Lydia of Katy TX (1/26/04):
I was recently diagnosed with kidney stones and unable to work to pay rent; therefore I broke my lease and moved in my parents house until I was better. I had a 6 month lease with them and stayed there for 2 and a half months. They are trying to charge me an estimated $3,000 for breaking the lease.

Now I know that when a person breaks thier lease they have to pay a fine, UNLESS the apartment complex is able to rent out that apartment right away. Which they did as I checked on it only two weeks after I left. I should only owe them $1,000 and they have already decided to keep my security deposit of $300.

I contacted the apartment's manager (Linda) and explained my situation to her and she said that we could do a payment plan. When I called back her daughter (Holly) was extremly rude and unwilling to go along with what her mother and I had already agreed upon. Therefore I informed her that I would not pay anything if the previous agreement was met. There is no way I should owe them $3,000 for an apartment that was rented out immediatly after I left!

I am unable to purchase a vehicle through a dealer, move into another apartment, and it has kept me from acquiring a bank account with my company. Being a 23 year old female is uneasy as it is but having gone from No Credit to Bad Credit instantly has damaged my credibility. This apartment and a phone bill are the only things keeping me from having good credit.
