Feds Probe Evenflo Infant Seats |
|||
|
Federal safety regulators are investigating the Evenflo Discovery infant car seat after two babies died when their seats allegedly came apart during accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it has received seven reports of the seat detaching from its base during a crash, including two in which the infants died and three in which they were injured. The problem is hardly a new one. In February 2000, Joeylynn of Jackson, NJ, told ConsumerAffairs.com about an accident in which her son's car seat came apart: "My husband was traveling east on North Countyline Road with my 1-year-old son when he rear-ended another vehicle. His approximate speed was 20 - 25 mph." "Upon impact my son's car seat broke. The left arm that you pull down to lock into place snapped in two," she said. Her son's injuries were not life-threatening. Evenflo said it will cooperate with the NHTSA probe. A company spokesman said the company has sold more than 2.5 million Discovery seats and has had no major safety issues with it. The accidents in which the infants died were "horrific" and involved catastrophic damage to the vehicles involved, the company noted. |
