricane Alex. Concerned that I might encounter flooding while trying to return the car to the Thrifty lot, I left four hours before my scheduled flight in an attempt to avoid any problems. At the intersection of Monroe and Airport Boulevard, only a few hundred feet from the Thrifty lot at 8620 Panair Road, the car stalled out.
When I called Thrifty requesting assistance, they refused to send anyone to help me. Instead, I was told to remain with the vehicle! Finally, concerned that I might miss my flight and with no other options remaining, I waded with my luggage to the Thrifty lot and office. After observing several employees standing around watching the rain, I was puzzled why they did not send someone to help me. The next insult from Thrifty occurred twelve days later when I received a damage claim in the amount of $6,454.40! I was stunned! How could an automobile that merely stalled out incur that much damage?
In correspondence sent by Thrifty to my insurance company, but not sent to me, the claim amount mysteriously rose to $6,550.40 and the following verbiage was included in their letter: "The Total Claim Amount includes the Estimated Repair Cost. We will receive invoices for the parts, parts delivery and repair charges. If the total is less than the payments received from you for the estimated costs of repairs, we will refund the difference to you. If our supplemental costs are greater, you will be billed accordingly." My insurance company subsequently paid $5,100.37 for settlement of Thrifty's claim. As I waited for documentation of the actual repair costs from an accredited repair facility before sending Thrifty any money, I began receiving threatening letters from Thrifty demanding a balance due of $1,450.03!
I called Thrifty and spoke to the Damage Recovery Agent assigned to my claim and requested documentation of the repairs and the name of the facility performing the repairs. I felt that the insurance payment would have been more than adequate to repair the vehicle, a two-year old Chrysler Sebring with 41,000 miles on the odometer. He continually attempted to evade my requests for substantiation but finally, when pressed, admitted that the vehicle was never repaired but sold at auction instead!
Then, if the vehicle was never repaired, I asked, "What is the basis for the damage estimates?" At my insistence, he agreed to provide me with a copy of the damage appraisal which had not been previously provided to me. Upon receipt of same, I discovered that the damage claim was completed in the astounding time of 66 minutes. It provided for a worst case scenario of damages to the vehicle and included the cost estimate of replacing the entire engine and associated labor costs. Even though the appraiser had identified these expenses as judgment items, Thrifty steadfastly represented those numbers, $6,392.15 as being the absolute correct damage amount.
I was told by my insurance agent that if they had known the car was sold at auction and never repaired, they would not have paid the claim which was based upon estimated repair costs. I have since spoken with and corresponded with several other representatives of Thrifty in an attempt to resolve this issue and my questions and concerns have been repeatedly ignored. The high-handedness and arrogance displayed by their personnel would cause Barney **, Nancy ** and Hank ** to turn green with envy. It is my opinion that Thrifty has committed insurance fraud, is currently attempting to commit fraud against my person by turning my claim over to a collection agency, and is possibly guilty of collusion with intent to defraud with an independently owned and operated appraisal service in Houston.

When we rented a car for a week, they tried to sell us gas in advance at $3.65 per gallon for a full tank. Gas on the island was $3.83 but we weren't sure if we would use a whole tank or be able to plan well enough to bring it back empty. They said there would be no credit for unused gas. When we declined, the agent seemed really bent out of shape and tried to insist on us buying gas from them. We still declined and told them we'd bring it back full. She said that we'd have to get the gas from a station within 10 miles of their office and show the receipt when we returned the car.
We filled up one mile from the office and returned the car full, with the receipt. The guy cleaning the car checked us in, acknowledged the receipt and told us we were good to go. On our next credit card bill, Thrifty had billed us $77.18 for gas ($5.88 per gallon). We disputed the claim. They lied to the credit card company, telling them that we returned the tank only one eighth full. Now we have to put the matter into dispute a second time and try to prove that they're lying by showing other receipts from gas we purchased on Maui.

I booked a car through Yahoo Travel at Larnaca, Cyprus Airport, Thrifty Rental. I paid in full through credit card. At airport, I was told that Thrifty Car Rental had closed. I called Travelocity long distance rates, asked to speak to a manager, and was given the runaround for over 15 minutes! The manager never came on the line after placed on hold. I called again and after a long time of telling me to wait a message, they said the call could not be completed. I am angry and out of pocket, both long distance rates plus credit card information to who knows where, plus more than $150! I can get no help from Customer Service on a refund!

We rented a thrifty minivan in Munich Airport on 9/21- 9/27/2010. The car was bad. It broke down in the second day and they took it to a garage. They only gave us a replacement after 24 hours, and they made us go ourselves to the garage after 48 hours to pick up the car after it got fixed. They did not reimburse us for the time we did not have a car, nor for our trouble. Last week (3 weeks after returning the car), they charged us 30 claiming the "car was dirty". ** lie. Never again!

I picked up my rental car at Orlando International. One hour later, I was called back to Connecticut for a medical emergency with my mother. My travel mate and her daughter kept the car, first mistake. The next day, the car was towed from Pizza Hut on International Drive after a taxi driver saw her and her daughter walk out from the Pizza Hut and crossed the street and he called PEN Towing (kickback).
She could not get the car out of impound because she was not me. The Thrifty roadside security person she talked to said she (I) would not be charged anything more as the car was no longer in my possession. She kept a key and returned it on September 6th when we were to return, the car was in impound until September 8th! My towing and impound bill plus two extra days of rental (yes, that's right, they charged me for rental while it was impounded) came to $515.00! No matter who I talked to, they did not care nor would they refund any money. This vehicle should have been brought back to Thrifty on Friday night, but instead they waited till Wednesday and I had to pay for it. Never will I rent from them again.

In a new low for car rental agencies, Thrifty charged me $15 for bringing the car back early! This is great since they can now rent it again, in effect renting it twice for the same time period.

I accidentally left my phone charger in the car when I dropped the rental car off on 08/02/2010. I have tried to contact them four times a day since Sunday. Every time I call, I get the voice mail to the lost-and-found because no one ever answers the phone. I have done this on several occasions and no return call. Customer service keeps sending emails and still I get no response. I had to replace my phone charger because no one from the company returned my phone call.

This was the single most worst experience I have ever had. I'm going to contact the company directly. With the economic climate we are all in, one would think that you would want to provide customer service to save customers and not throw them away. To everyone out there, don't use Thrifty. There are a couple of employees that need to have an attitude adjustment or learn a better way to screw over the customer. Come on Thrifty echelon, teach the power of lying!

When we went in to rent the car we were quoted by Aida at $463.13 for 7 days, we then decided to rent it only for one day, but then later decided to do the full 7 days. When we went back to return the car the person at the desk said we owed $508.70. We let him know that Aida had quoted $463.00 so he discussed this with her and she agreed. On our receipt it said we were charged MXN 6252.38. They took our dollar at MXN 13.50/$ (if you divide the 2 this comes to $463.13) but on my bank acct I was charged $508.70. This is not right. We were told one price and then given another. I called them back and they still stated, that's all they charged but who benefited in the end they did. I talked to my bank and they said they charged only what they were told to charge.

I rented a car from PHX on June 26th. The tires pressure was: Front 53 and 21 PSI. The back was 50 and 32. The car I rented is a Ford Fusion that according to the booklet is supposed to be 31 PSI. I drove it in the mountains for a while before I realized that the car was acting funny on curves. Thrifty does not care to inspect the cars! After i explained this to the "Manager", he appeared bored. Another thing, check for scratches and dents before you leave. (I almost drove away only to realize that this car was full of it!). Be aware!

Don't rent from Thrifty, the customer service is terrible. My wife rented a car in Riga, Latvia in April. First, the car was given to her dirty and dusty, and they surprised her with a $1,000 refundable damage deposit. The rental was OK, but the deposit was supposed to be returned within two weeks. After a few months of emails, questions, a few returned phone calls, and different answers every time we actually spoke to the customer service in the US and Latvia, we finally got some of the money back. The kicker is that they are charging us to clean the car, which was delivered dirty and dusty. If you have a choice, rent from another company and save yourself the trouble! We are going to complain to the BBB, and hope to get the rest of our money back.

I am writing to complain about terrible services received at Thrifty Car Rental. When I returned my car, I was expecting a cash refund of the $250 I put down. At that time, I was told that they did not have that cash amount in the draw so they would have to cut me a check from corporate offices which would take 7 to 14 days. That was May 21st. By May 25th, I received a recorded phone message from Jason ** explaining that from his records, the check was cut that day and I should receive it in two weeks. By June 10th, the check was still not received!
I called Jason back where he explained to me that he has no control over the postal services and that it is out of his hands. I then called the customer service where each and every individual I spoke to was extremely rude to me. Derrick is the only name I recorded and he was rude as well. Well, on June 15th, I finally spoke to a Caren ** who assured me the check would be cut and received on Tuesday, June 21st. Surprisingly, a month later and still no check. This is the only car rental place I have ever had problems with and I would strongly advise consumers to stay away from Thrifty Car Rental. Please post this complaint. Thank you.

