Nutrisystem

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I joined Nutrisystem on May 6, 2012 during my membership call. I explained to the lady that I wanted to pay with my debit card. She told me Nutrisystem doesn't take debit cards and that there was another option in which I can pay and that option was to apply for a loan at Bill Me Later. As she signed me up, she did not tell me that Bill Me Later charged a 19.99 percent rate and didn't take a debit card as payment either. Right before signing up, I had my bank account hacked into; and on Bill Me Later, they wanted me to give them my routing number and checking account number. I said no way.

So I called Bill Me Later and spoke to a telephone salesperson and explained the whole situation, and the salesperson told me to call Nutrisystem and have them recall the payment and then pay Nutrisystem. So now back to Nutrisystem, this time, a totally new pleasant lady canceled my Nutrisystem account, believing that what I was told by Bill Me Later could be a solution to the problem and that the payment would be recalled. I was advised to go to Costco to purchase the gift cards and that once I have the gift cards, to call Nutrisystem back and pay for my order. Off to Costco, I went 30 miles away. It closed at 6 PM. I arrived at 6 PM, and I wiggled by the people waiting in line and to the front desk to ask about Nutrisystem gift cards. They told me they didn't have any but at this other Costco's, they have 18.

The next day, I was off to Costco (45 miles away) to get my Nutrisystem gift cards. Now, I was happy that I could get this taken care of without giving out my checking account number or router number. The next day, I was very happy and I called Nutrisystem as advised. I was told that the payment had to be made to Bill Me Later. I got very upset and demanded to speak to a supervisor. Twenty minutes later, a supervisor came on the phone and told me that there wasn't much he could do for me at 11 PM at night. He said he has never heard of anything like this happening before and that once Bill Me Later is charged, the order must be paid through Bill Me Later. What he said he would do was call Bill Me Later and talk to all the managers and he would call me back at 9 PM the following day, which is today, May 15.

May 15 came. I came home from work, and the message light is beeping. I listened to the message, and the supervisor from Nutrisystem left a message at 2 PM. He said things might get busy and that he wanted to call me while he could, understandably. Then he told me that I would have to take the Nutrisystem cards back to Costco because they couldn't take the Bill Me Later payment back. (The money I spent on the Nutrisystem cards was all the money I had. So if I didn't take the cards back, then I'd have no money to pay this outrageous bill.) He also explained that the lady who told me to do that told me this for the next time I order from Nutrisystem and wasn't intended as a way to pay now. He said that I was also misinformed and that Bill Me Later does take a check card. (But I told him I only have a debit card, so I was thinking maybe they were one and the same.)

Now I called Bill Me Later again, and they told me they don't take a debit card and that I'd have to give out my routing number and account number in order to make a payment. By this time, my voice got 5 octaves higher and I had had enough! I told her that that was not going to happen and that I needed to pay this bill another way and it wasn't going to be by the way they wanted it. So then, she said, "Then here is our address to send us a check." No one should ever have to go through this abuse! I felt like a rubber ball being bounced all over the place, and the time in waiting for each of these companies to answer the phone was at least 30 minutes each time. This is maddening!

I cancelled any future orders due to medical reason and they charged me $87.49 for the first shipment's shipping charges and 20% for food. It was never disclosed that they would charge you these fees if you cancel. They advertise all over the TV, paper, radio to take advantage of the 40% off and they catch you with these bogus charges if you cancel and I was not told this when I first ordered.

After almost 3 weeks on Nutrisytem, my husband rushed me to the local ER. I was experiencing acute abdominal pains. After giving a complete history, numerous vials of blood, and undergoing an ultrasound, CT scan and MRI, and spending 3 days in the hospital, the final diagnosis was acute pancreatitis due to the Nutrisystem. My pancreatic enzymes were 500 times the normal limit; my liver enzymes were also elevated. My gall bladder was filled with sludge. It took me several months to decide on a diet, and I wanted something that was sustainable - not a fad. As a scientist, I reviewed prior to purchasing, but I was not prepared for the surprise that I got. I did not think I was putting 3 of my major organs in jeopardy. I came home from the hospital today, and the first thing I did was to throw out all the Nutrisystem. Please, heed the experience - if a scientist can be scammed, so can you. Just like me, you, too, may have an unexpected trip to the ER if you choose Nutyrisystem. It would have been the responsible thing for Nutrisystem to list adverse effects or offer some cautions.

