In January 2007, I received upon request injections of Botox for brow wrinkles. No problems after then. In May 2007, I received a second Botox injections in the brow area because the smoothing effects had dissipated. Then 5 to 6 days later, I began to have progressive loss of lower extremity muscle strength that became so disabling requiring assistance to get up from a sitting position. Progressive along with that, I experienced the sensation of needing to enhance my respiratory muscles for breathing, but not a true feeling of dyspnea or shortness of breath. From the months of June and July, I used a walking stick for support and finally by Mid-August of 2007, I could motivate on my own.
Prior to that, I had been an avid Elk hunter in Colorado at 8,000 to 9,000 ft. After this injury, I gave that up. I still have an estimate of 25% reduction in strength that limits my distance when walking and especially climbing stairs. I have had cardiovascular evaluations with no CV causes identified. I continue to have some problems negotiating over rough terrain and cannot walk as fast as others my age.
I consider myself to have been in good physical condition at the time of the injury since I was working out at a local gym 3 times a week. I advise anyone who wants Botox to be aware of the potentially serious side effects. I did not appreciate the M.D. who gave me the injections denying that the injury had no relationship to Botox when I informed him of my problem. He suggested a neurological evaluation which I did not choose using my own medical judgment to guide me.