Horrible experience First, I can't find a counter because Thrifty for some reason is the only car rental company that does not have a rental counter at the rental car terminal in terminal 3. And one has to actually be a search dog and ask to find out that you have to find it at terminal 2. But by then you had dragged your luggage through 3 huge terminals and are exhausted right here. Then, they told me when I want to pick up my car with the confirmation I had from them in hand that they are sorry but can't give me the car for the total promised on the confirmation but need to add their own insurance on it, since they don't accept American Express insurance anymore.
Apparently, that change was somewhere in the small print on page 34 of the contract. Who reads the small print every time you rent a car in case they made changes? Wouldn't you think changes are made a little more obvious somehow? Anyway, they were not willing to help me other than 'giving me the freedom' to try to get another car right there at the airport. Of course, I went for this but didn't have a good position being already there compared to what offer I could have gotten a month ago online when I made the reservation with Thrifty.
Anyway, I ended up renting for more with Europcar which was incredibly helpful right next door of counter. I emailed Thrifty when I returned back trying to explain and see if they could at least reimburse me the difference to the total they confirmed me. But they were very rude by email as well. They were just saying, "If we are not obligated and have done nothing wrong, we won't talk to you."
So, that's my experience with Thrifty and I just want to warn everyone out there. I work as an Executive Assistant and rent a lot of cars for my company. I have never had such bad experience with customer service and I hope they feel some return for it soon. It's all about customer service. The economic damage was about $80 more. But if it wasn't for Europcar with another rental company, it could have been $230 more for only 10 days rental!

The customer service representative who assisted us was extremely rude to both my wife and me. We had no idea that my wife's credit card would be charged $500 in advance for a bill that was around $200. We asked him to refund the $500, because we changed our minds about the rental but he refused. We then asked to speak with his manager, but he said no one was available to speak with us and the charge would remain on the card whether we rented the car or not.
We were forced to rent the car because we could not afford to rent from another company if he didn't remove the first charge of $500. We paid for a full-size Dodge Avenger but got a Honda with 8 dents and had an oil light on stating "oil 15%." The Thrifty representative came out from behind the counter to get in my face, as if he wanted to fight. I was visibly upset, so someone called security to resolve the issue.
I am 75 years old, and this young man was in his mid-twenties. This was an awful experience for me and elevated my blood pressure. I will never consider using Thrifty Car Rental again.

I reserved a full size car (Ford Taurus) to be picked up 5/15/2010 at SLC. At 2:30 pm, they "didn't have any" full size vehicles. They offered us to upgrade to a SUV for $90 per day or their luxury car for $99 per day. We told her, "No, we just want the full size we reserved in January!" She said we could wait 15 or 20 minutes and she would come & get us. She hadn't come after 25 minutes so my husband went back over and she then offered him a Ford Fusion for the same price (There was no discount for a smaller car!) or, we could get a Dodge Caravan minivan for the same price. We told her before we did not need a van for just the two of us!
I was so tired of Thrifty's ** that I told my husband we would start at the end and work our way up at all car rental agencies until we found a full size car. Next to Thrifty was Advantage Car Rental & they were so helpful and although they didn't have a full size available, they took my rental copy with Thrifty & honored it with a Jeep Commander with leather seats and sunroof! Plus, the rental package included liability insurance & roadside service. We got this for $10 less than our full size car would have been with Thrifty!
We were told that Thrifty has this happen all the time! Also, they are so tight they do not have local area maps to give their customers! They bum them from Enterprise or Advantage (beside them)! They even take bunches of Advantage's maps after they close! Thrifty has been sold to Hertz & I guess they don't want to order anything else!
We rented from Thrifty once before in Detroit, MI at DTW & once again, they did not have the size car we reserved! When we drove out of the parking lot, we noticed quite a few of the requested cars sitting there waiting to be picked up! We had gotten such a good rate with Hotwire that I think they didn't want to honor their deal! I would definitely avoid the Thrifty at the Salt Lake City airport because they are a bunch of crooks!
Also, we were told the Thrifty at SLC doesn't tell you when you pick up a rental car from them, but they tack on a daily fee of $4.99 for 'rental fee'! How about those crooks? This is our first rental with Advantage and it won't be our last.

After arriving at sw fla. airport, my wife went to arrange and sign for the rental car from thrifty. I was bringing up the luggage a few minutes behind her. She had given the agent her credit card and was processing our rental. Then she told the agent I would be doing all the driving, so he said he would need my credit card and dr. license also. So this was done. Needless to say, I was being charged an extra $9.99 per day to have my wife as a driver also. This was not told to us by the agent. We got our bill & it was $40 higher than the quoted contract online. When we signed the contract at thrifty, the additional driver fee wasn't told to us. I did do all the driving while we had the car for 5 days. When we returned the car, they said we signed the contract and that was it. When we did sign the small signing box the sun was glaring on it and it had to be tilted to see where to sign our name, let alone read any of the fine print. This trip was a gift from my 3 teen age children for my wife and my wedding anniversary. None of the agents we talked to gave us any satisfaction about our problem. I'll never ret from them again!

This was the most horrible experience I've ever had in renting a car. This car rental was for Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of the most busiest, traffic ridden, and dangerous cities to be driving around in without direction.
Upon arriving at the arrivals gate, no one was there to meet us. I managed to find the other rental companies and came up with enough Portuguese to ask someone at the other counters to help me find the Thrifty counter. It was not in the airport as I had thought. They radioed a Thrifty rep, who came to meet me. She didn't speak much English, so we had some confusion. When we arrived at the Thrifty counter outside the airport, I asked for a GPS. They said they didn't have one. I then asked for a map of Sao Paulo state. They gave me a map, but it was a map of the airport!
I told them I needed a map of the state so I could find my way to the city I was actually driving to. They said they didn't have one. I told them it was very dangerous for me to try to drive in Sao Paulo city with no map and no GPS to guide me in case I got lost. They didn't care. I finally told them to go to Google Maps and print me driving directions from the Thrifty location to my destination. They printed it for me, but didn't print the overall map. Then, they wanted to put a $2500 hold on my debit card without telling me. In all the rudeness possible, they told me my card didn't work. My friend used her Mastercard and it went through, so the lady at the counter would no longer talk to me, the primary renter and only driver on the vehicle!
Using the directions they printed out, paired with the crazy traffic of Sao Paulo, I found myself lost 3 times trying to get onto the highway. This, I cannot say enough, was extremely dangerous, as Sao Paulo has a high rate of crime and, a wrong turn can put you in the infamous Favelas run by drug gangs where, as two younger women traveling alone, we could be robbed, beaten, raped, and/or kidnapped easily. This was incredibly stressful. After several attempts at back tracking in the dark with a car that performs like a run down Yugo, I managed to get 5 miles out of Sao Paulo in the wrong direction. Thank God, I was able to find a very nice Pharmacist at a drug store, who spoke no English, to help us. He called a local taxi to lead us to the highway we needed to get on. It cost me $75 to get to the highway.
Needless to say, my entire stay in Sao Paulo state was very complicated, as I had no map and no GPS. Thank God, I had friends and the hotel staff in Piracicaba to help me. I inevitably spent a lot of money trying to get around where I needed to go. Because of this horrible mess, I ended up spending an additional $150 to hire a driver to meet me outside of Sao Paulo city and lead me to return the car. I returned it to the location at Congonhas Domestic Airport Thrifty counter because I didn't want to talk to the people at the Guarulhos International Airport Thrifty counter every again. I also found out that in the Congonhas airport counter, they do have GPS and they do have state maps! I'm not sure how that makes a lick of sense that the international airport counter wouldn't have GPS or state maps. I also learned that the directions these people gave me originally, sent me to the wrong side of Sao Paulo City, which cost me an additional $15 in tollway charges.
Finally, this car they gave me was a piece of **. If you took the car to 100 km/h, the engine would whine like a plane getting ready for take off. Note that the speed limit on the highways are 120 km/h. If you went up a hill, it would max at 80 km/h unless you dropped it to 4th gear to get some extra power. Sao Paolo is mountainous, so the highways are always up and down through the mountains.
I am extremely dissatisfied with this company and will never, ever rent from them again in Sao Paulo, ever! They put me in a very dangerous situation without giving a thought about safety. This entire mess cost me way more than what I should have ever paid, US$240, simply to ensure I didn't get robbed, kidnapped, beaten, raped, or killed. $240 + $184.80 + $30 (gas) = $454.80 is what it cost me for this horrible, horrible service. It is unbelievable. This message will also go to Thrifty corporate and will be posted on travel boards on the internet.

Well, my family and I booked our vacation months in advance to Orlando,Florida in April 2010. When we got to Orlando Airport to pick up our rental through Thrifty, and after standing in line for over an hour with 3 small children, we were denied our rental because our credit was too low on our debit card. I was never told that they do a credit check on a debit card.
If I was told that, I would have went to another rental company. I even spoke to Thrifty the day before to confirm everything and they told me that everything was fine. So, people, before booking with any rental company, make sure you are told that they do a credit check with a debit and a major credit card so you don't have to go through what I did. They ruined my vacation with all the problems they caused me and my family.