Last month, when I ordered for me and my husband, my order arrived on time. My husband's did not. I had to talk with a supervisor to get it right. This month, when I ordered for me and my husband, my order arrived on time. My husband's did not again! I had to talk with a supervisor to get it set up right again! We are doing this together. How can that work when we can't seem to get it sent out correctly?

Yes, I am angry; and at this point, I have nothing good to say about the company and their employees. This had better not happen again. Do you all have or hire intelligent employees or just anyone? Do they not know how to do their jobs correctly? Maybe, they need more training. I specifically asked the girl this past time to double check my order and my husband's to make sure they went out at the same time, and she said she did. She lied. That's all there is to it. Or else, we would have gotten them both at the same time.

His order has been sent out but won't be here until the usual time it takes to get here. What good is ordering from Nutrisystem if you can't get our food on time and both of our orders delivered on time?

I am extremely happy with Nutrisystem. After researching and reading through their offers and menu items, I contacted a live representative via internet. They were extremely helpful with answering all my questions. I then spoke with a live person to finish my order. Everything arrived on time. The food is fabulous. I am an extremely busy business person working most 7 days a week and have become so burnt out on having to buy and prepare food for the week, usually eating the same things over and over again. I simply don't have the time nor want to take the time. With Nutrisystem, I am able to grab my food items and literally run.

There are a few items that you need to add water and microwave, but it only takes a matter of a couple minutes. You do add "snack meals" on your own, which is protein and complex carb choices which is good. They also want you to add vegetables to your meals. This helps people to incorporate real food and learn how to portion out their meals once they go into the world of eating all their own food choices again. I highly recommend the program for people who are having a hard time with finding the right path on eating right. It is a good start to learning how to do things the right way. Lastly, once you have joined, you have everything at your finger tips to journaling, tracking your weight, measurements, workouts, blogging with other members, connecting with others and a live counselor whenever needed.

I decided to give Nutrisystem a try with the 40% discount. But when I received the food, it did not look or taste good. I decided to keep it anyway but when I tried to cancel, I wouldn't get any replies and when I finally did, they claimed they have to charge $97 for cancellation. This was not disclosed when I signed up or else I wouldn't have. What a ripoff!

Reading the guarantee of cancellation for any reasons, my wife and I saw that I have to call their phone number described online on the Nutrisystem program. One day after the delivery of the first shipment, we realized that it was a health hazard for us and we cancelled the program on 3/20/2012 by email. I received back an email that while we subscribed online, they are not willing to accept cancellations online and I would have to call their phone number.

I wrote immediately back that I am hard of hearing and I am unable to discuss financial matters on the phone and I have requested Nutrisystem to provide a contact point/person for written communications. I am a 75% disabled Vietnam veteran; I lost most of my hearing in the war. I sent several emails, but they never answered back about the subject. I followed up by sending a certified letter restating that we are cancelling the program. Nutrisystem received my certified letter on April 5, 2012. Again, I received no answer from them. I have done what I can to communicate with Nutrisystem. They just ignored my letters and they continue to try to send the meals like nothing happened. I am 75 years old and I have never seen a company behaving like that.

Frankly, I love the program. You follow the program - you will lose weight. My complaint here is that I bit into a meatball "sandwich" only to find a substantially sized rock! Not hardened chicken or something - literally a rock. I suppose these things happen but still is quite a shock on your teeth. I called Nutrisystem and they offered to replace with some additional meals but did not seem too concerned. "I" had to ask them if they wanted me to send it in for analysis. What toxins if any might I have been exposed to? They said I can throw it (!) or or send it in - whatever I like.

