Sept. 11 Emergency

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines

Faith of Arlington VA (9/25/01):
My husband Joon and I were planning to go to a cruise this October 5-8 on Royal Caribbean. We were supposed to fly from Washington National to Miami, FL. Due to the recent events, my husband, a National Guardsman, is on alert by his unit.

We called the cruise line and the insurance company, National Leisure Group, and asked if we can cancel our reservations. We did not know that this insurance does not cover liability in cases of "war". I think that is unfair for consumers. They would not want to give our money back because we want to serve our country.

This is utterly ridiculous. I do not know how to solve this dilemma. I would like to ask assistance regarding this matter. Who and where do I go for complaints? The money would also help us in a time like this. We would rather give it to charity than go to a cruise line or an insurance company that does not value patriotism. Thank you very much for your kind consideration. GOD Bless America.

First of all, war has not been declared and the insurance company is most likely obligated to pay. Second, Washington Reagan National remains closed and it's very unlikely it will reopen by Oct. 5, which would probably result in involuntary cancellation since the flight would not be operating. Third, if Joon's Guard unit is on alert the cruise line should cancel the reservation and return all deposits without delay.

If it does not do so, Joon should check with his unit's Judge Advocate General Corps, which can provide limited legal assistance to servicemen and women.
