Equifax in Trouble Again

Equifax can't keep anything straight ... and doesn't seem to try very hard. For the second time, the company has been penalized by the Federal Trade Commission for not responding to consumer inquiries. That will come as no news to the hundreds who've written to us, including those below:

I have been sending corrections to Equifax off and on for the last 6 years trying to have them correct issues that appear on my credit report. They are the only credit agency that I have to constantly fight with to get my information right on my credit report. They also are usually the one that scores me the worst every time. Even when it is public record or I send them in paperwork to prove that, my information is valid, they still never do it right the first or second time. It is always months before they get it right.

Than sometimes I have found that when I go back to check and see if they have corrected it months later, they have changed it back to a derrogatory status again. I am beginning to feel like someone has flagged my file as being a trouble file and no one wants to deal with it so they don't!! I feel like now this is personal.

-Continuously low credit scores. Normally atleast 30-50 points lower than the other two reporting agencies. -Suffering higher than necessary interest due to Equifax offsetting my credit score and making the average score (when added with the other two reporting agencies),become lower. -Longer than necessary time needed to fix the problem, even when I present paperwork to confirm my statements. -Having to repeatly ask them to fix my file for the same issues more than twice.

I have an error on my credit report and Equifax has made it literally impossible to contact them. I was unable to file a dispute on line because there is a 'freeze' on my credit report. They requested I send in numerous proof of my identity even though I provided all the information requested. Their email link DOES NOT WORK! The phone number provided was a constant busy! You have to be more than persistent to contact this agency.

I finally was able to order a paper copy of my credit report which should arrive in about 15 days. Their practices are totally unacceptable and what recourse does a consumer have. The account I had with JC Penney has been closed since 2002 because the first bill I received from them included late charges. After many months of trying to resolve their billing error I closed the account. I never paid a late charge or a late payment on this account. I no longer do busines with JC Penney.

Last year my car insurance company sent me a form along with my renewal explaining I was being surcharged due to my credit report. That was when I first found out about the practices of these credit reporting agencies. I feel the consumer is being held captive. I know the information is incorrect and I have other accounts that have always been in good standing.

Me and my husband have no mortgage on our home which we paid off years ago and almost zero debt because we use our credit cards carefully. We value our credit and feel this has affected us for no good reason. We are both over 65 and this has caused us undo stress over something that is being reported incorrectly. As I mentioned I closed the account with JC Penney because of their billing errors. I had only charged a little over 30 which turned out to be a huge mistake for all the aggravation this has caused us. Please help us resolve this!

I have tried several times to recieve a copy of my credit report only to be told that there has been too many inquirys on my record. The last time I actually received a report was on 3/27/2005. its imparative that I obtain this information

Linda of Columbia, MD August 23, 2008

All 3 bureaus have mixed my creidt file with a similar name, I had the police involved based on a this issue, believing it to be a fraud issue. It's not. It's the stupidity of the 3 bureaus. I have rpeeatedly asked them to update my files, in wiritng, online and over the phone. NOTHING EVER GETS UPDATED, THEY FIX NOTHING. THEY CHANGE NOTHING!

MY CREDIT IS [ruined] BECUASE OF THEIR INEPTITUDE!

I just wanted to pay a fee to get all three credit reports in one, not join a club.