I spoke with a representative and explained that I wish to have the auto delivery cancelled before even placing a one month only order. They assured me that this will not occur and that my one month order will be in satisfactory order with me. I thought all was great until I see the auto order bill my card.

A week after cancelling the program, my credit card was charged a very high fee. After being on hold for nearly an hour, I was told they charged me shipping and took away my discount for cancelling. I was not informed about this when I cancelled. They were very rude and said they would not reimburse me for the charge. I will never recommend this diet or ever try it again!

I was trying to terminate the food delivery. I didn't care for the food. But that isn't the complaint. I wasn't expecting great food. After all it's a diet. However, after my second delivery, I attempted to end the auto delivery and am still having difficulty. You can not do it online. At least, it's so difficult that I have not found the manner or link to do it on their webpage. I have been on hold with customer service for over 10 minutes waiting for a customer service representative listening to commercials. Can this get any more frustrating? I don't even care how bad the food was. I just want to cut my losses and get out. Is it legal to make it that difficult?

My fiance's mother started Nutrisystem a short while ago and we had to take her to the hospital last night because she had been complaining of a burning sensation in her stomach, along with nausea and tightening of the abdomen/stomach. In the emergency room, we read some reviews on this program and after taking the time to read what everyone else is going through, I am horrified for the battle we have ahead of us. I will personally make sure that none of my friends or family ever use this program or eat this poison they call food ever again!

I don't really know what to think of Nutrisystem. I read the fine print and knew that I would be charged to cancel my order. I think that paying $104 is ridiculous, but I'd rather pay that than receive another order of food. From the beginning, the food upset my stomach. I read that this was normal and that people called it the "nutri-toots" AKA: It is your body getting used to these new high fiber foods. According to my doctor, this is incorrect. This was my body's way of letting me know that I was allergic to something in the extremely long list of artificial ingredients and chemicals that laden the Nutrisystem food. What the hell does "artificially lightened" mean on the chicken salad? Seriously?

Only after a trip to the ER, being taken off solid foods completely and examination of some of the NS food labels did the doctors realize this. In the midst of the health issues I was experiencing, one NS representative offered to help me change all my NS food to soft food to compliment "my new diet". Evidently, being medically ordered off "hard food" due to an ingredient intolerance is now a customer's choice. To charge me to stop receiving food that landed me in the emergency room is just crappy. But I would expect nothing less from this company.

I found some of the items in my order inedible. I tried to have them replaced and called customer service but they refused because it has been 38 days since I received my order. Apparently you have to complain within 30 days. After reading some of the other comments on this website, I feel lucky. Nevertheless, I certainly won't be using Nutrisystem again and will warn my friends as well. One would think a company would do a little more to ensure customer satisfaction.

NutriSystems did not honor 14-day risk-free trial. I ordered the 28-day meal plan and received the boxes to my home at 7 pm on March 1, 2012. On March 15, 2012, I called to say I wanted to cancel the auto shipment and any other shipments. They said it was past the 14-day trial even though I did not receive the product until the evening of March 1st, the 1st actually counted as the companies first day so they could not refund my money. That is okay but they then proceeded to charge me nearly $100 to cancel saying I had received discounts in shipping of my first order. So it was not risk free. In fact, it cost me another $100 to cancel!

Customer service reps were horrible. I asked not to have the card I first used billed again, what did those lousy people do? Bill that same card again. What made it so bad, the card wasn't mine. They lied to me twice about when I would receive my delivery. I am very upset with these people. The food is lousy. I'd rather stay fat than eat that stuff.

Hotdogs, why were they removed from the menu?

