Dominicks Food Store |

Joseph of Marengo IL writes (6/13/02):
They were detained by the Dominicks security personnel--I believe caught on the store security cameras. They did not cause any disturbances but waited with security until the police arrived. The merchandise (batteries) were returned intact with no damage. They were arrested, handcuffed, and fingerprinted. Their mother arrived took them home etc. We followed up with the police -- took time from work to address the issue. This was a first time offense, never any problems prior to this unfortunate incident. In speaking with the case officer, he informed us that he knew that they were good kids, and he felt they understood that they made a mistake. There was no "criminal" punishment that needed to be done. But as parents, we elected that they would serve 10 hours a piece at the Schaumburg Public Library. We also of course imposed our own family punishment as a consequence for their actions. That was almost 3 months ago -- now Dominicks has contacted in a civil matter requesting that we pay $300.00 for the incident. I feel this is totally out of proportion in relation to the merchandise stolen, its value, and the fact it was returned intact for future sale. It's difficult to say what's going on here without seeing the documents. Perhaps the store is suing for its claimed expenses in connection with the matter? Joseph should contact an attorney. |