When I returned the rental van, I did not have a receipt for the gas but I did fill it up and the gauge clearly showed full. My wife had the receipt when I dropped her off with the luggage. They charged me $4.66 because I did not have the receipt with me. When I complained to my American Express card company, I got the same story, "You signed a contract and there's nothing we can do". I will never rent from Thrifty again. I had no help from customer service.

I rented a car from Mercedita Airport located at Ponce, Puerto Rico on April 17, 2010 to April 25, 2010. The charges were $292.12 which they charged on my debit card immediately after the car was returned. Today, April 30th, 2010, Thrifty Car Rental is still holding $150 from my checking account even though the charges for the rental already cleared. My financial institution explained to them that they needed to send a letter to the bank giving consent for the bank to release the funds that are being held. The car rental company refuses to fax TD Bank the letter until they fax information regarding the charges already made into my account. According to the car rental company, they cannot verify the payment already cleared in my account. This doesn't make any sense and they have caused me frustration and difficulties financially.

I need to inform of a recent rental at the Memphis airport where I was disrespected by the most arrogant and pompous group of people I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with in my life. When I checked in the rental vehicle, I was told that one of the bugs on the windshield was instead a small nick in the glass. I explained it had bugs on it when I rented it and I still thought it was one of the many bugs on the windshield. Then his attitude changed and the guy was now accusing me of intentionally putting a nick in a windshield and covering it with bugs. He demanded that I fill out paperwork and I explained that any info he would need would be in my Blue Chip profile.
I was told I had to fill out an accident report or I could be "arrested right now" and he said, "Did you file a police report?" I replied that I never noticed it and I asked the man not to move the car so I could take pictures of what he was referring to on the windshield and I would go inside to fill out this paperwork. When I went inside ,I asked for the rental manager and tried to better understand why this was all necessary over a nick in the windshield. I was only allowed to talk to the lead rental agent who told me I had no say in the matter I had to fill out the form.
So I reluctantly filled out the report, then when I asked the man at the counter for a color copy of the front of the report, I had my words repeated to me over and over like I was three-year old child, he repeated it over and over, "You want a copy? You want a copy? You want a copy? (I later found out that this man was the manager that I had asked for about 10 minues before, Mark S.) All we can do is make you a photo copy." I replied, "Ok, that's all I want is a color copy," and once again the same phrase was repeated back to me over and over. :So you want a copy? So you want a copy?" While he went to make a copy, I removed my camera from my computer bag to take pictures of the rental car windshield. I walked back outside. It was gone. They had moved the car. I was told that it was moved to the back and I asked why they had moved it before I took my pictures. I was informed that they can move their car anywhere they please. I explained to them that I wanted to take a picture of the nick on the glass "just as it was" without anyone moving the vehicle and making it worse. He said it was in the back now.
So I assumed that I would have to go to the car to take the photos I wanted. I calmly started to walk back to the vehicle to take a picture with my camera. Then at the back of the building this unshaven security guard came running at me before I cleared the corner of the building. It seemed like I had awoken him. He started screaming at me and yelling at me, "Get Out." There is no way that this confused security guard (with alcohol on his breath and shivering from either anxiousness or from withdraws) had any idea that I was a customer or what was going on here. As I tried to explain to him that I only wanted a picture of the windshield on the vehicle I had just rented, he got right up close to me and then he demanded that I "leave the property!" Before I could take a step he said, "Didn't you hear me? I said leave the property now."
Just then the rental car pulled up from the back and I quickly took some pictures and headed into the building to retrieve my bags and leave. The security guard, close behind me yelled, "Leave the property." I replied, "I believe I am entitled to a bus ride back to the airport?" He yelled, "You ain't entitled to nothin'. Get off of the property." I slowly walked into the building, got my bags and headed for the bus. The guard followed me into the building and kept saying, "You some sort of crazy man? You look like a crazy man. Don't you give me none of those crazy man looks. You want more trouble crazy man?" I knew that if I did or said anything his over bearing bullying would escalate out of control, so all I could do was smile at him and back away from him. I said nothing at all. I just smiled and grabbed my bags and calmly walked out backwards out of the building and got on the bus and hoped that this was the end of the Thrifty Memphis Rental nightmare.
The bus driver told the office on the radio that there were customers on board that needed to leave to catch their flights and the office replied to her on the radio, "You wait." It appeared that they were keeping the bus there thinking they were punishing me but I was not the one who was late, I had hours before my flight. I apologized to the four other car renters for the delay in the bus' departure and I explained that it was my fault for not leaving the property when I was told and that I thought I was entitled to a ride back to the airport after paying for my two day rental. The poor driver was getting frustrated and the people on the bus wanted to leave now. It was several minutes later that the driver just closed the door and headed to the gate so she could take the clients back to the airport so they would not miss their flights as they had been explaining to her for over 10 minutes.
As we were leaving the rental lot, she had to slam on the breaks because the exit gate that was open for our departure suddenly went back to the closed position and we could not get out. The driver called the office and asked what was going on? The voice on the radio said, "You wait," it was the guard on the radio. Then the security guard slowly walked out of the rental building, he meandered across the parking lot, passed along the side of the bus I was sitting on and he was staring and glaring at me the entire way. He approached the exit gate and looking straight at me he reluctantly opened the gate so the driver could do her job and get these other customers back to the airport.
I am a regional manager for a $7.5 billion company. I fly every week and I rent cars every week. I am Hertz #1 Gold, National Emerald Executive, Avis Preferred Elite, Enterprise Plus, Budget Express Gold and A Blue Chip member with you. My company has national contracts with National and Avis which includes insurance and other perks included in the rental. I am not sure how many days or how many times I have rented from you or Dollar in the last 11 months since my promotion to this position where travel is a weekly event but I know how much of my future business they will receive: zero!
Going forward, I will pay not to rent from someone who could push around and treat a customer like I was treated by Memphis staff. Their arrogant and condescending attitude demanding that I leave the property and not wanting to provide bus transportation back to the airport is something that I do not want anyone I know to experience. I am copying this letter in an email to the travel departments for every division we have at my company, to my distribution teams in my 14 states, to our legal department, to Wells Fargo Commercial Card claims division and to the customer service departments for AAA, AARP and BBB. There is no way to respond to the snobbish attitude of their staff and how much damage has been done.
I request of them to please do not contact me because I would prefer not to be threatened by anyone else from their company. I now realize that my rental business should stay with the major car rental companies with professional staff teams like National, Avis and Hertz who know how to treat regular clients. I will never do business with Thrifty or Dollar again!

Prior to returning our rental, we filled up with gas and I had the receipt in my pocket. At the return, I was asked if we filled up. I responded yes. When I got home, I was charged for gas at $7.99 a gallon (one gallon charge). I called Thrifty and was told, per the rental agreement I was required to show my receipt for gas, but they would refund the $7.99. I feel this is equal to stealing. I guess the adage, "Car Renter Beware", holds true at Thrifty. But for me I don't need to worry about renting from them again.

Reserved a rate on the Internet. Called and informed Thrifty that my ship would be a couple of days late due to bad weather. The agent confirmed that I would still get the same rate. When I arrived, I was told that the rate was more than the email rate I had received. For $10 it was not worth going finding another car rental company.
After returning the car, I found out that they had billed $15.70 more than my written agreement. Clearly, they make their money by pricking the customer with pins and needles for a few extra bucks that they probably won't notice or complain about! Will never rent from them again.

When offering prepaid fuel option, they do not disclose that the per gallon rate is before taxes. That is significant because it adds 30% to the per gallon rate. Unlike a daily rental rate, you do not expect that the gas rate will be taxed as well. So from $2.92/gallon, actual rate is $3.79/gallon or over $30 difference. You need to force them to disclose that.

On March 18, 2010, I had made a reservation for an automobile, online using Expedia, a website used by my husband's employer, from Thrifty Rent-a-car, Tampa, Florida (airport location). When I arrived to pick up my rental vehicle, the desk clerk, Sanley, noticed my reservation had all the insurance charges, included in my low-price reservation, and his obligated sales tactic of trying to push those insurance add-ons prompted a response from me, "that all those are included in my reservation".
He called his manager Tera, who explained to me that they were not going to honor my reservation, since I had a Texas driver's license, and they only allowed visitors with international driver's licenses to claim rental cars reserved from the Expedia.co.uk website.
There was nothing in my paperwork/small-print that prohibited me from booking my reservation, and I had already paid for this car rental, and it was not cancel-able, since cancellations must be done in advance, not during the car-rental pick-up time. The last thing I needed was to pay double for a rental car I had already reserved online. Manager Tera, who did not speak to me in person, but hid behind her closed office door, and spoke to me over the phone, did not budge. Therefore, I was stranded without a car in Florida, unless I got one of their cars under a "new" reservation, where this new reservation would cost me more than double my original estimate. After further bargaining, I was successful at lowering the price of the "new" reservation. Again, I would have gone to one of the other airport car rental agencies, but all were sold out due to spring break.
The unprofessional, discourteous, and inhospitable treatment I received from this rental office was infuriating. It was a crowded spring break weekend, and all the rental offices at the Tampa Airport were sold-out, and these Thrifty employees knew they had their customers. If you plan to travel to Tampa, stay far away from Thrifty, unless you feel like being taken advantage of, when you're under stressful crowded travel conditions. I will make it my personal duty to share this negative experience, with as many travelers as possible.

