Carnival Cruise Lines - Crime

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

My items were stolen by the a Carnival Staff member. I sailed the MS Carnival Liberty Guest ID # 8711 Cabin #8220 on 7/30/2011-8/6/2011. After several calls and letters, Carnival has refused to reimbursement me for my designer eyeglasses and curling iron. I wanted to go back on the ship, which hadn't started to board yet and was still debarking to retrieve my items but was told that I had to file a report and my items would be returned. I filed the report but no one from Carnival took the report seriously or followed up. I also injured my foot and was treated very poorly in the infirmary.

I have several detailed letters that can be provided and a medical report that supports my claim. After months of writing everyone I could think of associated with Carnival, I received a final email from Martha **, Supervisor, Guest Care stating "Your most recent letter to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has been brought to our attention. Although we respect your continuing interest in this matter, our position remains unchanged and no compensation will be extended. I know this is not the answer you had hoped for, however, I must inform you that we are unable to give this matter any further consideration and it is now deemed closed. We leave you with our best wishes."

Hence they have refused to change their position and have not even offered me any type of reimbursement for items in excess of $1,500. How is Carnival allowed to get away with not reimbursing passengers for stolen items on their ship? I've already appealed this decision so I really don't have any other recourse but to take it to civil court which I'm planning to do once I figure out how the process works. Hopefully, I'll get some type of reimbursement or credit. I just don't understand how items are stolen from someone's cabin behind locked doors and no one is responsible. Someone really needs to look into Carnival's deceptive practices. Cruises are not cheap nor am I rich. I want reimbursement or a credit for my items.

After enjoying a wonderful cruise on Carnival Cruise Line, dated October 16th through the 23rd The Pride, I was horrified to find a piece of my luggage missing. when I went to retrieve it from customs. I cannot believe that there is no accountability with the Carnival cruise ship and customs on retrieving a personal belonging in the care of others (the agency and the cruise lines). There is no identifier on the bags other than a strip label having your name and address that can easily be torn from the bag, leaving it exposed to theft. I have lost my bag containing belongings I can never replace as well as precious articles from a deceased relative (Grandmother valuable necklace and earrings to name a few-mistakenly place in bag).

The bag contained my entire gift purchased in ports and on the ship for my family and friends, priceless photos I bought on board. I was told to give the customs 24 hours and call them to see if my bag was returned, only to find out that the paper work I filled out had not gotten send to the necessary people handling lost and found items in Miami Florida. I was then told to call on Friday October 28, 2011, which I did. They explained to me and my husband that I need to contact the travel agency that booked my trip and see if I had insurance on the luggage that was lost due to others negligence or and policy not in place to retrieve personal items. Anyone can easily take a bag not belonging to them. They are free to anyone's disposal. This can be done purely by error. However, if the individual is not an honest person, or just does not want the hassle of returning the item. Then to bad for the poor soul this happens to. I have taken several Carnival Cruises in the pass and would like to continue to do so. But at this time, I am very unhappy with this process and do believe many changes should occur.

The most glaring one being you must identify the item you are taking by some find of ticket tag like is followed in the airline business. Please let me know what options I have in either helping me to find my bag or compensating me for my loss. I have had several sleepless nights not knowing whether I will see my bag and its contents again. This is very disturbing to say the least. Your attention to this matter is highly appreciated.

I am writing to inform you of a very serious matter that happened to our family when we were on your Carnival Cruise "Triumph" on July 30 August 6, 2011. We are a family of four, consisting of my husband, myself, and our two children; 1 boy, 7 years old and 1 girl, 17 years old. This being our children's first cruise, we wanted to make sure they had the time of their lives, because we don't know when we'll be able to take this kind of vacation again. During our stay, every morning of our cruise, my husband would charge his iPhone on our charger in our room. He would play his golf game on it in the morning. And then before we headed out for the day, he would plug it in. He didn't use it at all because of not having the reception on the ship. Please note we all had our iPhones on this trip, his being the only one that didn't require a password to use it.

On this particular day, we left the room around 8:00 pm to have dinner. When we came back around 11:00 pm, after the show, we noticed that the turn down service was made and my husband's iPhone was gone. My son's iPod sat right next to where it would have been plugged in, but the iPhone was gone. My husband was very sure of himself of where he left it before dinner, seeing that this was the daily thing he did. We are sure that it was taken or stolen. We recall at the beginning of our stay when we first entered our room, the room attendant "Yudi" said to us: "I am responsible for anything you might need on your trip etc." So, we asked him about the missing phone. He said that he noticed that the phone was there that particular day but saw that it was gone that night. He said that he and his assistant are the only ones that entered our room when we were not there.

My husband contacted guest services right away the following morning. He told them that his phone was missing from our room. Guest services said that they would have security meet him at our room in a few moments. He and my son went to the room and security came. Security looked through everything. We felt completely violated after they literally ransacked our room. The sheets were torn off the bed, and the suitcases were a mess! It was as if we were the persons that had committed the crime! During their inspection of our room, they moved the base of the unit that encloses the life jackets. They found a pipe and some marijuana wrapped in a wash towel! It was clear to security immediately that the drugs had been there for some time (security told my husband this) but still had to do a report on it. My husband had no words as he was appalled that this was happening to our family! Do you know what my seven-year-old son said?! He said to his daddy at the time of finding the drugs: "Daddy....are you taking drugs?!"

