As a manager of a hair salon in Nyack, NY, we were excited to try a new formaldehyde-free product. We currently use another straightening product that is formaldehyde-free (Coppola Keratin Treatment), but Brazilian Blowout promised shorter processing time for our clients.
Before using the Brazilian Blowout product on our clients, we decided to do a test run on my hair. I've used our other straightening product in the past and loved the results. When Brazilian Blowout was first applied to my hair, we were careful not to apply it directly to my scalp. Our stylists have been fully trained in applying keratin treatments and perform the regularly.
The Brazilian Blowout product had a very strong odor and caused eye watering and discomfort for both myself and the stylist applying it. The odor was so strong that one of our other clients who was receiving services complained about the heaviness in the air that made it hard for her to breathe.Though we tried hard not to apply this product to my scalp, it caused me intense pain during the processing time. The burning pain on my scalp was so terrible that we had to rinse it out before the processing time had even finished.
In the following days, my scalp developed multiple scabs and began peeling off in large flakes. This discomfort lasted about a week and a half. After our experience, I called the company to return the product. I was told there was no refund.
I spoke to a representative about our experience. He assumed that I was calling about the strong odors and burning eyes, and started explaining precautions we could take before I could even let him know that I was calling to complain about scalp issues and not the odor at all. Our distributor, Paramount issued a refund for us.
I received this treatment this past spring and scalp issues still remain for me. I feel that my scalp had never recovered from the trauma that Brazilian Blowout has caused. I am so very grateful that we did a test run on myself before ever using this on one of our clients.
We were refunded for the product by our distributor. The eye discomfort and heaviness in the lungs lasted about two days after the application process. The intense pain and peeling of my scalp lasted about a week. Since the application of Brazilian Blowout in the spring of 2010, I still have terrible scalp issues. My scalp flakes more than ever before, and I still get scabs almost weekly on my scalp. I have to use a scalp sensitive shampoo to try to prevent further discomfort. I am so grateful that this didn't happen to one of our clients. It would have resulted in more trouble than this product is worth.