I left a pair of Swiss Army sunglasses in a hard case upon return of my rental. Upon my return to SC, I contacted Thrifty and spoke to a woman named Ebony. After a search, she located my glasses. I asked how I could retrieve them. She said she would send them to my address COD. By mid-November, I called Thrifty back and spoke to the manager, whose name I do not recall. She said she would have Mario, the man who actually recovered the glasses and who is her assistant to call me.
I made several calls back to her over the course of the rest of November 2009, December 2009 and January 2010. Finally, Mario called me and he said he would look again for the glasses. I offered to pay to have them sent to me. Well, that is the last I have heard from Thrifty, even after repeated calls to the manager on her cell phone and the desk. I have rented from Thrifty at this location previously as well as other locations. Please help me in the recovery of my glasses, I will pay for shipment. They have more sentimental value to me more than any real cash value. I hope to hear from you soon.

Renter, beware of hidden charges and bad communication skills from sales staff!

I rented a Black Ford Fusion on Aug 20-27, 2010. I returned the car with the mileage of 9674 and there was no damage to the car. In November 2010 I received a generic statement saying on or about Aug 27 there was damage to the car and I needed to pay $2419.43. I was not told what the damage was.
I contacted my insurance company AAA and advised them I didn't cause any damage. Thrifty would not comply with AAA and sent documentation showing the damage done. Verbally they stated the suspension and steering was damaged. In December, my agent was told verbally to close the case it would not be pursued. I sent by fax a copy of the letter they sent showing the case was closed. In January I received another generic statement demanding money stating they hadn't heard from me.
I have copies of the faxed letter with the confirmation attached. My agent noted there was additional mileage on the car and the repair work was not done until one week later than when I had returned the car. Thrifty emailed my agent and stated there was damage done to the gas tank and needed to be repaired. If the steering was so bad how did the extra mileage get on the car? AAA has denied the claim. What do I do now?

I went to rent a vehicle from Thrifty on February 25, 2010. The representative Jan ** was very uncooperative with me through the process. Offers and charges were not explained correctly. The representative Jan ** was very arrogant and treated me with no respect and class went he told me he was doing me a favor because I did not have a reservation, but if they had a car available and I had a credit card, then I was doing them a favor by renting the car that nobody reserved. I complaint to the supervisor Ramon ** for the way I was treated and he seem to care less. I will never rent a vehicle from Thrifty or recommend this place to any of my family or friends. They are very unprofessional. I enjoy my vacations in Puerto Rico very much and this was the only sour moment I had.

Thrifty Rental Car now puts a hold on all major credit cards for $350 even if you only rent their car for one day. In addition, they try to force you to buy their rental insurance, saying your personal car insurance is not acceptable. My rental charge would have been less than $70 but when you add the extra hold of $280 with the rental insurance, my card would have been charged over $400 for a two-day rental of an economy car. Sure, I would have gotten the $270 back eventually, but I thought the purpose of using a major credit card was to avoid those fees and extra charges. I walked 15 steps to Alamo and was charged a total over $68 to my card. Goodbye, Thrifty....forever.

Attached is the letter to Thrifty car rental from me. They charged my credit card $125.00 for cleaning fee.
I have been a repeat customer with Thrifty for many years and never once have I returned a vehicle in conditions that needed excessive cleaning. I am furious and disagree with your findings, I personally vacuum the floors and seats before returning all of my rental vehicles. The vehicle in questioned was given to me needing this service and the seats were not in perfect conditions. I didn't complained because it wasn't excessive. I took the vehicle to the nearest station and vacuumed it myself. Upon returning my rental to the inspector, I made sure he inspected the inside and out before leaving as I always do, so nothing like this would ever happen. I am requesting to see proof of the damages in questions before I proceed any further.
I know times are hard for everyone, but I would have never expected for Thrifty to stoop to such levels and be a part of a rip-off scheme. I will never rent another vehicle from your establishment again or recommend your service to anyone I know. Your company has proven to be deceiving and your employees behavior is unacceptable, how dare you deny my request without showing me proof, am I just suppose to accept your explanation when I know you are wrong. Do these guys get some sort of incentives when your company makes money off of erroneous reports. As I am writing this response I decided to "Google" Thrifty for consumer complaints, and wow, to my surprise I found out that I am not the first customer you have ripped off. I am requesting your response back along with photos showing the damages.
I will be reporting your establishment to the BBB for further investigation and anywhere else I need to, to reveal your fraudulent activities. Give me my money back and stop ripping off your customers!--Angry ex-customer.

I rented a car from Thrifty for four days. I knew I might be an hour late bringing the car back and asked on the front end what my charges would be. They told me $13 per hour. I agreed to that. When I brought it back, I was 1 hr and 4 minutes late. Four minutes I spent waiting in line to return it. They charged me $26 for that. And they did agree to credit me the $13 for the four minutes. But I had an upgrade and an additional driver and they charged me another full day because I was an hour late.
I was never told I would be charged for this or I would have made sure I got that car back in time. It actually cost me another $50 to be an hour late. They told me since I went over the 24 hrs, I was charged these rates automatically and nothing they could do. This is a rip off. I asked them where in the contract does it state that additional charges will apply for being over the 24 hrs? They said it doesn't, that it is assumed. Well, they need to explain on the front end better and put it in writing! I will never rent from Thrifty again and will advise all renters to watch for these 'gotcha' fees. You think you are getting a good deal on a car until they attach all these fees to it.

I rented a car through Expedia.com. When I arrived at Thrifty, the person at the counter asked me about a Loss Damage Waiver ($22.99 a day). I explained to him that I did not need the LDW because my insurance company would cover any damage to the car. He printed out the receipt and asked me to initial by the LDW saying that I was declining it. After I initialed the form, I handed it back to him and without my knowledge, he circled accept on the charge and I didn't realize it until I had left and got to my hotel room. When I returned the car, I was told that I had to call the company and file a complaint, which I did. I have a case #xxxxxxx. I have tried to call them multiple times for a resolution to this problem and was transferred from person to person and then told to call back in three weeks. They have made no effort to resolve this.
I feel that I was ripped off $160.93 plus tax and that Thrifty intentionally set out to rip me off. I still have the receipt and it took three of us to figure out that I had been charged because the receipt is so hard to understand. The LDW is on one side of the receipt with absolutely no total on it anywhere and the rest of the charges are on the other side and the total charge includes the LDW but is not itemized on that side of the receipt.
This is a very slimy way to do business and I want my money back. I believe the person at the counter purposely tried to scam me. Maybe they get a commission for every LDW they sell. I don't know. But what I do know is that this was no mistake. It was intentional! Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

This was my first time renting a vehicle and my last time doing business with Thrifty. We live in a Denver suburb and needed a vehicle from Jan 1st through the 3rd. The only Thrifty location in the Denver metro area is at the airport. So, I drove myself to the airport to pick up our vehicle. This was my first mistake. While checking in with your employee (Nell), I was informed that I could not park my vehicle in Thrifty's gigantic parking lot for more than 24 hours. This is because certain travelers park in the lot (illegally) then take the shuttle to the airport and go on their trip, basically parking for free. I understand that, however, I was not heading to the airport, I was renting a car.
My rationale seemed illogical to both Nell and her other co-workers who, by the way, could clearly hear our conversation (and my frustration) yet were more interested in watching the Macy's Parade on TV. I could never get a logical/professional answer to my question. "Why can't I park here for two and a half days while I rent your car?" Apparently, I'm the first person in the history of renting a car from Thrifty in Denver who did not arrive to that location by plane/shuttle/limo/taxi/friend. Their only response was for me to take a shuttle bus to the airport long term parking lot, pay to park, take another shuttle to the airport terminal, then take another shuttle back to Thrifty and pick up my car. All this while looking at around 500 parking spaces which were available. This was beyond ridiculous. When I asked to speak with a supervisor or manager, I was told there were none available. Shocker.
Oh, before I could continue with my rental agreement, Nell informed me that it was mandatory to purchase additional auto coverage. I told her that my own auto insurance/AAA/credit card provide adequate coverage. Yet she again demanded that I select an option. When I did, she totaled up my charges and asked me to sign. When I inquired about several additional charges that were included, she could not explain them. She said, ready for this. "I can explain them after your card is charged." Hilarious.
Now, on your website, I read this about additional insurance: Before deciding whether to purchase LDW, the renter may wish to determine whether their own automobile insurance or credit card agreement provides coverage for rental vehicle damage or loss and determine the amount of the deductible under your own insurance coverage. The purchase of LDW is not mandatory. LDW is not insurance.
Time was getting tight so I decided to get to the shuttle. While exiting the facility, I asked the parking lot attendant how to get to the nearest long term lot. We started chatting about my situation and he recommended I park in the Thrifty employee lot. The same lot I suggested 20 minutes earlier. I pulled into the lot, went inside the adjacent maintenance building, and introduced myself to the manager of that facility. He said it would be no problem to park there until Sunday. When I arrived back on Sunday, my vehicle was right where I left it. I doubt anyone will read this, much less respond with anything but a canned letter/email. Lets see what happens.