Without making this too long, I cancelled my account on February 14, 2012 because twice my orders went to a different address and I have not received any orders from your company due to your incompetency. I have been calling for weeks and talking to some very rude people and asking that my money, which is $239, be deposited back into my account. They all have called FedEx who confirmed that the orders did go to the incorrect address and they have all assured me that my money would be put back into my account. However, the money has not been deposited yet. I am very disappointed and angry in your company and their way of doing business. I am a nurse and if I did my job like you do, I would be fired. I want my money deposited into my account. Your people have lied to me. Thank you and please make sure that they cancelled my account and don't take anymore money from me. You have my money and I have nothing.

I chose Nutrisystem because it advertised the convenience of online ordering, tracking and delivery. However, I didn't know that meant no customer service. I contacted the company via email 8 times with only one response. The one response I got was email me personally with questions. Then no response after that. I even went so far as to send my requests to all 4 email addresses I could find, social space, consumer complaint board, and the Better Business Bureau. These were questions with my order and yet they did not respond and they expect you to have an auto renewal. They claim to be an online program yet will not contact you back. I refuse to sit on the phone for an hour waiting for someone to pick up (yes my first call in I was on hold for a ridiculous amount of time) because they falsely advertise and improperly charge. And they do not respond to their errors or consumers questions.

Beware: you will be stuck with mounds of the wrong food, get incorrectly charged and they do not care. I know mistakes happen, yet they refuse to hire any customer service to address it. This is why I think it is more of a misguided false advertising tactic. I have not moved this to small claims court.

The operator ran the credit card 3 times and charged double. When I called, they would not give a straight answer and want me to wait 7 days before doing anything. Getting a supervisor is almost impossible and then you get a story about people working part time and not there. I would never deal with them again. I wasted 2 hours trying to get this sorted out but still no resolution. The people really need to be taught customer service.

This is not a complaint at all. I love Nutrisystem. Granted it is processed foods, but it has helped me lose weight. I am not starving and that is because I fill up on veggies which is unlimited on this program and suggested to do so. Some of the of the complaints that I read are that food is just processed. I know that we all have eaten at fast restaurant before and that is exactly what got us to need a weight loss program.

I took the first month to figure out which meals I like and didn't like and I am completely satisfied with the program. As far as the return policy, it is all written on their website. People need to check these out before purchasing. I just wanted to add something good to the reviews. This is a great company with a great support system!

I wondered if anyone has had a complaint about eating the Nutrisystem items. I started eating them and my face broke out very bad. It seemed strange that it would do that but I let my mom try some and believe it or not, her face also broke out. We are now both on antibiotics.

I signed up for Nutrisystem after hearing about some others' success on the program. Within the first month, I lost only about 4 lbs. which I was totally fine with. After that, my girlfriend decided she would sign up as well so we could do it together. Well, we stayed on it for about 4 months without going off plan and we also worked out on a daily basis. We only lost a small amount of weight but that's not my problem.

After 4 months of this program, it just so happened to be time for our yearly physical. Now before Nutrisystem, I had been in the hospital for chest pains, which turned out to be just a panic attack. But they did a lot of blood work just in case and everything was perfectly normal. All my levels of vitamins and everything else was exactly where it should be.

So, like I said now after being on Nutrisystem, it was my yearly physical time, as well as my girlfriend. We got our blood work done and found out that we both have a vitamin D deficiency, but we both have high blood pressure and she is also extremely low in iron! My blood levels were completely normal before this program and so were hers. And now we are low in vitamins with high blood pressure. This program may help people lose weight but it also helps people become unhealthy. So, you give to get. It's not a healthy program and I would never suggest it to anyone.

I was very interested in joining Nutrisystem. I called and spoke with a representative named Larry. He gave me the information about joining, and due to the cost, I told him that I would like to discuss it with my husband before I made my final commitment. He said no problem and if he may call me tomorrow and follow up. I said yes and gave him my number I could be reached at.

Larry never got back with me! I was so excited about joining, but when he did not return my call, I made my final decision right then. I was not impressed with the customer support! He obviously did not make a good impression for me!

