Equifax in Trouble Again

Equifax can't keep anything straight ... and doesn't seem to try very hard. For the second time, the company has been penalized by the Federal Trade Commission for not responding to consumer inquiries. That will come as no news to the hundreds who've written to us, including those below:

Iris of Atmore, AL August 19, 2009

I haven't always done right with my credit. Its very important that I take action and do right now,If I have disputed 8000.00 plus negative infomation from my report with all 3 credit burea agencies,my points has increased well with all EXCEPT Equifax and no one can explain why or let me talk to anyone that could explain why or who I could write to.They have people thats not trained to answer question ,that can't understand english or speak clear english. They have made me feel like I'm working for nothing I thought with each dispute thats settled your fico score should improve who govern this company and who can I talk to Its like no communicating with this company unless you are buying there products. They only have knowledge of trying to sell you something and they read from a script for that ,they can't help you with your credit question not even the supervisor they have no knowledge at all. Please help !If I can work to pay my bills on time now,and dispute alot of negative info that wasn't mine why my points haven't increased with this company and how often do they redo your fico score .If it was something negative they wouldn't wast time decreasing my points. This company should not be allowed to get away with this behavior .They could do what they want to people and their credit. They don't care about the consumer. Its not their credit thats in question. Someone Please Help Me .I feel very defenseles.

Saad of Jersey City, NJ August 18, 2009

I was denied credit by Citibank NA and PenFed based on credit reports provided by Equifax. I have been trying to get access to my credit report online through Equifax's website as mandated under FACRA rules, however Equifax has blocked online access to the credit report.

William of Menomonie, WI August 17, 2009

I believe that Equifax is attempting to deny me access to my free annual credit report as required by federal law. In early July 2009 I filed my annual credit report request, the same month as in 2008. Since Equifax received the request a few days prior to the July date on my 2008 report, I soon received a letter from Equifax stating that I had received my free report within a 12-month period and that I could purchase a new report. I waited until August 2009 to file a second request. Today, I received another letter from Equifax informing me that they could not verify my information. The information I sent Equifax in July and August 2009 was the exact information I used in 2008 to request my free credit report, which was provided in 2008. I had no problem getting my free annual credit report from Experian in 2009 using the exact same request form that I used to request my free credit report from Equifax. I believe that Equifax is attempting to cheat me out of my free annual credit report.

Clayton of Billings, MT August 13, 2009

I went and got an account with Equifax, and account with Transunion Truecredit, and an account with Experian's freecreditreport. What doesn't make any sense is why the one bureau is reporting a bogus number for another bureau. I called Equifax and kept telling me they are on a different scoring system. I would agree this would be an excuse for why their own number is different from than the other two, but I don't think they should be using their own formula to GUESS what the other credit agencies numbers are.

I have bad credit, and so thats the reason why I signed up. I figured out that if I disputed information, the credit agency has 30 days to remove the information from my credit report. Equifax sent me an email saying they can take up to 45 days. I read the Fair Credit Reporting Act and it says only if I give relevant information about the dispute within those 30 days, they can extend the dispute by 15 more days.

MARGIE of WENDELL, NC August 10, 2009

Sent letter to Equifax on 07/07/08 requesting they permanently remove the "credit freeze" from my account. I included 10 check 4 forms of Id and letter stating I misplaced pin. July 14, Equifax responded with a form letter indicating they needed 10 check, 3 forms of Id and the pin # in order to permanently remove the freeze. I replied with a copy of my original letter indicating that I sent all of the above plus additional ID. To date they have not responded or removed the credit freeze. They do not supply a phone number to contact them and I at a loss. It is important that I have the credit freeze permanetly removed because I have been applying for work and employers cannot complete the credit background check on me. Please help, this is a nightmare. Thank you in advance.

Donald of Hurst, TX August 10, 2009

The trouble started 3 years ago this September. My father passed away & my brother Dewayne paid for the funderal. Shortly after Dewayne started getting biild & mail having combination of his name & Dad's name. His Equifax report then had his info & a mixture of Dad's. A few months later I started gettingg mail with a combination of all 3 of our names.

I bought a new Nissan in 2008. The credit manager said several of the banks they use had turned me down because I had my name on 5 different vehicles (from my brothers construction business. I told the manager we had only the car we were trading. He showed me my Equifax report that had different combination of all 3 of our names. I also rec'd a letter from walmart regqading my charge card & they were lowering my limit due to my Equifax report.