On December 28, 2009 we returned our rental to the Thrifty Rental place in Eatontown, NJ. Dave the owner was extremely ill-mannered, detestable and condescending. There was a misunderstanding regarding the unlimited mileage. All the other stipulations were made very clear before the exchange except for the "restrictions" on the so-called "unlimited" mileage.
Even after I was asked where I was going which was CLEARLY beyond the limit, nothing was said. I went from paying $182 to paying a ridiculous $942. I WAS ROBBED WITH MY EYES WIDE OPEN! I hope the lack of common courtesy in mentioning there would be extreme additional charges was worth the laugh they received at my expense.
To add insult to injury the police were called because he locked the car so we couldn't take our stuff out (baby seat, suitcases, bottles, etc.)and was going to move the car while my daughter was behind it (I heard him tell the police he did put the car in reverse). This was just evidence of his horrific professional practices. I WILL NEVER USE THIS COMPANY AGAIN!

Absolutely the worst rental car experience of my life and I travel a lot. Rude, condescending attitude from counter staff (Jason) and in a big hurry to make you sign for unexpected "mandatory" insurance made my 2 day rental booked through Travelocity a whopping $89.84 2-day rental when all was said and done. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone, and I will not subject myself to deceptive tactics they pull at the last minute when customers are least able to contest price gouging or verify authenticity of "mandatory" insurance which incidentally was never disclosed in any way when booking through Travelocity. My experience was not unique. Every customer checking in at that location was faced with this argumentative attitude, despite well-traveled customers providing specifics as to credit card agreements with coverage agreements. In my opinion, this company engages in intimidation and deceptive practices which, in my opinion, are grounds for a legitimate class-action lawsuit. Please provide comments as to your experience with this vendor, practices, and tactics.

I was charged for insurance on the rental car after I said I did not want it. Customer service said to bad they will not credit me back. I do not understand companies doing this. Not only did they loose my buisness but no one in my company will ever use them again.

I rented a vehicle from Ontario Thrifty on July 3rd for the holiday weekend. On Tuesday went to return the vehicle and the car was running very poorly so I pulled off the freeway and called thrifty roadside help which they told me they would send a tow truck which was fine. Minutes later I got a call back from thrifty stating it would be a 45 minute wait which I told the rep I could not wait 45 minutes as I was already late to my appointment at work. Once the tow truck driver got to the location he called me which I told him where he could find the keys.
Weeks later after coming home from vacation I see a demand letter for the vehicle which I couldn't understand so I check my bank account and I see charges over $1000.00 so I call them to find out what is going on. I couldn't believe not one person seems to anything! I asked to speak with a supervisor and was told they would call me back which never happened! Spoke with another rep which told me "the 2nd car was never returned" which I asked her what 2nd car was she talking about I never rented a 2nd car from you guys! I asked her if she could email me or fax me the info which she stated she could not do. I told her in no way had I ever rented a 2nd vehicle!
After doing my own research come to find out the thrifty tow truck driver dropped off a 2nd vehicle when he picked up the 1st one which has to be dumbest thing I ever heard!! Who in their right mind would drop off a car to someone that was not even there and not even notify them! Since when whould a company drop off a vehicle on a street and not even notify anyone.
I went and got a printout at the Ontario location and it is very clear your company just dropped off a car in the middle of nowhere and expect me to pay for it! The car was parked in the same location where they just dropped it off at got tickets everyday until the county had it towed away and you expect me to pay for it? I compared on my rental slip a different VEH#0614740, License plate #hrx854 and color WHITE is the car I rented and signed for however on the printout the lady gave me it states VEH#0690255, License 5zmf160 and color SILVER
I would love for company to produce ONE document stating I ever agreed or signed for this vehicle at question! I expect a full refund plus all the fees I have accrued and a apology letter this has taking up much time and stress in my life and threw all my bills off all due to [their] company error! I have yet to received one phone call back from Tran ext 770 or any other supervisor nor did Steve S. at Thrifty Car Rental Airport Drive Suite 500 Ontario, CA 91764 reply to my better business complaint this is in noway acceptable! If I have yet to hear my your company by the end of the week I will contact every news stations I can to let them know how your company conducts business hopefully you can get this message to the right person.
Much stress, time, in total over $3000.00. $2300 some odd dollars from Thrifty $855 in eviction fees from my rent check bouncing and bank fees all due to this company!

I had already filed a complaint and just wanted to let you know that it has been taken care of by Thrifty.

I rented a car from Thrifty Rent A Car on Oct 24 and returned it on Oct 25. I drove on a toll road operated by Municipal Services Bureau this is a road that there are no toll operators and they take a picture of your tag and send you a bill for the toll. I had never seen a toll road like this prior to this day. When I returned the car I told the Thrifty Representative that I had been on the toll road and they told me that I had to call the toll operators and pay the toll before they were sent a bill. If I didn't I would be charged $45.00. I asked for the phone number and they couldn't provide it to me. The next day I came home and searched the internet and found Texas Toll Road myself. After calling them they told me I needed to call Municipal Services Bureau as they operated this road. I called and asked to pay my toll charge. I was told that the bill wasn't ready yet. I called Thrifty to tell them I couldn't pay it yet and Melvin told me I had to wait ten days and then call MSB back and would be able to pay online. I waited 10 days and called back.
I was told they could see the $4.80 charge but that it was in the middle of a billing cycle so I couldn't pay. I would have to try back on the 9th or 10th of November. They gave me a website to pay on line and a refernce number. My husband called Thrifty adn spoke to Danny Owens who said that he had never heard of a customer not being able to pay within 10 days and that not to worry they would verify that we had paid when they got the bill from the MSB and would not charge us the $45.00 administrative fee. I waited until November 9th and went online it said the bill would be ready in the next 15 days. I checked again on the 10th and it still said this so I called MSB directly. I spoke to Elizabeth who said that she saw the charge but that I couldn't pay it online or over the phone because they had billed Thrifty and that Thrifty sent the bill back return mail so therefore my name was not on the bill so I couldn't pay it. I asked her how the process works and she told me that they send a bill to the rental car companies who then identify the drivers and provide MSB with the identy information on those drivers and then MSB bills them directly.
I called Thrifty and spoke to Sandra and told her that I couldn't pay the bill because they had sent the bill back return mail. She told me that I had to pay MSB directly and that I needed to call them to pay and that she had never heard of anyone having problems. I told her I had called MSB but that they couldn't take my money because Thrifty had sent the bill back. Sandra told me that MSB was 2 months behind in thier billing and that I had 2 months to pay. I told her that MSB wasn't 2 months behind because they had already billed Thrifty but recieved the bill back return mail. Sandra was very unhelpful and told me there was nothing she could do. I emailed MSB and expressed my frustruation and my fear that Thrifty would bill me 45.00 for not paying the toll. They sent me back an email apologizing for the inconviencnce and told me they were waiving the $4.80 charge for the trouble. Today I recieved a bill from my credit card company showing Thrifty billed me $52.06 for administrative fees for not paying the toll. I am so frusturated with Thrifty and thier lack of customer service.

We rented a car via Expedia... the estimated cost did not include a "Trip Saver" charge of $24.95 that was not mentioned at the time of pick up either. Apparently this is road side assistance, which I already have with my credit card and car insurance. Also, they charged me a $2 "Frequent Flyer Recovery" fee to add my frequent flyer number (also not mentioned)

I saw what I thought was a great deal online for a Dodge Charger through Thrifty Rent a Car at the Honolulu Airport. I put it on my debit card and made a reservation for 1 week Nov. 9 to 17th 2009. I got there and not only did they NOT have that specific car but they would not accept my debit.
They sent me to Dollar rental which is their sister company. They took my cash instead of debit and added $100.00 deposit fee in cash, then gave me a [bad] car Dodge Avenger covered in scratches and the window fogged up and wipers were so bad there was barely any visual out the window during a rainy night. Every time the ignition was turned on a warning of needing an oil change came up.
Obviously they don't maintain their cars either. The gas cap had no lock on it so I was open to gas theft. I'll never rent a car with these companies again. They put out con advertisements to suck you in and they are all false. Pay the extra money and go with Hertz or Budget. You get what you pay for. I came close to having an accident from not being able to see out the windshield plus it didn't help my blood pressure any. Not having the $350.00 cash I intended for holiday put a crimp in my vacation.

