I was watching an infomercial called "Free Money", starring none other than the notorious Kevin Trudeau. It sounded too good to be true, and unfortunately it was. In the infomercial, he talks about only paying $19.95 plus shipping and handling (the amount of shipping and handling was completely undisclosed), and you get "5 ways to $5,000 absolutely free as our free gift." And if you call now, we'll even throw in Debt Cures they don't want you to know about, absolutely free. He continued talking about the Debt Cures book being absolutely free. When I called in to order, I'm then told that Free Money is $19.95 plus $11.95 shipping and handling. Then, I'm told that with the Debt Cures book, which they still claim is "free", you do have to pay an additional $11.95 "processing and handling" for the Debt Cures book. After already making us pay $11.95 for the processing and handling of the Free Money book!
So, basically, they were going to make me pay $23.90 "processing and handling" for 3 books. For this, I was expecting them to be shipped FedEx overnight, or at least FedEx 2-3 day delivery. But no, they then tell you that "due to incredible demand, it is taking between 3-4 weeks for delivery," which tells me they are mailing these worthless pieces of garbage that any high school kid could type up via the U.S. Mail, probably at bulk rate which couldn't cost any more than $5.00 maximum for postage. Anyway, after taking my credit card information, they proceed to offer me the "deluxe upgrade package" for $99.00, which I declined, because it sounded extremely cheesy and stupid, not to mention expensive. From the sounds of the "deluxe upgrade package", that should be thrown in as the free gift.
They flaunt how they will throw in information on how to get your free credit report every year, offer a consultation with a "wealth advisor", and offer 10 months of $10.00 rebates for gas or Walmart purchases, which "is like getting the deluxe upgrade for free!" Well, first of all, everyone knows that everyone is entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the 3 credit bureaus. That is common knowledge. We also know that very few people take the time to send in rebates. Not worth the hassle, and I'll bet the rebates, if they ever come at all, take 6 months to get your check for $10.00 after you jump through all the hoops of filling out the forms, sending in the receipts, etc. And this "free consultation with a wealth counselor", I'm as sure as I'm sitting here is some other sales person who would try to hawk more of Kevin Trudeau's complete scams for more of my hard earned money.
Next, came the offer for the "Free Money Newsletter for only $14.95 per month." Whatever! That's nearly $200.00 per year for, according to online reviews from people who have subscribed to it, a complete fluff! Apparently, there is nothing in these newsletters except fluff, and referring people back to his website which charges a fee to subscribe to or buying his books! Next, they tried to "upgrade" me to "express shipping." After already paying $23.90 for "shipping and handling" on 3 little books, they then want to charge me more money for express shipping. I said, "No, no, no." Next, the operator said, "One moment while I confirm your order." I thought that was when I was going to get my order totaled because I was going to make sure I was only being charged $31.90 for the Free Money book ($19.95) plus the shipping and handling ($11.95).
I had already declined the "free" Debt Cures book, which of course is not free; they make you pay an additional $11.95 for shipping and handling. But anyway, the operator said, "Your order is now confirmed." And I asked what my total was. The operator said, "$43.85." I said, "How did you come up with $43.85?" His response was that I am getting the Free Money book and the free 5 Ways to $5,000 for $19.95 plus $11.95 shipping and handling, plus the "free" Debt Cures book for additional $11.95 shipping and handling, which makes the total of $43.85. I then said, "Cancel the entire order."
So then, the operator proceeded to tell me he can't cancel my order because it's already been confirmed. I said, "I want to talk to your supervisor." He then told me, "You can't talk to my supervisor because I am working out of my home and we don't have supervisors available. The only thing I can do is give you the phone number for customer service." I told the operator that I was going to file a complaint with my state Attorney General's office, as well as the Federal Trade Commission for complete and utter false advertising, and deceptive practices.
While these products are probably complete junk and worthless, it is still completely acceptable to offer them for sale. It's also completely legal to charge fair shipping and handling fee for the product. But what is not acceptable, nor legal, is to continue flaunting all these additional things and claiming they're "absolutely free", both in the infomercial and even on the phone call to the operator standing by. They have to clearly disclose not only that there is an additional shipping and handling fee for each individual item selected, and the cost of the shipping and handling!
Then to make matters worse, I have tried calling their customer service number for 3 days in a row to tell them I want my order cancelled, and an immediate credit to my credit card before the order is shipped (which shouldn't be too hard since it takes them 4-5 weeks for the order to be shipped since I declined the "express shipping"). I am going to try for two more days. But if I still can't get through to customer service, I am going to dispute the charge on my American Express card. But regardless, even if they do end up crediting my American Express, I am still going to file a complaint with my state Attorney General's office for deceptive practices and false advertising as well as the Federal Trade Commission.