I hav4 called & spoke with 3 different reps who can not find a file on me at all. They say it doesn't exist. It is so screwed up that it has everybodys info on there. Howevver, when I applied for a loan last week I got an email from Equifax saying there was an inquiry on my file. So I called again, and the same thing happened again. There is no file on me. I asked for a supervisor & was placed on hold, no one ever picked up. I called the bank & spoke with the loan officer & again was told that my name, dad's name, Dewayne's name & several combinations of all 3 were listed. She said the funny thing was that she could find no S.S. # on there. The loan officer also pulled up my report from Experian credit reporting & my score was over 200 points higher there & the info was only mine.

I can get no help from Equifax, I even sent a form requesting my report with copies of my drivers license, SS card, utility bills, + anything I could think of to prove who I am. Again rec'd a letter stating they have no file on me. Yet they find somehting to send my creditors. I need help but don't know where to turn next.

Roel of McAllen, TX August 4, 2009

I canceled my 3 in 1 program last July 08. I went to buy a new car on August 1, 09 with the Cash for Clunker govt. program and found out that my credit report was still frozen, even though I had canceled over a year earlier, and the car company had my new car on hold. I called Equifax Saturday and they were going to try their best to have it unfrozen by Monday. I called on Monday and Valerie, Sr. Tech, said that it would take 5-7 days for it to come off; this delay would have cost me 4500.00 from the clunker program.

I offered twice to repurchase the program, so we could unfreeze it, but I was told that that would not work. I asked Valerie to speak to her higher ups , so that they could help me resolve this, but she kept saying that no one was available and she could not give me their names or where to call them. Frustrated, I told her that if I were to lose the 4500.00 due to their failure to cancel my frozen account, I would consider suing them. Valerie said she could no longer "help" (Ha) me.

After that call, I rejoined the program and called Customer Care to show me how to lock and unlock my account. The agent was very helpful and she was able to help me unlock it. Later that day, I was able to purchase my car! The following day, I called to cancel my program. When asked why, I told the agent my story and she put me on hold. Valerie came back on the phone and I told her I was able to take care of it when she could not. She told me that the agent that helped me would be 'talked to", because they shouldn't had helped me.

It is obvious that they do not have the customer's best interest at heart. Had I not reacted quickly, I would have lost the 4500.00 in the Cash for Clunker program. Valerie is a prime example of what is wrong with Customer Service today. Instead of solutions, she gave me obstacles. I became very frustrated, but at least now I have my new 2010 vehicle. I still want to file a complaint with her Company or the FTC. Equifax should be able to handle emergencies at a faster rate than 5-7 days; I did it in 20 minutes.

Brian of Mississauga, ON July 30, 2009

I received a letter in the mail from Wells Fargo which had someone elses name on it using my home address, I called them and they told me that it was Equifax in the USA that supplied the address. To this date either company is cooperating. I am NOT a customer of Wells Fargo or Equifax. I just want to know HOW equifax got my address!

Susan of Los Angeles, CA July 28, 2009

My business Overdraft Line of Credit with Washington Mutual Bank ("WaMu")was cancelled due to "negative information on my credit report". When I received said credit report, no negative info at all was contained therein. Two erroneous addresses were listed in the credit report - BUT MY CORRECT ADDRESS IS NOT LISTED AT ALL. I completed Equifax's "research request form" in order for them to correct the info and attached a copy of my driver's license as evidence of my correct address. They did not respond after 90 days, so I called and was told that a letter was sent - TO THE WRONG ADDRESS THEY HAD FOR ME.

Equifax will not correct the information. They say that Wamu must correct it, but WaMu no longer exists and I no longer have an account with them. Equifax confirmed that wrong info is basically "carved in stone" if the creditor no longer exists or is unwilling to correct it. Their "research request form" is a sham and their dispute phone line is unhelpful. I have been trying to get this coorected for over 3 months.

I was robbed 900 (150 each year since 2004) unknowingly for what has been legally proven as an illegal predatory practice with the very same companies that were involved in the class action lawsuit.

Sandra of Milton, KY July 27, 2009

Two months ago I tried to get a bank card after the lady ran my credit report she treated me like I was a criminal. My husband works out of state so we need some way for him to send me money without costing us a fortune. So we went to walmart and got a prepaid debit card, when I called to activate it they said they needed more information so I faxed them the information I never got my permanent card. So saturday my husband purchased a green dot card we couldn't activate it either. They said the information didn't match up.so I got my credit report. The only name they had for me was my maiden name, and the birthdate was completely wrong.wrong month, wrong day, wrong year. That would make me 9 years older than I really am. I want this corrected but I can't get ahold of a person I am very angry.