We rented a car for three days from Thrifty in San Francisco. We opted to refill it ourselves, three blocks from the rental agency. We left the car in the garage that Thrifty was located in, overnight. When we checked the car in we were informed that it was not full. Having been very careful to refill, this was surprising. We argued and I showed them receipts proving we had filled up. Finally we agreed that I'd watch them put gas in, and sure enough it took exactly five gallons. Clearly someone (in the same garage as Thrifty, mind you) actually stole five gallons of gas from the car, which did NOT have a locking tank or interior release. Despite clear evidence that we'd been diligent in refuelling, they insisted on charging their $8/gallon price. After much arguing with management, they finally relented and charged us "only" double the market rate. OK, they didn't legally have to do even that, but it sure felt like they had no compunctions about gouging the victim.

CarRentals.com never mentioned the mandatory insurance fee Costa Rica charges, even when you have your own insurance. All it said was 'Total with Taxes & Fees". Thrifty chose to charge $20+ for this insurance bringing our reservation from $12.99/day to almost $35/day. Not very Thrifty. You can pay as little as $7.99 for this. Thrifty had no options for us & by the time you get to Thrifty from the airport, you're stuck and have no real options. Find a different rental company & do your research to avoid the bait & switch. They were horrible to deal with and I saw 3 other people while I was there upset as well... 2 left. They were unwilling to do anything to help satisfy the customer... nothing. I will never rent from Thrifty again.

I booked a reservation on the Thrifty website on August 11, 2009 for a car in Florence, Italy on September 24, 2009. When I arrived to pick up the car, I was told that no cars were available. The 'solution' was that the agent, Alex Zino, walked up and down the streets to other rental car dealers to see who might have a car available. When he got to the 4th or 5th one, National, they had a car available and he was happy to hand me off to them (of course it's way past 9:00am now, which is when I wanted to pick up the car).
But the rate they have available is nearly twice as much as the one I booked. I had a rate of 48.20 euros, and their rate was 80 euros. When I told Alex I shouldn't have to pay the difference he disagreed and said I should be happy because 'my problem was solved. I had a car so I should be happy.'
I have a signed note from Mr. Zino saying that no cars were available from Thrifty on that date. I had no choice in this situation but to rent the car from National and pay the higher price because I needed a car that day, for just the 1 day. I ended up paying $120.15 for the rental from National when I should have paid much less with Thrifty. Thrifty is completely unreliable!

On Aug 31, 2009,I was charged more than $300 for, according to them, damage to the car I rented from Aug 19-25. When I returned the car, I wasn't told about any damage. They didn't call me, didn't send any letter. When I called them to clarify the matter, it seems like they're just fooling around with me. Until now there's no letter from them

I told the agent I was looking for an economical car for a two day rental. I also stated I DID NOT WANT THE ADDITIONAL INSURANCE COVERAGE OFFERED BY THRIFTY... KNOWING MY OWN COVERAGE WAS ENOUGH. She came back offering a much larger SUV (not what I was looking for) and an offer (a "special" for that day) of the additional insurance being "INCLUDED" WITH THE DAILY RENTAL CHARGE.
I AGAIN SAID ..I DO NOT NEED THE ADDITIONAL INSURANCE. She said it was a special deal along with trip saver( a form of AAA coverage @ $5.99 per day).... I was not going to argue.
Turns out I did actually pay for the "LDW1" coverage @ 24.99 per day, and the tripsaver coverage @ 5.99 per day... over and above the rental cost. Looking back I realize the agent watched me closely as I initialed the circled charges which was an acceptance of these charges .. Unbeknownst to me!
I was lied to and treated with deceptive practices. The codes they use for these insurance charges are not explained and even if you state EXACTLY what you want they deceive you.
I tried several customer service complaints.. they all stated because I signed the form and initialed the charges the bill was valid and they would not remove the charges of $49.98 and 11.98 ...
BE AWARE!!!!

We feel that if Thrifty allows other companies and web sites to use their name and logo, they should accept the reservations and not attempt to blackmail customers who are at a disadvantage. Never again will we rent from Thrifty and will inform everyone we know to do the same. Our total bill for the car rental was over $1000 American dollars including insurance for 2 weeks use. We had already paid $155 to the other co.

In the MasterCard benefits statement it clearly states the insurance is effective in all countries except Ireland, Israel, or Jamaica. I emailed Thrifty quoting the statement from MasterCard and asked if this was acceptable by Thrifty. Rick M of Thrifty responded that Thrifty accepted the Master Gold/Platinum in lieu of LDW. I then requested that Mr. M send me a statement that I could take with me to Germany confirming that Thrifty accepted the insurance provided by the Gold/Platinum MasterCard. I did not receive a response to that request or another request a few days later.
We took the MasterCard benefits booklet with us in case we had problems. Upon arrival at the Thrifty counter, we were told the MasterCard was not acceptable in lieu of the LDW without a specific letter from MasterCard stating that we (by name) were covered by their insurance in Germany and we would have to buy their LDW or put up a very large deposit. We immediately cancelled the Thrifty reservation and went to Hertz who had no hesitation in accepting the MasterCard in lieu of the LDW.
It appears Thrifty is playing a con game. Since Thrifty refused to provide a written statement confirming they accept the MasterCard insurance, they are obviously aware of the Thrifty Germany policy. The day may come when they make this a company wide policy, dont get caught. After making a reservation and arriving at your destination, they feel they have you cornered and can force you to buy their LDW. Dont accept this blackmail. There are other auto rental companies that will accept the MasterCard in lieu of the LDW.

We had reserved a car with Thrifty on-line to pick up in San Francisco with Drop off in Los Angeles, we got an excellent rate with a drop off charge which we didnt mind. This was a trip of a lifetime for me and my friend (two senior citizen ladies). When we went to pick up the car, they asked us for a credit card. Because the 3 credit cards we had had a maximum credit line of 300.00 each and they required $350.00 they would not rent us a car. We asked if we could give a cash deposit, if they could split the deposit in 2 cards, and they said it was not possible. We tried to get additional money into our credit cards, but it was not possible, due processing time would not post immediately, we spent half a day dealing with credit cards, bank, etc. I think they did not want to work with us, because they did not want to honor the rate we had and they had plenty of business (Labor day weekend). We had rented a car two weeks before in Florida and had no problem. What is going on with these car rentalscompanies today? When the economy is so bad, instead of helping the economy they are obstructing people from using these common services? and helping the economy?

Before we booked I repeatedly asked the company who booked this car hire, Net Flights, to ensure that EVERYTHING was included in the cost. We did not want to arrive after a long flight to find we needed to pay additional amounts. This was assured to me. Hmmm
On arrival we proceeded to Thrifty on the outskirts of the airport. We were greeted by a less than customer service oriented person and when we presented our voucher we were shown a small notice that said what was included in our hire. This was not the same as our voucher. When I pointed out our voucher included, for instance 24 hour recovery, we were told repeatedly that "the card shows what you have", you do not have that cover. All vouchers from the UK are always wrong ! Why are they always wrong.... Anyway, we were getting nowhere so we said we would follow this up on our return to the UK - BIG MISTAKE !
We were told to go out and choose our car. We had booked a specific 4x4 and had been told there would be plenty of these, even though it said "or similar", as it was a large major airport. Well, there was one and it smelt like an ashtray. So we were forced to choose something which we considered far inferior, and which indeed turned out to be far inferior, the major problem being a boot with no smoked windows or cover which meant we had to lug in and out of hotels every two days four large cases. In addition on return to the UK we found an extra charge of 10.14 on our credit card described as tourism surcharge.
So, on our return I phoned NetFlights. They gave me an email address and we sent off our complaint. After various emails, sending them my credit card statement etc. and about six weeks we eventually found on our credit card a refund of the 10.14. No letter, no email and no further information about the other aspects of our complaint.
Despite my emailing every week I cannot get a response. Nobody will reply. They are totally disinterested To not even send a response about the refund was bad enough, but I feel my emails are now being blocked.
I wish I had never heard of Thrifty Car Hire. They ruined our trip, which was around Arizona in isolated country, with the thought that we had no recovery at all.

To start, my husband and I rented a Dodge Charger for a funeral. When I arrived, there was an English couple talking about making a reservation - notice I said talking - no reservation was made. While I'm standing there, they chose a car, and he goes into giving them an Atlanta history lesson. I thought this was rude and unprofessional, especially when I informed him from jump that I had a reservation. He didn't give me any type of concern to my time or money. After 15 minutes, he takes them to their car, and I look outside and he's giving them a Charger. Naturally, I assume my car is still waiting. Lo and behold, he tells me he has no more Chargers.
His attitude was lax, unprofessional, and he had the audacity to offer a smaller car at the same rate. I stated that since he inconvenienced me, WITH A RESERVATION, I wouldn't do it, and that HE could do better. I got a Jeep Compass for $50 less, but as soon as we got the next state line, the Change oil light comes on. I call Cust. Care to inform them, and they tell me it's not time for the oil to be changed. WTH? On top of this the Jeep is a gas guzzler, and we paid more for gas than we did the rental!!
When we got back, I stated, "BTW, the change oil light came on." He says, "yeah, I guess it did." WHAT? He then states that the mileage was wrong on the car, so thank God we didn't just stop on the interstate. I will NEVER use Thrifty again. I would've done better using my own car. Total lack of professionalism, cust. svc, overall concern, and just a waste of a paycheck. Someone can get hurt. Please read these, because they are truly informative.

