United States Kennel Club

Wayne, NY

Nicole of Little Falls, NJ (10/10/03):
On September 14, 2003 I purchased a Basset Hound puppy from the United State Kennel Club also known as the New York Kennel Club. On the way home from the kennel club, my puppy vomited in the car. I thought that it was probably car sickness. He would not eat anything that night and just constantly drank a lot of water.

The next morning he ate some of his food, which we had to hand-feed him, and then he vomited again. So, I called my vet and I brought him in. They gave him a shot for the vomiting and sent me home. He was okay for a couple of days and then he started vomiting up bile and his food. So, I brought him back to my vet where he spent the whole day. The vet took x-rays and noticed that his esophagus was swollen and there was something in his stomach, which he believed to be food. So, he sent him home and told me not to feed him for the rest of the night and feed him in the morning as long as whatever was in his stomach came out.

However, when I got home that night my puppy started vomiting up bile nonstop. My vet was closed so I brought my puppy to the West Caldwell Animal Hospital where they kept him overnight and did a series of barium x-rays. The vet here said that his intestines were inflamed. So, he gave him Metoclopramide, which was to stop the vomiting that I could give him at home. I picked him up the next morning and brought him into my vet so he could check him again. He did another x-ray and believed there was something in his intestines. So, he referred me to Oradell Animal Hospital where they did an extensive amount of blood work, ultrasound, de-wormed him, and other tests.

They believed that he had some type of parasite, but they could not detect exactly what type and gastroenteritis. So, they sent him home with medicine and he was okay for a couple of days and then it started over again. Now let me say that the kennel did reimburse me for all of the vet bill in that 14-day period. However, now he is in Oradell Animal Hospital where he has already spent one night and we will be spending the second night. They believe that he may have Addison's Disease and if not then he will have to have surgery to see what is going on. I have two certificates from two vets stating that my puppy was unfit for purchase.

If he has Addison's Disease he will need to be treated constantly and if he needs surgery then who knows what they may find. I would like to be reimbursed for these portion of the vet bills and I would like the United State Kennel Club or New York Kennel Club investigated.
