Equifax in Trouble Again

Equifax can't keep anything straight ... and doesn't seem to try very hard. For the second time, the company has been penalized by the Federal Trade Commission for not responding to consumer inquiries. That will come as no news to the hundreds who've written to us, including those below:

Cannot contact these people. Only have automated services. No live contact. They continue to report eronious information. Does anyone even work here? They have an online dispute section but you can't disbute anything unless you buy one of their services. And you can't get a live person on the phone to help reset security profiles.

Because of the wrong information my credit score dropped from 700 to 576. This company is the most incompetant outfit I have ever delt with.

This credit bureau should be investigated by the feds. It is a scam pure and simple with absolutely no way to correct a credit report that is outright wrong. You cannot obtain your free credit report as they run you around every angle, write to this address, no another address, I then forwarded my request to the right address to get a letter back telling me that my free credit report was going to cost me 7.95.

Forget about obtaining it on-line for free. Without the report you cannot dispute any incorrect information - period! So, you are denied credit, run ragged for a company that is allowed to ruin people's lives unchecked.

Being denied a home loan because I have not avenue to correct incorrect information on my Equifax report.

I tried to retreive my credit information and was refused by Equifax

R of North Richland Hills, TX October 28, 2008

R of North Richland Hills TX (10/28/08)
When I and two family members paid Equifax in Atlanta, Georgia to add a security freeze on each of our accounts, they failed to send us our PIN numbers. When we switched utility companies, we were told we had to pay a deposit based on info from Equifax and were given the address Equifax, PO Box 674402, Houston TX 77267-4402 to receive the credit information provided by Equifax under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The letter was returned not deliverable as addressed.

I also requested a free report by phone and received a letter from Equifax in Atlanta, GA stating I had to send the PIN number or they would not send me my report. The Equifax letter offered to sell me my credit score for 7.95 without a PIN number. A replacement PIN number can be had for 10 each netting them another 30. It appears this whole ordeal is designed to extort more money.

I called the Equifax number furnished by the utility company 800-392-7816 and was told Texas residents have to use CSC for Equifax reports and that is the reason we were not given PIN numbers AND the rep told me to send a copy of my social security card and a copy of my driver's license to yet a different PO Box addressed to CSC for the report. None of the three credit reporting agencies ever asked for these copies. Red Flag Alert!

I asked for and received credit reports from Experian and TransUnion and received them without a demand for a PIN number for MY credit report to be sent to me. If you failed to receive your PIN number from Equifax, please complain to the FTC and your state Attorney General's office.

Nancy of Depew, NY October 24, 2008

Nancy of Depew NY (10/24/08)
I attempted to get my free annual credit report from Equifax. I received a confirmation number FACT413141097. The final screen said to click here to view my credit report. When I did, it took me to a log on screen and asked for my loin information. I was never requested login information. When I tried to call them I got only recordings for different scenarios, none of them pertaining to my need. I listened to each one, which was only a recording and then disconnected me.

When I tried to discuss with Equifax by email, it kept telling me I could, if I log in. I got another 1-800 # for Equifax and both the operator who could not help me and the supervisor who refused to help me and then hung up on me when I said I was filing a complaint, were EXTREMELY rude and refused contact information to file this complaint.
