Shanna of Independence MO (06/30/08) I worked for Petco for a short period, until I realized how unrealiable and uncaring the company is. I now work for an all-natural pet food store, so I have been keeping an eye on competing food such as Nutro and Science Diet. I can't read anymore about the pets who have died after eating Nutro. It breaks my heart. I just don't want consumers to believe that everything is ok just because a store employee says it is. They are not informed about product issues, or educated about ingredents. Trust your instincts and do your OWN research!
Many pets have become ill or worse.
Deb of Hopewell Junction NY (06/24/08) I work at a Pet Company in upstate New York. My sole job is to take care of the puppies: make sure everyone is clean, healthy, eating well, and as comfortable as possible. I agree with a lot of people's comments about the dogs cages being small and I do feel bad that they have to walk on the mesh all the time. As an animal lover, I do what ever I can to make these dogs feel as good as they can in the situation.
Every dog has a mat to lay on, and hopefully soon, they will have small cloth beds. The dogs get fed twice a day, and have a constant supply of water available to them. Also, we have a vet that gives them check-ups once a week. Of course I would rather see them free and out of the cages, but for the most part their time in the pet shop is short, because they get sold to loving families.

I was an employee and the cages are so small...there is no padding, just grates and the cages are only cleaned twice a day. The dogs themselves are only cleaned when they are covered in their own feces or right before they are off to their new home. In the back (employee only room) there was a closet where there were a few cages installed for the sick dogs. There were 5 cages and at the time there were 6-8 sick dogs. There was a dead bird in a cage. The employees are not trained professionals (I was 16 yrs old with NO experience).
I ended up doing a "no call-no show" and was fired. I could NOT go through one more day of watching those poor mistreated animals (not just the dogs) suffer in their cages.

I sent a complaint last week to ConsumerAffairs.com about my experience at a Pet Company store in Danbury Ct., how the dogs were sitting in feces, eating it, and the whole situation was sad and horrible...tonight I read all of the complaints from many different states about this company and obvious cruelty to the puppies. Why doesn't anyone shut them down? It is happening at many of their stores.
I was appalled reading about all of these sick puppies, and how they are so starved they are eating their feces. It breaks my heart reading all of those posts. Someone needs to step in and help these poor animals.

On February 17, 2007, I was in Stonecrest Mall in Lithonia, GA. I went into The Pet Company store and looked at the puppies they had for sale. I was shocked to see the conditions the puppies were living in. One puppy's cage floor was covered in feces. He couldn't lay down anywhere without being in it. Some of them were very skinny and lethargic. Another puppy was so hungry, she was eating her own feces. That's disgusting. I have never seen anything so inhumane as The Pet Company store.
HM of Scarsdale NY (07/01/06) I was in the Pet Company buying a dog with my son. The place reeked of foul odors and the dog cages were filthy with dog feces all over some of the cages (it was everywhere and we did mention it to the staff). The dogs had to sit in their urine and I did not see water in any of the cages for them to drink. There were two or more dogs in some of the cages. Some of the dogs looked sickly and pathetic. We bought a dog and had to return it because after we got home he was vomiting and kept having bloody diarrhea. He was a very nice dog and it was very sad to have to return him after a day. I feel sad to think what might happen to him now.
Audrey of Lithia Springs GA (03/29/06) I am an employee at a local Pet Company store. As many have already heard we have had an outbreak of Giardia as well as Coccidia. I will be honest the problem lies not within the store employees but with our superiors. The amount of authority and power we have to treat this outbreak is limited. Many employees are frustrated and have quit because they are tired of being so under paid and treated like they mean nothing and/or they do not want to support Mary, our District Manager, who has encouraged us to re-use syringes (don't dare spend any more money). I, as well as many other store employees, were never aware or this outbreak untill recently. Our superiors on the other hand have known since January.
Some employees remain at the the store soley because of their love for these animals and want nothing less than the best. Many of our employees have devoted many hours, unpaid, to keeping the dogs in as best care as we can. Without approval from Mary J for proper medications and enviornmental issues we are at a dead end at what we can do. This company is very cheap
Eugene of New York NY (1/21/04):
I am an employee at the Pet Company and I really think that the way they pay you is illegal. They have a weekly goal wich is about $1500 and you are supposed to reach that goal in one pay period which is 2 weeks. If you don't sell enough to reach your goal you get paid $5.15 an hour which I think is less then minimum wage.
If you don't reach your goal twice, you're fired. They give you $70 for every thousand you make but that will be lost if you don't reach your goal. They make you work like crazy after the store closes for a very long time so I'm wondering who is paying me for the work I'm doing.
