Thomas Built School Buses Recalled

Federal safety regulators are recalling 33,303 Thomas Built school buses manufactured by Freightliner LLC because of a potential fire hazard.

Auto reset circuit breakers used in the buses can malfunction and cause a Tyco PC board to melt, “potentially resulting in a vehicle fire,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“A fire can occur possibly resulting in a crash,” NHTSA reports on its Web site.

The 2001 to 2008 model year buses were manufactured from October 23, 2000 through January 24, 2006.

Freightliner has not provided NHTSA with a proposed remedy for the fire hazard.

The recall is expected to begin in February 2008.
