Ol Roy Pet Foods

Josephine of rosenberg, TX August 4, 2009

We got ol'roys pet food and treats for our dogs and they seem to love it. However, I noticed that the food has hair/fur in it. It was in every kibble of dry dog food, and I am worried about the health of the dogs (not just mine, but those who buy the same dog food).

kristal of springville, UT July 16, 2009

I bought a large bag of dog biscuits and I found a buncha of spider webs in it and a very large grey spider. It really grossesd me out and I threw the bag away. I will not buy the ol roy products anymore and I will discourage anyone else from buying the product as well.

I have been giving my Pit Bulls the Ol Roy 5 flavor treats for some time with no problems now after about 2 weeks or so I have 8 out of 11 with such a bad case of Diarrhea that it is so hard to keep up after them. I have never had anything like this happen. These animals are not just pets they are family. Now they are not as playful and they are not eating like they should. This is so not right, but just what can a simple person do.

Diana of Dayton, OH June 19, 2009

On June 6, 2009 at 8:00 pm I gave my dog an English Bull Terrier an Ol'Roy Munchy Bone. Thirty minutes later she was havig mild stomach cramps and small bouts of loose bowels. By 9:00 p.m she was acting okay so I put her to bed and thought all was well. The next morning at 7:00 a.m we were awakened by sounds our dog was making in her crate and rushed to see what was wrong. She was vomiting and had diarrhea all over her and the crate. We rush her outside and clean her up and threw the bedding and toys from her crate into the wash. Not 15 minutes later she was cramping and had a milky white substance shooting 3 feet out of her rear end that curdled as soon as it hit the ground. Then she tired to come get some comfort and it happened again this time with more pain and she started screaming and shooting the milky diarrhea again. I grab her up and yell to my husband that we have to get to the emergency Vet now. She had lost so much fluid and was in pain.

As soon as we walk in the door to the emergency Vet they grab her from me and put her on IV's and are taking X-rays. The X-rays showed the Munchy Bone in her stomach not broken down or dissolving at all. They kept her until Monday evening and even then they were not 100% sure they should. But by Monday evening it looked like the bone was finally starting to break down and move through her system. So after 5 x-rays ,2 days of IV's, a test on her kidneys(checking for possible melamine damage), medications we have a bill of 1,068.00. My dog was doing better but she wasn't 100%. Then 10 days after she ate the bone she passed what was left of it in her stool. It was still in big pieces 1 1/2 to 2 inch pieces and as hard as plastic. But she is feeling much better now that it is out of her.

Another thing that we found troubling was her bedding and toys that she had thrown up on and soiled. I have washed them 8 times and soaked them in bleach 24 hours and they will not come clean. They are covered in a plastic like residue that nothing will get out. I went to WalMart to try to get my vet bill taken care of and they have been very kind and helpful. But the Ol'Roy people are trying to blame it on food allergies or her regular dog food, thinking she was on another brand of dog food. But for two weeks before the incident and still is a homemade diet because I don't trust bagged dog food. But they are saying they will look into it and get back to me.

My son's Giant Bulldog, Pon, at 6yrs became sick around the 12th of Jan 09 to the point that he was drinking 3 to 4 gallons of water a day. Our vet took blood tests and Pon was found to have some type of bacterial infection in his kidneys. The vet rechecked him after 2 weeks on antibiotics and Pon was found to have no infection. The weeked of the 13th of feb he was running a fever and the antibiotics were not helping.

On the 17th he went back to the vet and it was recommended that he be put on IV. Blood and and other tests were taken and results showed that his kidneys were or was shut down. Pon stayed at the vet thru the week and when the vet went to check on him around 10pm on the 21st of Feb to give him another IV, Pon was found to have passed on. The pic shows Pon on the 9th of Feb after getting groomed. The ladies at Petsmart were Shocked to find out that he had died so suddenly. The reason that these 3 different companies were contacted is that we had been using Dad's Ol Roy Kibbles Chunks & Chews as his main food. Del Monte was his canned food that would be mixed with his nightly meal. Purina Krunchy Bits & Bones would be added as a mix with either the canned or Kibbles as a veriety. Our vet bills totaled around 500 with the antibiotics, blood tests and private care. The bill from our vet is not what matters. What matters is that someway Pon's death could help this from happening to other pets and the pet food makers need to be held accountable for their actions and quit making fouled food products.

Thomas of Sequim, WA April 24, 2009

Re the Nutro pet food reports, we had a similar problem with diarrhea on the garage floor in the morning after we gave our 3 Border Collies Ol Roy biscuits from Wal-Mart as a good night treat. I thought it was table scraps that they sometimes got in their breakfasts but even when they did not get these for about a month the problem persisted. As soon as we changed from Ol Roy to Milk Bones the problem stopped and has not recurred even though they still get table scraps in their breakfasts.

I understand that Ol Roy is a marketing company that gets their products from the cheapest source. Significantly, in the Chinese melamine contamination problem their biscuits were pulled off the Wal-Mart shelves. I have not contacted the company since having spent my career in research in industry I know the kind of response to expect.

We have always fed my 1 yr old dog science diet, or Iams. Recently switched to Ol Roy about 1 month ago to save a buck. She started acting very lethargic at first. She was sleeping all the time. This is NOT her character at all! Just yesterday her stomach was bloating and she began to vomit 2-3 times. I got her to the vet, they gave her an anti nausea with anti gas injection. She still vomited 2 more times once we were home.

About 2 hrs later she began to foam at the mouth and shake. We went to let her outside and her hind legs kept giving out on her and she lost control of her bladder in the house, which she never does. She did make it through the night last night, she is extremely week. There is nothing else that she has eaten this last month other than Ol Roy. She is in a contained yard with nothing else that she could consume. I am convinced it is the food!

Spent 100 on vet bills yesterday 100 on carpet cleaner and steamer for the car and the house.

We have recently changed to Old Roy Dinner Bites. Both of our dogs have become sick. Our 4 yr. old lab is doing better now; but our 7 yr. old golden retriever is deathly sick. He has been throwing up for days and has diarrhea. He is now dry heaving, breathing heavily and cannot lay down or sit due to the pain in his stomach. It's unimaginable to believe that a manufacturer would continue to sell such a bad product that they know is causing animals so much pain and agony.

We have taken Rocket to the vet twice so far. He has pancreatitis. His pain is so bad they are giving him pain injections and keeping him on iv fluids. The cost so far is over 600.00. I went to Wal-Mart to buy new dog food that is low fat and high protein. I saw an employee on the dog food aisle and asked about the Old Roy Dinner Bites and he said it had been removed for repackaging. I've never heard of a retailer pulling merchandise until it's sold out! The retailers and manufacturers should all be held liable for allowing a product to be sold.
