Promenade

John of E. Syracuse NY writes (7/2/01):
This was in my statement when I received it:

06/29/01 -96.00 0.00 0.00 Debit Card W/D Comment: 888-237-5990 PROMENADE X

I never ever let anyone take anything out of my bank with out written permission. They just took it out like they were billing me. When asked about it they said oh this company we deal with AMI or something like that, is giving us numbers and we bill the credit cards they give us. Then they try and cover it up saying that I should never give out my crdit card over the internet that anyone can get it. I told them I wanted my card credited and they say it would take 2 weeks, I told them I would be in contact with consumer fraud Dept. and that they would be responsible for any checks bounced. They had no reply.

Just that anyone can mess with your checking account like that is wrong and that anyone caught like these people should be fined and/or jailed.

Annette of Rocky Point, NY, writes (6/14/01):
On my May bill from my Direct Merchants credit card account there was a charge in the amount of $96.00 billed to me by Promenade (888-237-5990). I never did any business with this company, I never received, requested or authorized any purchase through them. Then on my June bill the same thing happened again with another company called Direct One Com.Long DI (888-355-9713) they charged to my same account $60.89 without my permission. Again, I did not receive, request or authorize any such charges.

I called both companies and wanted to know how they could possibly charge my account for something I did not okay or request and they said I would have gotten something in the mail as a free trial offer and if I did not call to cancel I would be charged on a credit card (which I did not give them any info on my credit cards) This would be junk mail that I always throw out! I asked for credit from each company and asked to speak to a manager and was told none were available.

So not only was I charged for something I did not request but I am also being charged interest through the credit card company for 2 months now. I can't believe that companies can get away with charging anyone without their knowledge consent or authorization. How can I avoid this happening to me in the future?

At the moment, there is no good answer to this question, unfortunately.

Kate of Arkadelphia, AR (5/3/01):
I received a "welcome" package in the mail from Promenade Membership Services. I thought this was a rather slick package for junk mail, so luckily I read it. It stated I would be charged $96.00 annually (for the rest of my life?) to the credit card they have on file (!) for these services unless I called and cancelled.

Excuse me, but now I have to work to make sure people like these don't bilk me? This offer was completely unsolicited. Thank God I read what appeared to be junk mail. Where did they get my credit card number, and more importantly, who else has access to it? I have already filed a complaint with the USPS Inspectors Office.

I don't know yet. I need to re-examine my past credit card statements and intensely scrutinize my future ones to make sure they don't charge my account.

Florence of San Antonio writes (6/20/00):
Received a packet in the mail with a membership card attached. I called and asked why I had received it. They said I had ordered it. No way says I. The girl says, "Okey we'll reverse the charge on your credit card. My question is, if I didn't order this packet then how can a company charge my AT&T Mastercard without my consent? Now I'm just dying to see my credit card. Since I'm 57 I wonder if they think I'm brain dead. Other people need to be aware of the charges they put on their credit cards. I actually know people who don't compare their receips to the charges on their credit card statement when it comes in, bad idea. This is not the first time I have had charges on my card. I'm beginning to believe, cash is the best way to deal with anyone.