I rented a car in Tampa Florida in June 09 as I was visiting the area and my car was in the shop. I brought my E Pass with me for tolls, and either it didn't go off or the there was something wrong with the unit. Anyway, on September 3rd I got a letter dated August 29th from Thrifty stating that they had toll charges on the car that they paid in my "Behalf" Totaling $2.00 but they slapped me with a $25.00 per occurrence charge!! $75 for $2.00 in missed tolls! I refuse to pay this and will have the credit card charges denied.

Calls to the national Thrifty office resulted in them saying that Indy was the only francise and they had no control over it. Why allow someone to use the Thrify name if you no control over unscrupulous business practices? We travel frequently, and in the past have always used Budget. We will never again use Thrifty, nor will our business partners, friends, or family. For a little over $100, that manager lost a lifetime of business.

While on a business trip, traveling late at night. Three months after the trip, I recieve a letter from Thrifty that while on this trip, I missed a $.50 toll and charged me a $25 admin fee. Outragious!Just wanted to pass this on. I will never be using them again! A $.50 incidental fee turned into a $25.50 nighmare. There are too many options out there to make this mistake again!!

I arrived at IAW airport car rental for Thrifty and found that I was deceptively reserved a car that Thrifty off site, not made known on their website. The clerk said she could not give me an airport car, had no cars, just the first two of her lies. Enentually by phone I convinced Thrifty to give me a car there at the airport and they then jacked the price of my reservation about $50 blaming airport taxes. I signed for this because the manager there said she would late correct my bill down by a days rental. This was another lie as she never did this! Took two hours to get a car and then had to over pay beyond my reservation.

I came to Texas from California at the first time. I rented a car from thrifty car rental on May 15, 2007. I denied one of the agreement, which I need to pay $28 (no refund)for toll way fee, because I thought I stayed in TX only one day that I did not need to spend $28. However, they cheated on and deceived me because they did not tell me that they have a payment tag on the car and they did not take off and cover the tag while I denied.
While I tried to buy a ticket at the station, the clerk said that I did not need to buy it but he didn't tell me why. So I thought I was lucky. Later, they fined me $68 because they said that I had a violation.
The trick is whatever I bought the ticket or not they were going to fine me because the fee was applied to the payment tag automatically. So they should not fine me because they didn't take off the tag and didn't tell me there was a tag on the car and what would happen later.

My husband and I rented a car from Thrifty at the end of July and left a handicapped placard. We called lost and found immediately when we got to the airport and it was closed for the weekend. On Monday, my husband was disconnected three times and gave up on the phone call and decided to e-mail them. They never responded. A follow-up inquiry from Thrifty asking us about our car rental experience was also ignored by Thrifty. Bad Customer Service.

Thrifty refused to honor my credit card coverage or my USAA coverage. In addition they BILLED my credit card 1200 Euro, no placed a hold. I paid $30 in interest because it crossed billing cycles. A bill that was supposed to be less than $500 ended up being 2500 on my card. 1800 is supposed to be returned but has not yet.

I may have owed this bill but when I returned the car, that was not what I was told so I decided to dispute it. The car rental was in Hawaii and was resolved by faxing the gentleman below. He had his assistant call me. She gave me the company line, but when she heard that I did not receive an updated receipt showing the extra charges I was disputing, she quickly agreed to credit my account. Good luck!

We rented an intermediate size vehicle from Thrifty at the Milwaukee airport location for one week in June of 2009. We were supposed to get a Chrysler Sebring type vehicle. Instead, we got a very used, old Jeep Patriot with bald tires and a lot of problems and 35,000 miles on it. We immediately complained and were told it was the only vehicle available and that the entire town was "sold out" of rental cars. The guy had the gall to say the car had absolutely no damage on it. I went over it with him in the dark garage and it had damage on every single side. We were very upset about the condition of the tires and the mileage. We would never drive a vehicle in that condition at home.
To make matters even worse, they would not allow my husband to have his name on the rental. He had been blacklisted by Dollar at the same airport 4 years earlier. They apparently are the same company. On that rental, we had a blowout of a bald tire 1 mile after leaving the airport. We changed it and immediately returned the car for a new one. Over 3 months later, we got a bill for the tire damage of $175. Our credit card would not pay it as too much time had gone by. They called and called and finally my husband paid the bill in full but apparently he is on some blacklist to not rent to now.
We drove the Jeep for a week. It was scary with the rough highways in Wisconsin and the bald tires. One night, we were in a rainstorm and of course, the wiper blades were rotted. The entire front end was out of alignment and the back right tire area made a whining noise. I was so happy to get back to the Milwaukee airport alive and without having a blowout. We looked at two other cars in their lineup when arriving and we saw bald tires on the new vehicles too. I would never rent from this company again. Their vehicles are unsafe.

I booked a car through car rentals and was given the total price of $77.95 from Thrifty at the end of the online reservation process. When I arrived at the office of Thrifty Car Rental near Chicago O'Hare airport on the afternoon of June 11, 2009, I presented the reservation details to the person manning the counter (I believe his name was Rihani.). He then offered me a Ford Fusion.
This was fine, but the total chargeable came up to $191.09. I was shocked by this, as the new price represented a near 250% increase on what I was expecting to pay! I asked him why the amount was so much, and he said this amount included the insurance fees (loss damage waiver, uninsured motorist protection and supplemental liability). I understood that these fees were optional, so I informed him that I did not want to take out the extra insurance premium and that I just wanted to pay the originally quoted amount of $77.95.
He then said that under those circumstances, he was unable to offer me a Ford Fusion or any other car but that I could take a minivan if I wanted to. Now, I understand that with a wild card booking, I might get a larger car; but I was not expecting a minivan. The website quotes a "mid-size or larger car." I do not consider a minivan as being a car, and I was not comfortable with the idea of driving something so large.
More conspicuously, if his first offer was a Ford Fusion, why couldn't he have honored that without forcing me to purchase the optional insurance? I fail to understand why one would be allowed to rent a minivan without purchasing insurance but that the reverse is true when wanting to rent a car. It seems to be a policy of double standards.
I have called customer service to complain, but they were of no help. They said the best way to resolve the situation was to return the car and cancel the rental. But they also said there was no guarantee that any cancellation would be honored. From the car rental rate of USD 77.95, I had to pay USD 191.09 due to the optional insurance that was tacked on emotional grief, arguing with sales person who is out to try to make a quick buck and branch supervisor who was rude and equally unhelpful and out to cheat unsuspecting customers.
I was attending a seminar in St Charles at the time, and I didn't have the time to risk a two-hour return journey to see if they would cancel my rental.I feel cheated, as I was put in a position where I had no choice but to take out the insurance premium, even though it was clearly optional. However, he refused to rent me the car without adding on the optional items. I shall never be renting from Thrifty again.

I rented a car, and got a flat tire down the road. I took the car back and they charged me $165 to replace a tire that had over 36000 miles on them. I asked to talk with a supervisor, and they, but he (Jeff) was rude and told me I had to pay. I cancelled my Blue Chip membership, and will never rent from them again.

I rented a car from Thrifty on via Borgo Ognissanti 134/R, Florence, Italy in June, 2008 to drive to a nearby town and return the car later in the week to the same pickup location. One of my primary concerns was the rental location being near the main section of Florence. I was afraid I may inadvertently drive into the limited traffic zone and face a ticket. I specifically asked the rental agent how to return the car without passing through the zone and followed the directions exactly. Five months later I received a fine for 94 Euro. Thrifty then added a 50 Euro administrative fee.
After some research I discovered that this particular Thrifty location is located within the Limited Traffic Zone, so it was impossible to return the car without incurring a fine. I also understand that if a phone call was made upon return of the vehicle to the traffic authority, stating that a rental car was being returned only, the violation would have been waived.
I contacted Thrifty and asked for reimbursement of both the fine and their administration fee. They refused, and I was surprised that they would not even reverse the administration fee. They said I had agreed to this at the time of rental. I did do that, but they are missing the point. My fine resulted from misinformation from their employee and they are not accepting any responsibility.
I do realize that it was I that drove into the limited traffic zone, missing the warning signs, but had I been given the correct information I would have had Thrifty make the phone call. Now I have paid 144 euros (over $200) in fines. So this is a warning to be aware of the Limited Traffic Zone in Florence and not to rent from Thrifty. They cost me an additional $200 and I want it back.

