While in a shopping center, I was approached by a male and female trying to sell audio equipment. They had ordering requests, magazine ads, pamphlets, and a mileage log. I was slightly interested in a set of two studio theatre speakers advertised at $2,000 in one of their magazines. They told me whatever I could offer for them they could sell me them.

So for $200 they walked me out to a white van and unloaded the speakers. These are not $2,000 speakers, they're are maybe worth $50. My fault for buying out of a van.

This is a scam that has been around the Washington, D.C., area for as long as we can remember. No doubt it occurs elsewhere in the country as well. Beyond the danger of being scammed, buying things from strangers in parking lots and garages is a good way to get mugged ... or worse.
