Leighann of Austinville VA (8/11/03):
My son is 24 months old and he has learned to climb out of his car seat. He undoes the clip on the chest straps. It's the one you just slide on to not the one you buckle. He does this going down the road. Before you get to stop he's out and in the floor. He had cut his arm from falling in the floorboard or the car.

Jean of Macomb MI writes (7/13/02):
In June of 2000, we were given an Evenflo Ultra I Town & Country Secure Advantage car seat. Our daughter was 21 months old when she figured out how to slide the safety harness down that holds the two seat belts together on the baby's chest. She proceeded to slip her arms out of the belt one by one and stood up in the Carseats as I was driving down the freeway alone!!

I noticed this in my rearview mirror and quickly got into the right lane to stop and figure out what to do. I got her back into her seat and yelled a little that she had to stay in her seat, and anybody with a 2 year old know that "yeah, uh huh, whatever" look. We made it almost the way home when she did it again. Again, I had to pull over.

On June 16th, 2002 I called Evenflo at their 800 number and spoke to Rob. He informed me that all baby car seats are designed that way, it's to rescue the baby quickly if needed in an accident. He asked if my daughter had been injured, I said no. He said there wasn't anything they could do. I then asked for a replacement harness part, he was very helpful and promptly asked for my name and address. A few days later it arrived and I replaced it that same day.

Needless to say, that doesn't work either. She slides it down just the same way. The only way to keep her in is to tie a shoelace just under the harness so she can't slide it down. My point is: is that they were really only concerned whether she was injured or not. I figure that I'd rather have my daughter safe BEFORE something happens, than have her be a statistic! Something should be done about these car seats!

Kelli of Fredericksburg VA (7/20/00):
I am deeply concerned about the Child Car seat I purchased. It is the "Ultra I" manufactured by Evenflo. My 11 month old daughter can unhook the seat belt clip that keeps the seat belt secured at the chest. She has done this for the past three months and does it everytime she is in the Carseats. I contacted Evenflo and they informed me that they are aware of the problem. They informed me that they are in the process of resolving the problem but at the present time, there was nothing they could do.

The operator then proceeded to advise me to place a long bib on my child so that if she couldn't see it, she wouldn't unhook it. That is not the problem. Many children, including my daughter, do not like to be restrained and will do anything to get free. I am highly upset that nothing is being done about this dangerous problem. My child could be seriously injured or even killed if my vehicle was in an accident and the clip was not secure on my child. I feel something must be done about this.
