DA Probes Watsonville Band Manager's Travel Agency

December 13, 2004
California authorities raided the offices of Ed Pio Travel Global Exchange, a travel agency owned by Monterey Band leader Ed Pio and his business partner, Kay Burtness. The Monterey County District Attorney and California Attorney General said they executed a search warrant on seven felony charges of consumer fraud.

Monterey County District Attorney Steve Holett said his office had more than 200 complaints from consumers who had bought trips to China and cruises to Mexico from the company, the Monterey Register-Pajaronian reported.

The agency promotes itself as a full-service tour and travel company, and books both domestic and international travel packages.

The Watsonville Band is a renowned music group with more than 70 members that has performed for Pope John Paul II and former President Bill Clinton at the White House, among others.

Pio, a trumpet player, joined the band in 1948 when he was a junior at Watsonville High School. He has managed the band since 1964. He and bandmate Burtness co-founded the travel agency after struggling to book the Watsonville Band a reasonably priced tour in China, the newspaper reported.
