National Online Complaints

Nancy of Mosinee WI (3/16/03):
I accepted (I think) an offer for the National Online Internet service after pressure from a telemarketer, but emailed a cancellation within a month or so. I received an email back, to my recollection, requesting more information, so I did. A month or so later, I thought the matter was resolved, and threw away any information I had on the subject, and also deleted the email messages.

Now, about six months later, I realize that the charges of $29.95 have been appearing on the last page of my local phone bill ever since. I have no paperwork to refer to for any contact phone numbers, emails or addresses. I would like to know who to contact to stop these unauthorized charges ASAP.

Tony of Van Nuys CA (10/3/02):
This company called one of our retail store locations and had the person at the store deceptively agree to a service that he felt they were going to send him information about. And not actually start any kind of service.

We got billed for a service that either the person that authorized it had any authorization to authorize and were deceptively receiving a service we did not even know what it was about and being billed for. Never used.

Dennis of Charlotte ND (2/9/03):
Local phone bill includes "Service Provider - NATIONAL ONLINE SERV" with a $29.95 charge for "Internet Access Service Monthly Fee" -- this is TOTALLY RIDICULOUS AND FRAUDULENT! I don't recall placing ANY order for these services, don't receive any, and don't need some crappy dial-up Internet anyway.

Linda of Silver Springs MD (2/7/03):
In September of 2002 I began getting $30.85 charge on my Verizon bill from Nat'l Online Intrnt billed by ILD Teleservices. I initially thought that this charge was linked to my Verizon DSL service. Upon talking with Verizon I found that this was a third party billing and that they had nothing to do with the company. I asked Verizon to please do not allow these charges to be billed to my account since ILD was not authorized to do so. Their response was that they had no control!

I was able to get through to ILD after a 22 minute wait. I spoke with a young woman named Elid #5356. She was not able to provide me with any information on who had authorized these charges. She agreed to cancel the service and give me a credit. She was not able to provide me with any type of confirmation number that would assure me that the credit was forth coming. She also said that the credit would not come through for 30-90 days! I asked her for information on nat'l Online and all she could provide me, after a 10 minute hold, was an address in Miami. This cost my business $154.24!

A small business in West Sunbury PA (2/7/03): A charge for $32.65 for an internet service that we did not order has been on our bill since Oct 2001. I called Sprint, they told me to call ILD. I called them and they said they would take off current month but could not go back. They gave me 1-888-948-1930 to call but there is no one answering at that number. Cost us $496.

Eric of Pullman WA (9/30/02):
I am the treasurer for our church. The Verizon telephone bill for the church, dated August 19, 2002 contained a bill from a company called ILD Teleservices for a "Nat'l Online Internet Monthly Fee" of $29.95. The phone number for ILD listed on the bill is 800 433-4518. On September 23, 2002 I placed a call to ILD Teleservices. After a 15-minute wait, I spoke with Miguel, who informed me that ILD simply passed the charges on, while the charges originate from a company called National Online Services. He gave me a phone number of 800 511 2077.

I called this number on September 23, 2002, and received a busy signal multiple times over a period of one hour. I called again on 9/30/2002, and after a 12 minute wait spoke with Tessa. She claims that Greg H authorized a free 30-day trial of this service on June 27, 2002. Upon expiration of the 30 day trial, they began to bill the church the $29.95 fee. I asked Tessa to cancel the service and remove the charges. She gave me a cancellation number. I asked her if she would remove the charges from the bill and she said that she could not do this. The best she could do was to cancel the service.

I spoke with Greg, the pastor of the church, who said that he did not authorize such a service, and does not remember even speaking with this company. The church uses a local ISP and has no reason to sign up for an alternative service. I was able to locate what appears to be the web site of National Online Internet Services at http://www.nonline.net/. The dialup numbers for this internet company are listed at http://www.nonline.net/dialup.html. Note that all such numbers would be long distance for the church, so it would make no sense for the church to sign up for such a service. I do not wish to pay the $30+ fee for the internet service that we never used. However, what I am more concerned about is the fact that other companies (possibly churches?) may be getting the same unauthorized charges and not realizing it.

Hans of Edmonds WA (8/27/03):
I have been billed for ILD's “National Online Internet Service” for the past 5 months on my Verizon phone bill, and I never signed up for their services. In fact, I already have Internet service through Verizon DSL since 1998; therefore I have never had any need for their ‘online service’ yet I have been paying for it for the past 5 months. I have tried calling their 800# dozens and dozens of times, only to get a busy signal.

I am trying to get a full refund from this company for the services I have been billed for in the past 5 months that I never received, nor used. The amounts are as follows: $29.95 service fee $.90 federal excise tax at 3.00% $2.58 state & local sales tax $33.43 @ 5 months = $167.15 Grand total refund

Rob of Washington DC (7/12/03):
The June and July 2002 Verizon phone bill for Army Distaff Foundation contained erroneous charges for $29.95 each month for services we never contracted for. I contacted National Online Serv and was told their billing department would contact me. No one ever did. The telephone number they gave me for the billing department was disconnected. The e-mail address they gave me for Ms Kathy McQuad (see below) in the billing department bounced back my messages.

We have now been charged $59.90 for services that we did not contract for and our staff time has been directed on a fruitless search to get this matter resolved.