I ordered Nutrisystem end of November 2011. I decided I wanted to either start after the holidays or cancel the order. After talking with a gentleman at Nutrisystem, they allow a one-time delay of auto delivery so I chose to take this opportunity. The gentleman said try the product and if you don't like it, cancel and you can send the rest of the food back. I tried Nutrisystem for 2 weeks and don't like the food. It contains too much sugar and it really is all processed food. I called on Jan. 20th to cancel my order and the lady I spoke with said they will charge me $50 for the difference in auto-delivery price and that I could send back the rest of the food.

I wanted to review their cancellation policy. After reviewing, I called Nutrisystem back on Jan 24, canceled my order and then was told I could not send back my food. I tried to speak to my previous representatives but was not allowed to. The customer services representatives were inconsistent in their messages. If I wouldn't have been able to send back the food, I would have canceled previously. I feel cheated and very dissatisfied with this company.

After receiving my initial order, I was displeased. The frozen entrees were fine but the old Nutrisystem entrees are awful. I called to cancel and was switched to the Cancellation Department. I was on the phone for almost ten minutes and repeatedly told the very rude representative that I was unhappy with the food. He was told to cancel my next order ten different times but would not accept my cancellation.

Finally, he told me I would have to pay $69.00 because it was an automatic order, which I told him I would not do. Not only did he not cancel the order but Nutrisystem tried repeatedly to charge my credit card and called me to the point of harassment. When I finally took one of those calls, I again told the woman, with whom I spoke, that I had cancelled the service and my credit card company was under instructions not to honor any charges. Subsequent emails have stated that they would give me a reduced rate on my next order, and at the same time, they just keep trying to charge. I just received another email stating that my next order is to be shipped on 01/25, but that my credit card has been declined.

I ordered Nutrisystem, but after my order, I saw that it was wrong, so I called in to change my order. The customer service representative said he canceled my order. Yet, the order went through, and my debit card was charged $259.99 and the order was shipped. Also, then after having to cancel the order a second time, another $87.49 charge went through my debit card. I again tried to clear this up with Nutrisystem. Their policy clearly states on their website "at Nutrisystem, we expect you to be fully satisfied, or we'll give you your money back, period". They have refused to refund my money (I sent back their shipment as "refused, return to sender"), and I now had to go into my bank and file a fraud charge on my debits. My letter to Nutrisystem, which they have ignored, says:

I cannot describe my disappointment, frustration and absolute dismay at your company. I am a hardworking, single mother. I do not have internet, at my home as I can't afford it, so I can only access internet at work. Your company's actions have placed me into a financial crisis, based upon your unethical and illegal removal of funds from my bank account, and failure to cancel my order, the first time that I requested it be canceled.

On 1/13/2012, at 12:55 PM, I placed my online order for the Women's Success Plan. My total, paid via my debit master card was $259.99. However, when I reviewed my account, I noticed that all the breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack choices I thought I had chosen (which I spend over 20 minutes making those choices), somehow was not ordered. The favorites package was ordered. At around 1:17 PM (11 minutes and 38 seconds after placing my order), I called ** and spoke to Joseph, a Nutrisystem representative. I explained my situation to him, and asked if there was a way to make the changes, so that I could get the food I wanted, and what I had spent all that time online choosing.

Joseph was extremely rude to me, and told me it was too late. I was very appalled by his demeanor, and absolute lack of professionalism. I said that I didn't want food that I didn't order. Joseph again said he couldn't help me. I was at work and had to answer office phones, so I told Joseph I wanted to cancel my order. Joseph confirmed with me that he canceled my order, and since my order hadn't shipped yet, the $259.99 had merely been placed on hold, so it would take a couple of days for the $259.99 to be released back to my account. I asked Joseph if he could send me an email, or letter, confirming this information, and he told me they don't do that. He can't send me anything. It is cancelled.

On 1/17/2012, Tuesday, when I got to work (Monday, 1/16/2012 was a Holiday and my office was closed), I saw that an email had been sent on 1/16/12, 8:15 AM, that my order had been shipped! I called again and spoke to another representative (I cant recall her name). I was extremely frustrated and upset, because I also saw that $259.99 had been deducted from my checking account for this order. This representative was very professional and kind. However, the damage had been done for me, and I was very upset. She cancelled my order and emailed me a cancellation confirmation. She told me when the FedEx and UPS orders come in, to refuse them, and they would be shipped back.