When I walked into the room with my daughter to find out if they had found the phone, I was told "No, but we did find drugs." I thought that they were kidding! I thought we were on one of those TV shows with the hidden camera! The fact that this room had not been completely, thoroughly cleaned before we checked into our room is another factor in this situation. I cannot say enough to let you know how this ruined our entire vacation! My husband's $700 iPhone 4 was stolen out of our room, and then we were accused of having illegal drugs in our room! My husband is a police officer and an active member of our S.W.A.T. Team here in Illinois. This was not only appalling. It was embarrassing, unbelievable, and completely unacceptable! His entire career could have been jeopardized!

So all in all, after doing a report on the missing phone and doing a report on the drugs found in the room, nothing was resolved. We received a letter from guest services. It basically said sorry and talk to Carnival's corporate office. So for the rest of our time on the cruise, we all just kind of had a sour taste in our mouths. We felt completely violated. We couldn't believe that our phone was stolen. We basically just had to go on with our vacation and have a good time.

During our stay, we talked to several of your guests, which became our friends. We told them the story of our stolen phone (and the drugs too). They couldn't believe it! They said that they leave their phones out everyday on the counter the same way we had, and never even thought that there was a chance of them being taken. They said, "I guess we were the lucky ones." It was all so embarrassing and horrible. Since we've been back, we've told our family and friends. And again we got the same responses.

On the early morning of departing, we were visited once again by local Louisiana Police Officers to ask us a few questions about the report of the drugs being found in the room. They were speaking to my husband like this was an every day occurrence and they apologized to him for all of his troubles. They asked if Carnival was doing anything for us for all the troubles we've been through. We blatantly said no. They said they were sorry again and left. Carnival didn't do anything for us, after the "searching" of our room, after the accusations of having drugs. I will never use Carnival again. And I assure you that this situation will be shared with many online sites that have information on "where to go and who to use and who not to use as a vacation cruise", unless this situation is taken care of by Carnival. I still feel that I just have not said enough about how this entire event ruined our probably once in a lifetime vacation with our family. We were all violated when we were the ones that were made out to be the victims. This is one vacation that will never be forgotten for sure.

A Carnival crew member researched my telephone number from an email that I had sent my girlfriend. I did not know she was still involved with him, but obviously she is. He telephoned me and threated me and my family with extreme violence and prejudice. This makes me very nervous to go on any of their cruise ships. He stated he was once involved with the Italian mafia and that if I didn't leave her and let him have her, he would come and destroy me and my family the next time he was off the ship. This person is a danger to anyone who doesn't give him what he wants and I will never go aboard another one of their ships do to this fact. I refuse to put me or my family in jeopardy, because of someone else's obsession.

My family & I took a cruise aboard Carnival's "Destiny" from 06-30-02 to 07-07-02. My son had brand new expensive electronic equipment with him. On the last night of the cruise, you are asked to leave your luggage outside of your cabin door, for the cabin stewards to pick up and sort out by the colored tags, which they give to you. Then they supposably deposit the luggage to the luggage depot for the departing guests to pick up the next morning.
We were a party of six. The next morning, five of us found our luggage in the colored section they were supposed to be in, but my son's, that had the expensive electronics, luggage was missing. Four of us searched through every piece of luggage there, in every color section. His luggage was not to be found. He completed a lost luggage form.
A few days after our return home, Carnival contacted him to say they had found his luggage, and would ship it to him in 8 to 10 business days, (it took us 5 hours to fly home). It took 10 business days to receive his luggage. There was also a $30 C.O.D. charge with it. The lock that he originally had on his luggage was gone, and all of his electronic equipment was missing.

We had also purchased a trip cancellation insurance, which I read after we were home, and realized it would cover up to $1500 of lost luggage, although he was missing over $2000 of merchandise. I requested a claim form, when it was mailed to me, it was THEN stated that the claim would have to be turned it to Homeowners Insurance first.

My wife and I just completed a 4-night cruise on the Fantasy (Freeport and Nassau). On the last day of sailing we were out to sea and we spent the entire day on deck. Our money was put in the safe on Tuesday around 8:00 p.m. when we returned from Paradise Island. There was $1500.00 in a plastic bag that was counted and put in the safe and locked. We never checked the safe again until 5:00 Wednesday, April 10th.
When we came back to the cabin we found that our money had been taken out of the safe. We notified the front desk and 3 security people came and interviewed us and completely checked our room but did not find our money. They said that they would do an investigation and get back with us after they had conducted their investigation. We left the ship on Thursday morning and no one contacted us concerning this matter.
Someone on board the ship entered our room and got into our safe. The key was in the room -- in a purse hanging up in closet next to a camera bag and a back pack. I know that it is possible for someone to enter the rooms because we noticed that night after the incident that the doors of the rooms are opened during cleaning and not always did I see a Fantasy worker in the room. Some areas had 5 or 6 rooms opened at the same time. I dont know who took our money but feel that you are responsible for our things when they are in your care and in your safe!
We were going to continue on to Daytona Beach for another 5 nights at the "Sand Castle Hotel", but had to call them on the drive home because we did not have any money. I took $200 out of your ATM just to get us home! Besides not being able to continue our vacation we lost the $77.70 deposit on our room there!
We have always been very, very happy with Carnival Cruises, in fact I am now an internet travel agent and push Carnival Cruises. I have numerous people booked for future cruises who know that I just went on this cruise. I am sure they dont want to hear what I have to tell them. This is the 4th cruise we have taken and two other cruises we have taken, we booked over forty people that went with us.
When we called your security department they made us feel like we were the criminals. No consideration was given to us. We had just lost $1500.00 cash. We were devastated. Our 35th wedding anniversary just turned into a nightmare. We were celebrating this anniversary on your ship. No one gave us any consideration to get back with us concerning your investigation.

It's very unsafe and, yes, unwise to travel with large sums of money. This is why traveler's checks were invented.
