Equifax in Trouble Again

Equifax can't keep anything straight ... and doesn't seem to try very hard. For the second time, the company has been penalized by the Federal Trade Commission for not responding to consumer inquiries. That will come as no news to the hundreds who've written to us, including those below:

I placed a request to have something removed from my credit report. They contacted me via email with a conformation code and sent me a link to a form where I was to use this code along with other info; street number, last name, last four digits s.s. #, numbers from my street address. I filled out the form and it told me there was no information. I have had other problems with thier website and I am at the end of my rope with this company. The other two companies I delt with concerning this issue were simple and I am satisfied with their service.

I think Equifax is an awful company and I hope they are investigated soon for their constant screw ups. Maybe they are leaking my personal information all over the place with their bumbling habits.

They list me as living in Graniteville South Carolina. I don't even know where that is. I have only lived in Greenville and Seneca, SC. I requested to know where they got this information and they said it was accurate. There has been no identity theft, they have made a mistake that they refuse to correct.

This is showing up on an Equifax Credit Report. Problem 1. This is not a law firm 2. it is reporting a medical expense that has been paid in full 3. my efforts to contact this number have resulted in getting an answering machine and they do not return the call 4. when I googled the address to get directions to see if it existed the number is listed to a residence in Atlanta and not the one above

After applying for cel phone service, and having been denied, without a security deposit, I later received a letter about where to retrieve my free credit report. So, I followed the procedure as requested by the letter from at&t, called Equifax, then went online, paid the fee, and was then told I cannot retrieve my report online. call 1-800, I did, and was told the same thing, go online and place your order. And three times later, here I am typing this report to find out what, why, and who did this. I just want to see who I need to, in order to view and try and clean up my report,as a full time student, money is scarce and hard to come by. After applying for private student loans and constantly being denied, I need to know why.

I'm unable to secure work, any type of finacial benefits, buy books for school, this semester, I need a laptop for web design class, and cannot afford one. I applied for credit at Best buy, got turned down for a Six hundred dollar laptop. I ca'nt get my teeth repaired because I have no insurance, because my credit report is so elusive, I don't know what I look like to the world. So, no job, no teeth and money to complete college. What happened to the American dream, I've served in the Army, served my country, and now I can't even see my own credit history? Is the American dream just that, your ability to pursue that happiness, it's not really there for you to have? Tell me I'm wrong, please...

Katherine of Beverly, MA September 2, 2008

Katherine of Beverly MA (09/02/08)
Earlier this year, my husband and I paid to place a security freeze on our credit reports at all 3 credit reporting agencies. When we requested our annual free copy of the reports by phone on the automated ordering system, Transunion and Experian complied without incident. Equifax wrote back saying we needed to supply our 10 digit PIN in writing and gave an address to which the information had to be sent. This we did.

We then received letters stating that the only way to order credit reports was through the automated phone service. Assuming it may have been a glitch that had since been sorted out, we again ordered the Equifax reports by phone. We have again received the same letter, saying that our file is blocked from unauthorized disclosure and we cannot process your request without your 10 digit personal identification number (PIN)?.

There is apparently no way out of this loop - except presumably to pay to lift the credit freeze and then pay again to reinstate it. Clearly we are not unauthorized recipients of our own credit reports. Equifax has established a system whereby it is impossible to obtain the free annual copy of credit report they are legally required to provide. We are entitled to place a freeze on our credit reports and are paying for the privilege, which would not have been necessary if the credit reporting agencies did not disclose our information as freely as they have in the past. We should not have to pay for the freeze to be lifted and then reinstated in order to see our own reports. Having frozen the reports, it is ridiculous to deny us access to our own credit reports. We have filed a complaint with the FTC. Everyone else should do the same. It is ludicrous that this company has so much power and there is no recourse against these types of practices.