I rented a car at Cincinnati Airport in July 2008. I scaped the cars fender and reported the damage to Thrifty and my Insurance company as required. I received a claim letter and bill from Thrifty for over $3000, even though the estimates were half that. They were very nasty in their approach as if I was "dodging" them. Meanwhile while my Insurance Company is working the claim for $700, DTG is billing me for $3000.00 for a simple scrape on the fender. I still owe a 500 deductible, no problem, I'll pay that if necessary, but they add on administrative fees and "loss of income" like that car was the only rental car in Cincinnati. They will not provide me proof of loss of income, or how they come up with the figures. Bottom line is they billed me repeatedly for $3000.00 over $700.00 worth of damages (according to their own documentation)

My confirmation stated the rate was 150 pounds per week. Upon arrival, I was told that I had to pay for insurance. I refused. They said I couldn't have the car unless the insurance was paid. The total cost was over $400.00.
Many emails since, I find myself here shocked that I was not screwed so by after reading the horror stories from others.

After waiting about 25 minutes for the bus to pick up 6 of us at the ST. Louis airport. I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental on Tuesday, I paid half in cash and half on my debit card (which I do EVERY MONTH). On Wednesday afternoon I received a phone call from the manager Scott at Thrifty. He said the money I gave him was COUNTERFEIT. I told him I had received that money from the bank before my travel as I always do. I told Scott I would call him back after I called my bank. After a call to my bank (who was beyond helpful...thank you Wells Fargo) I called the St. Louis Sheriffs Department, and Thrifty's corporate office. The Sheriff's Department said Thrifty didn't have a leg to stand on, but to be aware I maybe getting a call from the SECRET SERVICE.
Their corporate office said I couldn't file a claim because I was still in possession of the vehicle. SO I called Scott back he stated he was the manager and he was indeed the one to talk to about this problem. I informed Scott I had called my bank and they had said there was no way I received COUNTERFEIT money from them. He said he knew they would say that and ask what I was going to do about the situation. After I asked him several questions about how cash contracts are handled by his employees, I asked why the COUNTERFEIT money wasn't detected 26 HOURS ago, when I was still at the counter.(Seriously who would pay COUNTERFEIT cash to a place that has all your information and you have to return to!) Anyhow, Scott said as this situation was BOTH of our faults he would eat the 100 dollars and I would no longer be able to rent from them. That's when I ended my conversation with Scott.
Upon my return of the vehicle my receipt stated I was being returned ALMOST the entire car rental price. Well that was a pleasant surprise UNTIL I GOT HOME. I had given Thrifty permission to charge my account a total of $150 the rest was cash. After my flight home I took MY CAR to the gas station were my card was declined (AFTER I HAD PUMPED MY GAS). I called my bank and found Thrifty had charged an additional $99.89 to my car with NO EXPLANATION ON THE CONTRACT.
Now because I spent $80 I apparently didn't have in the bank that THRIFTY STOLE. I am -$167 in my bank account due to overdraft fees. I have called my bank once again to file a claim against thrifty for unauthorized charges, I have called Thrifty corporate office and opened a claim with them as well. I'll keep you posted. Wish me luck.
DON'T ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE BULLIED BY THESE CAR RENTAL COMPANIES. What happened to customer service anyhow? And WHY DO THEY INSIST ON GIVING ME AN UPGRADE EVERY TIME I RENT? THRIFTY Car Rental should have cost with gas a total of $234 it has actually cost me $234 (for rental)+$98.89 (for additional non accounted for fees)+$75 (overdraft fees from my bank) and I still owe my local gas station $23.

As another person noted regarding damage to the vehicle when the car was snow covered when I rented it and it was at night. If you rent from them at Detroit Metro Airport, you will notice all cars are out in the open. Michigan weather in December is horrible and there system of checking in your car and returning is a great class action lawsuit for any attorney to win. There system was stated flawed even by Progressive Insurance. I would be willing to testify on behalf of all who were hurt monetarily by Thrifty car rental. I wish I was an attorney. $1,300 bill on damage I did not do.

I picked up our rental car (Dodge Journey) on 4/9/09. We drove it for approximately 1 day. On 4/10/09, at around 3:30 p.m., one of the tires blew out as we were driving up to the mountains. After closer inspection, we realized that both rear tires were in horrible, horrible condition. They had both worn through the steel belts and all the way to the core. This rental car had only 22,000 miles on it! Because we were in the mountains and didn't have anywhere to wait, we had to drive back to our residence (approx. 20 more miles) on the donut tire as well as the other bad tire.
Thrifty did replace the car, but because there was a wait for the other car, we weren't able to do anything till about 8 p.m. that night. I was offered a pitiful $25 refund by the local office on our $224 bill. When we returned the replacement car, the manager told us that they had problems with locals renting cars and taking off the good tires and replacing them with bad tires. So the company knows about these bad tires, yet does nothing about it! I do have pictures of these tires and would be happy to share them.
Not only was my life at risk, but the lives of my passengers and anyone out on the road with us. They knew they had a problem with bad tires, yet willingly let this car go out.

I asked the clerk to put on the contract that I would prepay gas. I repeated to him that I wanted prepaid fuel. He acknowledged what I said. I expected that it was on the contract. When I returned the car I found out that it was not on the contract and I was charged $83.88 for fuel.
I rented a Chrysler Sebring which holds 13 gallons. The prepay charge is $2.07 per gallon. The contract states that when I returned the car it had 2/8 of a tank of fuel left. That means to fill it it needed 9.75 gallons. $83.88 divided by 9.75 gallons means I am paying $8.60 per gallon. The contract price is around $7.00 per gallon if you rent the car without pre-paid fuel. This means that I was frauded and overpaid by $63.70. This is not a lot of money (fortunately) but by gauging by all the other complaints practices of deceit and fraud are common for this company.

My complaint about Thrifty is about how they resolve damage claims and determine the amount due. Thrifty tried to double charge me on expenses. They charged my credit card, $ 327.60 on August 13, 2008 and never notified me while pursuing a claim thru their subrogation department for $ 450.00. I discovered the August 13th charge in December after I had VISA all lined up to pay out to Thrifty and settle the claim.
Like other people on this blog, Thrifty had threatened to sue me in October of 2008 if I did not pay them right away--only had the claim for a little over a month after they submitted their claim about 45 days after servicing the rental car. This time the request was $ 450.00 while at the same time knowing that they had already charged my credit card for $ 327.60. I requested for a reversal of the credit card charge so that VISA would pay them the correct amount since they had not factored in the first payment on my credit card. The individual, McCarty referred me to Corporate customer service as she was not going to assist. Corporate customer service after I contacted them referred me to subrogation where McCarty worked and said they would not assist.
Thrifty has split the claim into this strange arrangement where Corporate customer service handled part of the claim and subrogation part of the claim. Now, subrogation has presented documentation that shows an adjustment on the initial rental agreement where they presented documentation in September that did not have the adjustment, so either Thrifty tried to double collect on the account ignoring the initial documentation and presented me with an alternate copy in September 2008 or they purposely concealed an amount of approximately $ 70.00 which is the difference between the 189.90 they are saying that they are going to collect on where the balance based on their initial subrogation documentation in October should be $ 450.00 - 327.60 = $ 122.40. I have told them over three emails starting in December to date that they have their numbers wrong, but they don't cooperate and get the math right.
The consequences are that I can't settle the claim and pay them because their numbers aren't right and they continue to threaten suit and unless they admit their documentation is incorrect, they are going to hurt my credit rating. Their splitting of the claim is baseless and in bad faith where subrogation could get on the phone and talk to whoever charged the credit card and document it without threatening suit or collection activity.

on april 4th at 3pm, I walk into thrifty car rental, and ask to lease a large car. well the saleperson stated she did have one but it were not clean yet, i agree that i would take it as long as there were no smell of smoke inside the car. while doing the paper work, she read off a charge of 9.95 ldw-some type of ins. i didn't want it but she explain as long as i were using a debit card i had to take it. but to my surprise this were for everyday i had the rental i found this out the next day. now here where it got carzy. the rental car front end were damage to a point of noise and the oil light came on as soon as i left the rental company.
i woke up on the moring of the six and look over my paper work and find all of the hidden fees and took the car back because it were not in good conditon. ask if i could get a car that would make a trip out of town. and i needed a discount for all the hell i went thur. matthew pertended to give good me a discount and i stop and read the paper work and find out this were a joke and a lie, what i ask matthew, to let me lease it for the week, i only rental it for 3 days and thought it would be wise to extended because i were going out of town and it cost 174 for 3 days and the week were 209.00 plus 156 dollars for all the other fees he pertend to take off for my troubles with the damage car they knew about,
at frist he told me he had no more cars to give me or switch me in. i were angry with these people. plus they charge me airport fee 12.95 . had no clue how to remove it, finally he remove it. but explain that they charge me airport fees before, did not credit me for that. i never rented or call from the airport ever. what type of business are these poeple running and allow to add charges to you that they never told you about. I learn from an honest employee that this happen all the time, and customers come back to return the cars and really are so upset. so when a company that aloud their employee's to be put in front of angry people and get yell threaten. while he rakes in the stolen hiiden fee's from the people who try to trust them.
i will check into some legal advice, i will like to see this company put out of business. matthew is so not into his work. I will never lease from this place again and will do my best to send email to all my friend and others about this rip off
unresolve, problem were not taking care off. over charge because of all the hidden fees that were not motion.
