Alpo Pet Foods

Mario of Houston, TX April 6, 2007

I started using purina alpo brand dry dog food about 3weeks ago. My dog FROSTY, a 10 years old Chiuahua became ill. Little did I know that the symptoms were heavy breathing, swelling of the stomach, for the illness caused by the bad dog food(Purina Alpo). My FROSTY died Thursday 4/5/2007 between 3pm and 6pm as I could only look at him and watch him die. The vet at the Houston SPCA that saw FROSTY told me that my dog may have had heart worms.

Connie of Fresno, CA April 6, 2007

We had our beloved dog Bama put down on Jan 7 because of sudden kidney failure. We had bought him Alpo cuts in gravy dog food, and I read in the paper today that the food tainted was the food manufactured around the time we fed it to him. We fed it to him in early December and he quickly declined over four weeks time, to the point we had him put to sleep. We just wonder.

We spent about 2,000 in vet bills, however the biggest expense has been our broken hearts. We miss him.

Lauren of Bellport, NY April 5, 2007

On 1/9/07 I brought one of my dogs to the vet because she had become ill. She was not eating, had a high fever and lost the ability to walk alone. She stayed over night at the vet, had tests done however, the vet was unable to find her problem. She was put on Baytril, Amoxi, & Rimadyl. She came home with me the next day. My dog (Zena) died suddenly on Feb. 24th, 2007.

Shortly after that I noticed my other dog, Bruiser, not acting himself. I called the vet and she indicated he could be mourning Zena's death. As he continued to mourn over the next couple weeks I grew concerned and made him a well visit with the vet. On 3/19/07 Bruiser had a urinalysis done and he was diagnosed with....KIDNEY FAILURE.

We immediately rechecked the list of dog foods that had just been recalled to see that we had not fed our dogs the tainted food. However, on or about 3/30/07 Alpo recalled their canned wet food. The same food we fed our dogs.

On 4/2/07 I finally, after numerous phone calls, got through to Alpo. After giving them my information and situation they assured me I would be receiving a call from Sedgwicks Claims Management who would be handling the case from then on. Bruiser in the meantime was getting worse by the day. He ate very little and what he ate he threw up. I went back to the vet with him and was sent home with an IV bag of fluids which I was to give him 500 ccs twice a day. By 4/4/07 he could not walk without assistance and had to be put down. Still no phone call back from Alpo or Sedgwicks.

My family, which includes my husband, daughter & 2 sons, had to loose 2 dogs -FAMILY MEMBERS- within 5 weeks of each other. My vet bills are in the thousands, my back went out from having to carry my 75 pound Boxers outside to help them go to the bathroom. I had to have someone with me 24/7 to help me with my children and to clean up after my sick dog and my husband had a car accident trying to get home from work to his totally distraught family the night we had to put Bruiser to sleep (the worst night of my life). My family is beyond physically and mentally exhausted from this.

Julie of Erie, PA April 5, 2007

I had to take my cat to the vet 1 month ago for her behavior of not eating, drinking, and loosing 5+ pounds. After all the tests and 1,000.00+ dollars spent on her she has permanent kidney damage and is in renal failure and has to receive I.V> fluids subcutaneous the rest of her life and take medication everyday to help her keep her specific food down. Her specific food cost 18.00 a bag and it is a small bag and routine blood work to see how her kidneys are doing.

Linda of Brewster, NY April 4, 2007

My dog had to be put to sleep as 2/20/07.  He was vomiting, lethargid and lost 4 pounds in 4 days. The first thing we did was check the pet food recall list but Alpo Prime Cuts was not on the list.  Yesterday I learned it was added.

Ken of St. Albans, VT April 1, 2007

I was feeding my puppy Alpo Prime Cuts with gravy..and now i find out that it is one of the products being recalled. Now my dog is drinking nearly 3 times as much as he did before and is having a very had time walking and even moving his back legs.

Nichole of Key West, FL March 31, 2007

I have two small chihuahuas that ate Alpo Prime Cuts dog food.  One of my dogs is currently in the hospital because her kidneys are failing. Sophie is only 6 months old and is very ill.  My other dog Charlie is beginning to show signs as well.  This has caused me a great deal of stress, time off work, money and possibly the lives of my animals.
