Friedman's Jewelers

Friedman's is the third largest jewelry retailer in the country. The Georgia-based company likes to say it is the largest chain within the 20 Southeastern and Midwestern states where most of its 681 stores are located.

The company says it has established itself as the "Value Leader" by offering a broad array of quality merchandise at competitive prices. It has also skillfully located its stores in high traffic locations where its target audience shops. All this sounds great, although not all of Friedman's customers are dazzled by the service, quality and refund policies.

There've also been some questions about the chain's financing policies, including a class-action lawsuit and a challenge by the Attorney General of Texas.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints we've received:

Linda of Big Spring TX (04/01/09)
I bought a ring that was supposed to be 1/2 cart and the band was supposed to be 14 cart white gold. When I had it appraised it was worth only 35 dollors. The diamonds are fake and only a very small amount of gold. I paid 199.00 on sale price at valentine 2-13-08. I also paid 32.99 dollors for protection. My recept has a money back gurantee. thank you

I am very hurt that the consummer can be cheated this way. My husband bought me this ring in good faith and now I have a worthless piece of jewelery from him this hurt me very much because he realley could not afford it but he wanted to give me somethinh nice.

Sonya of Dickson, TN March 31, 2009

Sonya of Dickson TN (03/31/09)
My husband bought a wedding set and a tennis bracelet the Christmas of 2006. The bracelet broke with in the first three months luckily we had purchased the insurance on it, so they fixed it. However, it has broke 3 additional times since then. It takes at least 6 weeks to get it back from repair so it was in repair almost as much as I wore it. The last time it broke they said it was out of warranty and wouldn't fix it without me having to pay.

My argument of course is this is the 5th time it has broken, if they cared at all about the customer they would have gave me another one but they said they could only give me a trade in value on it for a more expensive one. The bracelet now sets in my jewlrey box broken. The ring was good up until about 6 months ago when the diamond became loose and the Friedmans that we had purchased it from had closed down. So I had to take it somewhere else and pay for it to be fixed.

The same Christmas my Dad bought my mom a bracelet and unlike mine they only fixed hers once before they closed down. So hers to sit in a box, broken.

Jamie of Monroe, NC March 6, 2009

Jamie of Monroe NC (03/06/09)
My husband and I purchased our wedding rings from Friedmans in 2003. We paid extra for the appraisal. I took my ring in every few months to get claened and appraised, then all of the sudden around August 2008 I went in to get my rings checked out and the store was no longer there. There was no sign, no one knew anything in the Monroe Mall except that they went bankrupt.

Now we have a useless piece of paper (that we followed by religiously) that is worth nothing and rings that something could ahppen to and we will have to fork out a bunch of money to fix ourselves. If I would have known what the future held, we would have gone somewhere else that was more established. I guess you live and learn. Nothing is forever.

Shawna of Cabot, AR March 3, 2009

Shawna of Cabot AR (03/03/09)
I purchused several rings from Friedman's in Cabot, Arkansas. I also purchused diamond bond warrenties with all of them. Now my wedding ring has lost half of a diamond and my other ring lost the 1carrot diamond in it. I have nowhere to take them since all of the stores in Arkansas are out of business. It is going to be very costly to replace the diamonds in my rings. That is the reason that I purchused the warrenties. I either want my rings fixed or my money back.

I am wearing a ring that has half of a diamond in it and I cannot even wear my other rings due to the diamond is missing.

Leronda of Lithonia, GA March 2, 2009

Leronda of Lithonia GA (03/02/09)
My boyfriend bought me 2 rings from this company and the diamonds started falling out. I tried to look them up and could no longer find them. I then saw the multiple complaints and similar situations and it made so angry. I am angry because the 2ct diamond ring that I thought I was getting for my birthday is probably fake just like some of the other stories.

The worst part is, there is nothing I can do about it. The rings are beautiful but that doesn't matter when the diamonds are fake and falling out. These were given to me on special occasions and now they are worthless. Im so happy they closed down before we could purchase our wedding bands. These rings costs upward to 2,000 combined and its a sentimental loss to me as well as a financial loss to my boyfriend.