She told me it would be approximately 2 weeks to process the cancellation, and refund my $259.99 into my checking account, and was very apologetic that I had such poor customer service on 1/13/12, and that the other representative did not do what he was supposed to do by cancelling my order. Although having to wait 2 weeks for my refund of $259.99 was going to be financially difficult for me, as I now have to go grocery shopping for food (I wont have Nutrisystem food to eat), I tightened my belt to try and make ends meet.

On 1/18/12 at my lunch from work, I went shopping for groceries, and my debit card was declined for $92. When I got back to work, I pulled up my bank account information, and saw that Nutrisystem had an additional unauthorized debit being taken from my account, in the amount of $87.49! I have no idea what I am being charged for, and have never authorized any other charges (except the initial $259.99, which will be refunded to me once my order is returned)! I am beyond furious, and appalled at your company.

I now am going to have to leave work early, unpaid, to go to my bank, and see what I can do to stop this from being removed from my account. I cant believe the problems I am having with Nutrisystem. I am beyond disappointed. This has caused me so much distress and financial problems. $259.99 and $87.49 may not seem like a lot of money to some people, but to me it is the difference of putting food on my table each evening, and whether or not my electric bill is paid. I would like a supervisor's response to me, and have this matter handled immediately.

Nope, this isn't a complaint. I just wanted to let people know that this system does work! I've been on NS for over 4 months and have lost 74 pounds. I'm half way to goal.

This program has taught me to eat sensibly and to portion control. I eat 6-7 small meals daily and I'm never hungry. If you go onto the website, they post a list called "Recommended Grocery Foods". This is where the obvious is listed - dairy, veggies and fruits - even fats and extras. This should be a huge indication that you need to add these foods into the program. Duh!

Most of the meat-laden foods, I don't like. But that's my taste buds. I've chosen to flex my meals. That means that I cook my own food. I just use NS's guidelines of how much to eat and what to eat. The NS pre-packaged foods are for people who want/need the convenience, that's all. There is no magic potion in the foods to help you lose weight. I needed that crutch in the beginning of my program. Now, I understand things much clearer and no longer need that assistance, although, I do keep the grab and go stuff handy. You just never know when you need it.

Your first month on NS will be a trial and error time. You will find the foods you love and re-order those. Make sure you are able to customize your order. This will allow you to order the foods you love. But even if you find something you absolutely dislike, there are tips and tricks on how to add veggies, fat free sour cream, etc. into those foods to make them more palatable. Most of the people who are complaining about the food haven't picked up the phone and spoke with a counselor or even gone onto the website and ask questions. If they would have, they would have realized the many variables to this program.

If it wasn't for NS, I probably would be dead from a heart attack. I was well over 300 pounds when I started the program. I'm now off of all blood pressure medicines. Follow this program 100% and you will succeed. And no, I don't work for NS. I'm a very happy client and will be for a lifetime.

The food isn't too bad. However, when you're starving, you'll eat just about anything. It was helpful when I could pick my meals because then I could choose the lesser of the evils. Also, I've had my meals less than 1 year and all of the dinners have gone bad. I wouldn't recommend it or go back on it.

As a birthday present, I asked for gift cards from my sister and husband to Nutrisystem. What a disappointment. Nothing but processed foods, and after just one of their snacks, I broke out some rashes and hives. I called them up, and because I did not want to hassle with shipping the order back, I was charged an additional $50.28 after losing my investment of $238.00.

I called Nutrisystem and was told that unless I shipped everything back, I would incur an additional cost. I could not see myself shipping back nearly 2 pounds of food. Seems like I did not have much of a choice. My reason for not consuming the food was strictly due to an allergic reaction. I should have been fully reimbursed.
